Happy Mother's Day, Sisters! We hope it will be a joyful one for you and your families. As we know well, our relationships with our moms can run the emotional gamut over the lifespan. We also know that some moms are made for mothering (or work really hard at it!), while some simply fall short because of circumstances they can't (or don't know how to) control.  In Liz Scheier's beautiful, honest memoir, Never Simple, she describes her difficult and complex relationship with her mother, Judith. As a result of Judith's borderline personality disorder (BPD), Liz's childhood was fraught with chaos and volatility. When Liz was 18 years old, her mother dropped two bombshells. One, that her mom had been married for most of the previous two decades to a man Liz had never heard of. And second, that everything she had told Liz about the man she'd claimed was Liz's dead father was entirely fictional. Never Simple is Liz's story about what happened next. We loved our illuminating and intimate conversation with Liz -- and you will, too. Never Simple has garnered praise from the New York Times, Publishers Weekly (starred review), Kirkus, Library Journal, Bookpage, Booklist, and bestselling authors Augusten Burroughs, Jenny Lawson, Isaac Mizrahi, Elissa Altman, Greer Hendricks, and Mira Bartók. It was chosen as a Best Book of March by Amazon and Apple Books, a People Picks by People Magazine, an Indie Next pick, a Barnes & Noble Top 10 Favorite Ebook of 2022, and was featured as one of “15 March Reads to Get You Through the Month” on Good Morning America. It was a finalist for a Lambda Award.

Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are here to chat about The Golden Couple! This novel kept us on the edge of our seats - we encounter some master manipulators! We've all encountered them in real life, haven't we? People who seem charming and charismatic, but who have their own agenda.  People who deceive.  We shine some light on that dysfunctional behavior! But we also cover the type of courage it takes to change the way we respond to these people . . . . perhaps even to establish better boundaries. To live our lives from a different angle. We also explore the interesting angle of what happens when we cast off the restraints of a professional counseling license and really  deal with people head on?  We go deep on this one - stability, narcissism, building a trusting relationship. And more!

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Narrators Marin Ireland and Karissa Vacker dazzle as they deliver this twisted domestic thriller from literary duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb talk about the fantastic narrations that make the thriller even better on audio. Ireland expertly embodies Avery, a razor-sharp therapist who has lost her license for her unconventional methods. Vacker's layered, emotionally driven portrayal of Marissa, the mysterious other half of the “Golden Couple,” keeps listeners on the edge of their seats. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Macmillan Audio. Find more audiobook recommendations at audiofilemagazine.com Today's episode is sponsored by Naxos AudioBooks. Leighton Pugh narrates Poetics/Rhetoric by Aristotle. The Art of Rhetoric, a guide on the principles behind oratorical skill, is a core text on the art of persuasion. Aristotle contends that rhetoric is one of the key elements of philosophy – along with logic and dialectic. The Poetics, the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory, has exerted a huge influence on Western drama and literature. It demonstrates how plot, character and spectacle can be combined to produce maximum impact in drama – and tragedy in particular. "Propulsive and thrilling....A page-turner that will keep you guessing until the very end." --Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Malibu Rising Wealthy Washington suburbanites Marissa and Matthew Bishop seem to have it all―until Marissa is unfaithful. Beneath their veneer of perfection is a relationship riven by work and a lack of intimacy. She wants to repair things for the sake of their eight-year-old son and because she loves her husband. Enter Avery Chambers. Avery is a therapist who lost her professional license. Still, it doesn't stop her from counseling those in crisis, though they have to adhere to her unorthodox methods. And the Bishops are desperate. When they glide through Avery's door and Marissa reveals her infidelity, all three are set on a collision course. We are thrilled to chat with Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, the New York Times bestselling co-authors of The Wife Between Us, An Anonymous Girl, and You Are Not Alone. Their new novel, The Golden Couple, is out now! ** After a discussion about what it's like to create and promote during a pandemic and the overview of this new novel, we discuss Avery, the complicated “maverick” therapist who is one of the dual protagonists in their novel. They share how they wanted the reader to feel her heart and her soul. (04:32) ** Marissa, the other half of the dual perspectives and one half of the “golden couple”, has a secret and ends up needing Avery in a way she didn't expect. We loved hearing about how she represents the shiny image of what so many of us see on social media vs what is really going on underneath. (07:15) ** We love a “second act”. Sarah and Greer tell us about the pivots in their careers, why they  trusted those signs that it was time for something new, and how they found the courage to take the leap. It sounds to us that the universe and some intuition made this magical duo happen!  (10:12). ** As co-authors, Sarah and Greer tackled a whole new genre than what they were used to as a writer and an editor in women's fiction. They didn't follow any rules and weren't afraid to paint outside the numbers to create a novel with strong female protagonists and suspense elements. (14:43) ** Sarah and Greer discuss the conversations between all their novels and how their favorite themes come out in the Golden Couple: complicated relationships and psychology. They explain their writing process and how two authors can write hand in hand.  (17:32) ** We talk astrology and share how their partnership is written in the stars. (22:16) ** We get the scoop on the book-to-screen adaptations and what's next writing-wise for them together and individually! (28:54) ** Sarah and Greer share what they're loving right now, which involves a lot of yellow and golden things. (30:14) Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @popfictionwomen and on Twitter @pop_women. To do a full deep dive, check out our website at http://www.popfictionwomen.com (www.popfictionwomen.com). Book#1: Verity by Colleen Hoover. It was Amazon's top 100 bestseller. It is about a character Lowen Ashleigh a struggling writer who is hired by a husband of a best selling author Verity Crawford to complete a book series the wife could not complete as she is now injured. Book#2: The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen. This is a crazy thriller. Perhaps even crazier than Verity?? It is about a jealous ex-wife who is obsessed with her replacement, a beautiful young girl who is about to marry her ex husband. Or is this book about the young beautiful girlfriend who is obsessed about the ex wife trying to harm her? Book#3: The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali. This is a very sad, touching, heartfelt novel about lost love. The setting is Tehran in the 50s, it is about Roya and Bahman, their romance and heartbreak during Iran's political unrest and how their lives changed forever.
