Hang out with the English Club as we discuss Ernest Kline's Ready Player One! We both read our own half, and together, we try to put the pieces together. ABOUT THE BOOK: IN THE YEAR 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9969571-ready-player-one # ABOUT US: English Club Podcast is a joint venture between two critique partners at "Saint Balasar University". Stock up on those rations and race to that bomb shelter, because it's Global Thermonuclear War! Or is it? Jay and Shua look back on 40 years of the classic movie WarGames with Matthew Broderick. WarGames not only kept us on the edge of our seat wondering if WW3 was about to start, but it also helped to shape policies and events in our nation's government. But this one has a twist. They begin to realize it. Audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton. Jay finally returned to Pandora and watched the visually rich Avatar: The Way of Water. He agreed that it was a sight to behold. Enjoy Movies! 1983 was a scary time in our country. We seemed to constantly be on pins and needles wondering if the Soviets were going to start an all-out nuclear war. But it was an exciting time too. The personal computer was making its way into our homes and giving us access to the outside world. That is a brilliant recipe for a dramatic movie. Wargames became that movie, where a young computer hacker named David Lightman, played by a very young Matthew Broderick, who only had two acting credits to his name before this movie, unknowingly breaks into the military's computer system and nearly starts World War 3. It was very well executed and made us question the possibilities of the future. It even made President Reagan a little nervous. After watching it, he requested an investigation to research the dangers of hacking and how we could take precautions against it. And of course, it give Wade Watts an interesting challenge to accomplish in the Ready Player One novel by Earnest Cline. Have you experienced WarGames? Did you like experimenting with computers? Hey are you ready for a fun trip into 80s nostalgia! Well you've come to the right place... in like 121 pages or so. Yeah we'll throw you a bone here and there. You remember Marty McFly's alarm clock?!? Yeah... I hope that reference will sustain you. Because we're not going to spend a whole lot of time in the Oasis doing Ready Player One stuff. Sure we'll go steal the script to Princess Bride but all that action and plot progression and "stuff that's actually happening" is going to have to come in part 2 of the book.I'm not joking. If you've read this book (and you obviously have because everyone reads along with us) you know that the pacing of this book is awful, the author really didn't care about this book, and he phones in the majority of it. That's so apparent here in part 1 where we're going to lay the ground work. The same way Ernest does: telling it to you directly. Then we're going to lay some groundwork, put some work on the ground, build up to some future stuff, establish the ground that we will be standing on, pouring the foundation for the book... do you get the point yet? This book sucks but Nate had to read it so you have to listen to this episode. This book, set in a dystopian future, focuses on Wade Watts and his hunt for the Easter egg that was left by James Halliday upon his death. Finding the Easter egg would make Wade the inheritor of Halliday's fortune and the OASIS itself, a virtual reality that basically everyone on the planet uses to escape from their reality of poverty, energy crisis, and global warming. Wade spends all his time combing through films, music, TV, and videogames from the 80s, and repeatedly reads Anorack's Almanac, written by Halliday himself. All in the hopes of decoding the clue to the Copper Key, the first of three that must be found to find the egg. Wade finds himself in a race against other players and Innovative Online Industries (IOI), a corporation that wants to control to OASIS and is willing to play real dirty to win.Is our world heading toward a fully virtual culture? Would you want the opportunity to participate in a thing like the OASIS? Will Wade ever push the big red button? How do you make a movie steeped in 80's nostalgia without having it be a major Spielberg-fest? You get Spielberg to direct it! Directed by Steven Spielberg. Written by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline (Based on his book). Starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg. How is the world wrong about this movie? From Bryan Connolly: This was and is so hated by so many people. Yes, the constant shoehorning of pop culture and bombardment of frenetic CGI is a brain overload, but this is Spielberg having a lot of fun…and it's been a while since he's relaxed and just had a good time. He's allowed it! The most expensive film collage movie ever made. Did we mention it has Chucky in it!!! This week Danielle takes Sam through the truly bizarre finale of the 2020 Ernest Cline novel Ready Player Two. Wade Watts is trapped in the OASIS in his ONI VR headset by Anorak and his "infirmware" and is being forced by Anorak to find the seven shards hidden by Halliday on various media worlds Kira—the late wife of Ogden and romantic obsession of Halliday—had a hand in creating. And if that sentence doesn't sum up Ready Player Two, nothing does. The purpose of this latest scavenger hunt is still unclear, but Wade now has 12 hours to complete it before he dies, so naturally he completely ignores the help offered by his biggest fan L0hengrin. Wade and his friends set off to various media worlds, including the not-much-of-a-challenge school world, and the fever dream of the Prince world. Eventually, Wade figures out that Anorak wants the shards because he—the A.I. consciousness of Halliday—wants to use the shards to resurrect an A.I. consciousness of Kira which Halliday created without her consent. Anorak wants to live in eternal bliss with this A.I. Kira even though she never loved Halliday, even when reconstituted virtually. We won't spoil how the space ship full of frozen embryos figures into all this, but it's wild. Anyway, Wade and his friends find a convenient magic sword that Ogden, and only Ogden for some reason, can use to defeat Anorak, and embark on a pretty simple heist to free Ogden and bring him to the Oasis to fight Anorak. All of this is pretty standard, but then Wade discovers there are A.I. scans of every person who has used an ONI device, and his solution to this is probably the most ridiculous, and most irresponsible, part of the whole book, which is really saying something.
This week Danielle starts Sam on a VR adventure with the 2020 Ernest Cline novel Ready Player Two. In this sequel to Ready Player One, Wade Watts is the freshly minted owner of the OASIS, a massive virtual realty universe that dominates the cultural and commercial landscape of a dystopian Earth. That's when Wade's late predecessor, Halliday, sends him a hitherto unknown technology: The ONI, a neural interface VR system for the OASIS that kills you if you use it too long. This all sounds great to Wade who immediately launches it as a commercial product, and this is why Danielle and Sam feel that you probably shouldn't pick the successor to your multi-billion dollar essential planetary infrastructure via pop culture scavenger hunt. At this point, a new scavenger hunt appears in the OASIS, seemingly just for Wade and created by Halliday (seriously, does he have any other ideas?). Wade is tasked with finding seven shards but is stumped by the clue and so kinda just ignores if for a few years, like a true hero. During that time, Wade finds his friends divided over the ethics of the ONI devices, and Wade drifts away from Samantha, his girlfriend for all of a week, due to her reservations. Finally, a fan of Wade's, L0hengrin, clues him into where the first shard is, and helps him recover this first quest item. Things only get weirder from here, and that's without mentioning the Olympic swimming pool's worth of 80's and 90's pop culture references to slog through, or the spaceship full of frozen embryos. Sam has many questions, and while there are few answers in part one, we can only hope part two will shed some light on his most burning question: How big a jerk was Halliday? (Spoiler: absolutely massive).
Konnichiwa all you Otakus out there. I hope you're ready for the final installment of the epic sci-fi hit: Ready Player One! Join Ben and Nate for the dramatic conclusion we were all waiting for, in theory. At last Wade has a plan he executed 3 weeks ago that will come in at a crucial moment to turn the tide of this battle. But will it be enough? Will Wade win the 400 billion dollars, or will he realize that the true prize was the friends we got along the way? Both. It's both. He gets the girl and the money. What do we get? We get to watch our lives crumble away as we're bankrupted by the very rich twenty-something we helped put into power. If there's a metaphor in here, you can bet Ernest Cline drove right past it in his DeLorean! We breakdown the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Ready Player One is a 2011 science fiction novel and the debut novel of American author Ernest Cline. The story, set in a dystopia in 2045, follows protagonist Wade Watts on his search for an Easter egg in a worldwide virtual reality game, the discovery of which would lead him to inherit the game creator's fortune. Cline sold the rights to publish the novel in June 2010, in a bidding war to the Crown Publishing Group (a division of Random House). The book was published on August 16, 2011. An audiobook was released the same day; it was narrated by Wil Wheaton, who was mentioned briefly in one of the chapters. In 2012, the book received an Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association division of the American Library Association and won the 2011 Prometheus Award. A film adaptation, screen written by Cline and Zak Penn and directed by Steven Spielberg, was released on March 29, 2018. A sequel, Ready Player Two, was released on November 24, 2020. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

How do we bring racial healing and fight injustice? By overcoming evil with good! And that's exactly what happened when Johnny Lee Clary, the "Imperial Wizard of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan" met NAACP leader and friend of Martin Luther King Jr., and Wade Watts. Here this powerful story of healing and what we can learn from the example of Rev. Wade Watt's incredible love. Topic: Virtual Reality Tutorial This week, we're looking in to Virtual Reality, the concept of going to other created worlds and living in them, either full time or temporarily. It's also an excuse to put my mom in my HTC Vive next week and have her experience VR as well. Being the total dare-devil she is, I'm curious as to what she'll think about it. What is it? The idea of Virtual Reality has meant a different reality that has been created in some way. The term Virtual itself was a kind of philosophy that meant a reality that was both ideal and real in some way. Today, we use the term Virtual to describe anything that originates from technology, or more specifically, computers. When we speak about Virtual Reality, we tend to talk about entering, or existing, in a digital/computer generated environment or scenario, typically through physical means. Today, we know Virtual Reality as head sets that you are able to view and interact with the virtual world through. Modern Virtual Reality is being used mostly for video games, but other applications such as transportation, medical, and even defense as well. VR In Media Depending on the media, whole civilizations or worlds may exist virtually, while some enter a virtual space for a short term time and leave once their jobs are done. Media often portrayed their Virtual Realities as either the Ideal reality you’d like to have, or as a modern system in which you have some control over. In the Ideal Reality, you are transported to a world where it’s the most ideal for you: somewhere you’d like to have traveled or existed in, or a world that is so different from our own that it ceases to be anything like ours anymore. The other example is often used like a prison, where people are kept and unaware that they are stuck or in there; and if they are aware, then they have little or no control over the world and are existing through it. There are also media that portrays Virtual Reality more as Augmented Reality; this is the idea that through special devices, you can see additional things in your real world setting and interact with them. Typically, all Virtual Reality requires you to need to enter a space where the reality will exist, wear some sort of device to access the digital world, or be connected to it directly to a machine through a port installed on the body. A common example is something like a headset that scans your brain for the actions you want to take, or connecting directly into your spine. Example in Media. Matrix (1999) Probably the most famous Example of Virtual Reality, the Matrix itself takes place in a world where humans are no fuel for robots, and in order to keep humans in line, they are connected to the Matrix. The Matrix itself is modeled on a late 90s, early 2000s, modern day metropolis, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York, where humans are completely unaware that they are in any kind of Virtual Reality. Humans who have been disconnected from the Matrix, fight to find others who they can disconnect and join in the resistance against the Machines. Humans who have been disconnected can return back in to the Matrix, but can be uploaded with various knowledge packs, allowing them to know various fighting styles, how to use guns, and just about anything else. Neo(Keanu Reeves) is one such person disconnected, but later becomes capable of manipulating the Matrix to allow him to have superior strength, see through things in the Matrix, and even Fly. Inception (2010) In Inception, there is a military training device that allows people to share their dreams. The dream world can be manipulated to look or become just about anything within the dreamer’s perception or idea. Once in the dream, people can interact and travel in to other people’s dreams in order to steal or gather information about a person, or in Inspection, plant an idea. The movie shows off the ability to manipulate reality, and how it can be used to great advantage to create anything you want, or a great prison in which to get lost in. Leonardo DiCaprio is one such person who have been trapped in his own dreams before, and knows how to venture in to the dream to get information. Ready Player One In Ready Player One, most people are poor and barely surviving, much of the world’s resources are gone, but people still have the OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation). OASIS is a digital world where players can upload their creations and use them through the world. The movie, along with the book, play off of tropes and items from various media sources, like the Delorean from Back to the Future, a Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam, King Kong from the same series, T-Rex from Jurassic Park, and even sets from the Shinning. The movie has its hero, Wade Watts, participating in a treasure hunt for the future ownership of OASIS after its creator’s death. 90s Cartoons VR Troopers Adapted from various Tokusatsu series: Metal Hero Series: Superhuman Machine Metalder, Dimensional Warrior Spielban and Space Sheriff Shaider. The series tells of three humans who are protecting the real world from enemies in a ‘Virtual Reality’ by transforming in to masked heroes. The series is uses footage from various Metal Hero Series, and none of the series actually line up with any of them. Super Human Samurai Syber Squad Adapted from Tokusatsu series Denkou Choujin Gridman, or Gridman the Hyper Agent, was DIC Production’s attempt to cash in on the Power Ranger’s fad of the 90s. The show’s action took place in a Digital World, where our Hero would transform in to Gridman/Servo and fight evil monsters that were really computer viruses. Star Trek – The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Discovery, & Picard By the time of the Next Generation, the 24th century, Star Fleet developed the Holo-Deck, a room that used shields and light to project a Virtual Reality. The notion was that the shields, a type of Force Field, would be projected in a room, and light would then be passed through/around them, creating various objects and spaces. The force fields could mimic heat and cold, texture and shapes, and the light would always seem to bounce off items perfectly. The rooms were usually the size of a small banquet hall, with the intention that multiple people could exist in the space at the time. Virtual people or creatures in a holo-deck are often known as Holograms, who can have very sophisticated AIs. Holograms typically can’t exist outside of the Holodeck without holo-emitters being placed in the surrounding space. In Discovery, they seem to have either early version of holo-decks being used, but not common in the rest of Star Fleet. By the of Picard, they no longer need to be in rooms, and can instead have holo-emitters placed in an area to generate the holograms. Holo-decks were often used as a means of changing up the scenery or locations in Star Trek. This allowed writers to write in historical characters or settings, or play on various notions or locations that wouldn’t be common in space. Famously, Voyager’s Doctor was a hologram that expanded his abilities/roles over time, showing the sophistication of the AI technology and programming. Many of his stories grappled with if a Hologram could be considered a person, or his limitations as a Hologram. Japanese Animation: Ghost in a Shell (1995) Perhaps one of the First anime to visit Virtual and Augmented reality, as well as a more definitive Cyberpunk setting. It tells of a future where cyberization, the act of becoming a cyborg or gaining machine parts, is common place. It shows how virtual worlds can be created within people and settings, and even how the world has been augmented with Virtual advertisements, signs, and even projections that can confuse the brain. It’s a series the goes on to ask what is real at the end of the day? Later series play with the notion of Virtual Reality and hacking more so. The series follows Major Motoko Kusanagi and Section 9, a task force for the Japanese Government, assigned with difficult missions that require utmost secrecy and security. .hack//Sign (2002) Read as ‘Dot, Hack, Sign’, the series started as an Anime, intending on promoting a Video Game series where you play a fictional MMORPG in, and started a franchise. The story tells that in 2009, a virus known as Pluto’s Kiss destroyed any computer connected to it, wrecking just about every electronic connected to it. Two years later, access to the network recovers, and the first game to come out for it is ‘The World’, an MMORPG with a fantasy Setting. Players log in to the world via head sets and interact with other people in this digital world, however mysterious things are happening, that cause players to go in to Commas after playing the game. One such person, Tsukasa, is trapped in the game via one of these mysterious happenings, and eventually gets out. They are eventually able to get out, only for other people to go in to Commas later on due to events. Sword Art Online (2012) Likely the more popular version of Virtual Reality, the first of its kind Virtual MMO is being released to only 100,000 people lucky enough to buy it. Upon first logging on, player discover that they can’t log out of the game, and are then told by the game’s creator that they are trapped in this Virtual MMO until they can reach the final boss of the game on the 100th floor, and if they die in the game, they die in real life due to the head set over clocking. The initial players are stuck for 2 years in the game, until they eventually get free, and continue going back in to various Virtual Worlds of different settings and genre. This anime shows the more common idea of what Virtual Reality is capable of, as a gateway to fantasy worlds and new games to play. It’s popularity spawned a number of sequels and copy cat anime, manga, and novels, which all seem to play on the theme of people being getting lost in their virtual world. VR HeadSets One of the First VR Headsets was ‘The Sword of Damocles’ which only projected a wire-frame square upon the world. It was the first in the late 60s, and was so heavy, it had to be suspended from the ceiling. While rudimentary, it started the Idea of this kind of technology being the future. By the 90s, various companies were trying to get the full Virtual Reality set up working, with Full body suits and chambers designed to give you the full immersion feeling of being in Virtual Reality. Sega was amongst the first to really create Virtual Reality Gaming, with Arcade Cabinets that featured headsets that tracked your vision and sign. While many companies tried to get it to take off, there was also a fair amount of failure, leading to many companies discontinuing the study in to VR. By the 2000s, Virtual Reality was a fad and not common study, with few companies really looking in to it. It wasn’t until 2010 when early versions of the Oculus Rift being developed that offered 90-degree field of vision that VR started to become more interesting. In 2012, Facebook would go on to buy Oculus VR for around $3 Billion. By 2013, Valve had joined in the development, developing lag-free software to make VR content more possible. A year later, they joined the market with the HTC Vive. By 2016, over 230 companies, from Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Sony, Samsung, Facebook, and more has developed AR or VR groups, developing new technology for the immerging market.
We did it and the wait is over! We're back in action with one of the best books of the decade. Today we pitch, summarize, and analyze READY PLAYER ONE. This fantastic debut novel by Ernest Cline. "It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of 10,000 planets. And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune - and remarkable power - to whoever can unlock them. For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved - that of the late 20th century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle. Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt - among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life - and love - in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape. A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. From headsets to haptic suits, there is going to be a lot of accessories and apparel in XR to chose from, including some that expand senses you didn’t even know were XR-compatible. Antony Vitillo – AKA Skarred Ghost – drops in to discuss different devices with Alan, their use cases, and what companies should consider when they go shopping for some. Alan: Today’s guest is Antony Vitillo, better known as Skarred Ghost. Antony is an XR consultant and author of an amazing blog called The Ghost Howls. He also runs a consulting company called New Technology Walkers, where they develop VR solutions and advise companies about how best to use VR and AR. Antony recently traveled to the fourth annual VIVE Ecosystem Conference — VEC — in Shenzhen, China. If you’re not already following Tony, you can learn a lot by connecting with him on LinkedIn and subscribing to his newsletter at skarredghost.com. Tony welcome to the show. Antony: Hello, Alan! Thanks for this opportunity. Alan: It’s so great to have you on the show. I had a wonderful opportunity to speak with you many times, and we are both very, very passionate about virtual and augmented reality. I want to just thank you for taking the time to be on the show. Antony: I’m very happy to be with you. I’m happy to speak to you live, after so many messages we’ve done on LinkedIn. Super happy to be here. Alan: Let’s just dive right in, and we’re going to try to bring as much value as we can to the listeners today. We have a lot to go through; we’re going to go through all of the different hardware aspects involved in Virtual/Mixed/Augmented Reality — XR — and it’s not just the headsets or headphones. You’ve got things like haptic suits, haptic gloves. You’ve got touch-sensitive stimulators. You’ve got VR headsets, AR headsets. You’ve got mobile phone-based AR, eye tracking set devices, taste experiments, hot and cold devices, thermal devices, and then tracking systems for motion capture, and of course, treadmills for omni-directional walking. So there’s a lot to unpack here. Let’s start at something crazy; haptic suits. Let’s talk about haptic suits, and why and where these would be used in any industries. Antony: I’m very interested to have these suits, because they offer the promise of letting you use your full body in VR. So, finally, you can be there with all your body. You know, my first startup was about full-body in VR, but using Kinect. So, a different approach, but I’m a big fan of having the possibility to kick objects, to move your body in every possible way, and see your full self replicated in VR. The advantage of using the haptic suits over other approaches, like the one that they used with Kinect, is that you don’t only have your full body — your full movement — in VR, but you can also feel sensations. You can have haptic feedback. So you can [feel] hot, cold. You can feel pain and whatever. It’s really full immersion; a bit like we have seen in the Ready Player One movie. Wade Watts wore that expensive suit, to fully be inside the Oasis. This is why I think they’re very interesting, because they can really enhance your visual experience; your sense of presence, like your ancestors like to say. Alan: So, let’s unpack this for a second, Tony. What would some of the practical use cases of this… I can see one in military training, where you’re in a virtual world, you’re in a hostile environment, and maybe something explodes behind you — a piece of shrapnel hits you — and maybe it vibrates. Maybe explain some other instances, where this could be used in enter

Book Vs Movie (Replay) “Ready Player One” The Margos Put on Their Game-Faces in This Hyper 80s Ep The Margos are feeling stoked about this 1980s-centric soaked episode talking about a much-requested book/movie Ready Player One from first time author Ernest Cline. This pop-culture stuffed tale features more gamer references than anything we have remotely covered in the past so we are a bit nervous about how accurate we will be, (Be kind if you are a first-time listener!) Both book and movie have the same basic plot--set in the miserable 2040s, Wade Watts is a teenage orphan who wishes for a life outside the stacked trailer parks. In fact, most people are unhappy with the real world and choose to escape to the virtual world known as OASIS. Created by shy genius James Halliday, the OASIS survives after his recent death but he left several clues (“easter eggs”) for one person to discover and inherit his entire fortune and corporation. Wade (who goes by the moniker Parzival in OASIS) along with his crush Art3mis, best friend Aech and pals Daito and Sho is determined to find every easter egg in the hunt and his vast knowledge of both popular and obscure pop culture trivia sends him on an amazing journey. Cline sold the book and movie within days of each other in 2010 and serves as the co-screenwriter of the Steven Spielberg adaptation. (We seem to cover a ton of Spielberg on this show!) Which version did the Margo like better? Check out the link at the bottom of the page to find out. At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut - part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed. It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig. Are you ready?

Ready Player One is directed by Spielberg, Steven, who has had Asian stereotypes decorate his films all the way since IJ and the T of D (not including the vaguely Asian characteristics of the shark from Jaws). Ready Player One is about a kid named Wade Watts, whose alter ego is Parzival — regardless of which persona he inhabits, he’s a really bad actor. He has one face, and it’s a very ugly face. He earns no sympathy. Unfortunately, he survives in the end — but at least Simon Pegg does, too. This is a movie that thinks it’s really important. It’s about Steven Spielberg celebrating Steven Spielberg. It doesn’t care about the dangers of technology and instead makes technology seem awesome. It’s about worshipping a massive dork named Mark Rylance. It’s about Easter eggs, but there’s no rabbit in sight. There is, however, an Iron Giant, and Beetlejuice, and a lot of other dumb things. You probably shouldn’t watch this movie. If you do, we wish you luck. Also, you should definitely listen to this podcast, cause we hardly talk about the movie, since it’s not interesting. Instead, we talk about interesting things like Stranger Things, and cultural nostalgia, and mythology, and social media, and VR. Our podcast is a lot better than Ready Player One.

Book Vs Movie “Ready Player One” The Margos Put on Their Game-Faces in This Hyper 80s Ep The Margos are feeling stoked about this 1980s-centric soaked episode talking about a much-requested book/movie Ready Player One from first time author Ernest Cline. We are sponsored by Penguin Books in this ep! Marie Lu follows up her New York Times bestseller WARCROSS with WILDCARD which follows the story of Emika Chen who just made it out of the Warcross Championships alive and is now seeking to end Hideo’s plan for good. Emika joins the Phoenix Riders on the streets of Tokyo and there is a bounty on her head. How far will she go to ultimately take down the man she loves? Lu (who is also the author of the mega-hit “Legends” series) draws from her personal experience in the video game industry where she is creating a world that is revolved around a game that takes over the world. This is a thriller that serves as a satisfying ending to this unique tale. It’s available in hardcover, Kindle, and as an audiobook. Affectionately referred to as a "nerdgasm" Ready Player One is the world wide best seller by Ernest Cline and now a movie by Steven Spielberg. It's 1980s pop culture references are a joy. The genius of the story is it will find young fans in the gaming community and older fans with it's plethora of Gen X easter eggs. Set in 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape. This episode of #TheNewNormal is not so much a review of the book and movie but a discussion of whether the global virtual world at the centre of the story is possible and when and how it might play out. A fun chat with two of my poker friends and avid fans, Andrew & Maciek

The Screen Addicts enter into the many worlds created by the visionary director, Steven Spielberg as we list off our favorite works of his as well as review his recent film, 'Ready Player One'
Crédits : Back to the future – OST a-ha – Take On Me Van Halen – Jump Date du tournage: 29/03/2018
To coincide with the release of Ready Player One in theaters, we decided to review and discuss the novel it's based on! Out in 2011, written by Ernest Cline, the novel tells the story of Wade Watts and his friends searching for a valuable Easter egg in the OASIS, a virtual world. Listen to your favorite fake nerds discuss the novel before seeing the movie!
The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, head to the OASIS for this week's review of Ready Player One (2018). Adapted from Ernest Cline's popular novel by none other than Steven Spielberg, the film follows Wade Watts and his avatar, Parzival, on a quest to complete a series of challenges and keep the multi-world digital space out of the hands of IOI, an evil corporation looking to lock down and commodify the OASIS. Starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg and more, the story indulges in a slew of 80s pop culture references and offers a look at what our world could look like in the very near future.
Ready Player One In the year 2045, people can escape their harsh reality in the OASIS, an immersive virtual world where you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone-the only limits are your own imagination. OASIS creator James Halliday left his immense fortune and control of the Oasis to the winner of a contest designed to find a worthy heir. When unlikely hero Wade Watts conquers the first challenge of the reality-bending treasure hunt, he and his friends-known as the High Five-are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS and their world.
Infinity Games Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by KelryxsKing and Jukeboxhero2323.In our thirty second podcast we talk about the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. The book focuses on character Wade Watts in a dystopian future where everyone is obsessed with a virtual world and an Easter egg hunt with a prize of 240 billion dollars. It is jam packed with 80's music, video game, and television references. When the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. Wade Watts finds the first clue and starts a race for the Egg.
(Photo by: Jaap Buttendijk / Copyright: © 2017 WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC.) On this week's episode, CultureCast book editor Loretta Williams focuses on two books lighting up the Internet. "Ready Player One," a book by Ernest Cline and "Warcross" by Marie Lu are getting a lot of comparisons to one another. "Ready Player One" was adapted by Steven Spielberg into a movie that comes out in March. The sci-fi story tells of a future dystopia where the virtual world is as -- if not more -- important as the real one. "Warcross" is a novel with a heroine as its protagonist, that tells of yet another dystopia where virtual reality tail wags the real world dog. Are these novels a lot a like? Is one better than the other? Listen to this week's episode to find out! (in the photo above: TYE SHERIDAN as Wade Watts in Warner Bros. Pictures,' science fiction film "READY PLAYER ONE.")
Humans living in abject poverty are warring over the few of resources they have left. There’s an energy crisis, and fossil fuels are in low supply. The weather has gone to extremes. This is the setting of Ernest Cline’s science-fiction novel, Ready Player One, where human civilization is in decline, and life in virtual reality beats any day in the real world. This page-turning novel (which is being turned into a film by Steven Spielberg) follows a geeky protagonist named Wade Watts as he undertakes a mission to win billions by finding an egg hidden inside a virtual video-game universe called the OASIS. Among the many rich themes explored in the story is education, painting a picture that could provide lessons for how teachers and school leaders design for education today. EdSurge sat down with two interesting educators who are working to merge ideas from science fiction novels with our reality: Amanda Licastro, an assistant professor of digital rhetoric at Stevenson University, in Maryland. She encourages students to draw from science fiction in the writing courses she teaches and has entire assignments built around Cline’s novel. Sophia Brueckner, a former Google engineer, and artist who currently works as an assistant professor at Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Her work teaching engineering students to prototype from science fiction has been featured on NPR, WIRED, the Atlantic and a few other publications. https://www.edsurge.com/news/2018-01-13-ready-player-one-using-science-fiction-to-inform-the-future-of-education

Ready Player One has 4.6 Stars on 12,589 Published by Broadway books in August of 2011 #55 in the paid Kindle store 1, 1, and 2 in three science fiction indices. It's Coming out as a movie in March of 2018 directed by Steven Spielburg Blurb At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed. It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them. For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig. And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle. Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape. A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready? Am I going to read further? Of course I am. As a science fiction nerd, an online RPG player, and a YA fan, this one is right up my alley. This sounds like an exciting story with a lot of potential, and enough people, including my daughter, reccomending it that it should be a pretty safe bet I will like it.

Site: http://www.audiobooks.com/podcast | Email: podcast@audiobooks.com Welcome back to the Audiobooks.com Podcast! We're so glad you're joining us for this installment where we take a step back to check in on what we're listening to and review a couple recently completed audiobooks. In addition to finally discussing Ready Player One, Addy also gives us a synopsis of and her reaction to Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone. Hopefully this will be a great segue into next week because we have the distinct privilege of speaking with the author of Every Last Word herself! We hope that you will join us for that interview. Popular, But Bad? Before jumping into our reviews of Ready Player One and Every Last Word, we explore a handful of books in popular culture that have been categorized as overhyped. Many books receive a lot of attention or a lot of praise either by the media or by a particular subset of people, but it doesn't necessarily indicate a work of excellent fiction. In fact, in many circles, book lovers might classify these books as bad! We fully acknowledge that judgments of this sort are highly subjective. Books on this list include the likes of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games series, and Rhonda Byrne's The Secret, which all have enormous fan bases and have received critical acclaim in certain respects. It is interesting to see what people are reading, what is trending on the New York Times' Best Seller List, and contrast that with the opinions and reviews of those books elsewhere. We found a surprising number of classics that often fall under this banner as well. One such book is Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, originally published in the U.S. in 1958. Shortly following its release in the United States, a columnist for the New York Times wrote a rather harsh review of the book, not just highly critical of the book's content, but also critical of the snobbish intellectuals who gave the book so much momentum following its release in Paris several years earlier. At one point, the reviewer wrote: “There are two equally serious reasons why it isn't worth any adult reader's attention. The first that it is dull… The second is that it's repulsive.” A contemporary of this reviewer for The Atlantic, had nearly the exact opposite reaction. He closes his review by stating: “It is one of the funniest serious novels I have ever read; and the vision of its abominable hero…brings into grotesque relief the cant, the vulgarity, and the hypocritical conventions that pervade the human comedy.” As Addy states on the podcast, it's important to take each review and recommendation with a grain of salt, to understand the reviewer's general interests and to understand the subtext of taste. For every person who raves about a novel, there will be someone else to cut it down. Another classic that got its start with a bad review is Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, originally published in 1936. The reviewer found it riddled with convention—conventional dialogue, conventional characters—and yet states that Mitchell's style is rather unconventional for an early 20th century female novelist. The reviewer leaves the reader with a notion of puzzlement, as he praises the efforts of the author but has no distinct praise for the story. Now, over 75 years later, the book is regarded often as one of the greatest books of all times. In 2011, for the 75th Anniversary of the book's publication, TIME Magazine published an article that claimed Gone With the Wind has transcended criticism, along with Star Wars, in that it will never lose its relevance. Shaping Our Time Despite the critical or common reviews of books in popular culture, it is clear that these are the books shaping our times. Books like Ready Player One might not be literary masterpieces, but they are highly indicative of modern culture along the projected continuum of human history by presenting realistic peeks into possible futures. Given a certain set of scenarios, and a little imagination, we get a raw look at what could happen. Perhaps we won't see a future exactly like the one Wade Watts experiences in The Oasis, but the internet has certainly connected us to a virtual reality that is quickly becoming more fibrous than the physical world. The last century of books has brought with it an uptick in disturbingly possible dystopian future scenarios. Brave New World in 1932. 1984 in 1948. Fahrenheit 451 in 1953. A Clockwork Orange in 1962. The Giver in 1993. And then, more recently, cultural phenoms like The Hunger Games and Divergent. As much as our society can produce visionaries that seek to find solutions to the earth's problems, we also have novelists to paint word pictures about unpleasant futures that seem to be a direct result of humanity left unchecked. All of the dystopian novels listed above are currently available for your listening pleasure at Audiobooks.com! What is your favorite dystopian novel of the last century?
