What Do LLMs Tell Us About the Nature of Language—And Ourselves? - Ep. 23 with Robin Sloan

An interview with best-selling sci-fi novelist Robin SloanOne of my favorite fiction writers, New York Times best-selling author Robin Sloan, just wrote the first novel I've seen that's inspired by LLMs. The book is called Moonbound, and Robin originally wanted to write it with language models. He tried doing this in 2016 with a rudimentary model he built himself, and more recently with commercially available LLMs. Both times Robin found himself unsatisfied with the creative output generated by the models. AI couldn't quite generate the fiction he was looking for—the kind that pushes the boundaries of literature. He did, however, find himself fascinated by the inner workings of LLMs Robin was particularly interested in how LLMs map language into math—the notion that each letter is represented by a unique series of numbers, allowing the model to understand human language in a computational way. He thinks LLMs are language personified, given its first heady dose of autonomy. Robin's body of work reflects his deep understanding of technology, language, and storytelling. He's the author of the novels Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore and Sourdough, and has also written for publications like the New York Times, the Atlantic, and MIT Technology Review. Before going full-time on fiction writing, he worked at Twitter and in traditional media institutions. In Moonbound, Robin puts LLMs into perspective as part of a broader human story. I sat down with Robin to unpack his fascination with LLMs, their nearly sentient nature, and what they reveal about language and our own selves. It was a wide-ranging discussion about technology, philosophy, ethics, and biology—and I came away more excited than ever about the possibilities that the future holds. This is a must-watch for science-fiction enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the deep philosophical questions raised by LLMs and the way they function. “The year is 13777. There are dragons on the moon.” That's how Robin Sloan, author of the best-seller “Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Book Store” describes his new novel, “Moonbound.” It's the first in an ambitious and adventurous trilogy that's set far in the future, after AI and biotech have transformed life on Earth as we've known it. We'll talk to Sloan about the power of science fiction and his far flung imaginings on sentience, collective history, humanity's future and the remarkable potentials of yeast. Bestselling novelist and former Twitter employee Robin Sloan joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about how Elon Musk's ownership of Twitter and the rise of new platforms like Mastodon, Bluesky, and Meta's Threads are shaping a new ecosystem of social media. The co-hosts and Sloan grapple with the unruliness of Twitter over time, political polarization on different platforms and the risks of disinformation, and what the end of Twitter—now rebranded as X—might look like. Sloan reflects on the role social media plays (or doesn't) in authors' careers, as well as his own decision to leave Twitter. Finally, he reads from his 2012 novel Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. A bookshop is a special (maybe enchanted) place found all over the world and staffed by booksellers who seem to have a preternatural ability to put just the right book in your hands.  People have been buying and selling books since about 300 BCE. During the latter part of the Roman empire, when all the best homes included a personal library, the book trade was boomin'. Back then, shops posted a list of titles for sale on their doors.  The kind of store we think of when someone says ‘bookshop' was initially tied closely to printing. The first booksellers were also editors and printers who made the books, then sold them to the reading public. Eventually, those specialties split apart: Publishers worked with authors to create books, and booksellers placed them into the hands of readers.  And we're all better for it. In this episode, we talk about the world's oldest bookshop and discuss some remarkable bookstores around the world, including a bookshop in paradise and Scotland's National Book Town. We also learn about a shocking bookstore-related medical phenomenon! Then we recommend great books that took us inside the world of bookshops. Here are the books about bookshops we recommend on the show: The Sentence by Louise Erdrich Bibliophile: An Illustrated Miscellany by Jane Mount Spine Poems by Annette Dauphin Simon Bloomsbury Girls by Natalie Jenner Booked to Die by John Dunning The Last Equation of Isaac Severy by Nova Jacobs Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George The Storied Life of A.J. Robin Sloan's first novel, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, was a New York Times Best Seller, translated into more than twenty languages. His latest novel, Sourdough, was published in 2017. With his partner Kathryn Tomajan, Robin produces California extra virgin olive oil under the label Fat Gold. He lives in Oakland and works out of the Murray Street Media Lab, down by the railroad tracks. Mr. Sloan stopped by Ledger to talk about computer coding, the ways it intersects with fiction/novel writing, videogames, decapitation (and his lack of expertise in the field), and taking time to appreciate a good flower. Are you nostalgic about a book you read as a kid? What book from your childhood remains vivid in your mind? Our guest today, Diane Neu, hosts a podcast that explores that very question. The podcast titled Shaped by Stories features one avid reader each episode who talks about the book from their childhood or early adolescence that made the biggest impact on them and why. Diane had been a podcast fan for many years; in fact she's been a podcast listener since almost the beginning of podcasts 12 years ago. But some changes in her own life convinced her there was no time like the present to start her own. Diane talks to us about her very favorite spot to read when she was a child in small town Idaho, why she loves Jane Austen like no other, why reading children's books as an adult is an important exercise, and how producing a podcast helped her find her special brand of “people” when she needed it most. Books mentioned in this episode: 1- Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery 2- Betsy In Spite of Herself by Maud Hart Lovelace 3- I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith 4- Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell 5- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott 6- No More Dead Dogs by Gordon Korman 7- Neverworld Wake by Marrisha Pessl 8- Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen 9- The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman 10- The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde 11- Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan 12- Mary Poppins by P. Jamsheed Urban Winery in Preston is a fully functioning winery housed in a rather large warehouse in Preston. The space, like the wine, is packed with personality with an industrial brewery feel on one level and a cosy lounge and pool room on another. Gary and I sat in the lounge area of this working winery and had a lovely chat about three of his many beautiful wines, how he fell into the wine-making business and how a winery is similar to an author. The wine and the books: 2018 Jamsheed Beechworth Roussanne - honeysuckle, buttercup, fleshy grapefruit, mineral, textural Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg - This book starts out as the story of two women in the 1980s, of gray-headed Mrs. Ninny Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women-of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth, who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern cafe offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder. This is a delightful, moving, sassy, textural, fleshy and earthy read which deserves to be read whilst drinking a delicious wine like this one. 2019 Candy Flip - a blend of Pinot Gris, Mourvedre and Merlot - Pet Nat style - Red apple/Schapple, crushed blood oranges, rosehip and red rooibos tea flavours. Finishes lively and playful! The 100 year old man who climbed out the window and disappeared by Jonas Jonasson is a funny, clever and heart-warming debut novel. Kind of like a cross between Forrest Gump and Up! if you know those movies! The 100 year old man, Allan, is a wonderfully playful character. His love of vodka and indifference to politics combine with his ability to blow things up and get him into lots of trouble! Through Allan we see some of the momentous events of the twentieth century in a new light. It all starts on Allan's one-hundredth birthday when, sitting quietly in his room in an old people's home, he is waiting for the party he-never-wanted-anyway to begin. The mayor is going to be there. The press is going to be there. But, as it turns out, Allan is not... Slowly but surely Allan climbs out of his bedroom window, into the flowerbed (in his slippers) and makes his getaway. This is a lively, light, bright, playful and fun read and highly recommended with a vibrant tipple! 2017 Ma Petite Francine 100% Cabernet Franc - raspberry, cherry mulberry leaf, funky with some green pepper, red liquorice and red berry, earthy forest floor Mr Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore by Robin Sloan The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, but after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few, and they never seem to buy anything; instead, they "check out" large, obscure volumes from strange corners of the store. Totally clueless, yet suspicious, Clay engineers an analysis of the clientele's behaviour, seeking help from his variously talented friends, but when they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, they discover the bookstore's secrets extend far beyond its walls. What follows is a fantastical series of events involving secret booknerd societies, typography, ancient artifacts, codes and puzzles, the capabilities of computers, and the coolest bookstore you have ever heard of. It's a collision of ancient mystery and very modern, internet-savvy characters. It is a juicy, red berry, funky and vibrant read.

Robin Sloan is concerned with the intersection of media and technology. His first novel, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, was a New York Times Best Seller, translated into more than twenty languages. George Saunders called the book “a tour-de-force” and Robin kindly requests that no one say anything else about any of his writing, ever. I tend towards non-fiction over fiction, but I have recently gotten into queer YA fiction and if I read adult fiction it is either historical fiction or crime/suspense. For reference, I have read and loved almost every Nelson DeMille and Dan Brown book. I am not a fan of more traditional literature (think Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice etc) and my eyes tend to glaze over if an author takes two pages to describe a chair. Otherwise, I am pretty open and trust your recommendation! All the best, -Renee   2. Hello! I’m moving from Texas to Washington state in late August and would love recommendations for audiobooks to listen to during those 35 (!!!) hours of driving! I’d love something set in the Pacific Northwest, or on a cross country road trip. Fantasy (especially with folkloric elements) tends to be my favorite, but I also like mystery, horror, sci-fi, romance and post-apocalyptic. I’m a sucker for beautiful or descriptive prose, competent and clever protagonists, and weird magical people (or creatures). Bonus points for queer characters! Here is a link to my goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/9756176-rachel Thank you! -Rachel   3. I would love to find reading recommendation on books that talk about nutrition for those not on a diet. I don’t need to diet but i would like to know more about what is best to be putting in my body. Do you have any recommendations on where to start? Thank you!! I have found so many great books to read through your podcast! -Whitney   4. YA Non Fiction Needed! Rioters! I am in a quandary… Summer is sliding in and so too is the opportunity for brain drain if I don’t stack up some books for our rising Sophomore who has found respite from studies in scrolling, Tik-Toking, picture editing and other time burglaring activities. She’s got walls of books, all read, some re-read and most of which are fiction. She likes realistic fiction, suspense thrill, social justice, psychological thrillers, a lil true crime, maybe some romance, and doesn’t prefer to linger in long prose. Books that have moved from her shelf to nightstand lately are: Mosquitoland, You by Caroline Kepnes, Dumplin, Neverworld Wake, Home by Toni Morrison, This Is Where It Ends, Eleanor and Park and others. She likes scary movies, is a great playlist maker (I follow all her Spotify lists—they’re awesome). Nothing rattles or grosses her out. She’s a wicked artist and her caricatures are requested on TikTok all the time. She plays tennis and loves to win . I am hoping you can throw all this in your mix master and pour out some great Non Fiction that can grab a Sophomore’s attention. For this I’m infinitely grateful. Thank you soooooo much!! -Wynne   5. Hi, I love the podcast and I’m hoping you can help me. I’m a teacher looking forward to my summer vacation in a few weeks and I would love plenty of book recommendations for over the summer. I don’t really know a good way of defining what I liked to read other than I typically like relatively recent literary fiction, though I like plenty of lighter fare, too. I think I tend to like authors that write very plainly, as I seem to have little patience for overly wrought phrasing and writing that, to me, sounds too pretentious. I’m currently reading Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney and I could barely put it down to write this e-mail. Some books and authors I’ve particularly enjoyed are Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Sourdough and Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, all of Jhumpa Lahiri’s books, and Less by Andrew Sean Greer. I also enjoy some mysteries, especially the Dublin Murder Squad Series by Tana French. The problem is I am kind of a picky reader and there are plenty of books that I thought I would like that I end up quitting on after a hundred pages or so. Authors and books that haven’t clicked with me recently are The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead, What’s Not Yours is Not Yours by Helen Oyeyemi, Purity by Jonathan Franzen, The Wangs Versus the World by Jade Chang, and The Wife by Meg Wolitzer .I also tend to not love long books (anything over 450 pages). 350 pages seems to be the perfect amount for my attention span. What are your thoughts, based on what I’ve described about Ottessa Moshfegh’s books? I’ve read a few pages of both Eileen and My Year of Rest and Relaxation at bookstores and I was interested but I also wondered if I might end up hating them 5 chapters in. Maybe you can help me with my pickiness! Thank you for any recommendations. Best, -Kellie   6. Hello ladies! I’m working my way through the Read Harder Challenge and trying to find romance novels for as many of the prompts as possible – which has been really fun! Currently, I am looking for an #ownvoices romance novel from Mexico/Central America. I prefer queer, historical/fantastic themes to modern day settings, but Read Harder is all about getting out of your comfort zone so I’m open to anything. Thanks for your help

Who is Mr. Penumbra and why does he have a 24-hour bookstore? Is it possible for the average human to bake a perfect loaf of sourdough? These questions came to my mind when I read and loved Robin Sloan's two novels, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore and Sourdough. The characters who feature in Robin's books are fascinating and mysterious, not unlike the author himself. After chatting with Robin, it's obvious why Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, which came out in 2012, was a New York Times bestseller that was translated into more than 20 languages. His second novel, Sourdough, was published in 2017 and is just as fun to read. We chatted about the inspiration behind Robin's books, whether a 24-hour bookstore is actually a good idea as well as the new projects that Robin is working on in 2019. Holmberg, and Lola. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, or Stitcher.   Questions 1. I teach 9th grade Honors English in Texas and am looking for a title to add to my novel unit for the spring semester. I currently have my classes choose between The Book Thief, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, and Ender’s Game. Ultimately I would like to find a book that hits a different level of interest for 15-16 year-olds, and can provide insight into a social issues research project that will close our unit. Preferably a book that is relatively similar in length to the other titles. Love your podcast and thanks in advance for your input, Melissa   2. I am looking for fiction for my wife, who is a huge fan of heist movies, soap opera-levels of drama, and sexually liberated female protagonists. She doesn’t read fiction for the most part, but her favorite media include Ocean’s 8, Ms. Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and the Netflix show Cable Girls. Her academic specialization is refugee studies and the Middle East, so if there are any recommendations that take feature either, that would be fantastic. Thank you for your assistance in my overly narrow search. -Alex   3. A few years ago, I bought a copy of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, brought it home, and placed it on the bookshelf in my bedroom. Much to my surprise, when I was trying to go to sleep that night, I realized it glows. (By the way, this book made it off my TBR list in record time because the glowing cover made it really difficult to ignore!) Maybe a year later, I came across Radioactive by Lauren Redniss, which is a visual biography of Marie and Pierre Curie. This book also glows. Ever since then, I have been on the lookout for more books that glow, but have been unsuccessful. I had high hopes for The Radium Girls by Kate Moore, but much to my disappointment, it does not. Do you know of any books that fit the bill?  I know this may be difficult, so in lieu of a luminescent read, I would also accept a book in which the reading experience goes beyond just words on the page. I’m thinking something along the lines of the “Miss Peregrine” series by Ransom Riggs which was inspired by old photographs and includes those photographs in the print edition. Another example is Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan which encompasses multiple stories, including a fairytale. The fairytale pages are formatted differently than the rest of the book, music is woven throughout the book, and actual harmonica music is included at the beginning of each section. House of Leaves seems like it would work, but I’m a total scaredy cat and horror books are just not my thing. I like most genres (except horror), but tend to gravitate towards fantasy, historical fiction, and science nonfiction.  Thanks for your help! -Jessica   4. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I travel from NC to TN at least once a month and it’s eight hours both ways. I usually download an audiobook that’s either 8 hrs or a little more or 16 hrs so I can read one or two going to and from. I download from my Libby app to dull the boredom and lately, I’ve been listening to what seems like the same book over and over again. I recently listened to The Other Woman by Sandie Jones followed by The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (I know I was late to that one). I’m just really not digging this rut of sad female English main characters in abusive relationships because it makes for a depressing drive! I think Amanda was the one who said she only listens to nonfiction on audio, and I’m okay with that (recently also listened to Hidden Figures & I’ll Be Gone In The Dark on audio as well) but it would have to be super engaging. Basically I just want a fun audiobook that has the potential to make me laugh out loud. Other audiobooks included YA reads like The Hate U Give; The Fault in Our Stars; Will Grayson, Will Grayson; The Cruel Prince. DNFed Fates and Furies because I’m weird about audiobook narrator voices. I’m interested in some fantasy/sci-fi if possible. My latest pick for this weekend is Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. I’ll take Audible reads but will be sad because I’m a poor library science grad student. -Tori   5. Hi! I’m trying to find some books for my 8 year old who reads at a 5th grade level. Most books in her age range bore her and trying to find more advanced books is tricky as she IS 8 so sometimes the subject matter can get a bit dicey. She really loves fantasy (HUGE Harry Potter fan!). She has specifically asked for books that are really thick and will take her awhile to read. Series books are a plus as she loves to really immerse herself in these characters and worlds. Thanks for your help! -Starla   6. Hi! I’m looking for read-a-likes of some favorite books but by authors of color. I don’t have a specific genre in mind that I’m requesting, so here’s a list of some favorites to give a sense of what I like, and you can choose your own adventure: Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye, The Rook by Daniel O’Malley, the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier, the Lady Astronaut series by Mary Robinette Kowal, and the Murderbot series by Martha Wells. -Lindsey   7. Hi, I’m sure you’ve gotten questions about mermaid books before, but I’m hoping specifically for recommendations that are not YA but more literary with mermaid themes. I’ve loved books like Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock, or Alice Hoffman’s The Museum of Extraordinary Things. I’m a huge fan of Hoffman’s writing style even though (spoiler alert!) there was no real mermaid in the novel. I don’t necessarily need a romance element to enjoy the story, but it seems like all that’s out there is teen romance YA which is just not quite what I’m craving. If you have any recommendations at all for a richer, possibly mysterious read, I’d love to hear about it!! Jenn and guest Vanessa Diaz discuss Portuguese novels, ghost stories, unreliable narrators, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by The Devil's Thiefby Lisa Maxwell and Flight or Fright, edited by Stephen King and Bev Vincent.   Questions:   1. Hello Amanda and Jenn, This month, after a harrowing vacation planning session wherein I blindly threw a dart at a map, I booked a flight to Portugal. Shortly, after booking my ticket, I realized I really don't know much about the country and its literature. Can you help me find something to read that's either set in Portugal or by a Portuguese author before my trip? I've read a number of books about Spain and books by Spanish authors, so I'd prefer to avoid overlap. Although I'm open to non-fiction, I would prefer a fiction recommendation. I read almost every genre within fiction, but I tend to avoid YA and romance. To give you a general feel for my taste in books, some of my all-time favourites books are: -A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara, -The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, -Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, and -Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Many thanks, --Rebecca   2. Hi Amanda and Jenn, First I want to say I love your show and I read a lot of your recommendations. So I absolutely loved I Am Pilgrim and need some more books like it. I love books that have multiple plot lines that converge in the end. Please help me find some more books to put on my shelf. I will read anything except Romance. I prefer mystery and historical fiction. By the way if this finds its way on the show that would be great. Thanks --Brittney   3. Hi Guys! I’m looking for a book recs for good horror novels that involve ghosts. I’m a huge horror movie fan and particularly love ghost stories & found footage movies. In reading, however, I’ve stuck mostly with Urban & High Fantasy novels. I’m looking to expand my taste a bit this year and have also found that I’m running out of horror movies to watch. I’ve attempted a few Stephen King novels including “It" but have a hard time digesting the homophobia within towns make up. I understand where the novel comes from and usually don’t have a problem with being faced with the uglier side of humanity. However, because of that particular form of ugly, I’m extremely tentative when it comes to horror books. Can you recommend some horror novels centered around hauntings & ghost stories? Bonus if they include LGBT characters — particularly gay or lesbian couples. Thank you for your time, --Oddy   4. I am going through a difficult breakup and am finding escaping into reading a healthy way to deal with my feelings. I recently read The Night Circus for the first time and found it was a great book for me right now not necessarily because of the genre but because of the immersive environment the author creates and because the ending is generally happy. I started reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell hoping it would provide a similar imaginative environment but I'm finding the beginning a little slow. I am open to any genre of book as long as it is immersive and not depressing. Thank you for your help! --Lauren   5. Hi, I love your podcast, and I'm so happy it comes out every week now! I was wondering if you can help me find more books with an unreliable narrator. I have read Gone Girl, Girl on the Train, Await Your Reply, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Where'd You Go, Bernadette. I particularly enjoy books when you don't actually know if the narrator is unreliable or not until you get into it as opposed to Mr Ripley where I knew from the start. Thanks! I await your reply. ;-) --Kaci   6. Books with borderline characters or any type of mental illness? --Sad reader   7. Hi gang, Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina!!!!! Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers close up shop, and fast. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her—feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it. Lois is no baker, but she could use a roommate, even if it is a needy colony of microorganisms. Soon, not only is she eating her own homemade bread, she’s providing loaves daily to the General Dexterity cafeteria. The company chef urges her to take her product to the farmer’s market, and a whole new world opens up. Leavened by the same infectious intelligence that made Robin Sloan’s Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore such a sensation, while taking on even more satisfying challenges, Sourdough marks the triumphant return of a unique and beloved young writer.

Robin Sloan is the guest. His bestselling novel, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, was the May 2014 selection of the TNB Book Club. It is now available in paperback from Picador.  George Saunders calls it “A real tour de force [and] a beautiful fable...The reader is swept along by Sloan’s enthusiasm.” And John Hodgman says “In a time when actual books are filling up tag-sale dollar boxes, along with VHS tapes and old beepers, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore reminds us that there is an intimate, adventurous joy in the palpable papery things called novels, and in the warm little secret societies we used to call ‘bookstores.’ Robin Sloan’s novel is delightfully funny, provocative, deft, and even thrilling. And for reasons more than just nostalgia, I could not stop turning these actual pages." Monologue topics: Episode 300, Stephen King, Lorrie Moore, Teju Cole, angst, Mary Karr, false summits. Skylight Books Author Reading Series

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore (Farrar, Straus & Giroux) Robin Sloan visits Skylight to read and sign his debut novel!  The fictitious Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore -- from Sloan's delightful book of the same name -- is pretty different from Skylight Books.  For one thing, most of the books are written in code; for another, no one ever buys anything (a thought that makes us shudder).  But it's also the San Francisco home of a super secret organization that goes back centuries. The novel has adventure, puzzles, computer wizardry, romance, and how can we forget to mention that much of it is set in a bookstore? Robin Sloan grew up near Detroit and now splits his time between San Francisco and the Internet. He graduated from Michigan State with a degree in economics and, from 2002 to 2012, worked at Poynter, Current TV, and Twitter. Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore is his first novel.
