Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan—Also Known as The Fug Girls—On (In My Opinion Anyway) Basically Creating the Subgenre of Royal Fiction with The Royal We and The Heir Affair

I'd Rather Be Reading

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2024 43:30

Welcome to episode three of three in my royal fiction series, which we started with Katharine McGee, continued with Linda Keir, and are finishing with Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, authors of both The Royal We and The Heir Affair. I would argue that The Royal We released in 2015—actually kickstarted this trend of royal fiction that continues and continues today. In this book—which is inspired by the love story of Prince William and Kate Middleton—we meet an American girl, Bex Porter, who meets a dreamy guy named Nick while at Oxford, and finds herself accidentally in love with, casually, the heir to the British throne. Interestingly, the American aspect was introduced by Heather and Jessica in 2015, before Prince Harry ever met Meghan Markle the next year, in 2016. In 2020, the follow up to The Royal We, The Heir Affair, was released, and in this book, we find (slight spoiler alert here) Bex adjusting to royal life, including a scandalous secret that turned her wedding to Nick into a nightmare, leaving them in self-imposed exile. Trying so hard to not give spoilers here. In this book we get to know the character of Freddie more, and—you know what, you just need to add these two books to your summer beach bag, and you just need to read the books. Because if I keep going, I'm going to give plot points away, and I don't want to do that. I am so thrilled to have had the chance to chat with the dynamic Heather and Jessica, who, in addition to writing these two books, are the creators of the unparalleled celebrity fashion blog, Go Fug Yourself, and are known as such as The Fug Girls. In addition to The Royal We and The Heir Affair, they've also written two young adult novels, Spoiled and Messy, and have written everywhere from New York Magazine to Vanity Fair to Cosmopolitan, The New York Times, The Washington Post, W, Glamour, and more. One thing we actively and intentionally avoid in this conversation is the real-life happenings of the royal family—so if you're looking for dish and juice on that, you'll be disappointed—but you won't be disappointed in this chat, which is fantastic. In this conversation, we prefer to stay in the fictional world of Bex and Nick and Freddie, and I think you'll find that you'll enjoy it there with us. These two women are phenomenal.   The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

As Brooke's life rapidly unravels, no one cares except her mortal enemy Alison, who encourages Billy to help Brooke out financially (he does; she refuses) before finding Brooke living in her car and ordering her to come live with Alison instead. Brooke repays this kindness exactly the way you'd expect: by acting entitled to it and taking advantage of her restored proximity to mess with Billy. Peter is now scheming against Bobby on two fronts: in addition to trying to mooch information out of Alycia by dating her, he also hires Sydney for a side gig in sexspionage. Michael and Kimberly find themselves drawn back together by an extremely unlikely plot device. Jane complicates her relationship with Jo by setting up her new design studio in Jake's garage (???), depriving Jo of a parking space for her car. Sarah is out this week spending time with family, so we welcome Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan -- authors, fashion bloggers, and longtime Melrose Place fans -- as our guest co-hosts.... It's pretty wild how Sydney's choice to abandon a partially paralyzed woman on the beach and leave her at the mercy of the tides has really sent everyone in their orbit into a tizz! Sydney herself is worried that people think she purposely tried to kill Jane and desperately doing damage control. Michael, still not convinced by any of Sydney's stories, contrives a scheme to force Kimberly to tell him the truth about the incident. And Jake is just as attracted to the partially incapacitated Jane as Michael was. But fortunately, Jane is determined never to be as helpless as she was on that beach: she doubles her PT sessions, and even pitches in at the studio to help Richard and his designs land a deal with a distributor! Now that she's on top of the world, what's left for Jane but to start making terrible decisions?! Bobby's father Vincent gets sick of waiting for Bobby to avenge Jack's death and orders Bobby back to Miami. Not only doesn't Bobby comply, but he pre-emptively hustles Amanda out of town in case Vincent hires anyone else to do the job. At the same time, Peter is still working Alycia for information on Bobby's business...or just for the usual sexy reasons. Brooke begs Alison for help getting Billy to talk to her, trading on their temporary step-relationship. And seeing Alan at work is the first time it's ever occurred to Matt that Alan might be closeted for the sake of his career. Will Matt hang with Alan's choice, or strike something up with the hospital's new gay social worker? Don't try to get out of our podcast on "The Bobby Trap"! JOIN THE AWT CLUB

This week, Katie is bewitched with the polio epidemic and vaccines. As the U.S. takes its first tentative steps toward post-COVID life with the massive roll-out of vaccines, Katie takes time to reflect on another virus that changed our world: polio. For decades, parents lived in fear of summer- time polio outbreaks. Children went from happy and healthy to iron lungs in a matter of days. As a result, public pools closed. Adolescents were banned from movie theaters, and parents everywhere hoped and prayed for a vaccine that would keep their children safe. The Polio vaccines continue to provide relief from this debilitating virus all over the world. So that's exactly what we did on this week's episode when GoFugYourself.com's Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan joined Ralph Breaks the Internet co-writer Pamela Ribon. After the fashion show, they'll pick out their favorite stars from teen movies from the last 30 years, and parse them out from what characters played by those actors have been up to in the intervening years. Disha Mistry Mazepa, host of the But What Will People Say podcast, joins me to chat about a quarantine guilty pleasure read, The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. Along the way we talk about which countries are truly romantic, whether you can be any more American than a Cubs fan from Iowa, and whether I need to read the sequel to this book (I probably do). Don't worry, this (and every) episode is spoiler free!

One half of the GFY brain trust, Heather Cocks, came back to discuss Amazon's Project Runway with a big-budget twist: Making The Cut. As much as we love Naomi Campbell's sugar-free approach to, well, life, the panel agreed that Making The Cut has some structural problems (too long; dumb Tim 'n' Heidi "friend dates"), and too tight a focus on NOT being a sewing competition. Will any of us keep watching? You'll find out before we decide whether Emily Is Not A Crackpot for wanting period shows to air period commercials. We'll go Around The Dial with Call The Midwife content warning, the return of One Day At A Time, Barry, homemade Lego Masters spinoffs, Top Chef, and a Better Call Saul sound drop; later, we'll feel relieved that the Sherlock episode we all THOUGHT Erica presented as a Canon contender is actually for the Nonac. Kate McKinnon won, celebrity quarantine-busters lost, and Game Time stretched those family ties (sha la la laaaaa). Tick tock: it's an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS

The Crown has returned for Season 3 with new actors in all the key roles, and who better to talk about it than semi-professional royal watchers Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan of Go Fug Yourself? Around The Dial takes us through Dollface, All Rise, Evil, and Harlots. Sarah makes the case for American Crime Story S02.E04, titled "House By The Lake," to The Canon. Then it's on to the week's Winner and Loser. Get all your mates from the polo team over to the house and join us! GUESTS

Project Runway returns to Bravo for its 17th season (the spread-eagle), and Fug Girls Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks return to the podcast to talk about new judges, new mentor Christian Siriano, a new challenge "twist" we all dislike, and the same old reliable show structure. We make some shot-in-the-dark guesses about the season's eventual winner, too, while feeling relieved the show has a proper budget again. Then it's a super-size Around The Dial discussing Shrill, Instant Hotel, the return of Hoarders, Summer House, and Mental Samurai before we tucked into some wine and cheese with Caroline's Extra Credit on our favorite shows to snack in front of. Spring was in the air for Heather's presentation of a first-season Beverly Hills, 90210 for the Canon; Great British Bake Off won, and Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin lost, some more; and we had our Phil of "Easy Lover," Jacqueline's love-triangle Game Time. Where's Andre? He's listening to an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS

We couldn't decide which was the week's most important TV premiere -- the second season of Netflix's QEII drama The Crown, or Syfy's dark Chris Meloni comedy Happy! -- so we decided to cover both! Joining us from Go Fug Yourself are our official purveyors of Epic Old School Recaps of The Crown, Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan! Around The Dial takes us to quick mentions of Married At First Sight: Jamie & Doug Plus One, Encore!, The Mindy Project, Vanderpump Rules, American Vandal, and Norsemen. We consider inducting into The Canon Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's fourth episode, "I'm Going On A Date With Josh's Friend!" Then after discussing the week's Winner and Loser, we close things up with 2017's star-crossed final Game Time. Gather your corgis and listen! TOPICS Lead Topic:

Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan are self-proclaimed “authors, bloggers, and fashion assassins.” Creators of so many people's favorite celebrity fashion blog, Go Fug Yourself, and authors of bestsellers like the fortune-telling The Royal We (about an American who falls in love with and marries a British prince), Heather and Jessica share with us their collaborative process, their intentions to make the blog communal and someplace people want to come. “You always want the site, as your baby, to be something you're proud to share with people.” For links to some of the things we talk about: http://bedrosian.usc.edu/lahashtags/

This week, I got to sit down with Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks, the writers behind Go Fug Yourself and one of my favorite books The Royal We, for Raise Your Hand Say Yes.  In this episode, we go behind the scenes of what it's really like to run a super glam celebrity fashion website and write an amazing novel. (Hint: there's a lot of hard work involved. And diet cokes! And compression socks!) (Hint #2: Laughter helps a lot.)  You'll hear how Heather and Jessica have evolved their voices on Go Fug Yourself through the years, how they got The Royal We written collaboratively, what they learned from the earlier books they wrote, and their tips for anyone who's feeling shy about putting their work out into the world.  And, of course, we talk about Hamilton. Heather and Jessica, thank you so much for making the time to share your stories!!    Show Notes: Go Fug Yourself The Royal We Spoiled Messy  The Fug Awards  BrandCrush Join the RYHSY fb group & Get your Cheat Sheet

Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan joined the gang this week to take a closer look at Project Runway as it returns for a fourteenth season. Liv trolled us in her Face Off report, Tara recharged the amethysts Under The Dome with rage, and we went around the dial with Jon Stewart, Cait Jenner, Becoming Us, Nic Pizzicato Five, the resurgence of Big Brother, and the lies Saturday-morning ads tell -- before Heather wigged us out with a Melrose Place Canon submission. We declared a winner and loser, then scaled a traditional Egyptian burial structure for 25 Dave points in this week's Game Time. Work wives, dead wives, crying and cutting: we've got it all (plus a ton of TV Republicans for some reason?) on an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS
