Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition (2022/4K)When it comes to feature films, the 1979 "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" keeps getting revisited and re-released. Paramount Plus released the newest update to the first ever Trek film this year, so Drew Stewart (@StarTrekVisComp) joins the trio to share the history of the troubled film and its history (and need) for updating. What's changed along the years? How many editions are there? Is it finally "fixed"? Will previous critics of the film find something new in this release? We try to answer these questions and more - let us know if you spotted all the differences in the 2022 release.Drew can also be found on @StarWarsVisComp, and you can find his interview with Wired here: https://www.wired.co.uk/article/star-wars-disney-plusAnd his own article in Wired here: https://www.wired.com/story/put-original-star-wars-on-disney-plus/

Happy First Contact week! It was a big one. Star Trek: Picard Season 3 will reunite the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast and Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Cut hit Paramount+ in 4K. We have thoughts on both, along with a few Red Shirts to eulogize. So belay that phaseeeer orderrrrr and listen now.
Tony Robinson chats with the artist Paul Olsen. Paul's unique color scheme for the refit USS Enterprise NCC-1701 as seen for the first time in Star Trek: The Motion Picture has never been duplicated. What the remaining movies display of the Enterprise gave us lacks the beauty and awe that Paul created for TMP.
The Motion Picture: 40th Anniversary Edition. A destructive menace is heading directly towards Earth, and the Enterprise is the only starship in interception range. Admiral James T. Kirk must once again assume command to take on this threat and solve the mystery of "Veejur" before it destroys all life on Earth. The film that launched the Star Trek movie series has mixed reviews, but the novelization of that movie offers us a glimpse into the mind of the creator of Star Trek! In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther are joined by "Dr. Trek" himself, Larry Nemecek, to discuss the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Gene Roddenberry. We talk about differences between the film and the novel, the persistent "Alan Dean Foster myth," Kirk's subtextual relationship with Spock, the story from Veejur's perspective, Decker's ultimate fate, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings. In the news segment, we report on the announcement of Star Trek: The Motion Picture: Inside the Art & Visual Effects by Jeff Bond & Gene Kozicki, coming in March of 2020. We also respond to listener feedback from the Babel Conference for Literary Treks 283: Everyone's Tilting at Windmills. Standard Orbit 277: Emergency Alert, Negative Control At Helm The Motion Picture Theatrical Cut vs. Director's Edition. With the fortieth anniversary of Star Trek: The Motion Picture upon us there have been whispers of a 4K upgrade of the film and beyond even that, a 4K (and for the first time, high definition) upgrade of the Director's Edition from 2001. This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart discuss the likelihood of this coming to pass and also compare the theatrical and director's cuts of the film. What changes to the Director's Edition work, and which don't? Are there some areas where the theatrical cut is superior? Can The Motion Picture finally start getting the respect it deserves? Dimensions. Reflecting on dimensions has a long history in popular culture, from the geometrically minded satirical novella Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin A. Abbott to the 1937 film The Fourth Dimension by director Jean Painleve. But how is the relationship between different dimensions explored in the Star Trek universe? From a plane of two-dimensional beings in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Loss," to higher-dimensional beings like members of the Q continuum with their ability to pop in and out of three-dimensional space at will, Star Trek is replete with examples of dimensional interplay. In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling are joined by Trek.fm Patreon manager and host of Melodic Treks and Warp Five, Brandon-Shea Mutala, to discuss the physics, the philosophy, and the geometry of dimensions in the Star Trek universe. "Return To Tomorrow" Book with Preston Neal Jones Sometimes a bad thing 40 years ago becomes a good thing today. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew talk with author Preston Neal Jones about his oral history book on The Motion Picture, "Return To Tomorrow". Originally planned as a double-issue of the Cinefantastique magazine, Preston interviewed 60 people involved with the making of the first Star Trek movie while it was being made. Now these interviews are compiled into a 672-page book, making a "montage of memory" of what it was like to be there in 1979 in the lead up to release. What was the big problem with the making of the film? Was there more than one? And is it OK to call Trekkers "Trekkies"? We discuss this and more in this fascinating episode! Star Trek - The Motion Picture 35th Anniversary. Thirty-five years ago this week, Star Trek was brought back from the dead in not just a movie, but a full-fledged Motion Picture. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew discuss our first times seeing the film in its various forms, our first impressions, and how our opinion might have changed in the meantime. We rave about the music and the dialog scenes, and try to view it from The Original Generation who had to have been so excited to see their favorite crew on the big screen for the first time.
