MONSTER PARTY HAS A SONG IN ITS HEART. NOW WE'LL NEVER GET IT BACK IN ITS JAR! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, get their toes a tappin' for this monstrous music festival of an episode. Follow the bouncing ball as we present… SOUNDTRACKS: THE SONGS!!! Soundtracks are usually remembered for the emotion-evoking melodies that gracefully punctuate the moments of a film. There are many masters of this remarkable craft: Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, John Barry, Lalo Schifrin, Goblin, John Carpenter, Bernard Herrmann, and countless others that only James Gonis could remember. But occasionally, plopped in the middle of all this symphonic pageantry, is an actual song with lyrics that makes us wish for a Karaoke bar strictly for nerds. Get ready for a sinister sing-a-long as we chart the hits from campy sci-fi favorites like The Blob and The Green Slime, bawdy beach films, 70's and 80's horror classics, genre TV shows, classic kaiju films, the world of James Bond, Star Trek and Star Wars, an odd sampling of Jerry Lewis films, and sooooo much more! Helping us DJ this shindig of shocks is a friend of the show, who was our last in-studio guest before COVID 19 screwed everything up. He's a soundtrack journalist, editor, genre columnist, podcaster, and supervises soundtrack temp tracks for many films. He's also a really great actor! Please welcome back… DANIEL SCHWEIGER! As part of a Cinefantastique retrospective back in the 70s, Steve returns to an interview he conducted with Alfred Hitchcock, where the master of suspense discusses the making of his classic end-of-the-world story: "The Birds."
This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we look back at Paul M. Sammon's coverage of the making of Conan the Barbarian in the April 1982 issue of Cinefantastique. The double issue has three features by Sammon — a lengthy piece of reportage on the filming and interviews with designer Ron Cobb and director John Milius — and lots of behind-the-scenes photos. It's a charming bit of work that contrasts in surprising ways with Sammon's later coverage of Conan the Destroyer, which we also discuss. * * * Stu's book, Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground is for sale now! Author, screenwriter and journalist, Stephen Rebello, majored in literature and psychology, ultimately earning a master's degree. Subsequently, he became a clinical social worker at a Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital in Boston. But it was during a vacation in Los Angeles that Stephen secured an in person interview with legendary director, Alfred Hitchcock. To Stephen, the interview seemed like a natural progression of the telephone calls he'd had with Mr. Hitchcock while growing up. The interview, which turned out to be Hitchcock's last before his 1980 death, was published originally in Boston's The Real Paper, and subsequently syndicated worldwide. That led Stephen to writing for magazines like: American Film, Cinefantastique, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Movieline (where he was Editor at Large), Playboy (where he was Contributing Editor), The Saturday Review, and others.Stephen's book, Reel Art: Great Posters From the Golden Age of the Silver Screen has been honored as one of the best ever written about Hollywood. His second book, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, has been translated into eight languages, and was adapted for the big screen as Hitchcock, starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren and Scarlett Johansson, for which Stephen did several screenplay rewrites. He's written three "making of" books for Disney Animation, worked on story and screenplay development for various Disney animated projects, and developed for ABC-Disney a live-action musical version of the animated classic Sleeping Beauty.Stephen's critically acclaimed 2020 bestseller, Dolls! Dolls! Dolls! Deep Inside Valley of the Dolls, has been optioned for development for the screen.

Original Air Date: Monday 12 September, 9 pm EasternDescription:This week, Dean and Phil pick up right where they left off … With Dean enjoying the weather in Michigan, Phil in COVID isolation in Los Angeles, and Robert Blake's Cinefantastique interview about David Lynch's Lost Highway providing the basis for a “cold open”. The themes of transition, embracing what wants to come forward, emotional intelligence and more get explored deeply in the wake of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal-themed discussion doesn't end there, as Pablo Lorrain's Princess Diana biopic Spencer goes under the microscope. That just starts the movie talk, though, as after raving about Joanna Hogg and her films The Souvenir and The Souvenir: Part II, Phil previews her new film, a mysterious ghost story, The Eternal Daughter, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Praise gets heaped upon filmmaker Steve McQueen and two of the films he made for his “Small Axe” series available on Prime: Mangrove and Lovers Rock. Finally, Dean and Phil wrap things up by analyzing three comic book movies (and the industry built on comic book movies): Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder, Daniel Espinosa's Morbius, and Baz Luhrmann's Elvis (NOT a comic book movie, you say? Just listen - you might change your mind!).
The Wicker Man is a 1973 British folk horror film directed by Robin Hardy and starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Big Chris Lee. In his 7th appearance on The General Witchfinders. The screenplay by Anthony (frenzy) Shaffer, inspired by David Pinner's 1967 novel Ritual, centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle in search of a missing girl. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island have abandoned Christianity and now practice a form of Celtic paganism. The movie is well-regarded by critics. Film magazine Cinefantastique described it as "The Citizen Kane of horror movies", and in 2004, Total Film magazine named The Wicker Man the sixth greatest British film of all time, and during the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony the film was included as part of a sequence that celebrated British cinema. In 1989, Shaffer wrote a script treatment for The Loathsome Lambton Worm, a direct sequel with fantasy elements. Hardy had no interest in the project, and it was never produced. In 2006, an ill-received American remake was released, from which Hardy and others involved with the original have dissociated themselves. In 2011, a spiritual sequel directed by Hardy entitled The Wicker Tree, was released and featured Lee in a cameo appearance.Television actor Edward Woodward was cast in the role of Sergeant Neil Howie after the part was declined by both Michael York and David Hemmings. In Britain, Woodward was best known for the role of Callan, which he played from 1967 to 1972. After The Wicker Man, Woodward went on to receive international attention for his roles in the 1980 film Breaker Morant and the 1980s TV series The Equalizer. The film was produced at a time of crisis for the British film industry. The studio in charge of production, British Lion Films, was in financial trouble and was bought by wealthy businessman John Bentley. To convince the unions that he was not about to asset-strip the company, Bentley needed to get a film into production quickly. This meant that The Wicker Man, a film set during spring, actually began filming in October 1972: artificial leaves and blossoms had to be glued to trees in many scenes. The production was kept on a small budget. Christopher Lee was extremely keen to get the film made; he and others worked on the production without pay,(Something he seems very keen to mention at every opportunity). While filming took place, British Lion was bought by EMI Films.Iron Maiden released a single called The Wicker Man from their Brave New World album in tribute to the classic film.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$ Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. JEFF’S BIO: Mr. Bond is originally from Ohio & graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in Creative Writing after which he pursued his career as a movie magazine reporter. Jeff’s knowledge of film & TV music scores & their creators dates back to the 1990’s when he served as senior editor for Film Score Monthly. As a free-lance writer he has written articles for The Hollywood Reporter, Geek Monthly and Cinefantastique magazine. From 2003 to 2006, Jeff served as Senior Editor at CFQ, the later-day revival of Cinefantastique. In addition, he has written hundreds of movie and television soundtrack liner note booklets as an editor for GNP Crescendo Records, Varèse Sarabande Records & La-La Land Records. In 2012 he shared an IFMCA Award nomination for Star Trek: TOS Soundtrack collection & won the shared 2012 Award for Star Trek: TMP (expanded soundtrack) in the category of Best Archival Release of an Existing Score, for his work as producer & liner notes author. Just like the last time he was on the show; Jeff was extremely generous with his time. In fact, the focus of this interview was supposed to be Jeff’s new VTTBOTS Soundtrack, however I couldn’t resist asking about his recently published book; 'Star Trek-The Motion Picture; Inside The Art & Visual Effects'; it’s a film I’ve been fascinated with since it premiered back in 1979. So, before I knew it, we’d done an entire show without talking about the Voyage soundtrack. As a result, I’ve decided to split our conversation into TWO Special Calling Alpha Control interviews. In this one, we’ll talk about his beautiful new Star Trek coffee table book & I’ll save the Voyage discussion for a future episode, so stay tuned for that. But, for now, sit back relax & enjoy this First of TWO power-packed interviews with Author & Soundtrack Producer Jeff Bond. PODCAST INFO: This interview was conducted on 3 SEP 2020. A month late, we celebrate the birthday of the lovely Karla Chamberlain with her choice of topic: Sherlock Holmes. We span a mere portion of the character's film history with three thrillers: House of Fear (1945), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959), and A Study in Terror (1965), and we welcome Karla to the podcast to provide her thoughts. Who's your favorite Holmes? Basil Rathbone? Yea! Peter Cushing? Yea! John Neville? Huh? Do you prefer a slightly buffoonish Dr. Watson or one who can keep up with the master detective? Listen to our opinions, then we invite you to leave feedback on yours. Let's call the meeting to order... Tim Lucas had been writing various columns reviewing home video releases — one of the first critics to actually review the presentation elements of the release along with the content — before he started Video Watchdog, a magazine that Quentin Tarantino once called “the only reliable film magazine in the world.” On today’s episode, part one of a longer interview, we talk writing reviews in his high school newspaper of X-rated films, an impactful first viewing of A Clockwork Orange that hit him with both on- and off-screen mortality, his long run writing at Cinefantastique magazine, creating Video Watchdog, and his uncredited drafts that laid foundation for David Cronenberg’s film adaptation of William S. Burrough’s Naked Lunch. Though Watchdog ceased physical publication in 2017, Tim still runs the Video Watchblog, alongside occasional posts for the New Beverly Blog, while also recording over 100 DVD and Blu-ray commentaries. The 1930s had been a golden decade for Lionel Atwill. He was one of Hollywood's most highly respected and sought-after character actors. He was earning substantial amounts of money that offered him a luxurious standard of living. He was married to an extremely wealthy woman. He traveled often from East Coast to West Coast and back again, making the most of his homes in both - a large house and beach homes in Los Angeles, and a palatial mansion out East in Maryland. He had two yachts, one on a lake near his Baltimore home, the other on the West Coast. He had a valet to look after all his domestic needs. In his social life, he met and entertained rich and important guests - some of the foreign royalty - whose presence gave him prestige and status. It was a dream life. What could possibly go wrong? Ever since the ’66 series was finally released on home video, the bat-gods have continued to favor us with cool new stuff featuring Adam West as Batman. Now here comes the big, colorful, and informative Batman: A Celebration of the Classic TV Series, by Bob Garcia and Joe Desris, filled not just with production stills and backstage shots, but a great writeup built on interviews with cast and crew - many of them done for Cinefantastique 25 years ago with folks who are no longer with us. In this episode, Tim and Paul dig into this book, asking questions like, what does this book tell us about how the show was conceived and made? Does the writeup seem to spin a bit positive? Does all the backstage info augment our bat-dreams, or spoil them? PLUS: Bat-mail on the nature of camp and on a certain cameo appearance in Batman '43, and the Brian Setzer Orchestra's version of the Batman theme! Bob Kane, newsboy!
Some Voices (00:00) Waudang 1 (00:26) “Howdy Doody” Theme (07:17) “Charlie Brown” Theme (07:45) “Vertigo” / “Psycho” Theme Medley (09:11) Fucshia (13:06) Triologue (17:28) Duologue (19:05) Solologue (19:49) Belem (20:36) Painted Desert (36:00) Live at the Metz’ Arsenal Part 2 (39:29) Quiet Money (46:26) The introductory chaos comes from R. Stevie Moore's second album, Delicate Tension. Recorded in 1978, but re-released at least twice and peppered with extra tracks over the decades. The first proper track, at about 00:25, is sacred flute music from New Guinea, recorded by Ragnar Johnson and assisted by Jessica Mayer. Wonderful folks, I'm sure. Robert Wyatt and his wife Alfreda Benge had some clout in getting these recordings released on Rounder in 1999. Digital mastering was done in July, 2015 and the revamped version of these recordings -- Sacred Flute Music from New Guinea-- will be out in mid-April on the Ideologic Organ label. Switching up rather radically, the following three tracks are from guitarist Gary Lucas, who has played with such wide-ranging artists as Captain Beefheart, Peter Hammill, and Jeff Buckley, as well as amassing an impressive body of solo work. These oddball takes on movie themes are from Lucas's album Cinefantastique. Next comes the track "Fuchsia" from the album Amaranth, by the trio who goes by the name Icepick -- Nate Wooley, Chris Corsano, and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten. Wooley plays trumpet, Corsano is on drums, and Haker-Flaten plays double-bass. Monofonous, 2016. The following three tracks also feature Nate Wooley, as well as Zeena Parkins and Vera Westera. The music and texts on this album are inspired by Charles Baudelaire and are the brainchild of composer Bojan Vuletic, who gave the trio of musicians ideas to work with and then reworked their playing into the final product. Partly composed, partly improvised. See here for more details regarding this fascinating record, fugitive beauté. The next two tracks are performances by the MMM Quartet - Fred Frith, Joelle Leandre, Alvin Curran and Urs Leimgruber, on guitar, double bass, piano, and sax, respectively. The first MMM track is titled "Belem" and is from the album Oakland/Lisboa. The second track, "Part 2" is the tail end of a concert given by the quartet from the album Live at Metz Arena. These tracks are separated by an intermission: "Painted Desert" is from the album The Pharaoh's Bee by ex-Pere Ubu member Allen Ravenstine. Ravenstine was the Ubu member responsible for upping the chaos ante by adding analog synthesizer noise to the proceedings. Quite unlike his contributions to Ubu, this album is full of gentle, meditative sounds, albeit not without a certain edge. More info here. Finally, "Quiet Money" by The Remote Viewers, from their latest album, November Sky. More info on The RVs here. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed compiling it!

"Return To Tomorrow" Book with Preston Neal Jones Sometimes a bad thing 40 years ago becomes a good thing today. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew talk with author Preston Neal Jones about his oral history book on The Motion Picture, "Return To Tomorrow". Originally planned as a double-issue of the Cinefantastique magazine, Preston interviewed 60 people involved with the making of the first Star Trek movie while it was being made. Now these interviews are compiled into a 672-page book, making a "montage of memory" of what it was like to be there in 1979 in the lead up to release. What was the big problem with the making of the film? Was there more than one? And is it OK to call Trekkers "Trekkies"? We discuss this and more in this fascinating episode! Decandido; and been an occasional, and somewhat peculiar, guest on the public access incarnation of the Rift. He presently is the host of Mighty Movies Temple of Bad, Mighty Movie Podcast, and The Cinefantastique Podcast when he isn't haunting the dining room of his local Popeye's.
