"Now hear this. Now hear this. On this week's episode of Kirking Off the lads sit down to comment on and watch the Original Series episode, Return to Tomorrow. This is largely a circle jerk where Dean, Nathan, and Brian goof on the episode in a attempt to make each other laugh. This works best if you sync up the episode with them. As the plot will be impossible to decipher with these idiots talking over the episode, it can best be summarized as this: Three survivors from a race that died half a million years ago "borrow" the bodies of Enterprise crew members so they can build android bodies (thank you Memory Alpha) with big, chainsaw hands. BZZZZ! That was for any Sealab fans from the early 2000s. Alright, I'm going to show myself out now. We present to you, "Return to Tomorrow," from Star Trek: The Original Series." In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Return to Tomorrow, which aired on February 9, 1968, and occurred on Star Date 4768.3. The Enterprise receives a distress call from a planet hundreds of light years too distant to have been visited by any Earth ship. Spock determines that the planet is similar to Earth but older and that its atmosphere was ripped away half a million years ago. Spock detects a power source originating 100 miles below the planet's surface, and they all beam down. The landing party discovers evidence of an ancient culture on a planet whose habitable surface was destroyed long ago by a self-inflicted cataclysm. They meet Sargon, who Sargon occupies Kirk's body. This transference produces great stress on Kirk's body, causing McCoy to become alarmed. Sargon then asks to borrow the bodies of Spock and Dr. Mullhall so that they may construct androids. Sargon realizes that the temptation for him and Filissa to abuse their god-like powers is too great, and he and Filissa desert their bodies and fade into oblivion. Compliance Takeaways: 1. Carrie and Sarah actually didn't hate this one. At this point, that's really saying something. Is it good? Well, no not really. Does it need a trigger warning though? No, not really! See, progress.
We're thrilled to once again be joined by legendary director Ralph Senensky for our deep dive of his 5th "Star Trek" episode, "Return to Tomorrow." After being lured by a distress signal to a distant planet in an unexplored region of the galaxy, the Enterprise crew encounters the last three surviving members of a long-dead civilization. Led by Sargon, these powerful beings, now housed in receptacles, need the consent of Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. Ann Mulhall to temporarily house their bodies, so they can build android robots for themselves that will permanently host their forces of energy. But the being inhabiting Spock's body has no intention of vacating his flesh-and-blood host, and he will stop at nothing to keep it, even if it means killing Sargon -- and, in effect, Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock -- to do it. Despite some inconsistencies and contrivances, "Return to Tomorrow" overcomes its flaws to ultimately succeed as an engaging and entertaining "Star Trek" episode. That's largely due to a number of factors, including a standout performance from Leonard Nimoy, a beautiful score composed by George Duning and, perhaps most of all, the rousing and passionate delivery of Captain Kirk's iconic "Risk is our business!" speech by William Shatner. Return to Tomorrow was the twentieth episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with an advanced but near-extinct alien race forced to share human bodies to survive. In this episode Gerry and Iain discussed giant glowing orbs. Summoned by means unknown to a planet as yet uncharted by the Federation, Kirk and the Enterprise crew encounter Sargon, one of three survivors of an ancient race that went extinct half a million years earlier. Requesting the use of Kirk, Spock and Lt. Commander Mulhall (Diana Muldaur)'s bodies, Sargon and his compatriots Henoch and Thalassa seek to build artificial bodies to carry their consciousness, but they are not all committed to that plan. Return to Tomorrow was directed by Ralph Senensky, his fourth of six Star Trek episodes. The writer was John T. Dugan, his only episode for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered the pros and cons of sharing your body with a persuasive alien. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

"Return To Tomorrow" Book with Preston Neal Jones Sometimes a bad thing 40 years ago becomes a good thing today. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew talk with author Preston Neal Jones about his oral history book on The Motion Picture, "Return To Tomorrow". Originally planned as a double-issue of the Cinefantastique magazine, Preston interviewed 60 people involved with the making of the first Star Trek movie while it was being made. Now these interviews are compiled into a 672-page book, making a "montage of memory" of what it was like to be there in 1979 in the lead up to release. What was the big problem with the making of the film? Was there more than one? And is it OK to call Trekkers "Trekkies"? We discuss this and more in this fascinating episode!
