Temba, his arms wide!We have a new episode of Casual Trek for you and it's about language, no, not naughty language, although we're both British so we're VERY good at that. We're talking about times where language and communication have been important Trekian themes! First, everyone on Deep Space Nine is talking gibberish instead of Technobabble in ‘Babel' while in Strange New Worlds, Uhura's first away mission goes horribly awry when she has to communicate with the ‘Children of the Comet' and finally, we deal with one of The Next Generation's best episodes as we try and find out just who is Darmok and why was he at Tanagra in ‘Darmok.' Temba, at rest! Episodes Discussed: Babel (09:42), Children of the Comet (31:17) and Darmok (52:57)Talking Points Include: Catch-22, Sakamoto Days and the slow weebification of Charlie, Love Hurts, Sean Austin, is this Chief O'Brien's first worst day, Babel originally being a TNG script and how it would not have been as fun, the Odo/Quark dynamic, Kira having no time for BS, how irritating it must be to play a Vulcan sometimes, Sam Kirk is not this show's Kenny, does Strange New Worlds disregard Roddenberry's attitude to God? Uhura and Spock being friends, Miles misses Hemmer, when Spock thinks you ****ed up… you ****ed up! Troi's rather slim resume, Miles suffers the Darmok problem with UK-Specific references in the US, ‘Darmok' might be Star Trek's clearest descent into allegory, How ‘Darmok' inspired the scariest episode of Doctor Who, Picard's new jacket, Pedant's Corner: The Chuckle Brothers were a slapstick comedy duo popular on British children's telly. To me. To you. Rolf Harris was also a popular children's entertainer on British TV… until he was convicted on many charges of SA towards minors.Miles guesting on Famicom Dojo as Sean plays ‘Out of This World.' https://www.youtube.com/live/Ucv-hoyVmPU?si=hx_tb9k9qVCqZBMr

Dave and Andrew, their mics wide open because it's time for Darmok! on this all-new episode of ST:TNGeez . . . Season 5 is in full gear as we reach one of the all time classic episodes! The Enterprise D is dispatched to take another swing at establishing communications with the Children of Tama, aka the Tamarians. Seems like previous attempts have failed, so why not send the man who schooled the Sheliak? Remember what a pain in the ass they were? Things get off to a rough start as neither side seems to understand the other. Then the Tamarians kidnap PIcard and send him planetside along with their own captain, who offers Picard a sharp blade and a smile. Captain and crew are seriously befuddled. Is this meant to be a captain-on-captain brawl ala Kirk vs. the Gorn? Or maybe some sort of group whittling project? Who knows? Certainly not Commander Riker and the rest of the crew who race to find a way to rescue Picard without starting a war. Will Data and Troi break the code and figure out how to communicate with the Tamarians? Will Geordi and Worf find a way to penetrate the field that prevents them from rescuing Picard? Is the bridge that chilly that Picard needs to wear a jacket indoors? Find out in this exciting episode of ST:TNGeez, Not Another Star Trek Podcast.Even more available at: https://tngeez.com
THE MEME TEAM. Captain Picard fights a dude in a rhinoceros suit alongside an alien captain whose species only speaks in memes. It's an episode that's gained in notoriety exactly because of our cultural evolution into being -- or at least communicating more -- like the Tamarians. It's also a chance to look at the episode that begat Lt. Kayshon on Lower Decks. But is this famous episode a TREK, MARRY, or KILL?The grades begin at (25:26).
RAINBOWS AND SKELETONS. Our monthly animated spotlight series returns as Bryan and Katie Hampton from the Napping Through Hour Podcast look at the first two episodes from Star Trek: Lower Decks' second season. How is Mariner processing Boimler's absence and the day to day of working with her mother? Meanwhile, is serving aboard the USS Titan everything Bradward hoped it would be? The grades for "Strange Energies" begin at (18:01). The grades for "Kayshon, His Eyes Open" kick in at (48:10).
Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra! We discuss Star Trek's Tamarian encounter and how Captain Picard learns how to communicate using the Tamarians' historical metaphors.

We tie a yellow ribbon around these questions and more in Season 2, Episode 22 of Family Matters.Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. Distant Origin (VOY S3 E23) was recommended by Toledo, who says:"1. The theme of "people discovering that their past is different, interesting, and complicated" is a favorite of mine2. The idea of humans finding, basically, cousins in space is really cool (and raises so many unknown questions, like "how did they get there?")3. It's one ST episode that deals with issues of religion/mythology, and shows how those are used to structure power and identity in complicated ways (as well as how folks moving to change ingrained narratives run afoul not JUST of power, but of identities)4. I recently watched the 1968 Planet of the Apes and was struck by the parallels to Distant Origin: conflicts over "doctrine," over personhood and rights, over history; but Chakotay is a much better person than Charleton Heston's character.5. It's always fun when Starfleet runs into super-powerful alien races6. For an episode that's a parable paralleling "intelligent design" vs. evolution conversations, it misunderstands evolution HILARIOUSLY. And I think that's important: you can make significant points without being accurate in every respect. (In this sense, it's like "Darmok," where the linguistics make NO sense but the emotions do.)7. DINOSAURS."Distant Origin first aired on April 30, 1997, written by Brannon Braga and Joe Menosky, and directed by David LivingstonThe Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com | Bluesky | Instagram

The Bajorans give refugees the cold shoulder, the crew is SHOCKED at a matriarchal society, and the Universal Translator has more trouble with a new species than it even did in Darmok.[Episode discussion begins around 1:20ish, along with a lot of hails demanding we not tamper with the length (!)]FYI, if any of our Patreon crew have had problems with stupid Patreon rejecting your membership fees, please let us know.www.patreon.com/startrektnc
Jimmie; His pants wet. A classic sci-fi premise with a fantastic performance from one of Star Trek's most storied captains (if by storied, you mean twice died to save the white Captain.) Picard is beamed to surface of a planet with the Tamarian captain who only speaks in idiomatic references to myth. The universal translator doesn't jibe with space metaphors. But by uniting their confusion as one, Picard and the Tamarian overcome a phase beast and their frustration to learn one another's tongue. It's a wonderful episode for which our panel and the Trek community at large has an everlasting fondness. Temba, his arms wide! The Klingon Way is to fight for podcast supremacy! Our cultural bridge crew returns after a hiatus to pick up the pieces of the Klingon civil war between Gowron of the Large Eyes and the Duras sisters of the Large ... Attitudes. There may be too many storylines to keep track of though, as Picard pitches a tachyon pulse field using what's left of the fleet depleted by the Borg attack. (Canon!) Data experiences android racism from the guy sniffing nasal spray in Ghostbusters, and Worf repulses the advances of Romulan-backed boobies. Oh, and we learn how the heck Tasha Yar turned into a Romulan and it's all Picard's fault, as Guinan tells us. It's great to be back! Even my 98-year-old mum knew what that means.Peter Larsen - An author I follow has a son with autism who communicates almost entirely via song lyrics and dialogue from TV. He can make his needs known, but only because his parents have spent his entire life learning the context of the quotes. So there are people out there who communicate like this, but it doesn't work very well for a society where people might assign different meanings to the same phrase.Jake Wilson - It's impossible for us to infer the complexity of their language, just as it is for someone reading the Chinese/Japanese 'alphabet' to infer the meaning of the character for sun/light/masculinity/etc by looking at the brush strokes and figuring out what they depict. And impossible, without education, to know that placing it next to the character that represents the concept of harmonious natural balance creates a name that sounds nothing like the characters individually.
Sophie Katz brings Ekra to the table. Ekra is a dad on a mission, a Kenku finding his own way to communicate in a world that considers him less than human.Sophie and I discuss how we create and learn language, the trauma of having to speak in your oppressor's language, and other ways that bards can inspire. This character is built for D&D5e.Sophie Katz is a Jewish, aromantic/asexual writer, storyteller, and all-around nerd! This week, we're spending a relaxing afternoon on sunny Trenzalore, chatting with friends, visiting people we've lost, solving a mystery, bringing up an age-old question, and generally getting everything neatly squared away before the fireworks start this November. It's The Name of the Doctor. Notes and links Nathan's rant about giving the Doctor unnecessary backstory in The War Games Part 10 can be heard on the Jodie into Terror episode on The Timeless Children. Earlier this year, Nathan appeared on a podcast called Pull to Open, with Pete Pachal and Chris Taylor, and in every episode they theorise about where you might find Clara in this Doctor Who story. You can hear Nathan's theory about Clara's role in The Claws of Axos here. Here's El Sandifer's essay on The Name of the Doctor, and this is how she describes Richard E Grant as the Great Intelligence: “But Grant is putting no effort into the part, playing him as a cliched bit of leering smugness. Which is, of course, exactly what the part calls for – a big name actor basically phoning it in.” And finally: Nathan has a habit of making fun of Chris Chibnall's minimalist approach to publicising Doctor Who by repeatedly posting a screencap of Art Malik from the exciting trailer at the end of The Woman Who Fell to Earth. You can see him in action here. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, Todd is @toddbeilby and Simon is @simonmoore72. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on Twitter at @FTEpodcast. We're also on Facebook, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll leap into your timeline and keep bombarding you with a lot of gratuitous advice. And more You can find Jodie into Terror, our flashcast on the Whittaker Era of Doctor Who, at jodieintoterror.com, at @JodieIntoTerror on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and wherever podcasts can be found. We'll be releasing our final episode on The Power of the Doctor this week. Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well. We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which is back to kick off its Season B coverage today with the first part of a two-part inteview with Michael E Briant, who directed five episodes of Blakes 7 Season A, as well as Colony in Space, The Sea Devils, The Green Death, Death to the Daleks, Revenge of the Cybermen and The Robots of Death. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we watched Darmok, which is one of the best episodes in Star Trek's absurdly long history.
Star Trek: The Next Generation, Series 5, Episode 2. First broadcast on Monday, 30 September 1991. They were victorious. But Enkidu fell to the ground, struck down by the gods. And Gilgamesh wept bitter tears, saying, “He who was my companion, through adventure and hardship, is gone forever.” Now this is what Star Trek is about — kind, competent people solving a space problem, while learning about the importance of storytelling, connection and understanding. Magnificent.

Start Trek is back, as we introduce Peter to The Next Generation with the pilot, a few classic episodes, and a story arc to prep him for the first movie. We're covering Encounter at Farpoint, Measure of a Man, Yesterday's Enterprise, Darmok, and the Klingon Civil War arc.
Will just happened to watch a whole bunch of Star Trek: TNG when he was laid up recently, so we got together this week to decidedly NOT talk about Best of Both Worlds, Measure of a Man, Darmok, or The Inner Light, but instead to run down some of our favorite sleeper eps, genre work, and picks for some of the most under-appreciated gems from one of our favorite TV series ever.Support the Pod!
