Russ and Jared are spiraling into the high-tech fever dream that is AfrAId (2024), featuring a cast so stacked it feels like a casting director lost a bet: John Cho, Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, Wyatt Lindner, Isaac Bae, David Dastmalchian, Ashley Romans, Bennett Curran, and Keith freakin' Carradine. There's AI. There's teen angst. There's a dinner party from hell. Is the house haunted? Hacked? Emotionally manipulative? Who knows—certainly not the characters. Join us as we untangle this digital mess, roast some questionable parenting choices, and wonder aloud how many lines of code it takes to ruin a family vacation. (Written by ITMTron)

(It's not that many) Believe it or not, it wasn't until Jordan Peele's 2019 reboot of The Twilight Zone that we got the series' first truly fake president. In "The Wunderkind," John Cho stars as a hotshot campaign manager, Jacob Tremblay as the 11-year-old candidate for American president Cho takes under his wing, John Larroquette as "a" fake POTUS (but not "the" fake POTUS of the episode), Allison Tolman as the episode's sole voice of reason, and Jordan Peele as the narrator. We'll also be taking a look at some real American presidents portrayed fictiously in "classic" episodes of The Twilight Zone from the 60s and 80s, like an undead JFK and a very dead Lincoln. It's our Season TEN premiere AND our ONE HUNDREDTH EPISODE! Thank you to all of our listeners! We are thrilled to be back with our third Abortionpalooza, but much less stoked about the fact that thanks to the overturning of Roe V. Wade, uterus-owning Americans currently have less bodily autonomy than they did in Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Three.  We kick things off with a brief history of abortion depiction on television and examine season 3, episode 5 of the teen cop drama, 21 Jump Street, "Whose Choice is it Anyway?". It originally aired on December 11th 1988 on the Fox network. It stars Holly Robinson-Peete, Stacey Edwards, and Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks). The teleplay by Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex, Cat Person), is surprisingly progressive and they even go so far as to make an anti-choice terrorist the villain.  Then we tool around with Lily Tomlin and Julia Garner in 2015's "Grandma", directed by Paul Weitz (American Pie, About a Boy), and co-written by Tomlin, who put a lot of her own voice in it. Garner plays a high school girl who asks her free-wheeling grandmother (Tomlin) to help her scrounge up enough money to make it to an abortion appointment by 5 pm. Judy Greer, Marsha Gay Harden, Laverne Cox, and John Cho round out a fun supporting cast.  We touch on themes such as who *needs* to be involved in deciding what to do about a pregnancy (*spoiler alert* it's pretty much just the person carrying the fetus), where should kids get information about pregnancy and birth control, and why women should be valued for more than just their fertility.  On the Lunchtime Poll, we reveal some information we wish we had never received.

Sometimes the scariest thing can be the things we take for granted: our personal devices. Cell phones, smart TVs, Siri, Alexa. That's exactly what John Cho must battle in Chris Weitz's new film AfrAId (August 30). "Siri and I have a bumpy relationship. I've been looking at her askance for years." Cho plays Curtis, a dad tasked with protecting his family after their digital assistant turns against them. "Looking back on my own parenting, we didn't really think twice about the computer and the iPad, which is just a really open tunnel for the whole world to get to our children." Acknowledging the pros and cons of technology, Cho says "the film is really about, what if the con was much worse than we thought?" Cho jumped at the role because of Weitz. "He happened to write a fantastic film, but there's a chance I would have done it even if it was terrible, because I love him so much." And AfrAId adds another unique credit to Cho's impressively diverse resume. "I was [always] an omnivore when it came to entertainment. It's not like I stayed in one particular lane." Well, after last week's miserable slog through Family Guy, we've come to a nice palate cleanser with… oh, American Beauty? Okay. Well, our old pal Mynt showed up to discuss American Beauty, a movie that was considered such a masterpiece in 1999 that it cleaned up at the Oscars and, less than two decades later became almost universally regarded as a joke, mostly because of the you-know-who of it all, but also because of the argument that it was no longer as edgy, profound or as ground-breaking as we once thought. But upon further reflection it's still… pretty good? Do people get the criticism of this movie wrong? Do we really think the movie is on Lester's side, or does it agree that he's a reckless, misogynistic loser who projects his issues onto everyone? How does this movie reflect the immediate post-Cold War, peak-Lewinski sexual politics of the era? Why did none of these young actors have bigger careers? How did Mynt miss a very young John Cho in this movie? How has the show managed to go off on tangents about Aaron Sorkin two weeks in a row and yet has still never covered The West Wing? Anyway, stick around for the ultimate “hear us out” episode of this season.

Welcome to Season 4, Episode 17! This is the next installment in our series on ethnic enclaves that have disappeared. Today we're here to talk about The History of the Hawaiian Settlement of Iosepa, Utah. It was predominantly Hawaiian, but there were others from the Pacific Islands as well. Established in 1889 in Skull Valley, Utah, it was a place where Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders were able to gather in a safer, more supportive place that still kept them relatively close to Salt Lake City, Utah and the center of the Church of Latter Day Saints. It's hard to imagine going from the weather in Hawaii to the much harsher conditions of Skull Valley (especially in the summers and winters), but they did it… and they even thrived there for a time, growing the community from 46 to quite a few more. In this episode we share the challenges and triumphs of a community, and what eventually happened to them. To learn more about the area, you can check out the Iosepa Historical Association which is made of supporters and descendants of the original community.  In our recurring segment, we share what we're reading. For Ted it was the award-winning book Troublemaker by John Cho. For Gen it was the award-winning book Jade City, part of the Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. Hear our thoughts on these two novels!
