The League goes Trekking Through Trek again as they tackle Star Trek: First Contact. The crew of the Enterprise D travel back in time to battle the Borg for the fate of humanity. They also have to convince a drunken buffoon to fly a spaceship so aliens will spot him, and Captain Picard has to stave off obsession. All that, plus Data gets some! This week Matt, Clay, and John dive deep into the 1996 blockbuster Star Trek: First Contact — widely considered the best Next Generation film and one of the greatest Star Trek movies ever made. Directed by Jonathan "Two Takes" Frakes (who plays Commander Riker), this 30th anniversary classic pits the Enterprise-E crew against the relentless Borg Collective in a race through time back to April 4, 2063 — First Contact Day itself. We break down Picard's Ahab-level obsession with the Borg, the introduction of the terrifying yet oddly seductive Borg Queen, Data's very special encounter with her, and whether Zefram Cochran is the most reluctant hero in sci-fi history. We also get into the Rotten Tomatoes rankings across all Star Trek films, Jonathan Frakes' legendary "Two Takes" directing style, the practical model work by ILM on the Enterprise-E, and why the line "You're astronauts on some kind of Star Trek" might be the best/worst line in franchise history.Whether you're a lifelong Trekkie or just Trekking Through Trek for the first time, this is the episode for you.STAY CONNECTED!LISTEN & WATCH Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1crlHvsmYIRn4zjSdq44qn?si=5ee27c125ad54b70 The League on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@leagueofordinarygentlemenOFFICIAL SITES https://www.leaguepodcast.com http://vampcouncil.comTHE LEAGUE ON SOCIAL Facebook: https://facebook.com/leaguepodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/leaguepodcast Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/leaguepodcast.bsky.social Threads: https://www.threads.net/@leaguepodcastCLAY & DURSIN Dursin on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dursin Dursin's Substack: https://dursin.substack.com Clay on IG: https://www.instagram.com/claynferno Clay's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@claynferno Clay's Substack: https://claynferno.substack.com

This week, the hosts dive into The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and for once, they don't see eye to eye. In a rare twist, one host connected with the book while the other didn't, not because of the story itself, but because of its unique vignette-style format. Even with that divide, the conversation proves why this modern classic continues to resonate, sparking thoughtful discussion around voice, identity, and storytelling. You'll have to tune in to find out who was on which side. Cheers!! *Please be advised this episode is intended for adult audiences and contains adult language and content. The recording for this Talking in Carz episode starts a few minutes into the show, but once it kicks in, DJz and Jules go deep on Arcfall launch day, the new Borg Sphere loop, and the real math behind blueprint acquisition in Star Trek Fleet Command. This episode breaks down how the new hostile mechanics work, why killing hostiles without the Sphere does not really help progression, and how the Sphere's tasks and Maverick-credit rewards are designed to scale over time. DJz and Jules also tackle the biggest hot-button topic of the launch: blueprint cost, free-to-play timelines, and the hard choices players now have to make between Dive Bar upgrades, research, officers, and Sphere progress. They also cover Suppressors vs. Obliterators, forbidden tech, Chaos Tech, new refits, artifacts, epic Maverick credits, and why the Sphere is best understood as a loop-focused ship rather than an all-purpose monster. Along the way, they share the strategy advice players need most on day one, including when to prioritize Dive Bar 20, when Dive Bar 30 may actually be smarter, and why Jules' calculator is so important for planning your path. If you're trying to figure out whether the Borg Sphere is worth chasing, how long free-to-play acquisition may really take, and what matters most in Arcfall right now, this episode is your roadmap. #StarTrekFleetCommand #STFC #Arcfall #BorgSphere #TalkingTrek #TalkingInCarz #Scopely #STFCStrategy #MaverickFaction #StarTrek   00:00 First Contact event hype and exclusive real-life rewards 00:01:04 Recording picks up mid-show and the informal live-only format begins 00:01:34 Can players kill new hostiles without the Sphere? 00:02:55 Burning vs. hypothermic decay and the round-one kill loophole 00:04:07 Suppressors vs. Obliterators and early punch-up possibilities 00:04:42 The blueprint-cost debate and why players will have to choose 00:06:18 Best early priorities: Dive Bar 20, key research, then blueprints 00:08:15 How long it should take newer Ops 55 players to reach Dive Bar 20 00:09:05 Punch-down strategy for solo armada milestones and weekly credit math 00:11:24 Blueprint pricing, weekly returns, and the long breakeven conversation 00:14:45 Is the Borg Sphere paywalled content or a grind-to-unlock feature? 00:16:35 Why players are frustrated with a path that could stretch beyond 100 days 00:18:43 How Sphere tasks stack and improve Maverick-credit income over time 00:21:04 Why regular Maverick credits may eventually become surplus 00:23:34 Jules' calculator and planning your credit-spend priorities 00:25:30 Behind-the-scenes pushback that got blueprint costs lowered 00:28:19 Forbidden tech, Chaos Tech, and what actually comes with the ship 00:31:03 Why Suppressors matter now and Obliterators are a later-game accelerator 00:33:17 Is Scopely experimenting with long free-to-play unlock timelines? 00:36:42 Zephyr and Cochrane shard events plus First Contact Day meta 00:38:36 Free refits, instant jump, and whether Assimilate Sting matters 00:40:01 New artifacts, epic Maverick credits, and who they're really for 00:42:12 What non-buyers will still be doing this month in the Maverick loop 00:43:56 Final verdict: the Sphere is a loop-only ship, not an all-rounder 00:45:00 Preview of tonight's follow-up stream and lab testing plans

This episode contains: All three of your co-hosts are back to prove that 500 is just another number. We recorded on Rex Manning Day (you know, from Empire Records) and we missed First Contact Day (you know, from First Contact). Nobody remembers the Genetics Wars (you know, from nothing at all), or was it the Eugenics Wars? But you know what it really was today? It's the Great American Eclipse! “I actually live in the path of totality” - Devon, and like several thousand more people. What kind of bedlam and absolute riot would there be at a ren faire during an eclipse? Shouts of “BURN THE WITCH” and whatever. Ben didn't record last time because he had date night in the middle of Spring Break. Date night did NOT include seeing Dune, but did have terrible service, cold tacos, rain, and allergy medicine. Steven traveled to DisneyLand again (does he, like, live there now?) and there's been some major updates to the tech in the queues for rides. Even with the new games you can play on your phone while waiting for the rides, the Peter Pan queue is just too skinny (it was made for people in the 1950s, and I guess we didn't have an overweight problem in the US back then). Steven's ready for war to never change, cause this upcoming week is the new Fallout TV show. You lucky dogs, reading this in the future… you've probably watched it all, haven't you?    Death comes for us all and other light musings: What happens in the brain during the process of death? A woman named Patient One who suffered cardiac arrest became the subject of a study by neurologist Jimo Borjigin. When Patient One's brain activity was monitored after being taken off life support, unexpected electrical activity was still detected. Devon goes through the historical context on scientific interest in near-death experiences (NDEs) and consciousness after clinical death. More recent technological advances have allowed many more people to be resuscitated after cardiac arrest, providing new opportunities to study what happens in the brain during the dying process. Science may be on the verge of new discoveries about death, consciousness, and the relationship between the mind and brain. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/02/new-science-of-death-brain-activity-consciousness-near-death-experience This odd mindset shift regarding death could cure procrastination forever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC4jcrB4RHc   What does an eclipse sound like? Once upon a time, there was light in my life / But now there's only love in the dark. (Ben sings it!) An app called Eclipse Soundscapes was developed to help blind and visually impaired people experience solar eclipses. It provides audio descriptions of the eclipse's progress matched to the user's location, and also includes recorded sounds of animals reacting to the dimming light as if night has come, and a "rumble map" feature allowing users to feel the eclipse's stages through vibrations on their smartphone screen. The app aims to make the experience of the eclipse more accessible through multiple senses. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/what-does-eclipse-sound-180964203/ https://eclipsesoundscapes.org/ https://apps.apple.com/us/app/eclipse-soundscapes/id1262152991   Science fiction: Netflix's Three Body Problem has dropped, and it's so Game of Thrones in the best way. Ben presents Star Trek episodes 909 and 910. That's right, Disco is back, baby! And it's a wild Indiana Jones adventure this season, with strong ties back to a Next Generation episode that really should have been revisited a long time ago. Even though Devon and Steven poo-pooed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire last week, Ben saw it, and he LIKED IT. Kinda weird Ben wasn't excited about Ghostbusters: Afterlife before Steven gave his review of it all those years ago, and this time the tables have flipped. Kumail Nanjiani steals the show in the new Ghostbusters, but have you seen him in The Big Sick? Devon recommends. How do you like the new Science Faction website? It's actually legible! https://sciencefactionpodcast.com/ Next week our book club will cover Just Out of Jupiter's Reach (The Far Reaches collection) by Nnedi Okorafor. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C4QR4SX7

We value your time, and so, in an effort to be mindful of that, we strip out all the fluff from the news.  It's not lazy. It's efficient!    We recorded this podcast on First Contact Day. Apparently, that is a thing that happens. And if you never heard of it, then you are in luck - Lee is here to explain it to us. There's a new Forza inspired controller! It comes with a little wheel that you can pretend to drive your pretend car around. And actually, it looks really good. This could be a game changer for those that aren't into the full steering wheel simulator scene. And you can even swap the button placements! Not a fan of the offset thumb sticks? Swap them out! Want four thumb sticks and no face buttons? Swap it out! The possibilities are endless.    Vampire Survivors won the BAFTA Game of The Year award! Beating God of War and Elden Ring to take the award home. Well done to those guys on a job done well. And finally, some recognition for the amazing game it is.  The Diablo IV Beta broke a lot of records. Bajillions of player deaths, hours played, demons slayed all add up to a very successful beta by the sounds of it. And the buzz around this game is tangible. Looks like Xbox has a future first party hit on their hands!  And we finally have an option when we're looking at Storage Expansion Cards for the Xbox! Western Digital have released their own version and it's slightly cheaper than Seagate's one. Now we wait for the rest of the manufactures to release their version, and hopefully we'll be picking up two terabytes for $20!    Please remember to subscribe to our YouTube channel and watch all our VODs there. We are trying to get our hours up and we need something like 10,000 before YouTube takes us seriously. As very serious podcasters, we're galled that YouTube doesn't agree with us. So, it's up to you guys to help out.  And please remember to leave a review on your podcast platform of choice. Welcome to April 5, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate awesome artifacts and inventions that help us celebrate far into the future.   One of the biggest fossil discoveries in the United States was thanks to a bunch of chickens. When Nebraska farmer Henry Kariger noticed that his chickens were gathered in one spot on his farm, he went over to see what they were pecking at. It appeared to be a patch of minerals, but it turned out to be part of a mammoth fossil. And that fossil turned out to be the largest mammoth ever found intact. It was dubbed Archie and it's on display at the University of Nebraska State Museum to this day. On National Nebraska Day celebrate the Cornhusker State and maybe have a wander over to check out Archie the mammoth. Today we celebrate something that hasn't happened yet. According to Star Trek lore, a scientist will create the first warp drive engine in 2063 and meet aliens for the very first time. Thanks to Zephram Cochran's invention, humans become friends with Vulcans and the far ends of the galaxy are finally within reach. Without the warp drive, Kirk would've never left Riverside, Iowa and Picard would still be working in his family vineyards. Celebrate First Contact Day just like Mr. Cochran—with some cheese pierogis and some classic rock. Live long and prosper!
