Life had taken a hard turn for Betsy Faria and her family when she was diagnosed with cancer. But she and her husband, Russ, felt so fortunate to have a good support system of friends and loved ones around them to help. Including her friend from work, Pam Hupp. While Betsy and Pam had only been work acquaintances up to this point, Betsy's illness seemed to be bringing them closer together. Pam helped with grocery shopping and would even take Betsy to her medical appointments. But Betsy and her family would soon find out that hard way that something far more sinister lurked behind Pam's seemingly good intentions - something that would turn the lives of the entire Faria family upside down.
Moderated by self-proclaimed Dateline fan and Grace & Frankie star June Diane Raphael, join Dateline correspondents Josh Mankiewicz & Keith Morrison and Executive Producers David Corvo & Liz Cole for a conversation about how NBC's longest running primetime program evolved into a true crime powerhouse with a mega podcast hub. With numerous #1 podcasts, including The Thing About Pam, Motive for Murder, Dateline: Missing in America & Mommy Doomsday, along with a Dateline 24/7 streaming channel on Peacock, the team will discuss how the true crime juggernaut is reaching a new generation of fans with its signature storytelling.
When we've already heard about someone's personal scandal in the news, do we need to also see it dramatized with A-list actors? We discuss Todd Haynes' 2023 film fictionalizing the long-aftermath of the Mary Kay Letourneau story. We also touch on Joe vs. Carole, Inventing Anna, Dirty John, The Act, The Shrink Next Door, and The Thing About Pam, etc. For more, visit prettymuchpop.com. Our guest this week was our quick-witted, clever, and brilliant friend Travis Sentell, who's an amazing writer and human. Travis picked “Mad Max: Fury Road,” as he is an avid and knowledgeable fan, having hosted his own podcast that was all about this film! We discuss the many (or as many as we can) layers of this film in its messaging about gender roles and dynamics, feminism, climate crises, and all the amazing practical stunts, story-telling, 1980's comedy films that might horrify us now, and fun behind the scene tidbits! Our women in film history highlights were both appropriately stunt women! We learn about Kitty O'Neal, a 5'2” absolute badass who set so many records in the stunt world and beyond, including holding the women's land speed record up until 2019! Our next high-falling, trailblazing (literally she also did fire stunts) force of nature woman in film was Jadie David, one of the early African-American stunt women who even after an injury stopped her career in stunt doubling, could not be stopped, as she continued on to make film sets safer and more equitable for all people, and founded A Diamond In The Raw Foundation, which helps at-risk girls empower and transform their lives through educational and mentorship programs! You can find Travis' writing work on your TV in “Electric Dreams” and “The Thing About Pam,” which was nominated for it's writing no big deal!! And also through Audible! Follow him on instagram @travissentell or check out his IMDb website to see where you can watch, read, or listen to this wonderful man's work! https://www.travissentell.com/ (0:00) Introduction (06:44) Icebreakers (15:06) Women in Film History (28:26) Mad Max: Fury Road

On December 27th, 2011 a 911 call is placed at 130 Sumac Drive in Troy Missouri that starts the domino effect of one of the strangest cases of murder and fraud I've ever heard. On a recommendation, I started watching The Thing About Pam on NBC starring Renee Zellwegger and couldn't get enough. Not many fraudsters are as bold and brazen as Pam, and I knew I had to learn as much as I could to find the answers... Unfortunately it just lead to even more questions. When Betsy Faria was murdered in 2011, police aggressively pursued her husband, Russ. But the evidence pointed to her BFF Pam Hupp. And while bad things continued to befall people around her, TV news magazines homed in on Pam and her web of lies. Renée Zellweger stars in “The Thing About Pam,” the NBC dramatization based on the NBC podcast based on the NBC news magazine Dateline.OUR SPOILER FREE REVIEWS OF "THE THING ABOUT PAM" BEGIN AROUND MINUTE 37:00In Crime of the Week: tall tale.
It's time for a Collider Ladies Night bucket list guest! With The Thing About Pam in the midst of its run on NBC (and streaming on Hulu), Judy Greer took the time to join Perri for an extended interview. The Thing About Pam is based on the true story of Pam Hupp, played by Renee Zellweger. When her best friend Betsy (Katy Mixon) is found dead in her home, Betsy's husband Russ (Glenn Fleshler) becomes the prime suspect when all eyes should really be on Pam. However, when prosecutor Leah Askey (Greer) takes the case, her determination to win leaves Pam free and clear to continue manipulating the situation and hatching deadly schemes along the way. It's flat-out impossible to cover Greer's mile-long filmography in a single episode of Collider Ladies Night — or even a fraction of it for that matter. But we did touch on a number of pivotal experiences as she made her way from 1999's Jawbreaker to starring alongside Renee Zellweger in The Thing About Pam.
