Once upon a time, the trapdoor used to be a key element in many a serial killing. This week, Hannah tells Katy the story of the Benders--a family of serial killers wreaking havoc on the prairies of Kansas in the 1870's. From an old nursery rhyme that was possibly inspired by the wildest (fictional) story of would-be Sweeney Todds running a rural inn, to the very real tale of the family that lured travelers into their roadside BNB before murdering them and dropping their bodies down a trapdoor. It's a little bit backwards, but with no lack of twists and turns. The girls get a little in the weeds discussing the Holocaust, WW2, and horrible people (aka: Nazis), but it's all relevant, we promise! This experiment was directly inspired by the horrors of the Holocaust, and even though no one got hurt in the Yale basement in 1961, what we learned about a person's ability to be driven to harm someone is disturbing. Surprise, it's another Alcatraz episode! This time, in preparation for the one inmate profile Hannah really wants to do (Sam Shockley), she decided to preface by giving Katy the rundown on the four mugshots we have hanging in the studio, starting with the infamous Ted Cole and Ralph Roe. The girls talk about what led to the first ever successful escape from the rock, what makes a good FBI description, Chris Angeling your way out of handcuffs, and why you should never pick up handsome hitchhikers. It's long and it's probably unnecessary, but we're leaning into the hyper-fixation, and we hope you don't mind. We lied about this only be two-parts: this week, since Hannah can't stop falling down Alcatraz rabbit holes, she tells Katy more about the deplorable conditions of the prison, including arbitrary rules, the Dungeon, unlawful physical assaults, and a murder trial that highlighted it all for a brief moment in history. The girls get a little ranty in this one (it is prison-reform, after all), go a bit deeper into the criminal backgrounds of a few inmates, and plan a potential future trip to the Rock itself. Hannah promises to cover the original Morris/Anglin escape in next week's episode. So pour a nice glass of pruno, and get ready to never trust authority again. We hope you enjoy this week's episode! Sources: https://archive.org/details/escapefromalcatr0000unse/page/n5/mode/2up?view=theaterhttps://www.alcatrazhistory.com/rock/rock-033.htmhttps://medium.com/@thealcatrazblog/alcatraz-on-trial-dea6b99b0903https://medium.com/@thealcatrazblog/showdown-at-barker-beach-e64c5ba53189https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_YoungSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!
