Jackie and Danielle are closing out Joshua Jackson May-hem with a howl-worthy deep dive into Cursed, the 2005 werewolf thriller that somehow combines Hollywood satire, suspicious CGI, and one very confused plot. Directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, this horror-comedy had all the ingredients for a cult classic. Instead, it became one of the most fascinating studio messes of the Y2K era.In this episode of the No More Late Fees podcast, Jackie and Danielle break down everything from the movie's troubled production history to the unintentionally hilarious werewolf transformations. They discuss the stacked cast featuring Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson, Jesse Eisenberg, Judy Greer, and Mýa while debating whether this movie should have leaned harder into horror or full camp. The episode also dives into:Behind-the-scenes drama involving rewrites, reshoots, and deleted footageThe original practical effects that were replaced with CGIJesse Eisenberg's early movie roles and unexpected “glow-up”Judy Greer's standout performance and wild final revealThe strange world of mid-2000s horror trendsFunny commentary about werewolf logic, terrible decisions, and random celebrity cameosFandom hot takes about Joshua Jackson's villain era and the movie's cult potentialJackie and Danielle also share box office trivia, critic reactions, and their present-day Ratings Rewind scores while revisiting one of the weirdest horror movies of the 2000s. Whether you watched Cursed back in the day or are discovering it for the first time, this episode is packed with nostalgic laughs and sharp pop culture commentary.Be sure to subscribe, leave a review, and follow No More Late Fees for more nostalgic movie reviews, Y2K throwbacks, and millennial movie discussions. I went into George Saunders' Vigil with the kind of excitement you only get when an author has already given you a personal classic. Lincoln In The Bardo is still one of my favorite audiobook experiences, the kind that feels less like “listening to a book” and more like being pulled into a full cast performance. So when I saw Vigil drop, I skipped the description, hit purchase, and hoped for that same strange, powerful spark. What I got instead was something that never emotionally clicked, even with Judy Greer delivering a genuinely great narration. I talk through the moment it dawned on me that the central engine feels uncomfortably familiar: another story built around a liminal space where the living and the dying blur together. Vigil shifts the frame to modern times and a smaller set of characters, but the structural DNA still felt like a repeat rather than a reinvention. And when the story leans into a deathbed-rich-guy vibe mixed with climate change commentary, I found myself asking what the book was trying to be and who it was trying to move. That doesn't mean the writing is “bad” at all. Saunders can still drop a sentence that stops you cold, and there are flashes of beauty that remind you why his work gets so much love. But for me, those moments weren't enough to anchor the experience, and I left feeling more tired than changed. If you're searching for an honest Vigil review, curious about the Vigil audiobook, or wondering whether Saunders' new book is worth your time, this conversation will help you decide where you might land.Subscribe for weekly simple-home routines and raw book reviews, share this with a Saunders fan, and leave a rating or review. Contributor Alan Minskoff joins host Jo Reed to talk about three notable books—from George Saunders, Xochitl Gonzalez, and Lauren Groff—that offer rich and rewarding listening. They begin with George Saunders's Vigil, an inventive, full-cast production featuring Judy Greer, Stephen Root, and McLeod Andrews, where a youthful ghost serves as a death doula to an unrepentant oil tycoon. The conversation then turns to Xochitl Gonzalez's Last Night in Brooklyn, narrated compellingly by Elizabeth Rodriguez, a sharp, observant look at friendship, ambition, and gentrification in mid-2000s Brooklyn. They conclude with Lauren Groff's Brawler, a collection of emotionally resonant stories read with empathy and thoughtful restraint by the author herself. Together, these audiobooks show how skillful narration—from full casts to author performances—can deepen the emotional and imaginative reach of contemporary fiction. Audiobooks Discussed: Vigil by George Saunders, read by Judy Greer, Stephen Root, MacLeod Andrews, Kimberly Farr, Mark Bramhall, Barrett Leddy, Eric Jason Martin, Karissa Vacker, Sunil Malhotra, Cassandra Campbell, Kimberly M. Mike and Kenny review and spot faith in the second film this year based on a novel by Stephen King, The Long Walk. Stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Mark Hamil, Judy Greer and was directed by Francis Lawrence. The Long Walk was the first novel Stephen King wrote although it was not published for many years. Some of the film and faith themes we discuss from The Long Walk are echoed in later novels and series such as The Hunger Games, Squid Games. Faith Spotted: Persons of faith are called to be content with what one has Psalm 46. Greed in acquiring material, or social wealth and reptuation is contrary to the teachings of both testaments of the Bible. Set in the midst of a post apocolyptic America, the story presents 50 or 100 persons (depending on the film or novel) that are willing to put themselves in the gravest danger for a 1% or 2% chance to win a large payout. The countryside and towns are presented as bleak and the people as joyless with litte to no hope in life. Faith allows persons to find meaning, joy and purpose in life and Philippians 4 calls Christians to rejoice in the Lord, always as, regardless of one's situation, the presence of the Lord is always with one and the promises of the Gospel of new life bring joy into one's life, regardless of the challeges or even suffering one is facing. All life has value because all people are children of God. Killing goes agains the commandments of both testaments. Not only are such contests that pit living persons against another not acceptable, participating in, or watching / condoning, them are incompatible with the teachings and life example of Christ. Those in leadership are charged with the responsibilty of the welfare of citizens and others in their cities, states, and nations. They are called to act as shepherds in offering care and protection to all people. The film depicts the games as a way those in control distract and control the population in much the same way as the gladiatorial games during the Roman rule. Such a strategy is not faithful leadership.
This week, Evan and Megan discuss ELEANOR THE GREAT (3:14), Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut starring June Squibb as a 94-year-old Jewish woman who's grieving, tells a lie that spirals beyond her control, and befriends a college student (Erin Kellyman). The great performances anchor the film. Then we all (Dave, Evan, and Megan) talk about DEAD OF WINTER (24:21), Brian Kirk's action thriller starring Emma Thompson as a woman travelling solo in the woods who discovers a kidnapped teen and must contend with the kidnappers. We had divergent opinions on the film, but we all agree Judy Greer is fantastic as a desperate and ruthless villain. And on our Patreon bonus episode, we converse about the Robert Redford movie poll winner: the 1992 comedy-caper SNEAKERS!
You may think the American economy stinks now but it's still not bad enough to warrant the twisted walk that's portrayed in the movie “The Long Walk.” This movie takes place in a alternative history that resembles the 1950s. There was a great war and most people are in poverty. However there is an annual event called The Long Walk that's meant to inspire every state in America to work harder to make the country prosper again. A man from each state is chosen to participate in The Long Walk from a pool of men from each state who signed up. If you are the last man remaining at the end, you're rich and you are granted one wish for whatever you want. The rules? Very simple. If you stop walking long enough, you get shot dead. So lace up your Nikes and try not to have too much fun! The Long Walk is run by a character called The Major who is portrayed to be a malevolent, heartless blowhard so it makes sense he's played by Mark Hamill. Is it worth checking this movie out at the theater? Check out this episode to find out. “The Long Walk” also stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, Roman Griffin Davis and Judy Greer. The Long Walk is one of the better ensemble castings this year, with deep rooted character development amongst a group of mostly charming young men who have felt the need to make the ultimate sacrifice. It fits right in line with how King's tales delicately handle camaraderie in dystopian dramas where people are subjected to horrific outcomes while striving for new hope. Check our our review to hear while Brandon can't wait to experience this beautifully tragic film again. Playing in Theaters ♦♦ Director: Francis Lawrence Writers: J.T.
