(Disney/Steve Wilkie)MADELINE BREWER After the thrilling climax of Episode 9, this finale took a quieter approach, focusing on resolution, emotional closure, and laying the groundwork for The Testaments, the upcoming sequel series based on Margaret Atwood's novel. Paul and Caroline generally appreciated the emotional payoff and the sense of closure for characters we've followed closely for eight years. But not in every case. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)YVONNE STRAHOVSKI They didn't shy away from highlighting some storytelling choices that didn't fully land. While not as critical as some online commenters, they felt that the finale spent a bit too much time on indulgent flashbacks and montages, time which could have been better used to deepen certain pivotal moments. THE HANDMAID'S TALE Season 6 Episode 8 - “Exodus” - June and Moira execute their dangerous plan. Serena makes a big commitment. (Disney/Steve Wilkie). The revolution has begun. In The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 8 "Exodus", the carefully plotted rebellion against Gilead erupts during Serena Joy's wedding, shifting the tide of power in ways we've long hoped—and feared. On this week's podcast, Paul and Caroline unpack the episode's three central storylines and what they mean for the final stretch of the series. The episode unfolds through three distinct perspectives: Serena's Wedding:It's the centerpiece of the rebellion. The plan to bomb Jezebels has been replaced with something quieter but just as deadly: poison. Serena's maroon wedding cake becomes a focal point—rich in symbolism, according to Paul and Caroline, who debate its possible meanings. The poison weakens the guests, setting the stage for the handmaids to strike later that night. But what comes next for Serena? In the final scenes inside her and Wharton's new home, we're left wondering: Is she a survivor, a pawn, or a player? THE HANDMAID'S TALE Season 6 Episode 8 - “Exodus” - June and Moira execute their dangerous plan. Serena makes a big commitment. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)ELISABETH MOSS June's Command:June leads from the front, orchestrating the handmaids' infiltration and managing the rebellion in real time. Paul and Caroline discuss June's transformation into a true field general—steely, smart, and still deeply human. They also wrestle with the looming question: what does a “win” even look like for June at this point, and is it within reach? THE HANDMAID'S TALE Season 6 Episode 8 - “Exodus” - June and Moira execute their dangerous plan. Serena makes a big commitment. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)THE HANDMAID'S TALE Aunt Lydia's Reckoning:The final storyline brings us to Aunt Lydia, whose breaking point finally arrives at the Red Center. Surrounded by Janine and the other handmaids, she is forced to confront the consequences of her life's work. In her quiet moments and subtle gestures, a transformation begins—one that may redefine her future in Gilead. They're not just helping—they're leading an upcoming bombing operation. June begs them to leave with her, to put safety first and return to Alaska—but when they won't, she takes matters into her own hands. She forces her way into their plans, determined to protect them, even if it means pushing them away. The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 4 "Promotion". Moira (Sonequa Martin-Green). Image by Hulu. The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 3 - “Devotion” (Hulu)ANN DOWD The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 3, “Devotion,” brings the action, the politics, and the heartbreak. Hosts Paul and Caroline are back to unpack it all in our latest podcast episode. This time, June and Nick join forces on a high-stakes mission: rescuing Luke and Moira, who are trapped in no man's land after their work with Mayday draws the deadly attention of Gilead's guardian patrols. The tension is thick, and the emotional stakes are even higher. Meanwhile, in New Bethlehem, Commander Lawrence and Serena Joy begin their uneasy alliance as they host international delegates. The goal? Repatriate American refugees back to Gilead—under the pretense of safety and peace. But can such a place ever truly be safe? And back in the heart of Gilead, Aunt Lydia makes a devastating discovery: Janine has been sent to Jezebels. For Lydia, it's a cruel betrayal of everything she believed about Janine's value—and a sign that the system she's long upheld may be more broken than she can justify. In this podcast episode, we explore the theme of devotion—to people, causes, and institutions—and how that devotion is tested at every turn. With thrilling rescues, shifting alliances, and moral reckoning, “Devotion” delivers a heavy, layered hour of television. The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 2 - “Exile” (Hulu)YVONNE STRAHOVSKI The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 2, “Exile,” aired alongside the premiere—and we're back with our thoughts, theories, and plenty to say about these seismic shifts. In this episode, we finally get a long-awaited reunion: June and Nichole are with June's mother, Holly, living in the remote safety of Alaska. It's a rare moment of peace for June, but you can feel the storm building on the horizon. Meanwhile, Serena's journey takes a major turn. After arriving at a tranquil farm that shelters women and children refugees, it seems like she's found a safe haven—but it's short-lived. Gilead knows exactly where she is. And when Commander Lawrence offers her a way back—not just as a citizen, but as a leader in New Bethlehem—Serena chooses power over peace. In this episode of the podcast, hosts Paul and Caroline dive deep into the emotional weight of the mother-daughter reunion, the symbolism behind the episode's title, and what Serena's latest decision says about her ongoing struggle for identity and control. We're witnessing a season that's not pulling any punches—and “Exile” proves that safety and freedom are never guaranteed in The Handmaid's Tale. The Interview with Henry begins at Time Code: 4:53 Join the Decorating the Set Community by subscribing to our Official Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/decoratingthesetpodcast)! Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: henry bronchtein Henry Bronchtein was born and raised in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York, the youngest of three sons of a cab-driver father and a homemaker. Henry attended New York University's Tisch School of The Arts to study filmmaking. Perhaps his first big break was working on Raging Bull (1980), as the apprentice assistant director to fellow NYU alumnus, Martin Scorsese. "As a child I was an avid reader, devouring every novel and every comic book put in front of me. I am a member of the first generation to be raised on television. Growing up my favorite shows were Rod Serling 's The Twilight Zone (1959), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), I Love Lucy (1951), and The Honeymooners (1955). I particularly loved Jackie Gleason''s vision of the working-class life of a bus driver living in Bensonhurst. It not only made me laugh it seemed to illustrate and illuminate my life. "When I was sick, my mother would go to the corner candy store and buy every comic book on the stand for me. She would install me on the living room couch, in front of the TV with them. There I'd lay with a blanket, a pillow and a glass of hot tea laced with a teaspoon of cognac; this was the prescription for healing. I would rest there for hours, reading and watching television, engrossed in the worlds of drama and comedy. At an early age I experienced their ability to reach me in important ways." ### For over 35 years, Beth Kushnick has created character-driven settings for countless award-winning television series and feature films. Welcome to the Season 6 Premiere of Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick! We kick off the new season with a fantastic interview with Production Designer and Beth collaborator, Michael Fitzgerald. From his teenage days interning at Shakespeare Santa Cruz to his collaborations with Beth on Rare Objects and Starz's Run The World and, to most recently, working on Disney's fantastic 2024 film, Out of My Mind, Michael has seemingly done it all in the business. We are so lucky for him to bring us his love of production design and his boundless passion and creativity. A must listen to episode to begin the new season! The Interview with Michael begins at Time Code: 6:06 Join the Decorating the Set Community by subscribing to our Official Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/decoratingthesetpodcast)! Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: MICHAEL FITZGERALD Production Designer Michael Fitzgerald is a California native, having begun as a teenager interning for Shakespeare Santa Cruz and regional theater companies, he continued his exploration of theater and set design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His subsequent move into the realm of feature films allowed him to nurture close collaborations with directors, a creative relationship that he values immensely. His recent forays in the documentary world have also enabled him to bring the directors' very personal visions to the screen. Michael is currently working on the documentary series People of the West, recounting and visualizing the rich and complex history of California's native peoples. Out of My Mind, is Michael's third feature film collaboration with director Amber Sealey, after the Ted Bundy prison drama No Man of God (2021) starring Elijah Wood. Amber and Michael met at Shakespeare Santa Cruz as teenagers! Out of My Mind (2024) is Disney's very first film featuring a nonverbal lead actor with cerebral palsy. The challenge for Michael was two-fold: to create realistic spaces at the character's home, school environments and other locations, and also to make every working set completely accessible, to accommodate the numerous actors in the cast with disabilities. Michael has always had a strong intuition for how to best bring a story to life, creating worlds that are visually authentic and in synch with the tone of each project. ATX Season 13 Day 4 For ATX Season 13 - Day 4 and our shortest day of coverage, the team's schedule was still full up until the moment of our departure from Austin and back into our everyday lives. Paul attended a career retrospective and Q&A with actor Toby Huss, who was in attendance at ATX thanks to his role in Halt and Catch Fire and the cast reunion held earlier. You may not like all of his characters, but you have to love his skill and dedication to artistic expression. Mike had the first of two true "ATX moments" at the panel for The Way Home. He explains how he went into the panel with no information about the series and after hearing the passion the cast and crew have for their show, came away wanting to seek it out. Paul attended the "Breakout Award" ceremony and presentation to Devery Jacobs. Mike's second moment came at a "mystery guest" panel. Not every ATX season advertises the moments when celebrities show up and interact with fans - but those moments still seem to happen every year. This year they made it an official panel with guests Austin Nichols and Adrienne Palicki. Paul's final panel of the day and for the show was a SUITS retrospective with key members of the cast in attendance. Join us for a detailed and entertaining recap of Day 4 at the ATX TV Festival.
