Episode Notes S6E28 - Join us as we chat with The Acquitted Russ Faria. He'll be in the house catching us all up on the aftermath of his wife Betsy's Murder Case. Russell Faria, convicted in 2013 for the first degree murder of his wife, Betsy Faria (of Troy, Missouri) in 2011, was acquitted of the charges during November 2015 in St. Louis Circuit Court. Nearly two years after Faria was convicted and four years after the brutal stabbing of Betsy in their home, attorney Joel Schwartz of the RSRG Law Firm was able to present new evidence advocating for the acquittal of Mr. Faria, which ultimately resulted in the reversal of the case's 2013 verdict. Faria had served two years of his life sentence when an appeals court ordered the judge to revisit several issues in the case; specifically the additional investigation of other potential suspects and evidence that was hidden during the investigatory process in 2011. NBC discusses the decision for a retrial in a story published in November 2015, right around the time the acquittal was announced. Additional complications in the case presented during the new trial afforded our attorney, Mr. Schwartz, the opportunity to present a theory pertaining to Betsy's $150,000 life insurance policy that close friend Pamela Hupp became a beneficiary of mere days before Ms. Faria was murdered. Ongoing litigation in civil court between the Faria's daughters and Ms. Hupp is still pending as Hupp was, indeed, awarded the large sum of money. Nedávno se jí vrátila rakovina a prognóza nebyla dobrá. I tak ale doufala, že bude mít ještě trochu času. Nedávno s rodinou oslavila Vánoce. Měla dvě dospívající dcery, manžela a spoustu přátel, kteří jí v posledních týdnech pomáhali zvládat běžné dny. Jenže konce roku se už nedožila. Dva dny po Vánocích byla nalezena mrtvá. A nebyla to rakovina, co ji zabilo. Byla zavražděna.

Bone Deep: Untangling the Betsy Faria Murder CaseDec 12, 2021The explosive, first-ever insider's account of a case that continues to fascinate the public—the shocking wrongful conviction of Russell Faria for his wife's murder—a gripping read told by New York Times bestselling true crime expert Charles Bosworth Jr. and Joel J. Schwartz, the defense attorney who battled for justice, and ultimately prevailed. On December 27th, 2011, Russell Faria returned to his Troy, Missouri, home after his weekly game night with friends to an unthinkable, grisly scene: His wife, Betsy, lay dead, a knife still lodged in her neck. She'd been stabbed fifty-five times. First responders concluded that Betsy was dead for hours when Russ discovered her. No blood was found implicating Russ, and surveillance video, receipts, and friends' testimony all supported his alibi. Yet incredibly, police and the prosecuting attorney ignored the evidence. In their minds, Russ was guilty. But prominent defense attorney Joel J. Schwartz quickly recognized the real killer. The motive was clear. Days before her murder, the terminally ill Betsy replaced her husband with her friend, Pamela Hupp, as her life insurance beneficiary. Still, despite the prosecution's flimsy case and Hupp's transparent lies, Russ was convicted—leaving Hupp free to kill again. Bone Deep takes readers through the perfect storm of miscalculations and missteps that led to an innocent man's conviction—and recounts Schwartz's successful battle to have that conviction overturned. Written with Russ Faria's cooperation, and filled with chilling new revelations and previously undisclosed evidence, this is the story of what can happen when police, prosecutor, judge, and jury all fail in their duty to protect the innocent—and let a killer get away with murder.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

The Hupp Motor Company, a serious carmaker with a whimsical name, emerged from the ambition of Robert Craig Hupp. Born in Grand Rapids and raised in Detroit, Hupp's journey began at Olds Motor Works and continued at Ford Motor Company, where he honed his skills on the Model K.Leaving Ford in 1907, Hupp set out to create a lightweight car tailored for American roads. With funds from J. Walter Drake, Joseph R. Drake, and John E. Baker, the Hupp Motor Car Company was born in 1908. As capital dwindled, Charles D. Hastings stepped in to finance a prototype for the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.On a frigid night, snow drifting into their makeshift workspace, Hupp and Hastings feverishly completed their masterpiece: the two-seater Huppmobile Model 20. At its debut on February 15, 1909, the car garnered enough interest and $50 deposits to raise $25,000 and propel the company into production. From rented factories to larger facilities, production soared from 1,618 cars in 1909 to 12,543 by 1913. The Huppmobile's reputation for affordability and reliability led to its selection as Detroit's first police cars.A bold marketing stunt saw three men drive a Huppmobile around the world from November 10, 1910 to January 24, 1912. The 49,000-mile journey captured imaginations worldwide and solidified the Huppmobile as a global export. This heroic journey was covered in the book "Three Men in a Hupp: Around the World by Automobile, 1910-1912" by James A. Ward, link in the show notes. However, two critical factors hampered success. First, Hupp ceased production of their lightweight model; secondly, he sold his stock and left his company in September 1911 due to differing visions.Hupp started other car ventures without achieving similar success; most notably the Hupp Yates Electric Car Company with his brother Lewis. After legal disputes and rebranding to RCH Company, Hupp eventually joined Monarch Motor Car Company. By 1920, electric cars had lost popularity, and the RCH Hupp Yates was discontinued.Meanwhile, the Hupp Motor Car Company continued to expand its operations, creating a legacy that would endure for over three decades. The automaker's sales swelled like a tidal wave; from 15,000 units in 1921 to a staggering 65,000 by 1928. In a bid to capture the founder's magic, Hump Motor launched a cross-country odyssey on August 28, 1916. The Humpmobile Model N danced through all 48 state capitals, traversing 18,430 miles over four months.Robert Hupp's flame was extinguished on December 7, 1931, at age 55. Only to prove Bobby right, the company forged ahead into luxury, only to crumble under the weight of bankruptcy on November 1, 1940. Sales peaked in 1928 but quickly plummeted to around 17,500 in 1931.Resurrected as Hupp Incorporated in 1941, the company shifted its focus from cars to air conditioning and heating units. The old Hupp facility passed through various hands until it was demolished in '80-'81, giving way to General Motors' Poletown plant.www.nodrivinggloves.com"Three Men in a Hupp: Around the World by Automobile, 1910-1912" by James A. Many clinicians pride themselves on practicing within an evidence based framework; however, within psychology the influence of pseudoscience and pop psychology has been at times problematic and even harmful. Psychologist, professor & author, Dr. Hupp joins us to discuss his recently edited book Investigating Pop Psychology: Pseudoscience, Fringe Science & Controversies. In this conversation we cover: why Dr. Hupp wanted to put together this bookthe state of psychology & clinical psychology as a science considering recent challenges around the so-called replication crisisconsideration of potential factors that have contributed to the evolution of pseudoscience in psychology, including human factorsthe quality of the information landscape (news, social media, click bait) at the present time and how this might contribute to the propagation of pseudoscienceexploring the potential impact of "pop psychology" on the current research funding landscapewhen misinformation in the sphere of pop psychology goes from being light entertainment to being potentially harmfulfeatures of human psychology that make us predisposed to fall for pseudoscience, including confirmation biaswhat clinicians should keep in mind with respect to the critical consumption of informationdifferentiating between pseudoscience and when the scientific method is employed in more “fringe” areasadvice for those who want to study within a fringe areareadily recognizing false claims/charlatans/hidden agendas etc.Dr. Hupp's favourite examples from the book that illustrate the principles discussed balancing exploring novel areas of investigation that could yield fascinating results while remaining firmly grounded in scientific principles, critical thinking, testable hypotheses - when it might be worth taking “flyers” on strange or novel ideasStephen Hupp, PhD, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Gary Hupp is passionate about quite a few areas of life. We discussed an array of topics including his history in running machinery, working in the logging industry, and now helping with sales and deployment for Waldo Solutions, which describes themselves as "Intelligent Supply Chain Software For The Logging Industry". Gary is the type to get into different hobbies on an intense level and we explored where that comes from.
Pam Hupp is smarter than you. She's smarter than all of us. At least that's what she thinks in her mind. And she's used her genius to pull off a series of murders so perfect she outwitted the police at every turn. I assume that's what she tells herself as she tries to sleep in a cage each night since being sentenced to life in prison for one of the murders. The level of Pam's hubris is straight from a Shakespearian play. And we spend this week making fun of her. Today on Crime & Entertainment we take you on a unbelievable ride of murder, wrongful conviction & incarceration. Imagine walking in your home to find your wife lying dead, stabbed to death on the floor. The sight of that alone is enough to send someone over the edge but imagined being accused of doing such a heinous act. Thats exactly what happened to our guest today, Russ Faria. On December 27th, 2011, Russell Faria returned to his Troy, Missouri, home after his weekly game night with friends to an unthinkable, grisly scene: His wife, Betsy, lay dead, a knife still lodged in her neck. She'd been stabbed fifty-five times.First responders concluded that Betsy was dead for hours when Russ discovered her. This is the story of what can happen when police, prosecutor, judge, and jury all fail in their duty to protect the innocent—and let a killer get away with murder.Check out the detailed book on this case belowBone Deep: Untangling the Betsy Faria Murder Case: Bosworth Jr., Charles, Schwartz, Joel: 9780806541976: Amazon.com: BooksLinks to Crime & Entertainment Like us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/crimeandente...Follow us on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/crimenenter...Listen on Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/4T67Bs5...Listen on Apple Music - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Listen on Stitcher - https://www.stitcher.com/show/crime-e...Listen on Google
On December 27th, 2011 a 911 call is placed at 130 Sumac Drive in Troy Missouri that starts the domino effect of one of the strangest cases of murder and fraud I've ever heard. On a recommendation, I started watching The Thing About Pam on NBC starring Renee Zellwegger and couldn't get enough. Not many fraudsters are as bold and brazen as Pam, and I knew I had to learn as much as I could to find the answers... Pam was a normal housewife, she had a nice husband, and a job in the insurance industry. Everything about her was normal. Except, the dead body in her hallway. She had been ambushed in her own home and shot her attacker. When the police arrive they find the attacker had no ID, but a bizarre note in his pocket, it was detailed instructions on how to kidnap and murder Pam. “Make sure the knife is sticking out of her neck. Make it look like Russ's wife.” The police were shocked. Russ's wife had recently been murdered and the killer left a knife lodged in her neck. Was someone targeting the housewives of Missouri?
