Tim Tobin, CEO and Founder of Planatome, has a background in the semiconductor industry where precision polishing techniques were developed. Planatome has used that technology to create molecularly smooth scalpel blades that remove all the jagged edges on traditional surgical scalpels. These new nano polished blades significantly reduce scarring and inflammation from incisions and improve healing outcomes for patients, especially those with darker skin tones who are more prone to hypertrophic scarring. The challenge is disrupting an industry that has not changed in over 100 years and that has been driven by reducing the costs, not improving the blade. Tim explains, "So we picked the surgical scalpel because it's still the foundation, the primary incision tool, whether it's a minimally invasive procedure or a procedure with a lot of cutting. So we started with that. We've since applied our technology to many other surgical instruments. We started with the scalpel, which was patented in 1915. There's been no change, no technological change, just change to drag down the cost. So it's just completely commoditized, a scalpel blade somewhere in the 20 to 50 cent range, and nobody thinks about it because everybody just uses a scalpel, and they don't need to be more critical."  "So we started looking, and if you look at a scalpel blade underneath magnification, it looks almost like it's highly serrated and jagged because they're made by taking a piece of stainless steel, and they grind it up to a point, and that's the cutting edge. But they leave it like that." "We took that, and we said, okay, well, what if we polish it and take out all of those jagged serrations, at least a thousand times smoother. Now if you measure the surface, it changes the cutting mechanism from tearing and snagging to a nice clean incision. Nick Zabriskie, public policy manager at Uber, and Tim Tobin, partner at Hogan Lovells, discussed some of the major legal implications facing the deployment of autonomous vehicles, such as regulatory issues, implications for tort liability and potential effects on urban planning. Our guest today is Tim Tobin, Vice President of Franchisee Onboarding and Learning at Choice Hotels International.  He’s also the Dean of Choice University. He will talk to us about how learning processes have changed over time. Tim and Choice Hotels are well aware of the unique differential between learners. So, they have built a comprehensive approach in Choice University.  The approach is to meet each learner where they are. He found the biggest challenges are time and where to start. Their system incorporates those challenges and the solution is learning maps.  This gives people the opportunity to be given the first step to take and allows them to study what they don’t’ know and not have to spend the time with what they already know. Tim has learned about humility and that asking questions is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.  A great lesson for everyone. The tidal wave of environmental regulations that followed impacted every industry in the United States, especially the automotive market. Decades later, organizations have internalized these regulations into their culture. Today, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is driving a regulatory wave of similar scope, but now the need is to safeguard data against cyber attacks and privacy breaches. And once again, the automobile industry will feel the regulatory impact. Autonomous and connected cars are essentially “rolling smart devices,” and as they enter the mainstream in the EU and United States, automakers are increasingly reliant on data for safe, efficient vehicle operations. But security and privacy concerns and penalties for regulatory noncompliance demand that manufacturers review their policies — and perspectives — on data storage and use. Tim Tobin is entering his second year on the Tusculum College football coaching staff, a post he assumed in January 2012.  Coach Tobin mentored the Pioneer linebacker corps in 2012. Tobin will coach the TC defensive line and will also serve as the team's strength & conditioning coordinator.He coached All-South Atlantic Conference standout Brian Alexander in 2012 as he anchored a defense that finished 30th in the nation in fumble recoveries (13) and 43rd in turnovers gained (24).Tobin joined the TC staff following a six-year stint at nationally-ranked Kutztown University from 2006-11 where he coached the defensive line, kickers, while also serving as strength coach.
