Episode Notes Some analysts have argued that Choice Hotels International is too reliant on acquisitions to grow. But despite its ongoing push to acquire Wyndham, Choice believes the organic growth of its development pipeline is healthy, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill.  Choice CEO Patrick Pacious said during its earnings call on Tuesday that he's encouraged by the state of its pipeline. He noted that Choice averaged more than four openings per week through September. However, Joseph Greff, a J.P. Morgan analyst, said Choice Hotels' legacy room count has registered, at best, only modest footprint growth.  As for its third quarter performance, O'Neill writes Choice Hotels generated $92 million in net income. Next, Microsoft and travel technology company Amadeus are working together to develop artificial intelligence-related travel products. Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes highlights three of those innovations.  Cyril Tetaz, Amadeus' executive vice president of airline solutions, outlined what Microsoft and his company have in store in an interview with Skift. Their initiatives include personalized airline homepages for customers, a system for airline crew rescheduling, and a platform to simplify the work of an airline analyst.  Tetaz added that Amadeus has many other initiatives in the works with Microsoft.  Finally, luxury hospitality brand Inspirato is continuing to see losses mount. But the company believes it can become profitable by cutting costs, writes Short-Term Rental Reporter Srividya Kalyanaraman. Kalyanaraman reports Inspirato is burning cash at $15 million per quarter. It's also grappling with a decrease in revenue. But Chief Financial Officer Robert Kaiden said Inspirato will save $50 million by the end of first quarter next year by cutting costs. He noted that roughly $30 million of those savings are expected from pruning the portfolio and terminating leases.  Inspirato posted a net loss of $25 million in the third quarter. Its revenue also decreased 11% from last year.

Episode Notes A recent report in the Wall Street Journal said Choice Hotels International is considering buying Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. However, hotel industry analysts are skeptical, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. O'Neill writes a Choice Hotels-Wyndham merger could create the largest hotel franchisor in the U.S. But he cites two analysts who explained why it's unlikely to happen in a Truist Securities research report. Choice Hotels would have to add more budget properties to its portfolio, which might undermine its strategy of boosting its collection of high-end properties. In addition, a merger might face pushback from antitrust authorities. The two companies combined already have a more than 50 percent share of the U.S. economy hotel market.  Still, O'Neill adds that a merger might make sense in some ways. He notes that bigger is better is a general rule in hotel marketing, franchising and management.  Next, Short-Term Rental Reporter Srividya Kalyanaraman profiles a&o hostels, a Berlin-based company that has reused dirty, run down buildings as part of its quest for net zero carbon emissions.   A&o CEO Oliver Winter said the company, which aspires to be Europe's “zero-emissions hostel chain” by 2025, scours cities for dirty, ugly buildings that can be repurposed into hostels. Kalyanaraman writes that's a huge part of its net-zero goal since it allows the company to open a new property with a zero carbon footprint. Winter adds that a&o's strategy is appealing to Gen Z consumers increasingly looking for greener travel.  Winter also said that using refurbished buildings is substantially more economical for a&o considering the enormous costs it would face if it constructed new properties. Finally, the percentage of U.S. adults planning Memorial Day travel is set to jump from last year despite widespread concerns about inflation, reports Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden. A recent survey by travel news site The Vacationer found roughly 64 percent of American adults intend to travel during Memorial Day weekend, a nearly 5 percentage point jump from 2022. Eric Jones, co-founder of The Vacationer, said that increase indicates a strong summer for the travel industry.  However, Jones acknowledged that inflation could make travel during the upcoming holiday weekend difficult for some people. About 66 percent of respondents in The Vacationer's survey said inflation was affecting their Memorial Day travel plans. Jones added some people eager to travel will stay home because can't they afford the surging prices.

In Episode 87 we speak with Danny Guerrero,  Founder, The Culturist Group (TCG). His accomplishments are astounding and driving change. In this episode we hear Danny's meaningful travel stories from his first international trip to Korea, his experience interning for San Diego Tourism Board and the special trip to Paris with his mom. Also sharing about the work his doing now and how it all began.   It was Danny's connection and commitment to local communities throughout his twenty plus years in travel marketing that inspired him to launch his own company, The Culturist Group (TCG). TCG is  a 100% minority-owned travel marketing company. As a thought leader for multicultural and diversity in travel Danny has been an active proponent of culture-forward thinking for travel brands and destinations as a means to help increase equity and inclusion in the travel industry. TCG was established at a time when shifting cultural identities and the need for more diversity, equity and inclusion in the travel industry finally became a priority. TCG believes that the travel industry and the brands, and destinations that participate in it can be a force for good. CULTURIST as a concept and consultancy practice, bridges cultural values with multicultural travel strategies to support clients to sustain better connections who consider where and with whom they travel as an extension of who they are. As social justice and diversity in travel became transparent during the uprising of Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, many travel brands struggled to find ways to bridge and connect with multicultural and underrepresented markets. Beginning in 2018 Danny forward thinking advocated for and led the delivery of key programs for destinations and far-reaching industry research on emerging and underrepresented travelers.  Danny championed industry-wide groundbreaking research supporting prolific travel brands such as Hilton, Choice Hotels International, Tripadvisor, NYC & Company, Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board on Black and Hispanic travelers, revealing these two segments alone representing nearly 30% of all U.S. travel spend, reaching in excess of $280M annually. His work has led to the bestowing of grants and funds to Black and diversity in travel organizations in excess of $100,000 to empower underrepresented voices in the travel marketing. He has been at the helm of multiple award-winning brand marketing and communications programs for destinations, hospitality and travel brands on nearly every continent. Prior to founding The Culturist Group, he spent a decade of his career building and leading agency teams at two well-respected firms, MMGY Global and DCI.  Prior to spent a decade in destination marketing with in house roles for hotel management and tour operators. His career portfolio includes research and public relations leadership for Visit California, Viceroy Hotel Group, Hilton, Sensei Retreats, Fiji Airways, Tourism Chile, The Travel Corporation, Visit West Hollywood, Los Cabos Tourism, Sonoma County Tourism, Destination Cleveland to name a few.   Danny is a frequent guest speaker at travel and tourism conferences advocating for underrepresented travelers and illuminating how shifting demographics, travel sentiment and culture represent opportunities for the travel industry. Dedicated to advocating underrepresented travelers and promoting travel for diverse youth and volunteers with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, INROADS (and Mrs. Obando's 8th grade class).  Danny graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and Marketing from the University of California, Riverside with Chancellor's Honors. He is an Executive MBA Candidate at the UCLA Anderson School of Management (Class of 2024), where he was awarded a Dean's Fellowship. Early in his career Danny served as an intern for President Bill Clinton serving in the White House Visitors Office and was a career intern at the San Diego Tourism Authority.  He is a recipient of the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award' granted by the World Travel and Tourism Council for his work advancing diversity and equity in the industry in 2021, and the Chairman's Award granted by the National Association of Black Meeting Professionals. Danny and his husband Jaime reside in Los Angeles, California.

Currently, the city has 11 newspapers, four broadcast TV news operations and a full-time news/talk radio outlet. E&P's May 2022 cover story features an extensive piece from Contributing Editor Gretchen A. Extended Stay America lost money in the second quarter of this year, but in the COVID-19 age the company found reasons to celebrate. It was able to keep its 636 hotels open since the pandemic struck in mid-March. It furloughed few of its 8,000 employees. And, at the end of June, its hotels had an average across-the-board occupancy of 80 percent, up from a low of 50 percent in mid-April. The story is not Extended Stay America's alone. The U.S. extended-stay hotel sector has proven to be the most resilient of the lodging segments amid the coronavirus crisis – especially those in the economy and mid-price tiers. In this episode of Lodging Leaders podcast, we explore how extended-stay hotels have fared better than their transient cousins during the coronavirus crisis and what the future holds for the sector. The coronavirus pandemic and the resulting downturn in the travel industry will make it difficult for investors to find the capital they need to acquire and develop hotels. That means minority investors, in particular Black Americans, might face an uphill climb in qualifying for bank loans unless they can close the ever-widening equity gap. Several industry groups, including owners, are looking post-pandemic and reviving efforts to partner with Black investors in hotel development, including partially financing new projects. Industry leaders also want to educate minority owners of other commercial real estate assets how to reap financial returns through investment in hotels. Last week, Lodging Leaders reported on Black hoteliers introducing boutique concepts that celebrate Black heritage and culture. This week, we explore the state of Black hotel investment and how the coronavirus pandemic has strengthened industry leaders' resolve to invite more minority investment into hospitality. Fair franchising. It's a phrase that's been used countless times in negotiations with brands, at industry conferences and among associations formed to ensure a balance of power between franchisers and franchisees. As the hotel industry in the U.S. celebrates nearly a decade of growth, leaner times are ahead, say forecasters. Owner operators are cutting as many expenses as they can but seem to be swimming upstream as costs are claiming more and more of their bottom lines. Among the biggest expenses are franchisee fees, which are growing at a faster pace than room revenue. Episode 253 of Lodging Leaders is the first in a series that's exploring the issues brewing in the franchise industry. To launch the series, Judy Maxwell, co-host of Lodging Leaders, attended Fair Franchising Initiative, a new organization formed to address hotel franchisees' concerns with the current state of franchising. Mike Parent: Sure. Well, I've been in the industry for many years. I started as a desk clerk at a hotel in Washington DC. I took a summer job while I was in college pursuing my degree in radio/TV broadcasting. For the first five years of my hotel career I worked mostly in operations. I was a desk clerk, I was a night auditor, I did maintenance during the winter, I was assistant manager of a hotel, but I was eventually exposed to hotel sales when I worked for a larger hotel and I saw what they were doing in sales and that really got my interest. So my first sales gig was for a new hotel that was opening near the Watergate in Washington DC called Guest Quarters. That brand is now evolved into the Doubletree brand, which is part of the Hilton family. But since Guest Quarters my hotel sales journey as you call it, has taken me through many major branded and independent hotels, several management companies and two senior level positions at major brands. I was Director of Sales and Marketing for Taj Hotels of India when they had six hotels in Washington DC and I was also Vice President of new hotels sales support at Choice Hotels International. Ryan Embree: That's awesome. So again, quite the plethora of knowledge and experience there. I find it such a common trend that a lot of people in the industry, you know, just got started as a, you know, front desk clerk, you know,

Our guest today is Tim Tobin, Vice President of Franchisee Onboarding and Learning at Choice Hotels International.  He’s also the Dean of Choice University. He will talk to us about how learning processes have changed over time. Tim and Choice Hotels are well aware of the unique differential between learners. So, they have built a comprehensive approach in Choice University.  The approach is to meet each learner where they are. He found the biggest challenges are time and where to start. Their system incorporates those challenges and the solution is learning maps.  This gives people the opportunity to be given the first step to take and allows them to study what they don’t’ know and not have to spend the time with what they already know. Tim has learned about humility and that asking questions is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.  A great lesson for everyone.
