Here's Kevin's article...Stockpiling foods that can last for weeks or years is not just a smart way of beating rising food costs. It can also help you save money and be prepared for emergencies.In the event of a long power outage, having even a small supply of long-shelf life foods, such as dry goods, canned goods and freeze-dried foods, can make a big difference. You'll also be grateful to have a little extra food at home when you get sick and can't go out to buy groceries. Because of inflation and rising food prices, keeping shelf-stable foods is a good investment.Tips for stocking up on foodRemember to stock up on foods that you actually eat or drink. Don't stockpile foods that you or your family members are allergic to or won't touch.When buying groceries, you should also know the exact quantity of food your family consumes on a regular basis; buy some extra. (Related: 10 Tips for stockpiling food.)Foods from a supermarket or grocery all have an expiration date, which indicates when a food product will start to taste bad. However, some food products are still safe to eat well past their expiration date.To determine if you should get rid of an expired food item or not, look for signs that the food has gone bad. Bloated or leaking cans, signs of mold or insect damage and a foul odor are just some warning signs that a product is no longer safe for consumption.You should also stock up on ingredients that you often use in your recipes, like herbs and spices and canned sauces. If your family likes to drink tea or coffee, stock up on them as well.Pay attention to the foods you want to stockpile and learn to experiment in the kitchen. Before buying plenty, try cooking with a certain food or product to make sure that you really like its taste and you'll consume it.Dry goods like salt, sugar, grains, flour, rice and dried beans can be stored at room temperature. Remember that dry goods are historically crucial food supplies that you need to store in bulk for months or years. To prolong their shelf life, you can store them in Mylar bags or other airtight containers.Ways to extend the shelf life of foodsThere are many ways to extend the shelf life of foods in your stockpile. Here are some tips to follow:Store food in a cool, dry place. Be mindful of the temperature; some foods are fine with room temperature while others prefer freezing temperatures.Check the humidity in your storage area. Wheat, flour and other dry goods should be stored in a place with little to no moisture in the air. Fresh foods like fruits and vegetables require a specific humidity level to extend the time they can be in storage.Fats react with oxygen and easily go rancid, so choose foods with low fat content. We're back today with internationally-known archaeologist, primitive technologist, and chef, Bill Schindler. Bill's been on the show once before to discuss his book, Eat Like A Human, and he's back today to talk about the human diet, through the lens of his professional focus of ancestral human foods, food acquisition, and the traditional processing techniques we once used to make our food edible or more nutritious. After our recent episode with Sally Norton, which was episode #142 “Are Oxalates Destroying Your Health” — where we discuss oxalic acid and other oxalates in our food supply — Daniel wanted to get another opinion. We didn't tell Bill beforehand that we wanted to discuss this, as we wanted his honest and unbiased take on the subject. But, as it turns out he's been keenly interested in this topic for some time and has been actively cutting oxalates out of his own diet — with some pretty profound results. So, while Bill and Daniel discuss fad diets in general today, they really take their time exploring the issue of dietary oxalates, since — if they are as deleterious to our health as some allege — the ramifications are significant and affect most of us. So this is a continuation of a conversation we began with Sally Norton, and it's something Daniel would like to continue exploring over time, at least until he feels like he's gotten a pretty good handle on it. For now, he remains undecided. Not a total skeptic, but he's not drinking the kool-aid either. That said, he's been experimenting with his own diet a bit, by gently but consistently removing some of the highest oxalate foods he's been eating, which you'll also hear him discuss here today. He's not going all in, since he still has some doubts, and because he's grown progressively more allergic to dietary restrictions as he's matured, but he has noticed some anecdotal improvements in his own subjective experience. So for now, he'll keep pursuing it. In closing, Daniel got interested in wild foods — and in particular — hunting, fishing, and foraging — because he's interested in human diet and nutrition. Sometimes in the world of wild foods we get more focused on what we can eat rather than what we should eat. We don't mean that ideologically, but rather nutritionally. So, from time to time, we think conversations like this are helpful, because they remind us of why and how we got here: wanting to be our best and healthiest selves. What the heck is going on at Laird Superfood (NYSE: LSF)? At one point in February 2021, the company had a market capitalization of almost a half a billion dollars but is now getting takeover offers at 95% less. At it's core, Laird Superfood is still perfectly positioned inside the CPG triangle of better for you, plant-based, and functional. That being said, category competitiveness was always going to catch up to Laird Superfood. Along with the absurdly poor stock performance, Laird Superfood has had its share of business struggles that start and end with a cost structure that needs drastic improvement. With new CEO Jason Vieth leading Laird Superfood in 2022, you can start to see some signs of positive change. Because of that (and it being a lowball offer), Laird Superfood cannot and should not take the unsolicited offer from EF Hutton. I do though think Laird Superfood would be better off transforming its business to achieve its long-term goals outside of the unforgiving spotlight of Wall Street. That leaves Laird Superfood with maybe the following path…they could go back to EF Hutton to negotiate a higher price, but at the end of the day, EF Hutton just wants to value hunt, improve fundamentals, and then flip it to a big CPG portfolio. So, why would Laird Superfood do that when they already have a Big CPG portfolio as one of its biggest investors? Is it finally time for Danone to acquire Laird Superfood?
