1. The major stock indexes are pulling back today. This dip comes as the markets got a little overbought on the daily chart. yesterday, Either way, this is a 'Whipsaw Wednesday' which is usually the most choppy session before an options expiration. Often, rallies will be sold and sell-off will see sharp bounces. As I always say, trade only the best chart pattern setups. 2. Target is getting slammed today after reporting earnings. The stock is trading lower by $14.6% to $152.77 a share. This comes as the company reported a slowdown in discretionary spending. The strange thing is that WalMart recently reported strong earnings and a strong outlook. Either way, I think Target will trade lower based on the pattern and move down to the $125 area is likely. 3.Gold is stalling out today. The precious metal has had a great rally recently and if it can consolidate here it can make another move higher.  4. The crypto saga continues with more exchanges going under. The FTX collapse is far from over and looks to be systemic to other crypto firms. Remember the old coach roach theory, if there is 1 there is 1 million. You know I'm looking for Bitcoin to trade below 12K before finding a bottom and that looks to be underway. Today Bitcoin is trading around 16,500.

The initial idea was to create a cash alternative to pay each other with digital money without the need for a bank. From day one the supply was set to be a finite number of 21 million bitcoins. Because of that scarcity it is often compared to gold. Bitcoin attracted the crypto-curious investor as a store of value and because its digital nature it can only be stored digitally. Bitcoin is volatile and the idea to use it as cash failed. Similar to gold, people buy Bitcoin “not because they expect to be able to go to the store and spend it, but because they expect it to hold its value". Today Bitcoin shed 28% of its value...that is a lot of volatility! But in any market you need it to be a two-sided market; so this kind of adjustment is somewhat expected...albeit 28% is a big adjustment. When I saw this it prompted me to talk about the ability to handle a loss. My comments are targeted to markets with liquidity where there is some level of confidence you can exit the market with little slippage. Years ago I read a book from a trader who said that the common thread he had seen of those who could not invest well or trade, was the inability to take a loss. At first that seemed counter intuitive. As I studied it further, and then applied it myself, I learned that he was right. The ability to properly handle losses is one of the most necessary skills needed. There is a fundamental human element that is at play here...and that is the need to be right. In fact, we work hard as humans to be right; we will try all sorts of tactics. Investing and trading requires you to address this human element directly and to force you to take a loss. Ironically, the inability to take a loss typically means that bad habits are formed and then the loss someone actually takes is much larger than actually would have occurred if a decent stop management level was put in place initially. Some psychologists suggest that this is the key to investing and trading...developing the mental mindset to break the need to be right and establish the discipline to do what is best for you. The best thing for you in some cases is to take a loss. Don't forget, this is always about protecting your capital first, followed by making a profit second. Doing the right thing for you is not always about taking a profit. In many cases doing the right thing for you is to take a controlled, measured loss. One of the most critical aspects of investing and trading is to define your stops. This reflects the level of risk you are willing to adopt. To do otherwise is to treat this as a gambling exercise; which is not what we are interested in. Having a stop loss means that there is some trust in the trading system and the criteria you are using for entry. In fact, it is a best practice to define the stop location first and then the entry. Many times we don't do that, rather we focus on entering the market NOW and then determining the stop location after that. There are multiple techniques for defining a stop. 1- Some kind of reference line; like a support or resistance 2- A recent pivot location 3- Some indicator such as a moving average line If you don't have a stop management strategy then spend the time to get one now before you enter your next investment or trading position.
