Interview by Kris PetersSwedish progressive power metal outfit Evergrey have had a long and distinguished career, chalking up 13 albums in their three-decade existence, in the process redefining the acceptable parameters for Swedish metal.Led since 1993 by guitarist/vocalist Tom S Englund, Evergrey have maintained their dark approach to a generally bright form of metal, spreading their musical wings further with each new release.Evergrey will release their 14th studio album Theories Of Emptiness on June 7, with keyboard player Rikard Zander spending time with HEAVY to discuss the new material. We start by asking if, after 13 previous album releases, the impending release of another is still a nerve-wracking process."Yeah, I've been there, done that," he shrugged, "but we still put so much effort into every album we do. We always try to do our best, and we always try to top the previous albums. So, of course, we are very anxious to see how it's going to be received. We're always a little bit nervous of course, because we've been in the process for such a long time so we really don't know… we don't have an objective side of it yet, so it feels good when you start to get some good reviews and hear people liking it (laughs).""We always try to find new angles for every release. I mean, we're not going to change completely. We still have a way, and we're going to put out great music, but we try to find a new way of writing, maybe just to try to keep it fresh. And I think the new angle on this album is mostly that Johan, our bass player, has written a lot of music, and he hasn't done that before."In the full interview, Rikard discussed Evergrey's new album Theories of Emptiness, highlighting the band's approach to creating fresh music and the influence of different band members on the album's sound. He also expressed surprise at early reviews calling it their best album ever, emphasizing the band's ongoing efforts to deliver high-quality music despite releasing numerous albums. He engaged in a detailed discussion about the album, covering various aspects such as the song titles, guest vocals, and the introduction of new elements, particularly the contribution of bass player Johan in songwriting. Rikard also provided insights into the band's upcoming world tour plans, including gigs in South America, European festivals, a Scandinavian tour, and a European tour in the fall.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersThe pairing of Evergrey's Tom. S. Englund and acclaimed US-based pianist/composer Vikram Shankar (Redemption, Lux Terminus) might at first seem like a strange combination, but once you have taken the time to digest the sheer beauty that is the music of Silent Skies things fall easily into perspective.Over the course of two previous albums Silent Skies have set about dismantling convention and expectation by painting sonically rich landscapes of musical clarity that resonate long after each listen. The band returned earlier this week with their third album Dormant, an album which shows yet another metamorphosis of their combined vision.Shankar and Englund both spoke with HEAVY on the eve of the release of Dormant."We think that it's our best statement yet," Shanker obliged, "and a level up pretty much in all of the ways that characterize what we do.""We spent, honestly, an unhealthy amount of time on this album," Englund added. "We've been into every detail, because that's something we really enjoy doing. Now it's time to leave it for the world to enjoy instead of us having to be in it and fiddle around with stuff that we no longer can affect. Hopefully people enjoy it. Honestly, we are super, super happy with what we have accomplished on this album."In the full interview, we discuss Dormant musically, the singles released and how they represent the album as a whole, new elements on the album and ways they approached recording, the cinematic aspect to their music, how Dormant differs to the first two albums, how much musical growth Silent Skies have left in them, more about Vikram and his musical pedigree, why they started the band, future plans and more.

The music of Silent Skies, the collaborative project between Tom S. Englund, vocalist of Swedish progressive group Evergrey, and virtuoso classical pianist Vikram Shankar, feels at once lushly cinematic, warmly intimate, darkly melancholic and incandescently beautiful. It’s making is a story of a deep musical kinship between two seemingly divergent talents. The pair first crossed paths when the Swedish singer saw American Oberlin film score graduate Shankar’s engrossingly sensitive piano interpretation of Evergrey’s Distance on YouTube: “I heard an instant musicality coming from him” Englund says: “he can take one chord and add one melody note and immediately you understand he has this deep musical knowledge.” He sensed in Shankar a kindred musical spirit who could help him channel new forms of musical expression. A series of email exchanges between the pair gave birth to ideas of a sonic landscape rooted in cinematic score music - what they both came to see as ‘films for the inner eye’. As they began playing together it quickly became apparent that they shared profound musical common ground. Evergrey’s music had been a founding influence on the pianist after all: “They had a huge impact on the way my playing developed.” Shankar says: “Their musical and emotional language remains a critical component to the way I write and play music. Tom's singing in particular has been very influential - my favourite way to play melodically is to emulate and channel the emotional impact of the human voice, and his has an impact unlike any other.” “I think part of the magic of Silent Skies is that we come from fairly different backgrounds, and do not have identical musical personalities” Shankar adds: “but we have certain shared musical, aesthetic, and emotional values that make the art we make together really click. There were countless times while working together where we both know exactly where we needed to go.” The recording sessions produced a series of dark, grandly melancholic pieces built around a strong melodic sensibility. Shankar’s tender and emotive piano playing drives the music, with Englund's unique and charismatic vocals adding extra depth, drama and melodic sensibility. Lushly dramatic tracks like Horizons and Endless pair hauntingly filmic classical music with a Scandinavian sense of melancholy and melody. It's a potent combination which opens up little-explored musical paths. Alongside a brilliant series of original compositions, a cover of Eurythmics’ 1983 hit Here Comes The Rain Again offers up a further example of strong melodies transcending stylistic boundaries. “That song influenced my writing.” Englund says “It speaks my language in terms of melody. So to bring that back into my life and also discover that it had a major part of my musical upbringing was great. And we made it our own. I’m really happy with the version.” Despite being based principally on just piano and voice, there’s a sense of grandiosity to the compositions, yet they also feel intensely personal and intimate. “I think when you write from the heart and don’t care about anything else but liking music, then what comes out comes out” Englund says. “We didn’t have any image set or felt that we wanted to present ourselves in a certain way. Recording on a grand piano you want to have the sound of wood snapping and crackling and the sound of feet being put down. I think it makes it really organic and honest. It makes you feel like you’re in the room. But then when you add all of these atmospheric elements, it becomes something I haven’t heard before.” Complementing the music’s melancholic sounds are lyrics marked by self-reflection and existential contemplation: “I was not in a place in my life where I wanted to be.” Englund says. “They reflect a transition period... it’s all those thoughts fragmented and also well thought out ideas of what I wanted to do and needed to do. But also in retrospect of where I am now”. While the Silent Skies album presents a vivid demonstration of the pair’s musical ideas and simpatico musicianship it’s far from the end of their artistic partnership. “I think we have two more albums worth already” says Englund, concluding: “For me personally I feel Silent Skies shows a different side of myself. It’s tilting the camera another way into another perspective. And I think this music fills a gap that isn’t there, that combination of score music with vocals.”
REDEMPTION is one of the leading progressive metal bands in the world today. Formed in Los Angeles, California in 2000 by guitarist / keyboardist / songwriter Nicolas van Dyk, the band features iconic vocalist Tom S. Englund of Evergrey, the phenomenal rhythm section of Chris Quirarte (drums) and Sean Andrews (bass), keyboard phenom Vikram Shankar, and additional guitar work from the legendary Chris Poland (Megadeth, OHM) and Simone Mularoni (DGM). First gaining notoriety with their sophomore release, 2005’s 'The Fullness Of Time' (which featured former vocalist Ray Alder of Fates Warning), the band released their third CD, 'The Origins Of Ruin', in 2007 and followed with a tour of North America in support of progressive metal icons Dream Theater. They followed this up with a live CD/DVD of their performance at the ProgPower USA festival, 'Frozen In The Moment', in 2008. In 2009 they released 'Snowfall On Judgment Day' (which included a guest vocal performance from James LaBrie of Dream Theater), followed by 2011’s 'This Mortal Coil', after which they toured Europe for the first time and released their second live CD/DVD, 'Live From The Pit', in 2013. 2016 saw REDEMPTION deliver 'The Art Of Loss', which features not only Simone Mularoni and Chris Poland but also guitarists Marty Friedman and Chris Broderick, as well as guest performance from John Bush of Armored Saint/ex-Anthrax. Following the departure of Alder in early 2017, the band joined forces with the formidable voice of Tom S. Englund, and released its seventh studio CD, 'Long Night’s Journey Into Day', in 2018, again with Poland and Mularoni. Later that same year, the band - with live guest appearances by Mularoni, Poland and Ray Alder - headlined the 2018 edition of the ProgPower USA festival, recording the performance with multiple cameras under the direction of Patric Ullaeus (known for his videos for Evergrey, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amaranthe and others). With REDEMPTION newly signed to AFM Records, the live package is being released as 'Alive In Color', as BluRay/2-CD and DVD/2-CD sets (both including Redemption’s live performance of the Megadeth classic 'Peace Sells' featuring Poland, believed to be the first time he performed that on stage in over 20 years). Soon thereafter, REDEMPTION will return to the studio to begin work on its 8th studio CD, which will come from AFM sometime in 2021.
