This week in The Immortals slot, tracks over seven minutes long that really showcase what a band can do but seldom gets airplay. This week we gave Guns ‘n' Roses the slot. They have so many that qualify, e.g. November Rain and Estranged but we took a listen to Civil War. The Diabolical Challenge focused on 2010. We said a sad farewell to Rodriguez who passed away this week at 81. Rodriguez is a legend to many of us who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Meet Mike and Samantha, they contacted The Penis Project as they were keen to share their story, which is one of love, connection and romance. Samantha and Mike had been married for 45 years. And through it all, have enjoyed a very healthy and active sex life. This halted when they both got diagnosed with cancer - endometrial for Samantha and prostate for Mike. Mike was very open with his doctor about the importance of his sexual function after treatment. His doctor understood his predicament and offered nerve-sparing surgery. Like most men, Mike had problems with incontinence after surgery which affected his sexual function amongst other things, and this caused him to feel depressed. Thankfully, with help from his healthcare team, Samantha and himself, he was able to overcome it. Now, less than a year post-op, Mike advocates the use of pumps, injections, and exploring things to make your sex life better. Samantha also shares the importance of finding all the information available to aid recovery. Be your own advocate is her motto. The same with all the others who we had in the podcast - Mike and Samantha encourage anyone to have yourself checked. Just get checked. And lastly, Mike and Samantha's advice to others is this: 'To just refuse to grow up'. When they go out on dates, they always sit on same side of the dinner booth.... they're always holding hands when out... always have an arm around each other at the theater...etc., and people ask from time to time why they're so happy together after 46 years of being together.... and her comment to those folks are that "we have refused to grow up"! And they make it a point after love making sessions to look at each other and ask cheerfully "what's wrong with us at 65 & 70 yrs old"? And their answer is always the same to others as well as themselves...."we just refuse to grow up"!! Episode 49 of Season 5 aired on 8 December 2022 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio. It began with the very track that started me on this 40-plus-year journey down Rock and Roll Road i.e. ‘Detroit Rock City', the opening track from Kiss's Destroyer. That album changed my life, and may have changed yours too. If you get yourself a copy of The Story of Rock and Roll you may find some parallels. From Kiss, we went to The Clash and the title track of the London Calling album. Next, we got a deluge of guitar from Jake E. Lee and Ivan Ivankovic. Ivan on a track called 'World in Fear' and Jake with Badlands back in 1984. Randy Rhoads would have turned 66 this week so we wished him happy birthday in heaven and then checked out his more than able replacement Zakk Wylde in his band Black Label Society and a track called Lovin' Woman' off the Unblackened album. We checked out The Raven Age and a track called 'The Death March' and that fitted well with yet another track of the latest Queensrÿche album Digital Noise Alliance. We had some Lynyrd Skynyrd with ‘Call me The Breeze' and then another bit of classic rock in the form of 'Call On Me' from Bad Company. Now if you are listening internationally then I am sorry I bang on about the state of South Africa as much as I do, it is a tragedy we are living through, a government that has betrayed the electorate and stolen all the money by looting and collapsing all the State-owned enterprises. We are on the cusp of a complete blackout with load shedding around 8 hours a day. It was therefore politically correct to bitch about it and play The Damned's ‘Wait For The Blackout, followed by Sex Pistols and 'EMI'. If you substitute ANC for EMI you get the picture. From there it was time for some upliftment and that came in the form of Van Halen with 'Dreams', The Gaslight anthem with 'Stay Lucky', and Sixx A.M. with ‘High On The Music'. We will get through this and the music helps. The downhill run included some grungy stuff from Audioslave, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. It was post-Layne Staley Alice in Chains I might add, William Duvall is doing a great job in AIC. Next up, classics from ACDC and Black Sabbath, and then some Halestorm with a cover of Sophie B. Hawkins's 'Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover'. We took a listen to a lot of brilliant stuff that is new to me, St Aurora out of Finland, Girish and the Chronicles out of India, and Risingfall out of Japan. Thanks to the wifi situation with a lot of the cell towers in the country rendered useless because the batteries have been stolen, I lost a lot of listeners, apologies to all who were frustrated with the signal dropping. The end of the show turned into a beautiful Metal Festival featuring, Sword, Motörhead, Pantera, Bewitcher, and Arch Enemy. We ended off with Claymorean, a metal band out of Lazarevac, a small mining town in Serbia. Claymorean are one of the best bands I have discovered this year. Episode 12 of Season 5 aired on 24 Mar 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio. The show kicked off with Saxon and a track off their latest album Carpe Diem called 'All For One'. Next up Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown with a most excellent track called 'Without You'. Tyler was widely hailed pre-Covid as the next big thing and there is no doubt he's got a lot to offer, awesome guitarist, great voice, and rock star looks. We took another track off the new Tony Martin album Thorns. It is a great album, well worth checking out. We spent some time with the classics, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns 'n' Roses, and then checked out a Southern Rock band out of Bristol UK called Sons of Liberty. I thought they were new kids on the block but Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth fame is in the band so I need to find out what, what before the next show.Punk from Sex Pistols and Ramones with 'Pretty Vacant' and 'I Can't Give You Anything', we followed up with a bit of Oasis and then got back into the metal with Megadeth and Metallica. New stuff came from Eddie Vedder and a track called 'The Dark' off Earthling and 'Kick' a new track from Def Leppard. This led to a brief discussion about Vivian Campbell and an example played from his side project Last In Line. I had the new Rammstein and didn't get a chance to play it. I think I need a bit more time on it. The New Kid Rock 'Still Somethin' off Bad Reputation is wonderful and a highlight of the show.SA music came from The Black Cat Bones, Springbok Nude Girls and Falling Mirror with a track called '(Time) Is a Thief. I played 'Smoke On The Water'! I shy away from these super rock classics like Stairway and Bohemian Rhapsody because they have just been so overdone but the classic Made In Japan album version bought back some good memories. We got heavy with Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Slipknot, and Sepultura before wrapping it up in a mellow way with Tom Keifer, Neil Young and Tom Waits with 'Jesus Gonna Be Hear Soon'. Episode 6 of season 5 aired on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 10 Feb 2022. It started off in an uncharacteristically chilled way with Cinderella and a track called 'One For Rock and Roll' off Heartbreak Station. From there it got a bit heavier and a lot more uptempo with Adrenaline Mob, featuring the phenomenal fretwork of Mike Orlando and then a track called 'Premonition' by Running Wild. The track was released in 2013 and makes a passing reference to the end of days and "unknown virus". Rocking Rolf probably feels pretty smug about that. From there we bounced around between poppy-type Night Ranger tracks and way more metallic stuff from Bewitcher off Cursed be thy Kingdom. I was told that it was once again time for the SONA, where the President takes a huge hit on the crack pipe and takes those who are interested on a fantastical journey of lies, fabrications, and pipe dreams. Once I became aware of this a theme of sarcastic chirps permeated the show. Cheap shots aplenty were taken when we listened to Keel - 'Die Fighting', The Clash - 'Police and Thieves, Stiff Little Finger - Fly the Flag, and We Are Augustines - Into the Abyss. Evanescence made their TSORR debut with 'Call Me When You're Sober and we added to that with some Halestorm and a track called 'I Am the Fire'. My favorite stretch of the show was Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden & Judas Priest. It went down well proving once again why the world's biggest bands are the world's biggest bands. We wound down with David Bowie, Iggy & the Stooges, and The Rolling Stones before we checked out with parkway Drive and Venom. I played Skid Row's 'This is Killing Me' just to mark the South African situation and express my feelings about it, the song is truly amazing and gets me every time. We closed out with Kobus! and 'Volk Van Main' dedicated to all of you amazing people who support TSORR, I am deeply grateful to you all. Episode 3 of Season 5 aired at 19h00 on 20 Jan 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio. We started with a nice little instrumental before diving into the strange waters of Legend of the Seagullmen and their song ' Rise of the Giant'. Following that we went back to 1989 and took a track off Badlands, a fantastic album released in 1987 by the band of the same name. That album was the first CD I ever bought, it is a seriously good album and belongs in every rock fans collection. This episode contained a higher percentage of the lesser-known bands than normal, I think it worked out pretty well. We took a heavy dose of what I would call Classic UK Punk; The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, and Sex Pistols. It is interesting to reflect on just how things have changed. In the sanitised world of 2022these songs are even more incendiary than they were in 1977. Or, am I just getting old? The early stuff was covered by Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull, The newer stuff by Ayron Jones and Me and That Man. The heavy came from Venom and Architects. We raised the issue of Valiant Swart's fundraiser and efforts to raise some cash so that his wife Lanelle can get treatment for a seriously debilitating condition that will need some support to sort out. TSORR wishes Valiant well in this effort and supports the initiative. As usual, we ran out of time just as we really got going and Neil Young closed the show with a track called 'Canerican' of his new album Barn. Welcome to 2022 and Season 5 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show. Episode 1 kicked off the season live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 6 Jan 2022. We launched with Prince and the Revolution and 'Let's Go Crazy' off the multi-platinum era defining Purple Rain album. Then it was time for a bit of positivity with Lit and 'Lovely Day' and we rocked on from there. I corrected the omission of Dee Sniders 2021 release Leave a Scar on last week's Best of 2021 show. We hit the '70s with Deep Purple and Nazareth and then got heavy with Bewitcher. They released another album I missed last year called Cursed Be Your Kingdom and it's excellent, we checked out 'Valley of the Ravens'. There was some slower bluesy stuff from Billy F. Gibbons and Gov't Mule and an opportunity to slip in some Slipknot which went down really well. It was a pretty mixed up show going from Joe Jackson and The Jesus & Mary Chain to In This Moment and Rammstein and then Hinder and Nickelback. TSORR once again going where angels fear to tread. The highlight for me was getting to play all 7 min of the title track of the Deangersmith Album Lead us to your Taker (Disable the Corrupt). This album was released by Dean Smith, ex- Ragnarok, and Mouthful of Flies last year. Dean played every instrument, did all the vocals and all the programming. It deals with societal issues and it's a seriously good album. So all in all a bit of a mongrel of a show and you will hopefully find something to get your teeth into. He spoke about his guitar lessons from a glam rock musician that was offered at the guitar center. We looked into what changed with his band having new drummer Aris Wales being involved with the band and how the band became a bit more tight. For the new album he used the Motorhead’s sound guy Cameron Webb to mix the album. The video for Valley of the Ravens was went over along with the songwriting. Around the RAM offices we're still strong supporters of underground record labels. Modern technology has decimated the industry but they still play a huge role in the careers of your fave artists. While some of the bigger labels get the lion's share of fans attention and finances, there's a strong contingency of smaller labels plying their trade. Smaller only in size and stature, not creativity or spirit. This week we want give the Horns to those labels flogging to out in the underground basement. A good place to start is with Argonauta Records recording artist Hey Zeus. These Boston stoner rockers are a prime example of indieriffic rock n roll. We caught up with the band as they were about to hit the stage in their hometown.
