Wait, isn't it a non metal month? And don't we usually listen to Dream Theater in the Summer? Yes and yes. But how can you say no to a fresh off the presses album from DT?! This week, we listen to the excellent Parasomnia!
Dream Theater fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Parasomnia, the progressive metal icons' latest full-length album, and now that it's here, it's proving to be one of their most compelling releases in years. With the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy and a fresh creative energy flowing through the band, Parasomnia not only marks a reunion but also signals an exciting new chapter in Dream Theater's storied career. On this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, host Scott Penfold sits down with Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie for an in-depth conversation about the making of Parasomnia, the themes behind its haunting and immersive sound, and what it was like having Portnoy back behind the kit after nearly a decade and a half. A Return to Familiar Ground with a Fresh Perspective Parasomnia, which arrived on February 7, 2025, via InsideOut Music, is the band's first release with Portnoy since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The album, produced by guitarist John Petrucci and mixed by Andy Sneap, explores eerie and unsettling dream states, weaving together complex rhythms, intricate melodies, and soaring vocals. From the opening moments of In The Arms of Morpheus to the epic closer The Shadow Man Incident, the record is a journey through subconscious fears, sleep paralysis, and the bizarre world of dreams. Tracks like A Broken Man, Dead Asleep, Midnight Messiah, and Bend The Clock further build upon these themes, making for an album that's as cinematic as it is musically intricate. The first single, Night Terror, is a nearly ten-minute thrill ride that perfectly captures the essence of the record's dark undertones. Mike Portnoy's Return and Mike Mangini's Departure Of course, one of the biggest talking points surrounding Parasomnia is Mike Portnoy's return. After a 14-year absence, the founding drummer is back, and his chemistry with the band remains undeniable. But with that, Mike Mangini, who had been an integral part of the band since 2010, stepped away, making for an emotional transition. In this interview, LaBrie gives insight into how the band navigated that change, what it's been like having Portnoy's energy back in the studio, and how it's influencing the band's creative process moving forward. The Future of Dream Theater With Parasomnia now out in the world, what's next for Dream Theater? A massive tour is on the horizon, but beyond that, LaBrie teases what's in store for the band's evolving sound and future projects. Could this be the beginning of a new golden era for the progressive metal legends? Find out all that and more in this exclusive conversation with James LaBrie on The Loaded Radio Podcast. Listen to the full episode below!
We're back for our first show of 2025, and we're bringing back our good friend Paul Logue of Eden's Curse and James LaBrie's solo band! After the success of our Empire deep dive, Paul asked if he could come back and talk some Van Halen – twist our arms! Paul chose 1991's banger For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge – this is one of Jon's favorite albums, so this promises to be a great discussion about a truly standout record from the VH catalog!

WolfTalk: Podcast About Audio Programming (People, Careers, Learning)
In this podcast episode, I was very pleased to guest Linus Corneliusson: a mixing engineer and editing assistant at Fascination Street Studios who has shifted towards audio plugin development.I met Linus (and his colleague Jacek) at the Audio Developer Conference 2022 and he's definitely one of the most friendly and funny people in the community. What is even more amazing, he's worked in the studio with top-notch heavy metal bands, like James LaBrie, Soilwork, DragonForce, Haken, Leprous, Dark Tranquility, Between the Buried and Me, and Fates Warning (basically most of the major names in the progressive metal genre). In the podcast, we discus how Linus started creating simple audio plugins on the side which led him to pursuing a full-blown career as an audio programmer for Bogren Digital. We also discuss tools, tips, and resources he used and recommends for starting in audio programming. Are you a mixing engineer looking for a way to transition into audio development? Are you seeking advice on which path to take and which resources are the best to reach out for? Do you need inspiration and motivation? Then this episode is for you!Note: If you like the podcast so far, please, go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review there. You can do so on Spotify as well. It will benefit both sides: more reviews mean a broader reach on Apple Podcasts and feedback can help me to improve the show and provide better quality content to you. This is Part II of our conversation with Dream Theater's lead singer James LaBrie. Last week, we began what seems like one of the most transparent conversations I've ever had about vocal injury and how a professional singer like him can recover and continue to create great music. Today, we continue the discussion as James talks about what he does right before a show, his support system, and some vocal idols. We also touch a bit on work-life balance as well as dive into some extra spicy Patron questions at the end! It's amazing how James takes care of his voice and how he is continuously inspired by other artists. Learning about how he overcame a traumatic vocal injury and how he hasn't let that stop him from continuing to produce incredible music was truly inspiring. Finally, his advice, especially on vocal health, is just pure gold. In this episode, you will hear: Avoiding food or drink that makes you burp A routine he does before a show Singing in passaggio The best way to support someone who has undergone a vocal injury Why many bands are touring nowadays The rise of online subscription streaming services (ex. Joe Bouchard is best known as a former member of Blue Öyster Cult. He recently released the album American Rocker. His brother Albert Bouchard is a drummer and was a founding member of Blue Öyster Cult. His newest album is Imaginos 2… It was released last year.
Dream Theater is legendary for its complex, progressive music, and James LaBrie, their lead singer, is legendary for his ability to weave a melody over rapidly evolving time signatures and musical textures. James has a massive range and a distinctive, gathered sound which cuts through to deliver his message. Not only does James sing complex music so well, but he actually overcame one of the most difficult things any singer ever faces – a serious vocal injury. In 1994, James was stricken with a severe case of food poisoning that led to a vocal hemorrhage, which is essentially a blood vessel rupturing in the vocal folds. It was the most horrific thing that could happen to any singer. Vocal health is closely intertwined with a singer's identity and self-worth, and experiencing the trauma that James went through would have caused many singers to quit. But he kept going and is still releasing albums, including his new solo album “Beautiful Shade of Gray” which came out on May 20, 2022. James's determination to continue and press through for the band and his attention to recovery and vocal health now make him a glowing inspiration. In this episode, you will hear: Preventing acid reflux Vocal modification DoctorVOX: a great device for vocal fitness Dealing with the psychological aspects of being a singer Vocal fatigue How the melody guides a singer Why you should never stop learning the voice How James' food poisoning experience led to vocal injury Working through vocal nodules Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? The latest edition of THE LOADED RADIO PODCAST is a special one as we sit down with DREAM THEATER singer James Labrie. In the discussion, James discusses his new solo album, "Beautiful Shade Of Grey", which arrives on May 20 via Inside Out Music. James Labrie's fourth solo effort sees him collaborating with guitarist/bassist/composer Paul Logue (EDEN's CURSE) as well as his son, Chance Labrie on drums, guitarist Marco Sfogl and keyboardist Christian “Chrism” Pulkkinen in a sonically stunning journey of beauty, loss and the human condition. A press release reads: 'Going beyond the thematic and personal elements, for James, ‘Beautiful Shade of Grey' presented an opportunity to capture the love and enthusiasm he feels for great songwriting through a vehicle that wasn't tied to the same rules and architypes of his other projects. Reflecting on artists that he's been drawn to over the years, ranging from JOURNEY, FOREIGNER and GINO VANELLI to CHEVELLE, BIG WRECK and PRINCE, the common thread that's kept him coming back to them was their eclectic, unpredictable output.' “All these artists had versality, and I think it's primarily because of this that they maintained my attention. They always, I believe, pushed themselves to ask, ‘what else can I do?'” James as well discusses DREAM THEATER's recent GRAMMY win for the song 'The Alien" off the band's latest album 'A View From The Top Of The World', expanding his creative wings and his current relationship with former DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy. As the frontman for Dream Theater, James LaBrie is the distinct voice for one of the most influential bands in progressive rock and metal history. Beyond his globe-trotting day job, LaBrie loves to go camping and boating. Our chat also moved into other territory, including skiing, his love for reading, and on a larger scale, the state of our planet.
