Meanwhile, the AFL is back, which means Jay is ready to pretend he understands the rules while Corey nods politely. Jay also recounts his wild adventures at Knotfest. Oh and of course, there's wrestling—because apparently, that's what this podcast is about. Oh, and by the way… JOHN CENA TURNED HEEL. All this and more on Smack It Down!

Words by Kris PetersKnotfest throws up so many sonic moments of metal fury each year, but one of the lesser known - but equally as interesting - parts of the travelling music festival is the Knotfest Museum.Assembled from a massive collection of Slipknot memorabilia from the entirety of the bands' history, the Knotfest Museum is a treasure trove of goodness for the discerning Maggot, and even those with just a passing interest in a band that has revolutionised the world of heavy metal.Showcasing everything from old masks to costumes to photos to rarities (last years was Clown's solid gold mask, out of captivity for the first time ever) to the opportunity to actually play guitars as used on stage by Jim Root, Mick Thompson and V-Man, the Knotfest Museum is a must-see addition to Knotfest and one which will leave you in awe and wonderment as you marvel at Slipknot's history. And, of course, this year will be that little bit more special with a specifically curated museum focussing on Slipknot's 25th anniversary and everything it entails.HEAVY caught up with Slipknot Museum Global Director Caelin Meredith from the official Slipknot warehouse - for the once-in-a-lifetime, never-before-seen secret location - to find out more. We talk about everything from what it takes to put together the Slipknot Museum, how much input the band has in the process, what special items we might get, how different this years museum will be to last year, the interactive/playable content, booking entry, why the Slipknot Museum is a must for Knotfest attendees and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
“Don't make it weird…” “They all wear jumpsuits, they're kinda like KISS because you don't know what they look like, but they kinda look like serial killers because they all have masks on, and you kinda get Purge vibes when you look at it (the album cover), and then you LISTEN to it…” SLIPKNOT as a band is extremely off-putting, exhausting, and quite frankly, disturbing, and their self-titled debut album conveys these qualities in the darkest way possible. The album cover alone is the stuff of horror movies and nightmares, featuring all nine members clothed in red prison jumpsuits with their faces covered in grotesquely disfigured masks: nameless and faceless, with only a number and a barcode to identify them. Interview by Angela CroudacePolaris is heading to Knotfest, and if you're not already pumped, you should be. The Aussie metal juggernauts are ready to tear it up alongside some of the biggest names in heavy music. HEAVY had the chance to chat with guitarist Rick Schneider about what it's like to be part of the iconic line up, what's in store for fans, and what's next for the band. When asked about joining Knotfest, Rick's reaction was simple and pure: “To be part of Knotfest, Slipknot's playing, that's kind of the pinnacle thing. Everyone is stoked on that. As soon as we got the offer, it was like, all right, well, we'll make that work.” For a band like Polaris, joining such a legendary festival line up feels like both a milestone and a natural step in their meteoric rise.Rick revealed that, while they didn't throw a huge party when they got the news, there was an undeniable sense of excitement among the band. “It's always nice to play at home, especially after a long time away. Every time we come back, it feels like a homecoming,” he said, speaking to the deep connection they have with their Australian fans.As for what fans can expect at the festival, Rick promised a balanced set that'll appeal to both new listeners and die-hard supporters alike. “We're definitely playing the new singles, but we're also making sure to keep it heavy and include some classics, like Lucid,” he shared, adding, “We have ample time, so it should be a good one.”When asked about his favourite song to perform live, Rick didn't hesitate: “Probably Hypermania. It's got heaps of energy, and it's one of those songs where everything fits into shape—less stress, big payoff.”And while it might surprise some, Rick admitted he's not the band's biggest Slipknot fan: "I'm the least Slipknot fan out of the guys," he laughed, but he still recognizes the sheer energy of playing such a huge festival. As for advice to aspiring Aussie bands? Rick keeps it real: “Social media is everything these days. You never know what platform might take off. Just get your music out there in every way you can.”Catch Polaris and more at Knotfest Australia 2025. It's going to be a metal lover's dream, and with Rick's focus on delivering a killer performance, this year's festival is shaping up to be one for the books!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Angela CroudaceIn our interview with Jake Taylor, the powerhouse vocalist of Australian metal band In Hearts Wake, we dug into the band's latest album Incarnation, their connection to tarot, and the unique creative journey behind their latest work. The concept for Incarnation is deeply rooted in the band's early fascination with tarot, something that's been in Taylor's life since childhood. “My mum was a tarot reader, so I grew up around people coming to her for readings,” Jake shared, “On this album, every song aligns with a major arcana card, but we've flipped them upside down,” he explained. This inversion of meanings reflects the darker, shadowy themes explored on the record. Incarnation delves deep into the underworld, musically and spiritually, creating a sonic experience that's intense, raw, and unrelenting.Jake also revealed that tarot is more than just a lyrical motif for the band—it's a tool for personal reflection. “We've turned to tarot during pivotal moments, like when we were figuring out the exit of a band member, just to see if things were aligned,” he said. This insight goes beyond mere fortune-telling, instead helping the band navigate life's challenging decisions.Aside from the mystical, Jake also spoke about the band's growth and experiences. Touring internationally, including a huge milestone tour with Slipknot and Lamb of God, has cemented In Hearts Wake's reputation as a force in the heavy music scene. In 2025, In Hearts Wake will bring their dark, powerful sound to Australia's Knotfest for the first time. The band is eager to take their place alongside metal heavyweights like Slipknot and Polaris. “It's a nice recognition,”Jake reflected, “Australia gets it—it gets the heavy music, the humour, and the wild places. We can't wait to share that connection on home soil.” It promises to be an unmissable moment for fans. When it comes to advice for aspiring Aussie musicians, Jake stressed the importance of staying grounded. “It's got to be about the music and the people first,” he advised. “Don't chase the numbers game. Find the roots that keep you connected to what you love.”With Incarnation now out, In Hearts Wake continues to push boundaries, blending their passion for music with a spiritual depth that's unique in the metal world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Angela CroudaceAfter nearly three decades, Sharon den Adel, lead vocalist of Within Temptation, is finally bringing the band to Australia for the first time! During an interview with HEAVY, Sharon shared her excitement for performing at Knotfest and reflected on the band's long-awaited journey to the land down under. When asked about the band's lengthy absence from Australia, Sharon admitted, “There's no real good excuse except that it was difficult to fit in and to find the right promoter to bring us over… but after 30 years, we're finally coming!” She also discussed the challenges of long flights, especially with the notorious 24-hour trip to Australia, stating,"I'm going to try, it's going to be a new experiment.”Sharon is looking forward to more than just playing at Knotfest, where she'll share the stage with legendary bands. “It's like a candy store,” she says, eager to explore the festival lineup.A notable part of Within Temptation's music is their bold political commentary. Sharon explained that the band felt compelled to address global issues like the war in Ukraine and the plight of women in Iran. “We have a platform, and we stand for certain values… It's important to talk about these things,” she says, emphasising that as artists, it's their responsibility to use their voice for change.Sharon also opened up about the challenges of being a female frontwoman in a male-dominated genre. She shared that despite facing some initial resistance from certain fans, she's always felt at home in the metal scene. "I've always felt very at home in the metal (scene)… I was never separated because I was a woman," Sharon revealed. She also reflected on the broader impact her presence—and that of other women—has had on the genre, saying, "The more there is of us, the more diversity, and it makes the scene more interesting." Sharon's perspective highlights how women in metal have paved the way for future generations, encouraging young female musicians to carve out their own space in the industry. With their long-awaited Australian side shows scheduled in Brisbane and Melbourne, fans can expect to hear not just their iconic symphonic metal, but a band that's unafraid to speak out on the world's pressing issues.Catch Within Temptation at Knotfest and Monday 3 March - Princess Theatre, Brisbane, Thursday 6 March - Max Watts, Melbourne.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

May 3, 1988, may just be the biggest, red-letter, landmark date in all of progressive metal, as it marks the release of QUEENSRYCHE's 3rd studio album OPERATION: MINDCRIME, one of the finest concept albums in all of metal. It's very much a “Pink Floyd meets heavy metal” style and vibe, and is quite a departure from their two previous albums (The Warning & Rage For Order), with a very “in your face” mix, some power metal overtones, and perhaps the most aggressive bass sound on a metal album EVER, which is weirdly ironic considering that QUEENSRYCHE was the weirdest opening band choice to open for the biggest thrash metal band on the planet (at the time) who had just released an album that, conversely, had the most absent bass sound on a metal album EVER. (Sometimes life is just way too weird…) Remember that $25 was a small price to pay in 1988 to become “a happy man” even though “only YOU can make YOU happy” (because “you rent ‘em, you don't buy ‘em”). Prepare to find out the answer to “which would be worse?”, discover where to go for any “gift ideas”, learn the identify of Matt's doppelganger and hear about Russell's “Mr. Miyagi moment”, including the resulting “truck trim” prior to making his transition from guitar player to bass player. Remember that “any band who mentions two thrash references on one album can't be all that bad”, go get yourself a summer “skinjob” and JOIN US as we dive into one of the most world-renowned rock operas in all of metal with OPERATION: MINDCRIME.
