They've continued to push the genre forward with ten subsequent releases—including 2023's raw, visceral Foregone—further strengthening their core sound that, at its heart, is a modernized blend of intensified Iron Maiden and accelerated Black Sabbath. Before the band's headlining show at Nashville's Marathon Music Works, In Flames' Björn Gelotte, Chris Broderick, and Liam Wilson welcomed PG's Perry Bean for a conversation about their powerful setups. Gelotte detailed his workingman's signature Epiphone Les Paul Custom before his tech Greg Winn showcased a pair of unknown Marshall prototype amps never featured on a Rundown. Shredmeister general Chris Broderick discussed hands-on approach to designing his signature sound that includes a beveled Jackson Diabolic CB2, modified DiMarzio humbuckers, and a thumbpick he invented. Lastly, Wilson compared the requirements and difficulties between playing bass with Dillinger Escape and In Flames before dissecting his morphing setup that's trying to feel like home but honor Peter Iwers and Bryce Paul thunderous footsteps. Interview by Kris PetersMegadeth are one of the few bands in the world - of any genre - that need no introduction. For four decades they have been at the forefront of the metal landscape, with their most recent album The Sick, The Dying and The Dead their highest selling to date. Whereas most bands plateau somewhat or more often decline in the back end of their career Megadeth are doing the exact opposite.Which makes frontman Dave Mustaine one happy camper. Now, after nearly eight years, Megadeth are poised to return to Australia as part of Knotfest from March 24 to 26, with two side shows also scheduled for Adelaide and Melbourne.Which makes Mustaine even happier.HEAVY sat down for an awesome chat with the great man earlier this morning for a frank and open discussion about anything and everything. One of the topics of conversation was what has changed with Megadeth since their last venture Down Under in 2015."Well, ALOT," he laughed. "We've had some lineup changes and every time we do that the person that came in was better. When we parted ways with the drummer before Dirk (Verbeuren) - it was the person before Chris Adler, which was Shawn Drover - we tried to get the Rust In Peace line-up back together but it didn't work because Nick (Menza) went off one way and we went off the other. We contacted Adler and asked if he would play on the record and maybe contact Nick again and have him tour with us because he couldn't really do the record. That didn't work out either, so we had Chris do the record and stay, and while we were doing that Chris and his band parted ways and we didn't know if Chris was going to stay with us or stay with them. Of course, we wanted him to stay with Lamb Of God and I'm sad that he left and there's any kind of distance between the family. I do think that Art (Cruz) is an amazing drummer and then after that Chris Adler recommended Dirk, and Dirk is - in my mind - the best drummer we've had since Gar Samuelson. He's a big fan of Gar, and that is the power that drives Megadeth. Jazz metal, not rock metal. Nick was a super talented and powerful drummer and he fortunately was able to do a lot of those jazz hooks too, so we almost had that magic that we did when Gar was there. But we definitely had something which Gar did not, which was the power that Nick Menza possessed. Same thing can go down the line with the bass playing. (Dave) Ellefson was in the band, then was out. James (LoMenzo) came in, he was out. Ellefson came back because the Drover brothers kept pressuring me to do this, get Ellefson back. He came in and we had that weird shit that happened. I had Steve Di Giorgio come in and record the record and James is back and I love that he's back. The singing is fabulous on stage. He actually can sing really well, so he helps encourage me to sing. And then Kiko (Loureiro, guitars) as you know... I parted ways with Chris Broderick - I mean where do you go from having Marty Friedman and Chris Poland and it's time to make a guitar player change again? So Kiko, I saw a video on line of Kiko actually being put head to head against Chris Broderick, someone made a video of that, and I watched it and I went fuck I gotta get in touch with this guy. The funny thing is that when I contacted him he said that he had been talking to Ellefson, so when I talked to Ellefson the next time I said what the fucks wrong with you, man? Why didn't you tell me you know this guy(laughs)? So that was a great addition to the band. Kiko and James play really well together and Kiko and Dirk have an amazing ability to play those crazy riffs together. Of course, we can always be better, so we all go into the jam room every day and try and work on little bits and pieces of a song and our record producer is out with us on the road as our music director keeping our chops up."In the full interview, Dave talks about being part of Knotfest, the two sideshows and how they will differ from the festival shows, forty years in the music industry, listening to your body when it comes to performing, the increasing difficulty in coming up with a set list to keep fans happy, the early days of Megadeth and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, becoming more understanding of your environment with experience, musical trends and how they have affected Megadeth, what he hopes to leave as the band's musical legacy, the top three Commandments of Metal and more.
On 2 January 2022, Chris Broderick, who had entertained, amused and provoked with his writing of all disciplines, passed away. Over the course of his life he'd amassed a large collection of songs, stories and plays, all filled with his on unique linguistic flair and his sheer love of humanity in al its warts and all glory.Towards the end of his life, he entered a flurry of creative activity, not realising he would not be able to see the completion of these final projects. This interview with his collaborator, Stuart Turner, explores the final musical adventures of Chris Broderick. This podcast is also available as a video on the Reviewage Youtube channel.

The Halo Effect's debut album, Days of the Lost, is available now, and it captures the essence of old-school In Flames; given most of the band are or were in In Flames, that's hardly a surprise. Throughout the conversation, Niclas discusses the album, the health and well-being of former In Flames guitarist Jesper Strömblad, and whether he plans to reignite Gardenian. As former Megadeth guitarist Chris Broderick has been part of the In Flames touring lineup since 2019, it was intriguing to hear Niclas' response to the question of his ongoing membership of the group. You will have to tune in and hear what he has to say.
Shawn Drover is a Canadian musician, best known for his work with the American heavy metal band Megadeth. He began playing the drums at the age of 13. In 1993 he founded the Canadian power metal band, Eidolon, with his brother Glen. He uses Sabian cymbals and Yamaha drums, Pro-mark drum sticks, Toca Percussion, Evans Drumheads and Extreme Isolation headphones. After ten years in Megadeth, Drover announced his departure from the band on November 25, 2014, the same day that guitarist Chris Broderick also left the band.[1] The pair formed the extreme metal supergroup Act of Defiance together in late 2014.
On 2 January 2022 Chris Broderick – singer, writer, playwright – and all round self-confessed complicated human passed away. Chris was a big souled human being – always seeking to make sense of the big old messy world in which we live. Almost everything he created conveyed – in some way - a deep yearning – through stories either tragic and comic – and sometime both – to understand and celebrate the perfect imperfections of lives lived. His own and others. This episode is focused entirely on Chris Broderick and the music he created with The Singing Loins: Chris – Arfur – Allen, Rob Shepherd and, towards the end of it, John Forrester.
Its episode 42 and we have a special guest with us for this week's Broken Record in the form of metal aficionado and Hell Bent for Metal Podcast creator Tom Dare. And this particular episode is catered to his tastes perfectly … or it would be, if we weren't talking about an album written and released in the past 10 years of 'anything you can do I can better' Metallica copyists Megadeth's career. Hold on to your hadron collider's cause we're talking Super Collider. Released on June 4, 2013, Super Collider marked the first time the band had released more than one album with the same lineup since 1997's Cryptic Writings, however it is the band's final album to feature drummer Shawn Drover and guitarist Chris Broderick, due to their departures from Megadeth in November 2014. The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and has sold over 86,000 copies in the United States as of December 2015, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics with a Metacritic rating of 41/100 We discuss the lead up to this album, which had, for the most part, placed Megadeth in the best position they'd been in since the early 90s. They ballsed up most of that good will with this album, but where will we rank it on our list of Broken Records?
Grandioso... semplicemente grandioso

REDEMPTION is one of the leading progressive metal bands in the world today. Formed in Los Angeles, California in 2000 by guitarist / keyboardist / songwriter Nicolas van Dyk, the band features iconic vocalist Tom S. Englund of Evergrey, the phenomenal rhythm section of Chris Quirarte (drums) and Sean Andrews (bass), keyboard phenom Vikram Shankar, and additional guitar work from the legendary Chris Poland (Megadeth, OHM) and Simone Mularoni (DGM). First gaining notoriety with their sophomore release, 2005’s 'The Fullness Of Time' (which featured former vocalist Ray Alder of Fates Warning), the band released their third CD, 'The Origins Of Ruin', in 2007 and followed with a tour of North America in support of progressive metal icons Dream Theater. They followed this up with a live CD/DVD of their performance at the ProgPower USA festival, 'Frozen In The Moment', in 2008. In 2009 they released 'Snowfall On Judgment Day' (which included a guest vocal performance from James LaBrie of Dream Theater), followed by 2011’s 'This Mortal Coil', after which they toured Europe for the first time and released their second live CD/DVD, 'Live From The Pit', in 2013. 2016 saw REDEMPTION deliver 'The Art Of Loss', which features not only Simone Mularoni and Chris Poland but also guitarists Marty Friedman and Chris Broderick, as well as guest performance from John Bush of Armored Saint/ex-Anthrax. Following the departure of Alder in early 2017, the band joined forces with the formidable voice of Tom S. Englund, and released its seventh studio CD, 'Long Night’s Journey Into Day', in 2018, again with Poland and Mularoni. Later that same year, the band - with live guest appearances by Mularoni, Poland and Ray Alder - headlined the 2018 edition of the ProgPower USA festival, recording the performance with multiple cameras under the direction of Patric Ullaeus (known for his videos for Evergrey, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amaranthe and others). With REDEMPTION newly signed to AFM Records, the live package is being released as 'Alive In Color', as BluRay/2-CD and DVD/2-CD sets (both including Redemption’s live performance of the Megadeth classic 'Peace Sells' featuring Poland, believed to be the first time he performed that on stage in over 20 years). Soon thereafter, REDEMPTION will return to the studio to begin work on its 8th studio CD, which will come from AFM sometime in 2021.
In the fall of 2009 Megadeth released 'Endgame' as a follow-up to 2007's United Abominations, with a new guitarist on board (Chris Broderick) and Dave's book coming out and the Big 4 on the horizon Megadeth had a busy year ahead of them. www.apodcastandacd.com @APodcastandaCD

He used to play guitar -- now, after battling ALS for nearly three decades, he "plays guitar players," as well as writes for orchestras and choirs. And when he puts the two together, he blows your mind -- as you'll find out if snag his new album, TRIUMPHANT HEARTS. The record should please insatiable guitar fans everywhere, because it features an A-list roster of guest guitarists, including Trevor Rabin, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, Ben Woods, Aleks Sever, Steve Morse, Neal Schon, Marty Friedman, Daniele Gottardo, Dave Shul, Steve Hunter, Gus G, Uli Jon Roth, Chris Broderick, and others, as well as ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro.
