In this episode of VRP Rocks, Paul Stephenson is joined by guitarist Chris Poland, best known for his time in Megadeth. Chris is back with a major new project, Nuclear Messiah, and the album Black Flame — a star-studded release featuring an incredible lineup including Arthur Brown, William Shatner, Rick Wakeman, Joe Lynn Turner, Sebastian Bach, Bumblefoot, Marty Friedman, Pat Travers and many more. In the interview, Chris talks about how this ambitious record came together, the unusual and inspired cover song choices, and what it was like hearing so many iconic musicians bring their own style to the album. He also shares his thoughts on standout tracks, working around such a huge cast of players, and why the finished record feels so special. And of course, the conversation also turns to Chris's early years in Megadeth — recording the first two albums, the story behind These Boots, memories of Peace Sells, and why he ultimately chose not to return for Rust in Peace. A fascinating chat with one of metal's most distinctive guitarists. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Marty Friedman is a multi-platinum recording artist and government-appointed Ambassador to Japan Heritage. He has written three books in Japanese and had long running columns in the Asahi Weekly, Nikkei Entertainment, Cyzo, Big Comic, Young Guitar, Guitar World and Burrn. The show opens with a moving tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, formerly of Black Sabbath, who passed away on July 25, 2025. Friedman then turns to the reason for writing his book, co-authored with Jon Wiederhorn. He talks about the co-writing process and describes it as “putting his musical abilities into words.” His latest solo release, Drama, he calls his best and most romantic work to date — a largely orchestral album that stretches beyond his usual style. He also reflects on the Japanese entertainment industry, the uniquely Japanese idea of heta-uma, idol music, and the role of “cuteness” in J-Pop. Producers such as Tsunku and Komuro Tetsuya play a key role in drawing out this unique appeal. J-Pop carries deeper cultural nuance than outsiders might assume. In addition, Friedman reflects on scandals, music managers ,and his first rehearsal with a J-Pop band. Interview by Ali WilliamsIf you've ever wondered what it takes to fly the classic hard-rock flag out of a country where Bollywood runs the audio monopoly, Girish and the Chronicles have the answer: persistence, volume, and a deep love of the big-chorus, big-guitar stuff that got most of us into this mess in the first place. Ali's chat with bassist Yogi quickly locks into the band's origin story, which starts simple and very rock'n'roll: Girish was gigging solo as “Girish Unplugged,” the rest of the crew jumped in, “The Chronicles” got scribbled onto the poster, and suddenly it was a full band with a proper name and a mission. Musically, they're not pretending to reinvent the wheel, they're polishing it and lighting it on fire. Yogi straight-up credits the holy trinity of hard rock and metal upbringing: Guns N' Roses, AC/DC and Iron Maiden, and you can hear that DNA all over the newer material. Ali clocks it immediately and calls out the classic-rock backbone, which Yogi happily owns. On home turf, the Indian heavy scene sits in the shadow of a massive mainstream industry, but Yogi explains the maths of it: even a “small percentage” of rock and metal fans becomes a serious crowd when your population is… well, India. He points to the proof: when international bands hit major cities like Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi, the rooms are stacked and the fans actually know the songs, sing along, and show up loud. The conversation also ducks into Asia and the band's wider wish-list. Japan sits high on it, with Yogi nerding out over anime and shouting out Japan's long-standing rock culture, plus names like Marty Friedman and Paul Gilbert as examples of how deep that scene runs. They've already played Thailand and Vietnam, and he's clear-eyed about the next step: Southeast Asia needs more work, more shows, more presence. Then comes the bit Australia always cares about: yes, they're coming here, and it's soon. Yogi says they land on the 15th March for their first ever trip “Down Under” not just as a band, but as tourists too. They're lining up roughly five to six shows across the major cities, plus a New Zealand date. The tour kicks off in Brisbane, at the Crow Bar, and they've got a couple of days between landing and the first show (they mention the first gig being on the 19th) to explore, soak up the country and, naturally, sample the pub culture that keeps this nation emotionally upright. Ali does her civic duty and warns them about drop bears, prompting Yogi to promise he'll Google it, which is the correct response to any Australian wildlife briefing. Fresh music is also on the immediate horizon. Yogi says a new album is coming, with a couple of singles released first, and that the full production is finished, they're just waiting on the official release date. They're also tossing around music video ideas and hoping to shoot footage while in Australia. Their video “process” is pleasingly human: start with an idea that fits the song, then accept that things drift off-script and sometimes the unplanned bits end up being the best bits. There's a quick peek behind the curtain on what else the band has been up to too. Yogi notes that while the group's focus is firmly on Girish and the Chronicles, Girish has been involved in side projects with some serious names (George Lynch and Jeff Pilson get mentioned, along with Chris Adler and Joel Hoekstra), especially after signing with Frontiers. It's a neat reminder that while the band has that classic-rock heart, they're plugged into the wider rock world and they're not shy about doing the work to stay there. Bottom line: Girish and the Chronicles aren't selling a gimmick. They're a hard-rock band from a country where rock isn't the default setting, who've still managed to stack up major support slots, years of European touring, a surprise AGT run, and now an Aussie/NZ tour with a new album loading in the chamber. If you want to see what happens when the “classic” part of classic rock turns out to be alive, sweaty, and very ready to prove a point, grab a ticket and give them some lovin.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Megadeth's Rust in Peace didn't just elevate thrash metal — it transformed it. In this in-depth 10-minute video essay, we dive into the album's creation, the classic lineup, and how technical mastery and political storytelling shaped one of the most influential metal records of all time.
In this week’s episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we’re diving into the thrash metal battleground with Megadeth’s explosive fourth album, Rust in Peace. Released on September 24, 1990, this record not only cemented Megadeth’s legacy as one of the "Big Four" of thrash (alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax), but it also pushed the genre into technically masterful and politically charged territory. This was Dave Mustaine’s first album featuring lead guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza, forming what many consider the band’s ultimate lineup. From the opening riff of "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" to the laser-precise fretwork on "Hangar 18," Rust in Peace is a relentless assault of speed, complexity, and precision. Mustaine’s songwriting balances anti-war themes, conspiracy theories, and dystopian visions — and wraps them in some of the most intricate metal arrangements ever pressed to wax. The album received widespread critical acclaim and is now regarded as a cornerstone of thrash metal, earning Grammy nominations and spots on numerous “greatest albums” lists. It’s a record that influenced not just metalheads, but also shaped the evolution of progressive and technical metal for decades to come. Whether you’re a longtime fan or experiencing it for the first time, Rust in Peace is more than an album — it’s a mission statement from a band firing on all cylinders and changing the game in the process.
Amy Chavez opens the show by asking Friedman to give a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away on July 25, 2025. Friedman then turns to the reason for writing his book, co-authored by music journalist John Weiderhorn. Friedman talks about the co-writing process and describes it as “putting his musical abilities into words.” His latest solo release, Drama, he calls his best and most romantic work to date — a largely orchestral album that stretches beyond his usual style.Beyond music, Friedman reflects on being a “foreign talento” on Japanese TV, participating in variety shows, commercials, and thoughts on the Japanese entertainment industry. He reveals his inner growth writing the anime theme song Kirei na Senritsu (Beautiful Melody) for Kotoko. Friedman also shares his favorite Japanese book, Ai no Eigyō Hōshin (The Principles of Love Management) by Japanese producer Tsunku, advising young Japanese men on how to cultivate confidence. His favorite J-Pop songs are AKB48's “Heavy Rotation” which he recalls performing with them at the Budokan. He praises Kahala Tomomi's “I'm Proud” as an example of the Japanese concept of heta-uma which he explains at length in the podcast discussion. He points to Ikimono Gakari as another recommendation for those interested in learning more about J-Pop. “We can't ever talk about this so let's talk about not talking about it when we're talking about it…” Released on July 14th, 1992, COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION, the 5th MEGADETH album (and the 2nd to feature “the classic lineup” of Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, Marty Friedman, and Nick Menza) would become the follow up to “one of the most perfect thrash albums of all time”, featuring a more streamlined, simplified, straight forward approach which served as a sonic palette cleanser to the progressive thrash complexity of 1990's masterpiece, Rust In Peace. Simply stated, COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION is complex in its simplicity. Even though this might be the most offensive episode we've ever made, we'd like to remind everyone that we're still all about “rainbows and peaches” even though we've emphatically stated for the record that “we're not gonna talk about it”. Remember proper cell phone etiquette to avoid being bothersome to others, prepare yourself for “The Average Double-Team”, head on down to Dangol County for some “High Speed Dirt”, and last but not least, find out “how to get out of offending anybody” when you “go pick up some honkies” and JOIN US as we start the clock and begin our analysis of MEGADETH's COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION. This episode features Benny, a musician and producer who performs under the name Muted Circus. Benny, originally from Orange County, California, is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He spent seven years in Tokyo, Japan, and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. The discussion starts with Benny sharing the story of his first rock concert at the age of 13, where he saw The Get Up Kids in a small, intimate venue in his hometown. This concert sparked his lifelong passion for live music, leading him to attend concerts frequently, including during his college years and time in Japan. Benny reminisces about the DIY music scene of Orange County in the '90s and shares anecdotes about attending shows with his older brother and friends. He also recalls a memorable yet disappointing encounter with Dave Mustaine from Megadeth during a concert in Tokyo, juxtaposing it with a positive experience meeting Marty Friedman, a former Megadeth guitarist. The conversation then shifts towards Benny's musical project, Muted Circus, a deeply personal undertaking inspired by the death of his father. The project comprises 10 EPs with 50 songs, each featuring his father's visual artwork on the covers. Benny explains how creating this music helped him process his grief and reflect on his relationship with his father. He delves into the themes explored in his music, often revolving around the impact of his parents on his life. Benny shares the challenges and emotional journey of writing and recording these songs over several years. He also introspects on the nuances of live vs. recorded music and the emotional resonance that well-produced music can often deliver.During the interview, Benny performs 'Disconnection,' a song from his final EP in the Muted Circus series. The song captures the sentiment of final phone calls with a loved one and reflects Benny's extensive relationship with his father through daily check-ins on the phone. Jason Fraley interviews former Megadeath lead guitarist Marty Friedman, who rocks the Rams Head in Annapolis, Maryland on Feb. 7 and the Tally Ho Theatre in Leesburg, Virginia on Feb. 11. He reflects on his journey from growing up in Laurel, Maryland to gaining thrash-metal fame with Megadeath and becoming a pop-culture sensation in Japan, all chronicled in his autobiography “Dreaming Japanese.” (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")
Patrick KennisonWhen he's not rocking stages as lead guitarist in Lita Ford's band, Patrick Kennison is prolific in his own right as the frontman for Heaven Below and co-guitarist/co-vocalist in an acoustic duo alongside his wife, Nikki Stringfield of the Iron Maidens. He joins us to discuss an upcoming tour supporting Marty Friedman, the “Ghost Notes” EP with wife Nikki and the upcoming Heaven Below album, “The Majestic Twelve.” We also learn about a cease-and-desist from Metallica, a Nine Inch Nails audition and how Rob Zombie lured him out to Hollywood more than 20 years ago.Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
Marty Friedman is playing the Token Lounge on Friday, January 31st, but first, he spoke with me on numerous topics. His latest book is called Dreaming Japanese. In the book, he talks about the highs and lows of playing in a monstrous band like Megadeth, leaving and starting over in a foreign land. He said he read other autobiographies to give himself a clearer look at what he wanted his to be like. “I got a feel as a reader of what I wanted to read myself. And as a result, I wound up being flat honest and talking about embarrassing things about myself, and I didn’t always paint myself in a good light.” As he puts it, talking about the good things he’s done might read more like a resume, not a personal behind-the-scenes look that he wanted to give the fans. He said, “I’m definitely not the hero in all of these stories.” As far as leaving Megadeth went, he said he’d never really talked about it before. ” Once I left Megadeth, I stopped doing interviews about the band completely.” He told me that the venues he played at, weren’t allowed to promote the show with anything Megadeth. Now he wants to talk about the relationships and the inner turmoil as he decided to exit the band. “I feel really bad about the way I left the band, and the situation I left them in, and you can in the book why it turned out that way…and there’s no excusing what I did. It wasn’t going to happen any other way.” He said that joining the band on stage for two concerts in 2023 closed the chapter on that part of his life, which was still open. ” Yeah, especially the Budokan show in Japan. That was one thing that was hanging over, ya know.” He spoke of wanting to play at that venue from an early age. Now, he’s played it several times, but there was a need to play that place with Megadeth. He called it “unfinished business”. When we (Dave Mustaine and him) had the chance to play there, it was a big celebration.” He said that even though they went down different paths to meet up at that gig over the years, it was like a love letter to the fans when it was all said and done. “It was definite closure!” He also spoke to the massive popularity of the band in the early 90s. “What led up to it was more interesting than actually getting there. The suffering part of the career. It reads better in the book.” He then describes it as taking a “massive dump”. Yes, you need to hear him talk about the rise of the band with a bowel movement analogy. I think it’s been about 26 years since I last spoke with Marty. Great to have him back on Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown.

Who's up for some thrash metal?Megadeth is one of the founding bands of the thrash metal genre, and considered one of the "big four" of U.S. thrash metal (along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer). The heart of the band, primary songwriter, and sole constant member of the band throughout the years is Dave Mustaine. The formation of the band is well known as a revenge effort on Mustaine's part. He was fired from his role as lead guitarist of Metallica just prior to the recording of their debut album due to personal issues with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and due to drug abuse problems. The name of the group was inspired by a political pamphlet from Alan Cranston that read "The arsenal of megadeath can't be rid no matter what the peace treaties come to." Mustaine took the word out of that pamphlet and adjusted the spelling.Rust In Peace is the group's fourth studio album, released in late September but featured in November as it was gaining traction with fans at the time. The album name came from a bumper sticker Mustaine saw that read, "May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace." It was the first album to feature Marty Friedman on guitar and Nick Menza on drums. Dave Mustaine is on guitars and lead vocals, and long time collaborator David Ellefson completes the quartet on bass and backing vocals. The album takes on a number of topics including religion, plitics, warfare, and personal issues Dave Mustaine was dealing with such as drug and alcohol addiction. Mustaine explored a number of religious expressions over his life, and became a born again Christian after attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and focusing on his Christian faith. Lynch brings us this hallmark album of thrash metal in this week's podcast Holy Wars...the Punishment DueThe opening track starts fast, shifts to a slower acoustic bridge, and finishes at a higher speed. The lyrics discuss religious conflict with particular attention being paid to the situations in Israel and Northern Ireland. The subtitle "the Punishment Due" is a reference to the Marvel comic book character called the Punisher. It was the first single released from the album Hangar 18The second single is the second track from the album, and was inspired by the Roswell alien conspiracy theory. Hangar 18 is supposedly located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and was believed to be the location where an alien spacecraft and/or bodies were stored.Tornado of SoulsThis is a somewhat deeper cut since it was never released as a single, but it is considered a staple of the band's discography. Marty Friedman's guitar solo in this piece is considered one of the best metal solos of all time, and one of the hardest to play. Bassist David Ellefson co-wrote the lyrics, making it one of the few songs on the album not written by Mustane alone.Rust in Peace...PolarisThe concluding song reflects the album title. It is written from the perspective of a Polaris nuclear weapon, and reflects the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shotgun by Junior Walker & The All Stars (from the motion picture “Misery”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Full Circle by the Jeff Healey BandRob starts the staff pick with this blues-infused pick which is the lead track to the Jeff Healey Band's second album, "Hell to Pay." Bobby Whitlock, a member of the supergroup Derek and the Dominos is playing the Hammond organ on this piece. Jeff Healey, blind since an early age, was known for holding his guitar in his lap while playing.Vigilante Man by Hindu Love GodsWayne's staff pick is a bit of a super group. Warren Zevon got together with the members of REM minus Michael Stipe to create this single album on a lark. The group recorded old standards for the album, and this one was originally done by Woody Guthrie in 1940. The song itslef is about hired thugs who would chase away migrants trying to escape the Dust Bowl by moving to California.Traveling Riverside Blues by Led ZeppelinBruce features another cover song, this one written by Robert Johnson in 1937. Led Zeppelin recorded it in 1969, but it was not released until 1990, over ten years after "Fool in the Rain," their last single. It hit number 7 on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart in November 1990.Blaze of Glory by Jon Bon JoviLynch finishes the staff picks with a rock ballad containing elements of country and western, written for the motion picture "Young Guns II." It won the Golden Globe award for Best Original Song, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it one of Bon Jovi's most successful solo hits. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme from the motion picture "Dances with Wolves" by the Royal Scots Dragoon GuardsThis cinematic piece accompanied the Kevin Costner Western which was out in 1990. Send Steve a Text MessageEver wondered how to strike that perfect chord between playing a song note-for-note and weaving in the threads of your own musical identity? That's the question we unpack as I share my personal experiences and tips on balancing authenticity with innovation on the guitar. We traverse the landscape of music learning, discussing the golden days of ear-learning before the internet era, and how those practices shaped musicians into the artists they are today. Reflecting on the likes of Steve Vai, Tommy Emmanuel, and Michael Britt, we dissect the notion that perfection lies in replication, and instead, celebrate the quirks and individual flair that make guitar playing deeply personal.Embark with me as we zoom in on the distinctive styles of legendary guitarists, using Megadeth's Kiko Loureiro's fresh take on Marty Friedman's solos as a case study in artful adaptation. With no guests but a treasure trove of insights, this episode is an ode to the guitarist's journey of self-discovery—find out how improvisation, theory, and fretboard knowledge converge to help you sculpt a sound that's unapologetically yours. Whether it's respecting the original or reshaping a classic like "Cliffs of Dover" to suit your style, this conversation is a reminder that the strings of the guitar are as much about the music they play as the story they tell.
