Megadeth are a band that has polarised music lovers almost from the outset.Despite a successive string of hit albums, the band has always been more defined by past members and their ongoing feuds with vocalist Dave Mustaine. While music will always be the victor, these public disputes have always threatened to overshadow the music and while those spats continue to this second there is also another, more poignant and pressing matter to divert our attention. The debut Australian tour dubbed Kings Of Thrash which features two of Megadeth's most noticeable and popular former band members in guitarist Jeff Young and bass player David Ellefson is finally coming Down Under. After setting stages alight overseas, Kings Of Thrash have landed in Australia for a run of four shows starting in Canberra on July 12 before winding its way through Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney over successive days. What's more, the set will consist of two classic albums - Killing is my Business….and Business is Good as well as So Far, So Good… So What - which will be played in full in this country for the very first time.HEAVY tracked down Jeff Young for his only Australian interview (Ellefson handled the bulk of press)."It's a brutal show to perform," Young smiled. "Our drummer goes through three t-shirts sometimes per show. He rings out his shirt and can fill up a full glass of water (laughs). It's two brutal albums, a lot of fast tempos and shredding chops abound. We've already done this tour. We did about a month and a few days in America already, so I think we got our conditioning up. I think we're good to go, all systems go."We ask if playing albums front to back poses specific difficulties, especially considering when they were recorded the likelihood of them being played in their entirety would not have been considered."We've really just worked through each song," he measured. "It was lucky, back when I got the gig I went down to Capital Records and I had the engineer pull the two inch tapes for Peace Sells and Killing Is My Business and I soloed all the rhythm guitar parts and all the lead solos, and by some miracle I saved those cassettes all these years and that's what I used to go through each song measure by measure, cell by cell, phrase by phrase, sentence by sentence. I was kind of the musical director that had to crawl through and relearn or learn all the guitar parts, because I had done maybe four Killing Is My Business songs back in the day and of course all the So Far, So Good, So What stuff. That was a little easier to pick up because I played on that record. But I spent a lot of time just crawling through in slow motion. I have an app that once I extracted all the notes and the audio from the cassettes and I put it in my laptop, then I could put it in this app and slow it down by percentages to really hone in. So what we're performing is as close to the record - with a little freedom to improv in some solos - but certain solos I made sure to get note for note. If it's something really memorable or melodic, something that really sticks in your head... Like, Peace Sells I will do all Chris Poland's solos on that note for note. You know you can always expect that in an encore at a show, but some of the other solos we had a little fun with but it's a pretty accurate rendering, as they say."In the full interview Jeff talks more about what to expect, his time with Megadeth and memories of recording So Far, So Good, So What, the other members of the band and how faithfully the old songs are recreated, Mustaine's recent claims that none of the other members aside from Marty Friedman have done anything with their lives, his other musical projects, a possible future collaboration with Ellefson and more.

Interview by Kris PetersMegadeth are one of the few bands in the world - of any genre - that need no introduction. For four decades they have been at the forefront of the metal landscape, with their most recent album The Sick, The Dying and The Dead their highest selling to date. Whereas most bands plateau somewhat or more often decline in the back end of their career Megadeth are doing the exact opposite.Which makes frontman Dave Mustaine one happy camper. Now, after nearly eight years, Megadeth are poised to return to Australia as part of Knotfest from March 24 to 26, with two side shows also scheduled for Adelaide and Melbourne.Which makes Mustaine even happier.HEAVY sat down for an awesome chat with the great man earlier this morning for a frank and open discussion about anything and everything. One of the topics of conversation was what has changed with Megadeth since their last venture Down Under in 2015."Well, ALOT," he laughed. "We've had some lineup changes and every time we do that the person that came in was better. When we parted ways with the drummer before Dirk (Verbeuren) - it was the person before Chris Adler, which was Shawn Drover - we tried to get the Rust In Peace line-up back together but it didn't work because Nick (Menza) went off one way and we went off the other. We contacted Adler and asked if he would play on the record and maybe contact Nick again and have him tour with us because he couldn't really do the record. That didn't work out either, so we had Chris do the record and stay, and while we were doing that Chris and his band parted ways and we didn't know if Chris was going to stay with us or stay with them. Of course, we wanted him to stay with Lamb Of God and I'm sad that he left and there's any kind of distance between the family. I do think that Art (Cruz) is an amazing drummer and then after that Chris Adler recommended Dirk, and Dirk is - in my mind - the best drummer we've had since Gar Samuelson. He's a big fan of Gar, and that is the power that drives Megadeth. Jazz metal, not rock metal. Nick was a super talented and powerful drummer and he fortunately was able to do a lot of those jazz hooks too, so we almost had that magic that we did when Gar was there. But we definitely had something which Gar did not, which was the power that Nick Menza possessed. Same thing can go down the line with the bass playing. (Dave) Ellefson was in the band, then was out. James (LoMenzo) came in, he was out. Ellefson came back because the Drover brothers kept pressuring me to do this, get Ellefson back. He came in and we had that weird shit that happened. I had Steve Di Giorgio come in and record the record and James is back and I love that he's back. The singing is fabulous on stage. He actually can sing really well, so he helps encourage me to sing. And then Kiko (Loureiro, guitars) as you know... I parted ways with Chris Broderick - I mean where do you go from having Marty Friedman and Chris Poland and it's time to make a guitar player change again? So Kiko, I saw a video on line of Kiko actually being put head to head against Chris Broderick, someone made a video of that, and I watched it and I went fuck I gotta get in touch with this guy. The funny thing is that when I contacted him he said that he had been talking to Ellefson, so when I talked to Ellefson the next time I said what the fucks wrong with you, man? Why didn't you tell me you know this guy(laughs)? So that was a great addition to the band. Kiko and James play really well together and Kiko and Dirk have an amazing ability to play those crazy riffs together. Of course, we can always be better, so we all go into the jam room every day and try and work on little bits and pieces of a song and our record producer is out with us on the road as our music director keeping our chops up."In the full interview, Dave talks about being part of Knotfest, the two sideshows and how they will differ from the festival shows, forty years in the music industry, listening to your body when it comes to performing, the increasing difficulty in coming up with a set list to keep fans happy, the early days of Megadeth and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, becoming more understanding of your environment with experience, musical trends and how they have affected Megadeth, what he hopes to leave as the band's musical legacy, the top three Commandments of Metal and more.

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2022 33:57

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with musician and founding member/keyboardist for the progressive rock band Umphrey's McGee, Joel Cummins. Joel's keyboard wizardry is widely established throughout the music world. Beyond his heralded work with the increasingly popular, must-see live act that is Umphrey's McGee, Joel has released impressive solo work and plays in bands with the likes of Nels Cline, Mike Watt, Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction, and Chris Poland of Megadeth. Beyond that, he has collaborated with such acclaimed artists as Huey Lewis, Joshua Redman, Mavis Staples, Phil Lesh, Buddy Guy, Thundercat, A$AP Ferg, Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, Warren Haynes, Bob Weir, and Les Claypool. Throughout their now twenty-four year career, Umphrey's McGee has slowly but surely become one of America's most crowd pleasing live acts. The band has been completely DIY their entire existence and have been extremely successful at it without any major label or management influence. While grouped within the genre, Umphrey's McGee doesn't fit a traditional "jamband" mold. With elements of prog and classic rock, and even heavy metal, influencing their sound and live performances, Umphrey's McGee is a unique and captivating beast of band, one which has fostered legions of hardcore fans and has propelled to the top of festival bills, annual multi-night stands at venues such as Red Rocks and the Beacon Theater, and an extremely successful touring career. Their latest album, Asking For a Friend, — the focus of this episode — is the band's fourteenth studio effort and it might be their most emotionally charged and powerful yet. The reason for this heightened potency is pandemic related. Recorded over the course of three sessions at three different studios during the pandemic, Asking For A Friend represents a new approach for Umphrey's McGee. With less pressure to finish the album quickly due to the industry-wide pause caused by the pandemic, the band was able to spend more time perfecting each track. In this episode host Michael Shields and Joel Cummins discuss the fascinating way Asking For a Friend was recorded amid the pandemic while expounding upon the band's songwriting process in general. They talk about the lyrical themes of the album, what it has been like adding the music from Asking For a Friend into their live repertoire, and a great deal more!Grab the vinyl or a digital copy of Asking For a Friend here! New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Tras la demos, Burn The Priest grabó sendos álbumes compartidos con Zed y Agents Of Satan. Now you've got something to die for». Otros grupos serán: Atreyu, In This Moment, 3 Inches of Blood, Hatebreed, Chimaira, Shadows Fall, y Winds of Plague.

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n' heavy and the 90s alternative n' grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we've created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover all 3 categories and even some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the hard-rockin' 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and some bands simply got caught in the middle. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from and enjoy some music from The Inbetweeners! Songs this week include:Atomic Opera – “Joy Ride” from For Madmen Only (1994)Crimson Glory – “Dance With Fire” from Strange And Beautiful (1991)King Of Kings – “Open Your Arms” from Who's Your Guru? (1992)The Awful Truth – “Circle” from The Awful Truth (1989)Damn The Machine – “Lonesome God” from Damn The Machine (1993)Mind Over Four – “12 Days Of Wind” from The Goddess (1990)Saigon Kick – “Torture” from Water (1994)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

REDEMPTION is one of the leading progressive metal bands in the world today. Formed in Los Angeles, California in 2000 by guitarist / keyboardist / songwriter Nicolas van Dyk, the band features iconic vocalist Tom S. Englund of Evergrey, the phenomenal rhythm section of Chris Quirarte (drums) and Sean Andrews (bass), keyboard phenom Vikram Shankar, and additional guitar work from the legendary Chris Poland (Megadeth, OHM) and Simone Mularoni (DGM). First gaining notoriety with their sophomore release, 2005’s 'The Fullness Of Time' (which featured former vocalist Ray Alder of Fates Warning), the band released their third CD, 'The Origins Of Ruin', in 2007 and followed with a tour of North America in support of progressive metal icons Dream Theater. They followed this up with a live CD/DVD of their performance at the ProgPower USA festival, 'Frozen In The Moment', in 2008. In 2009 they released 'Snowfall On Judgment Day' (which included a guest vocal performance from James LaBrie of Dream Theater), followed by 2011’s 'This Mortal Coil', after which they toured Europe for the first time and released their second live CD/DVD, 'Live From The Pit', in 2013. 2016 saw REDEMPTION deliver 'The Art Of Loss', which features not only Simone Mularoni and Chris Poland but also guitarists Marty Friedman and Chris Broderick, as well as guest performance from John Bush of Armored Saint/ex-Anthrax. Following the departure of Alder in early 2017, the band joined forces with the formidable voice of Tom S. Englund, and released its seventh studio CD, 'Long Night’s Journey Into Day', in 2018, again with Poland and Mularoni. Later that same year, the band - with live guest appearances by Mularoni, Poland and Ray Alder - headlined the 2018 edition of the ProgPower USA festival, recording the performance with multiple cameras under the direction of Patric Ullaeus (known for his videos for Evergrey, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amaranthe and others). With REDEMPTION newly signed to AFM Records, the live package is being released as 'Alive In Color', as BluRay/2-CD and DVD/2-CD sets (both including Redemption’s live performance of the Megadeth classic 'Peace Sells' featuring Poland, believed to be the first time he performed that on stage in over 20 years). Soon thereafter, REDEMPTION will return to the studio to begin work on its 8th studio CD, which will come from AFM sometime in 2021.

WARBRINGER vocalist John Kevill and drummer Carlos Cruz join Speak N’ Destroy for our 50th (!) episode. The duo share a dense knowledge and passion for the genre and dive in here on the chemistry, serendipity, and near scientific structure that makes Metallica and bands like Slayer, Bathory, and Kreator, so great. It's a deep conversation about art vs. craft; the accidental brilliance born of limited resources; plus, the stories about how each of them discovered and became involved in heavy music in the first place. We rank the first five Metallica albums and talk about all of the ways Warbringer has drawn inspiration from Metallica as the Neo-thrash survivors have created six well-received albums, including their latest, Weapons of Tomorrow. Carlos is the former drummer for the band Hexen, filled in for his friends in Power Trip, and replaced the late Nick Menza in OHM, the instrumental rock/jazz fusion trio led by Chris Poland, the lead guitar player on the first two Megadeth albums. But Who's Buying?. Neste episódio: Megadeth, Paul McCartney, Left Hand e Chris Poland.

Whether it's the amazing and diverse Return To Metalopolis album, the classic Megadeth albums, or his fusion project OHM, Chris Poland can be counted on to deliver amazing guitar work. But his songwriting should be highlighted as much as his fretboard skills. "The Fall Of Babylon" is but one great example of the songwriting prowess Chris possesses. While Metal may be in his past and Fusion is where he is at (and always has been), all of his music is heavy in so many ways. You have the Megadeth albums, but you should also have Return To Metalopolis and the OHM album Circus Of Sound. Chris was very open in our discussion of his life in music. What was to be a 30 minute conversation ended up lasting about an hour. Not surprising, since Chris has had many musical endeavors. He's covered alot of ground since the '70s, in many ways coming full circle...from The New Yorkers to OHM. ***UPDATE*** The following message is from Chris regarding our conversation about the song "The Fall Of Babylon." > Email your feedback to: blacknightmeditations@msn.com BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. Healthy communities grow by leveraging intellectual capital to drive economic development while protecting cultural heritage. In the San Francisco Bay Area, as in other regions where earthquakes occur, success depends in part on the ability to rebound from major earthquakes. But action plans for reducing losses have stalled. Chris Poland will present the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association's (SPUR) Resilient City Initiative. This Initiative is an effort to avoid post-Katrina-type problems by defining the seismic hazards and response performance goals for San Francisco in terms that everyone can understand. SPUR's path and plans will improve San Francisco's ability to recover and are a guide for other cities preparing to cope with disasters.
