After facing cancer and surviving a massive “widow maker” heart attack, he began reading the Bible seriously for the first time. As someone trained as a lawyer, Matthew approached Scripture through investigation, evidence, and comparison—reading across multiple Bible translations and Christian traditions. The conversation explores Matthew's path from skepticism to faith, including how books like The Case for Christ and Evidence That Demands a Verdict helped him examine whether Christianity is true. Matthew explains why he believes Christians must be grounded not only in the goodness of Christianity, but in the truth of Christianity.TS and Matthew also discuss Matthew's book, Canon Crossfire, which addresses questions surrounding the Old Testament canon, the differences between Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Ethiopian, and other biblical traditions, and why simplistic answers about the canon can create problems when examined historically.A major theme of the episode is the importance of honest investigation. Matthew encourages believers, students, pastors, and scholars to look carefully at the evidence, especially when discussing disputed books such as 2 Maccabees and the broader historical development of the Bible. In This EpisodeTS and Matthew discuss:Matthew's personal testimony and health crisisHow reading the Bible changed his lifeWhy Christianity's truth claims matterThe role of apologetics in strengthening faithThe historical complexity of the biblical canonDifferences among Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Ethiopian, and Syriac canonsAthanasius and the early recognition of the New Testament writingsWhy Christians should avoid shallow answers when defending ScriptureMatthew's book Canon CrossfireWhere listeners can find Matthew's workGuest ResourceLearn more about Matthew Mark McWhorter and his book at:CanonCrossfire.comMatthew also mentions that his book is available in multiple formats, including print, ebook, audiobook, large print, and free copies for seminarians.Mentioned in this episode:TUVU - God Centered Concept Academy

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by two of the best experts on the Canon of the Bible, my friends Matthew Mark McWhorter and Gary Michuta. Together, we'll dig into exactly why Protestant Bibles are smaller than Catholic Bibles – what happened to the missing books and the unfounded theories that led to them being removed. We look at modern evidence which proves that the Catholic canon of Scripture was what Jesus and the apostles were reading, that it contains more intact and reliable versions of Scripture, and that Jerome's famous thesis – which led Martin Luther to REMOVE books from the Bible – is historically false, and has been proven so! Matthew McWhorter From Courtroom to Conversion: A Lawyer's Journey from Skeptic to Believer Matthew McWhorter is a retired corporate attorney whose life was radically transformed by a near-death experience, a box of Bibles, and the relentless grace of God. Once an atheist and legal skeptic, McWhorter faced a medical crisis that brought him to the edge of eternity. In recovery, one thought haunted him: “I've never read the books I was named after.” That question launched a journey that would change everything. What began as a skeptical, courtroom-style investigation into the foundations of Christianity became a full-blown conversion. McWhorter didn't come to faith through emotion—he came through evidence. Applying his legal training to the question of biblical canon, he uncovered a provocative truth: the same standards Protestants use to defend the New Testament also affirm the so-called Catholic “Apocrypha.” His debut book, Canon Crossfire: Does the Protestant Bible Blow Up the Case for Christianity? is a bold, meticulously researched exploration of the biblical canon. McWhorter doesn't argue for inspiration—he argues for consistency. And he challenges readers to consider whether rejecting the Apocrypha might actually weaken the very case for Christ's resurrection. Today, Matthew McWhorter is a passionate advocate for biblical literacy, spiritual courage, and intellectual honesty. He speaks to truth-seekers, skeptics, and believers alike—especially those wrestling with the reliability of Scripture in a post-Christian culture. His message is clear: we are losing the American Church not because the world is too dark, but because the Church has dimmed its own light. All proceeds from his writing are donated. This is not marketing—it's mission.
ARE EVANGELICALS WORKING FROM AN INCOMPLETE BIBLE? That's what my 1pm guest says. He's a former atheist who decided to do some deep digging that led him to be a believer. His book Canon Crossfire does a deep dive into what he says is missing from Protestant Bibles: the Books of the Apocrypha. Find his book here. Matthew McWhorter joins me at 1 to discuss.
Sam Harris speaks with John McWhorter about language, ideology, and moral certainty. They discuss the rise and persistence of "wokeness" and DEI, the legacy of George Floyd's death, the role of social media in amplifying moral panic, how identity shapes perceptions of Israel-Palestine, the linguistics of Donald Trump, the rise of casual speech, conspiracy thinking, positions McWhorter has reconsidered, and other topics. As millions of Americans look for ways to deepen their faith in the New Year, our next guest brings a perspective you don't often hear — especially from someone with his background. Matthew Mark McWhorter, a retired corporate attorney and once a committed atheist, found himself in a severe health crisis that pushed him to investigate the Christian faith with the same intensity he once brought to the courtroom. That journey led him to study every major Bible translation and the lesser known writings many believers have never encountered. He says these so‑called "missing books" helped him, as an attorney, build a stronger, evidence‑based case for Christ. Today, Matthew is a Christian author with a depth of scriptural and historical knowledge that is truly uncommon. His book Canon Crossfire hit #1 on Amazon over Black Friday. He offers a rare opportunity for audiences to explore the early Apostolic writings, understand the full historical context of Jesus Christ, and rediscover the foundations of the Christian faith through a wider lens. His insight is both intellectually rigorous and spiritually compelling — and he's here to help us start the New Year with a deeper, richer understanding of what we believe.

Matthew McWhorter, author of Canon Crossfire, examines the escalating global persecution of Christians, from bans on public prayer in Quebec to arrests for silent intercession in the UK and France, and the deadly violence facing believers in Nigeria. Combining legal insight with biblical clarity, he warns that governments are increasingly codifying the suppression of faith—undermining conscience, free speech, and the foundations of liberty itself. n this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Matthew Mark McWhorter, a high-powered, high-profile corporate lawyer who turned his skills in the courtroom towards the Bible and Christianity. After a life-changing experience made him consider Christianity, McWhorter set out to research the evidence for belief in Jesus. He encountered the Bible and quickly realized that not all Christians believed in the same canon of Scripture – so which one is right. In this episode, we dive deeply into this exact topic and unpack why McWhorter thinks that a Protestant reliance on the *wrong* books of the Bible actually undermines their complete case for Christianity – and why Protestants should seriously rethink their "smaller" Bibles. For more from Matthew McWhorter including his wonderful book Canon Crossfire please visit his website.Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. Many young adults express a desire to save, but it'suncertain whether they are actually doing so. A survey commissioned byfinancial software firm Intuit in April found that 59% of Americans aged 18 to25 prioritize having a well-funded savings account. However, many arestruggling to achieve this goal. Among Gen Z adults aged 18 to 27 in the U.S.,only 15% regularly set aside a portion of their paycheck for savings, accordingto a Bank of America survey released last year. Retired attorney and author Matthew McWhorter joins the program to discuss his new book, Canon Crossfire, which documents his investigation into the hidden biblical writings. Approaching the topic like a legal case, McWhorter applies an unbiased, evidence-based analysis of the Christian biblical canon—an inquiry that began in skepticism and led to an unexpected conversion.Written for critical thinkers, theology enthusiasts, skeptics, and believers alike, Canon Crossfire explores a profound question: What if the “Apocrypha” were part of the original Apostolic deposit—and what if rejecting them undermines the very foundation Protestants use to defend the resurrection of Christ? As part of this inquiry, McWhorter presents the world's first complete survey of ALL the possible New Testament references and “citation evidence” from the early Church – every single statement made by Christians in the first 450 years about these books. These are all sorted, organized and presented in the manner that makes the most sense for someone who actually wants to read them, rather than just read about them.Learn more at https://canoncrossfire.com/See exclusives and more at https://SarahWestall.Substack.com
What if the Bible you've been reading your whole life is missing critical pieces? What if ancient texts once taught by the Apostles were quietly removed, sidelined, or forgotten? Today, we're diving into a spiritual mystery that's rocked the faith of skeptics and believers alike. Our guest is Matthew McWhorter—a successful attorney, former atheist, and author of Canon Crossfire. When faced with a life-threatening health crisis, Matthew didn't turn to theology—he turned to evidence. What began as an attempt to disprove Christianity became a legal-style investigation into the historical record of Scripture. And what he found will surprise you. From Susanna to Baruch, Wisdom of Solomon to 1 Enoch, these ancient texts were once embraced by early Christians and Jews, even taught by the Apostles themselves. So why were they removed? Who decided what stayed and what was cast out? And what does that mean for our understanding of Jesus, prophecy, and the spiritual war still raging today? Matthew McWhorter joins us to unpack the missing books, the canon controversy, and why he believes every seeker should read what was left out. This isn't just theology—it's a spiritual thriller. Stay tuned. You're about to hear the case for Christianity like you've never heard it before.
Retired attorney and author Matthew McWhorter joins the program to discuss his new book, Canon Crossfire, which documents his investigation into the hidden biblical writings.Approaching the topic like a legal case, McWhorter applies an unbiased, evidence-based analysis of the Christian biblical canon—an inquiry that began in skepticism and led to an unexpected conversion.Written for critical thinkers, theology enthusiasts, skeptics, and believers alike, Canon Crossfire explores a profound question:What if the “Apocrypha” were part of the original Apostolic deposit—and what if rejecting them undermines the very foundation Protestants use to defend the resurrection of Christ? As part of this inquiry, McWhorter presents the world's first complete survey of ALL the possible New Testament references and “citation evidence” from the early Church – every single statement made by Christians in the first 450 years about these books. These are all sorted, organized and presented in the manner that makes the most sense for someone who actually wants to read them, rather than just read about them.Learn more at https://canoncrossfire.com/Offers and links mentioned in the program:See exclusives and more at https://SarahWestall.Substack.comRelief band: For 20% off your order, head to https://Reliefband.com and use code SARAH.Purchase the most effective weight peptide available, Next Generation GLP-1 Retatrutide - use code Sarah to save 15%: https://www.limitlesslifenootropics.com/product/retatrutide-ha/?ref=vbWRE3JSee the peptide guide for the most effective weight loss and muscle preservation at https://sarahwestall.substack.com/p/the-ultimate-peptide-guide-for-weightCopyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. How should one live? What should one do? And what do these questions have to do with being a good person? In Unbecoming Persons: The Rise and Demine of the Modern Moral Self (University of Chicago Press, 2025), Ladelle McWhorter reorients these questions through a genealogy of the concept of personhood. That genealogy is in the service of showing us not only that personhood is historically contingent, but that it is also optional. In unbecoming persons, we can feel relief, vital belonging, and exhilaration. We can also embrace an ethos of active belonging, a mode of living that eschews the trappings of personhood for the possibilities of life together. Learn more about your ad choices. When Stuart McWhorter gets introduced on stage, at some point he feels the need to cut off the emcee.
