Do your children spend a lot of time looking at their phones or tablets? Do they get upset if you ask them to take a break from their technology? In today's interview, child psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Dunckley introduces us to a new syndrome called Electronic Screen Syndrome, which has profound and far-reaching effects on children's brains. Tune in as she discusses the findings from her book “Reset Your Child's Brain: A Four-Week Plan to End Meltdowns, Raise Grades, and Boost Social Skills by Reversing the Effects of Electronic Screen Time.”  She'll talk about the wide variety of psychiatric, neurological, and behavioral disorders exacerbated or created by screen time and also outline how to successfully implement an “electronic fast,” which has had proven to be successful in hundreds of her patients. Dr. Victoria L. Dunckley is an award-winning integrative child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist, author, and speaker with a focus on addressing modern-day environmental factors to optimize mental health and minimize the need for psychotropic medication.  In response to an overwhelming need, Dr. Dunckley developed “Save Your Child's Brain” in 2010 to help parents reverse the overstimulating effects of electronics' use on children's mood, attention, sleep, and behavior. This is described in her book, “Reset Your Child's Brain.”  As one of only a handful of tech addiction specialists in the US, she's considered a leading expert on the effects of interactive screen-time on brain health and development. Info: www.DrDunckley.com and www.ResetYourChildsBrain.com

After reading both Reset Your Child's Brain by Victoria L. Dunckley, MD and Glow Kids by Nicholas Kardaras, Ph.D.  we discuss the impact of screen time on our own children as well as the concept and the practicality of a 3 week "reset" as recommended by Dr. Dunckley.   In our discovery, our kids are being stimulated at a rate unlike any other generation.  The gaming industry has put the R&D into keeping our kids hooked on screens.  However, gaming isn't the only industry competing for our kids time.  Can we pull our kids off?  How much time is too much time.  A child's dopamine levels are incredibly high when immersed in an active screen.  Is this over stimulation sacrificing relationships?  Join us as we talk through both books, the over arching concept and perhaps one of the greatest challenges parents have with getting their kids to look up.  additional resources are available on finding-moments.com/library

Lori Oberman, MA MFT joins the show for a fun conversation about a serious subject: social media addiction. She offers insights and helpful tools that may benefit both teens and adults.  What are the signs that addiction is a problem? Why is this growing trend getting worse and yes, it seems the U.S. is behind on addressing the reality of the situation.  In this conversation we talk about limiting screen time, is your device interferring with your sex life and other topics. Not found in this conversation but a reminder: people are actually dropping dead in cyber cafes in other parts of the world. Risking physical health in exchange for that sought after screen time for gaming or social media. The long term affects on our society are still unknown. Some of the books Lori recommends are Glow Kids by Nicholas Kardaras, PhD and Reset Your Child's Brain by Victoria L. Dunckley, M.D. To see Lori and the books she is recommending check Instagram https://instagram.com/p/Bvby5DvnGg1/  Lori can be found at www.lorioberman.com. Sheila and Maria discuss the use of technology and screen-time in the home including studies on the impact of these behaviors on our developing children and drawing on decades of experience observing and working with families as they have navigated these types of decisions.   "So your kids must love the iPad?" I asked Mr. Steve Jobs, trying to change the subject, the company's first tablet was just hitting the shelves. "They haven't used it," he told me "we limit how much technology our kids use at home." - New York Times article, September 2014, by Nick Bilton   Revisiting the theme of less-is-more, we believe that the same concept applies when it comes to screen time for our families. The evidence suggests that an increased use of technology is changing the way our children are wired to think, it is affecting their focus and contributing to an increase in emotional and behavioral issues. But it is not just these things that cause us to desire less technology in our families lives, we also have to consider the tradeoffs, what technology is taking away from them: time to play, explore the outdoors, be creative, and be in their bodies, activities which are all vitally important for our children.   Resources From This Episode The Pediatric Academic Society Study, 2017: http://www.aappublications.org/news/2017/05/04/PASScreenTime050417 U.S. National Survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 2010: https://www.kff.org/other/event/generation-m2-media-in-the-lives-of/ Marie Winn, The Plug-In Drug: https://www.amazon.com/Plug-Drug-Television-Computers-Family/dp/0142001082 Jane M. About the book: A no-cost, nonpharmaceutical treatment plan for children with behavioral and mental health challenges. Increasing numbers of parents grapple with children who are acting out without obvious reason. Revved up and irritable, many of these children are diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar illness, autism, or other disorders but don’t respond well to treatment. They are then medicated, often with poor results and unwanted side effects. Based on emerging scientific research and extensive clinical experience, integrative child psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Dunckley has pioneered a four-week program to treat the frequent underlying cause, Electronic Screen Syndrome (ESS). Dr. Dunckley has found that everyday use of interactive screen devices — such as computers, video games, smartphones, and tablets — can easily overstimulate a child’s nervous system, triggering a variety of stubborn symptoms. In contrast, she’s discovered that a strict electronic fast single-handedly improves mood, focus, sleep, and behavior, regardless of the child’s diagnosis. Offered now in this book, this simple intervention can produce a life-changing shift in brain function — all without cost or medication. Dr. Dunckley provides hope for parents who feel that their child has been misdiagnosed or inappropriately medicated, by presenting an alternative explanation for their child’s difficulties and a concrete plan for treating them. About the author: Victoria L. Dunckley, M.D., author of “Reset Your Child’s Brain,” is an award-winning integrative child psychiatrist who specializes in children with complex or treatment-resistant mental health conditions. By combining conventional and complementary methods with lifestyle interventions, she aims to optimize treatment while minimizing the need for psychotropic medication. She consults regularly with schools, multi-disciplinary treatment teams, and the courts, and is a sought-after expert regarding the physiological impact of screen-time on the developing nervous system. A regular speaker for parents’ groups and health clinicians, she is also a frequent media contributor for outlets such as the Today show, NBC National News, and the Investigation Discovery channel. Clinically, she divides her practice between the private and public sectors in Los Angeles. After studying biology at the University of California San Diego, Dr. Dunckley pursued her medical training at Albany Medical College in New York, then returned to the west coast for her psychiatric residency and child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship at U.C. Irvine’s Neuropsychiatric Center. She’s since worked in a variety of community mental health settings including residential treatment centers, clinics catering to adoptive, foster, and transitional age youths, and Regional Centers serving clients with neurodevelopmental disabilities. In her private practice she has extensive experience treating tics & Tourette Syndrome, ADHD, bipolar disorder, attachment disorder, and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Whether in the private or public setting, she’s known for going the extra mile to help each patient achieve his or her maximum potential. Out of an overwhelming need, Dr. Dunckley developed the Save Your Child’s Brain program in 2010 to offer the general public the pioneering program she was using with her patients to address overstimulation from screen-time, a phenomenon she coined “Electronic Screen Syndrome.” Now called the Reset Program, she has utilized this program to help more than 500 children, teens, and young adults who weren’t responding to conventional treatment alone. In recent years Dr. Dunckley began studying the interface between integrative medicine and psychiatry more formally, and in 2012 became board-certified by the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. She has been a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for more than thirteen years. The winner of numerous awards from Vitals.com, she was also named one of America’s Top Psychiatrists by the Consumer’s Research Council of America.
