We've been urged to include plenty of dietary fiber in our daily routines, fibers that come from vegetables, legumes, grains and other plant sources. But there is an animal-sourced fiber that has nearly disappeared from the modern human diet: hyaluronic acid. Hyluronic acid has nearly disappeared from the diet because it is primarily sourced from animal products, especially organ meats like brain, skin, and tongue. But hyaluronic acid is a fiber crucial for the health of many human organs: skin, joints, uterus, cervix, vagina, arteries. It is also a fiber with significant benefits on the gastrointestinal microbiome that, in turn, yields substantial benefits via microbial metabolites. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let's discuss the role of this important fiber and how to bring it back into your lifestyle to obtain its many benefits._________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
LDL cholesterol, apoprotein B, saturated fat, TMAO, statin cholesterol drugs: Over the last 40 years, we have been inundated with misguided advice on how to reduce your risk for coronary heart disease, i.e., risk for such things as heart attack, need for heart procedures such as stent implantation or bypass surgery, or sudden cardiac death, serious and often life-threatening events. Has it worked? 80 million Americans now take statin drugs to reduce cholesterol yet there has been no meaningful reduction in such events and, in fact, I'll bet some of your local hospitals have added multi-million dollar wings for cardiac care, the number one moneymaker for hospitals and healthcare. The tragedy of all this is that the focus on issues like cholesterol have taken everyone's focus off the REAL causes of heart disease that are, in reality, easy to identify and manage. And it involves no pharmaceuticals, no restriction of dietary fat, but draws from a handful of common sense and natural strategies that, time and again, have allowed people to stop or even reverse coronary atherosclerosis. _________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
Go to any supermarket and you will see the impressive variety of products in the dairy aisle labeled "yogurt." You have a mindboggling collection of choices: non-fat, low-fat, full-fat, flavored, unflavored. Single-serve cartons, quart containers, squeezable tubes, jars. Will consuming any of these products change your life in any significant way? Will you be heathier, have better bowel health, skin health, metabolic health, mental health? Let's discuss why, no, you will not experience any dramatic life-altering effects from consuming these products. They may be tasty, but they will not change your life in any meaningful way. But, by modifying what we call yogurt, you CAN create something that looks and smells like yogurt but DOES provide substantial life- and health-changing effects. __________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

The practice of immersing your body in ice water is growing in popularity based on claims of improved mood and well-being, muscle recovery after exercise, even longevity. But this ignores the well-established fact that sudden cardiac death is a real risk due to coronary spasm, causing heart attack, and unstable heart rhythms due to a situation called autonomic conflict. There are a growing number of lawsuits that have been filed for the many sudden cardiac deaths that have occurred. So let's discuss what we know about this concept of cold water immersion and why it is such a dangerous practice. • Immersion in water around 15°C/60°F triggers dangerous physiological responses• Cold exposure causes coronary arteries to spasm, potentially leading to heart attack• Most adults have some degree of endothelial dysfunction, making them vulnerable• "Autonomic conflict" occurs when both nervous system branches activate simultaneously• Multiple lawsuits have been filed over deaths from ice baths and polar plunges• Safer alternatives exist for achieving the claimed benefits of cold exposure• Cold showering (starting warm and gradually cooling) may offer similar benefits with less risk________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
Over 50% of Americans are, at any one time, trying to lose weight. So it's understandable that the GLP-1 agonist drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro have become so popular, given their spectacular upfront results. Others have used reduced calorie diets in their various forms: counting points, assigning foods red, yellow, or green lights, meal replacement products, etc. Or bariatric procedures like lap-band, jejunoileal bypass, or gastric bypass. But there is a lot that people are not told about these methods. The near-term prospect of losing weight is so enticing to people and so profitable to doctors, the healthcare system, and the pharmaceutical industry that is simply no incentive to tell you the full story. So let me fill you in on the real story, the full details about why cutting calories, regardless of the form it takes, can be so dangerous.
I first met Dr. Eric Westman at a low-carbohydrate meeting a number of years ago where he discussed an extremely important and insightful human clinical trial he had conducted in which he counseled participants with type 2 diabetes to follow a very low-carbohydrate, essentially ketogenic, diet. He was almost prohibited from conducted the study because some colleagues felt it was too dangerous. Nonetheless, the study was completed and demonstrated that type 2 diabetic participants no longer needed insulin and most diabetes drugs while achieving improved blood glucose measures by engaging in a lifestyle that was the direct opposite of conventional dietary advice. As groundbreaking as this study was for its time, it is simply not talked about enough, as it is one of the most important pieces of evidence that validates the idea that limiting carbohydrates and sugars, not fats or saturated fats, is key to, in this case, improving diabetes control, even helping make many people non-diabetic. I therefore thought it would be a good idea to ask Dr. Westman to describe his rationale for the study, discuss the results, and share the lessons he has learned since then. We all recognize that American healthcare is a badly broken system. Wildly overpriced, exploitative, with a focus on pharmaceuticals and medical procedures to the exclusion of basic issues such as nutrition, the role of nutrients, and the microbiome. Can we expect doctors, healthcare executives, pharma or medical device executives to find better solutions? I highly doubt it. One of the problems plaguing conventional delivery of healthcare is that doctors lack the time, knowledge, and frankly the interest in spending more time with their patients, hearing about their issues, then creating solutions that address their unique concerns. Enter the age of health coaches. A number of years ago, when I first heard about this phenomenon, of heath coaches playing a role in the delivery of health, I was skeptical. But over the past decade, as I've worked with health coaches, witnessed what they could accomplish, and heard plenty of positive feedback from the public engaging their services, my opinions about health coaching has completely changed. I now see them as part of the engine that will drive improvements in healthcare. I therefore tracked down Sandra Scheinbaum, a Phd clinical psychologist who counseled patients for many years but then diverted her career into functional medicine and health coaching, bringing the unique insights into human behavior and emotions that came from decades of practicing clinical psychology, now applied to health coaching. Dr. Scheinbaum founded the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy that educates and trains people in acquiring the skills and knowledge to practice as a health coach. She is also author of several books including Functional Medicine Coaching: Stories from the Movement That's Transforming Healthcare, and her newest book, Your Health Coach Will See You Now available in April 2025 on Amazon and selected bookstores. In this episode of Defiant Health, Dr. Scheinbaum recounts how she made this change in direction and what she foresees for the future of this important phenomenon of health coaching. For more information:FunctionalMedicineCoaching.org___________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go Support the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Over the past decade, most of us have converted our home lighting to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, as they save a significant amount of energy, requiring 75-90% less energy than older incandescent lights. Personally, I converted the 50 or lightbulbs in my house to nearly all LEDs.Most current LEDs emit, of course, visible light. But they also emit a significant amount of blue light and very little red and infrared (IR), in contrast to old-fashioned incandescent bulbs that emit some blue and a lot of red and IR. Remember when you had to change an incandescent bulb when it died? If you tried to unscrew it, it could burn your hand because the bulb was extremely hot. That's the effect of red and IR that generates heat. Change a LED bulb and you can do so immediately, as the bulb is cool, even after dying just moments earlier. This is due to the absence of significant amounts of red and IR.While well-intended to save energy, it is now becoming clear that the wholesale conversion to blue-emitting LED lighting has been exerting adverse health effects, especially visual. So let's begin talking about the role of light, specifically blue wavelengths in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, then about the role of red and IR in a future episode. _______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
I've touched on the topic of endotoxemia in past episodes of the Defiant Health podcast. In this episode, let's dive deeper into this topic that is absolutely crucial to understanding and managing SO many aspects of health, from subduing anxiety and panic, to depressive, to joint pain and skin rashes, to gastrointestinal conditions, even weight management. What is endotoxemia? Fecal microbes, so-called Gram-negative species because of the way these microbes take up stain for examination under a microscope, species such as E. coli and Salmonella, have something called lipopolysaccharide endotoxin in their cells walls. Other species, so-called Gram positive species such as Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus, that stain in a different manner, have something called lipoteichoic acid in their cell walls. When these microbes die, both Gram-negative and Gram-positive, these toxic factors are released into the intestines. If these fecal microbes are confined to the colon, where they belong, a section of GI tract adapted to their presence, the entry of these toxic components are limited and current evidence is unclear in how importat this process is. The real trouble occurs, however, when fecal microbes have invaded the 24-feet of small intestine, a process we label small intetinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, because the small intestine—the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum are not well-adapted to the invasion of fecal species. Here, they die, release their toxic components, which then enter the bloodstream, the process labeled endotoxemia. People with SIBO therefore have high blood levels, typically 200-400% higher, levels of endotoxin. This is how microbes in the GI Tract export their effects to all other parts of the body. So let's discuss this process and how you can take control over it to be be better able to take control over your emotions, mood, sleep, energy, weight, and numerous other aspects of health. _______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Getting ready to sell your home in Salt Lake City? The Stern Team of Omada Real Estate provides us with a 6-week plan to ensure your home sells quickly and for the best price. Debbie and Greg discuss the tips in the context of their home buying experiences.
I've been showing thousands of people how to restore this microbe lost by the majority of modern people, Lactobacillus reuteri. But, of all the spectacular improvements in health we can gain by managing our microbiomes, such as an increase in empathy and generosity, reduction in anxiety and depression, deeper sleep, increased libido, restored youthful musculature and strength, the females in my audience have repeatedly said something like, “Well, that's all well and good, but I'm mostly interested in the skin benefits.” So I've spent a good deal of time, energy, and resources in exploring this question, including performing a small human clinical trial to better understand how and why restoration of L. reuteri, especially when combined with other non-microbial synergistic factors, can restore youthful healthy skin. One issue that has emerged to the forefront in our quest to better under skin health and appearance is the issue of skin pH. We may not think about skin this way, but healthy skin is acidic. The pH of healthy skin in someone not plagued by eczema, acne, rosacea, psoriasis, or other skin conditions is typically around 4.5. Recall that neutral is 7.0 and the blood is mildly alkaline at a pH of 7.4. Unhealthy skin, in contrast, skin with various skin rashes, has a pH of around 5.5—given the logarithmic nature of the pH scale, unhealthy skin is therefore 10-fold less acidic than healthy skin, a huge difference. This difference in pH is a crucial determinant of what you skin looks and feels like, whether you will be prone to these sorts of skin rashes or whether you can enjoy smooth youthful skin. So let's dive into that topic, the importance of managing skin pH._______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

I've spent some time reflecting back on all my years practicing in hospitals, often not sleeping for extended periods, sometimes days, covering hospitals floors and ICUs, resuscitating people who experienced cardiac arrests, taking them to the cath lab to open arteries, but also witnessing people with all sorts of other health conditions: cancers, wound infections, sepsis, delirium, the various stages of dementia, and hundreds of other debilitating disease. I now recognize that, looking back, so many health conditions can be better understood in light of the contribution of the microbiome, i.e., the trillions of microbes occupying the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, the nasal sinuses, the airways, the brain, the prostate, the vagina and uterus, the skin—virtually every part of the human body. We all know about acute bacterial infections. But I'm talking about something different. While microbes exert effects via a number of different routes—think the gut-brain axis, the gut-skin axis, the gut-muscle axis, effects exerted via hormones, inflammatory mediating proteins, and bacterial breakdown products. But beyond this, there is a curious phenomenon in which bacteria and fungi themselves, by a number of means, travel through the body to take up residence and cause trouble. But the “trouble” is not an infection in the conventional sense, but something different, less acute, less urgent, less dramatic, but nonetheless playing a big role in your health. This is the fascinating and scary phenomenon called “translocation,” the topic for this episode of the Defiant Health podcast.
Dr. Izabella Wentz, PharmD, FASCP is an internationally acclaimed thyroid specialist and licensed pharmacist who has dedicated her career to addressing the root causes of autoimmune thyroid disease, fatigue and mystery illnesses after being diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 2009. She is the author of the New York Times best-selling patient guide Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause, the #1 New York Times best-selling protocol-based book Hashimoto's Protocol: A 90-Day Plan for Reversing Thyroid Symptoms and Getting Your Life Back, Hashimoto's Food Pharmacology: Nutrition Protocols and Healing Recipes to Take Charge of Your Thyroid Health, and Adrenal Transformation Protocol: A 4-Week Plan to Release Stress Symptoms and Go from Surviving to Thriving. Together we discuss the experiences that led her to write about Hashimoto's and the adrenal protocol. She highlights the importance of shifting the stress response when supporting adrenals, the value of building resilience over avoiding stressors altogether, and the connection between adrenal dysfunction and thyroid health. Dr. Wentz touches on a myriad of details about HPA Axis Dysfunction, including balancing adrenals, testing options, the connection between adrenal dysfunction and thyroid health, and the success rates she has seen as she has dedicated her work to helping patients heal from Hashimoto's. Those of you who follow my discussions that started with the Wheat Belly series of books already know that there is a long list of reasons why humans made an enormous blunder when we first resorted to the consumption of the seeds of grasses, meaning wheat and related grains. We know this from the anthropological record of human disease, we know this from modern science that has exposed the many problems that arise with their consumption from tooth decay to arthritis. But in my many conversations with people, I find that, because we are all bombarded with the opposite message from TV commercials, media reports, even doctors and dietitians, much of the rationale and science that tells us that wheat consumption is awful for health becomes diluted, or discounted, or ignored. My Wheat Belly arguments, for instance, have been dismissed as just another “gluten-free” message that has no bearing outside of celiac disease. Or that there are bad health consequences of banishing an entire category of food. Or that, if the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans tell us that grains must be a part of the human diet, it must therefore be true. Of course, this is all not true: misinterpretations, misrepresentations, sometimes outright lies, all to prop up continued consumption of a class of “foods” that accelerate disease, aging, and should have no place in the diet of humans. So for this reason, I am going to be guilty of repeating myself and once again reiterating why the arguments against the inclusion of wheat and grains are overwhelming, the health impact of their consumption shockingly awful, and the health benefits of their abandonment huge and life-changing. _______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._______________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
Over 30 years ago, I help set up the first CT heart scan device in Wisconsin, one of the first in the entire midwest. This was so long ago that it was really an electron beam tomogrraphy, or EBT, device that predated the more recently developed CT devices. The point is that these devices acquired images quickly, about 1/10th of a second. This is important because the heart is perpetually in motion through various cycles of its beating rhythm, with motion also provided by breathing. But these devices allowed us to precisely quantify calcium in the coronary arteries of the heart, the arteries that close and cause heart attacks. My friend, Dr. John Rumberger while at the Mayo Clinic, performed studies demonstrating that calcium consistently occupies 20% of total atherosclerotic plaque volume in the coronary arteries. In other words, quantifying calcium in the coronary arteries served as a gauge or dipstick for total atherosclerotic plaque in the heart's arteries. Some years later, cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston, whose name you may recognize from his popular South Beach Diet books, developed a scoring system for coronary calcium, yielding something that came to be called an “Agatston score”: the higher the Agatston or calcium score, the more atherosclerotic plaque was present in the coronary arteries. Subsequent research has shown that the Agatston or calcium score is, by a long stretch, the best predictor of future cardiovascular events, far better than crude measures like cholesterol and these scores, in the 30+ years since my team and I started doing these scans, have become well-established as predictors of cardiovascular events like heart attack. But what to do with the score—can it be stopped? Can it be reduced? That is the topic for this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, highlighting what my colleagues call, even to this day, “optimal medical therapy” that has repeatedly been shown to NOT work and the answers lie elsewhere, answers that I shall discuss. _______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._______________________________________Support the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Over the last 30 years, the question over whether omega-3 fatty acids from fish has been the subject of controversy, swinging from exuberance over its potential benefits to skepticism over whether they provide any benefit at all. It seems that one day we hear that fish oil reduces risk for heart attack, while the next day we hear that there is no such benefit, even harm. We've also been subjected to numerous marketing claims for competing products with claims such as “40 times more potent than fish oil” or “You can't buy this in a health food store” that further muddy the waters. So let's review all that we have learned over the past 3 decades to decipher just what role, if any, omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil should play in your program to regain or maintain magnificent health. We dive into the history and outcomes of landmark studies like GISSI-Prevenzione, OMEGA Remodel, and REDUCE-IT, which have left researchers and medical professionals both excited and perplexed. Discover how high-dose EPA might just be the key to reversing coronary atherosclerosis, as outlined in the EVAPORATE trial. Join us as we dissect the data and reveal why omega-3s are more than just a fleeting trend; they could be a cornerstone of heart health backed by decades of research.Learn about different forms of fish oil supplements, and how the absorption rates can vary, cutting through the marketing jargon that often exaggerates their potency. Personalization is key, and we discuss how the RBC omega-3 index can offer tailored dosing advice. With a recommended daily intake of 3,600 milligrams, omega-3s promise noticeable improvements, but patience is needed as it takes about three months to reach a steady state. Atrial fibrillation, or A fib for short, is the most common heart rhythm issue that plagues people. About 30% of people will experience this rhythm disorder at some time in their lives, an issue that becomes more and more likely as we age. The rhythm is typically experienced as the sudden onset of breathlessness and lightheadedness, and sometimes chest pain, even while you are sitting or relaxing. This is because, with A fib, the heart rate is typically in the range of 150-220 beats per minute, way above the normal resting heart rate of 60-70 beats per minute. It's the result of chaotic electrical signals originating from the atria of the heart, the normally thin-walled sacks at the top of the heart on the right and left side, i.e., the right and left atria. Beyond the symptoms of breathlessness and lightheadedness, A fib puts you at risk for stroke—not mini-strokes, but large catastrophic strokes. This is because there is a passive sack or appendage attached to the side of the left atrium called the left atrial appendage. Because during a bout of A fib, the atria stop their normal contractions in synchrony with the powerful ventricles, the main pumping chambers of the heart, blood stasis or standstill occurs, allowing the formation of blood clots in the left atrial appendage. Should the blood clot fragment or dislodge, it can go to your brain, resulting in a catastrophic stroke. This is why, in conventional cardiac care, blood thinners are administered almost immediately with the onset of A. fib. The management of this abnormal heart rhythm is fraught with difficulties and complications: toxic pharmaceuticals, procedures such as DC cardioversion in which a large and painful electrical shock is delivered with paddles to your chest, and others. So it is a good idea to take steps to avoid ever having this abnormal heart rhythm. Conventional advice typically includes achieving such things as controlling blood sugar and blood pressure with prescription drugs, or losing excess weight. But this leaves out some hugely important strategies that you can readily adopt that reduce your potential for experiencing A fib, as well as numerous other health problems. So that is the topic we consider here in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast.________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go Support the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Sleep issues represent a major struggle for millions of people: too little sleep, trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, early morning awakenings followed by difficulty falling back asleep. Some people complain that, despite having a full night of sleep, they awake feeling like they didn't sleep at all, struggling with sleepiness, fog, and fatigue all through waking hours. There are also known associations of health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and Parkinson's disease with disruptions of sleep. The science that explores the role of gastrointestinal microbes in sleep are yielding new and exciting lessons. Recently, for instance, lack of sleep has been shown to adversely impact the composition of the GI microbiome, i.e., there is a bidirectional cross-talk: the brain communicates with the gut, the gut communicates with the brain in ways that influence sleep. But new observations are also emerging from our fermentation projects, especially our yogurts in which we ferment unique microbial species to very high counts, increasing the number of microbes a hundred, or even a thousand-fold, efforts that are yielding new lessons that have not yet been formally described in human scientific studies. So let's discuss some of these interesting lessons that are emerging involving sleep. ________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

You've likely heard the headlines gushing about the weight loss effects of the GLP-1 agonist class of drugs, agents that go by names like Wegovy, Mounjaro, Rebelsus and others. Doctors are declaring these drugs as breakthroughs or even magical, witnessing the rapid and dramatic weight loss they can achieve. People appear willing to accept the side-effects of nausea, vomiting, even bowel obstruction, a catastrophic complication, or thyroid cancer, or pancreatitis that can irreversibly damage your pancreas and make you a type 1 diabetic. They also accept the costs that vary widely, depending on who dispenses it, but not uncommonly hundreds of dollars, even over a thousand dollars a month. And doctors jump at the chance to prescribe these drugs, as they often have arrangements with the dispensing pharmacy for kickbacks in one form or another. Prescribe the drug, make a lot of money, for many doctors an irresistible temptation. People lose weight and even can become non-type 2 diabetic and modestly reduce risk for heart disease—so what's not to like? Plenty. That is the topic of discussion today on the Defiant Health podcast, a place where you hear ideas you cannot hear anywhere else because we dig deeper, are not swayed by big payoffs, and thumb our nose at conventional wisdom. The GLP-1 agonist drugs are not miraculous, but invite health disaster or hold you hostage for the rest of your life, shelling out money to enrich the pharmaceutical industry and doctors.________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the Show.Books: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
The oral microbiome is second only to the colon in the density of microbes living there. The mouth is really a collection of varied ecosystems that differ in composition. For instance, the microbiome of the teeth is different from that of the tongue that is, in turn, different from the microbiome of the gumline. The oral cavity is therefore teeming with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of species of bacteria, fungi, Archaea, and viruses. It is a virtual tropical jungle of life. But what is especially remarkable is that the oral microbiome is an ecosystem of life that plays a role not just in dental health (cavities, tooth loss, gingivitis, periodontitis, breath odor) but also in contributing to causing diseases in other parts of the body such as cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, reproductive and cognitive health. So, in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let's consider how the oral microbiome contributes to all sorts of health issues. While solutions are still being sorted out, let's discuss at least some of what we know that can be effective in improving the condition of the oral microbiome and thereby hope to have a favorable impact on health elsewhere in the body. ________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the Show.Books: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Despite having written 7 books in the Wheat Belly series pointing out the harms that this “food” has inflicted on people, harms that doctors nearly always misdiagnose as an opportunity to “treat” with pharmaceuticals and procedures, questions and ideas to the contrary continue to crop up. Some of these ideas are simply due to the barrage of advertising that comes from Big Food and Big Agribusiness, industries that continue to make a lot of money by propagating fictitious claims that grains are healthy. Some of it is due to the continued repeated urgings by the U.S. government, insisting that grains should remain a staple of the American diet. Dietitians stick to their argument that all foods fit into a healthy diet, including sugary soft drinks, candy bars, and grains, provided it's all consumed “in moderation” and in the context of a “balanced diet.” And sometimes it's just that some people are looking for novelty, the newest and shiniest thing to titillate their dietary habits. And make no mistake: the grain industry is extremely well funded, keeping many dietitians, nutritionists, publicists, etc. on the payroll to repeat the same misconceptions over and over again: “There is no evidence that wheat is bad for you, with the caveat that you eat the right amounts as recommended.”So let me dispel common myths and misconceptions that continue to swirl and threaten to derail you off the path of health and slenderness. (As in my books, my use of the term “wheat” encapsulates all forms of grains, as they share numerous characteristics.)So, in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let's take apart some of these commonly held myths and misconceptions surrounding wheat and grains to protect you from the flood of misinformation and disinformation. The gut microbiomes of many if not most modern people have been devastated by highly processed diets, biocides and overuse of antibiotics, which has destroyed countless beneficial bacteria required for optimal health. The impacts are many, upon our mental health, moods, weight and behavior. Our guest in this show, Dr. William Davis, Cardiologist and Author of the books Wheat Belly, Undoctored, and Super Gut [https://drdavisinfinitehealth.com/about/], exposes the problem with our wheat addiction and has connected the dots between gut health and common modern ailments and complaints. The ancient bacteria that keep our digestion highly functional have been dying, and replaced by harmful microbes that negatively impact our physical and mental wellness. Supergut draws on cutting edge research, to connect the dots between gut health and modern ailments including SIBO, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, a silent and profound epidemic affecting 1 out of 3 people. Entire species of microbes have disappeared creating numerous health conditions that were uncommon 50-100 years ago. Digestive disorders, Parkinson's, autism, ADD, ADHD, and neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's are more prevalent than ever before. Super Gut shows us how to eliminate bad bacteria and restore “good” bacteria and reprogram our microbiome. By addressing the root cause of gut flora disruption, we can improve health. Disease factors can be lessened or eliminated, and oxytocin levels can improve. Moreover, brain health, anti-aging, weight loss, mental clarity, and restful sleep can all be results of a healthy microbiome. In this episode, Dr. Davis will share how a restored microbiome is the key to lasting inner and outer health. Achieving an optimal level of vitamin D provides numerous health advantages, from relief from winter blues to reduction in cardiovascular risk to reduced risk for several forms of cancer. It's one of the most important nutrients to get right, i.e., achieve an ideal blood level of the primary blood marker for vitamin D, 25-OH vitamin D. But, even after many years of I and others discussing the importance of vitamin D, I still see plenty of people getting it wrong, often on the advice of their doctors. Sadly, you would think that doctors would be champions of nutrition, intelligent management of nutrients like vitamin D, the microbiome and other issues in health, but they usually are not. If anything, they are experts in the business of healthcare, but not in health—big difference. So, in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let's discuss some of the finer points that help you get your vitamin D status perfect. ______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.SKIN TO IT PodcastWelcome to Skin to It.Your guide to healthy skin. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, I bring together a number of strategies I've discussed piecemeal in past that have enormous potential to improve skin: reduce wrinkle depth, increase dermal collagen, increase dermal moisture, accelerate healing, reduce existing sun damage and prevent future sun damage. Recall that we don't achieve this with topical application, but with oral consumption. It's the dermal layer of skin, after all, beneath the largely impenetrable epidermis, that is the seat of skin health and appearance. If the dermis cannot be effectively accessed through the exterior epidermis, how do you achieve improvements in the dermal layer? Orally, of course. For instance, hyaluronic acid consumed orally exerts dermal benefits body-wide. So let's discuss strategies that you can adopt that provide smooth, healthy, more youthful skin, but all achieved orally. ______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here. From now through August, Paleovalley is running a Buy One Get One Free promotion on Essential Electrolytes. She takes a very holistic view of health and loves educating people about the low carb lifestyle and how different foods affect the body, as well as focusing on other elements of lifestyle and the psychological and mindset aspects of dietary change. Having studied nutrition and health psychology, Carla was perplexed as to why she suffered from a variety of health conditions, such as polycystic ovaries, obesity and fibromyalgia. Once she discovered insulin resistance was at the root cause, she revolutionised her health. Carla's qualifications in psychology and nutrition, combined with her life altering personal experience and passion, allow her to motivate and inspire others to change what they eat, as well as how they think about ‘diet'. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, I interview Joyce Laszloffy who personally struggled with a crippling sugar addiction and overweight for many years. She experienced extreme ups and downs, trying to overcome the powerful pull that sugary foods can have on us. She shares how, for years, she managed to hide her addiction from her family and friends, often feeling powerless and humiliated, dealing with health issues including high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, fatty liver, depression and mood swings, until she found the key to finally kicking the habit. She has since taken her ideas to others through her courses, helping people banish sugars in all its forms from their lives with often spectacular results. Joyce delves into her belief that the problem often lies not within individuals but within the food system itself. Drawing from her journey of becoming vegetarian and vegan, she explains the importance of aligning dietary decisions with personal beliefs and identity. By understanding the psychology and science behind addiction, Joyce outlines why conventional methods such as willpower and restriction frequently fall short. She encourages listeners, particularly women, to arm themselves with knowledge and approach quitting sugar in a holistic, value-driven way to reclaim their health and happiness.Grab Your FREE Sugar Sleuth Tool Kit now to learn where sugar is lurking. https://get.ikickedsugar.net/freeguide/You can learn more about I Kicked Sugar and Joyce Here:FREE 2 Hour Workshop: https://get.ikickedsugar.net/register-training/________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the Show.Books: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, I interview life coach, Molly Zemek. Molly comes from the unique background of having worked as a Le Cordon Bleu formally-trained French chef for 10 years. She is also a certified sommelier. But, with this intensive background in food and wine, she found herself falling victim to uncontrolled eating and drinking impulses. She then turned her attention to gaining control over her eating and drinking impulses and now, as a life coach, helps others deal with their temptations and impulses. She does so through her new book “Decoding Your Emotional Appetite: A Food Lover's Guide to Weight Loss” and her podcast “Weight Loss for Food Lovers” where she brings the lessons learned from her own journey and that of her coaching clients. We also dive into the complexities of managing alcohol consumption, especially from the perspective of a trained sommelier. Molly shares her insights on mindful drinking, including techniques like keeping a diary of alcohol intake and planning intentional choices. Discover how to appreciate the art of wine and food pairing without excess and find new ways to relax and connect without relying on alcohol. Molly's unique blend of culinary expertise and life coaching offers a holistic approach to achieving balance and healthy living. Don't miss this enlightening conversation that can help you develop a healthier relationship with food and drink.More from Molly Zemek: MollyZemek.comMolly's new book: Decoding Your Emotional Appetite Molly's podcast: Weight Loss for Food Lovers________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the Show.Books: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
You have likely heard the headlines: cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia are on the rise. Part of the increase is due to an aging population. But there are reasons that are adding to the increase beyond this. The epidemics of insulin resistance (recall that dementia is often labeled “type 3 diabetes,” meaning that the brain becomes insulin resistant), SIBO endotoxemia, the ubiquity of heavy metal toxicity, and deficiencies of important nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D are likely making their own contributions. There are a number of strategies that you can adopt, however, that hold potential for reducing your risk for developing cognitive impairment, or at least delay its onset. There are also various factors that you can supplement, some of which hold potential for improving cognition and, in some cases, slow or help prevent cognitive impairment and dementia. But this area is filled with imprecise thinking and, sadly, misleading marketing. To help you get your arms around these ideas, let me introduce you to a concept that makes gaining an understanding of what works and what doesn't that can keep you on track and avoid pitfalls that waste time, effort, money, and have little to no benefit for brain health. It is to understand what factors provide nootropic and thereby temporary effects vs neurotrophic factors that actually generate healthy improvements in brain health and physiology. ________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Redefining Strength Fitness Hacks PodcastFeel, move and look your best at any and every ageListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the Show.Books: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, I have a special guest: microbiologist Kiran Krishnan, PhD. In addition to conducting research on microbiome and health issues, Dr. Krishnan also built a successful company called Microbiome Labs, a major provider of unique probiotic products.Dr. Krishnan has gained an international reputation for innovative thinking on microbiome issues pioneering, for instance, the science and application of spore-forming microbes. His studies have shown that such spore formers can reduce endotoxemia, minimize the damage done by antibiotics, and increase microbial diversity. In this interview, Dr. Krishnan tells us about a novel approach to skin health he and his team have developed. ___________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the Show.Books: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
Cancer is, of course, something we all fear, a collection of diseases that strike us down unexpectedly and often put us at the mercy of a deeply flawed and exploitative medical system. So it can help to identify the factors that leads us down this path and take action to minimize such risks. We don't smoke cigarettes, we try to consume organic foods whenever possible to minimize the carcinogenic effects of herbicides and pesticides, we avoid getting sunburned—advice you are all likely familiar with. But the microbiome is proving to be an exceptionally powerful factor in causing or preventing cancer, in some unexpected ways. For instance, it has become clear that many instances of colon cancer get their start in the mouth. It is also becoming clear that numerous forms of cancer, from breast cancer to prostate cancer, originate with the composition of microbes in the gastrointestinal tract. It is the one common thread among many forms of cancer. This single insight has the potential to give you enormous control over your lifetime risk for these diseases. So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let's consider these cancer-related issues of the microbiome. It is, admittedly, a conversation that is just getting started with many more lessons to learn. But gain an awareness of these microbiome-related issues and you can take concrete steps to address these risks. ___________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
