Host Jodie Sweetin is joined by Amy McCarthy and Special Agent William (Bill) Bodner in Charge of DEA's Los Angeles Field Division. It's common and often warranted for parents to be anxious and concerned for the things their children may get into online. Countless ways exist for children to run into potentially dangerous situations including retail drug trafficking, once relegated to the dark web is now available across the web and social platforms! In this episode we will explore when and how much online time is appropriate. We will learn about how drugs and other illicit activity is coded and we will discuss ways to keep our kids safe online, monitor their activity and access and give them rules and guidelines that help them keep themselves safe. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:05] Dark web and social media [3:36] Access to counterfeit and prescription drugs [9:02] Appropriate age for social media accounts [10:30] Decoding your kids emojis and social media [14:55] Non negotiable ground rules [18:14] Ways to be more present in their child's online and social media presence [19:14] What to do if you find out your child is using drugs KEY TAKEAWAYS: In the last 3 years the ability to connect with drug dealers in brick and mortar places stopped, they migrated online, and that's really the same thing that happened to all of us in our work life Having them know that social media is part of a privilege. Instagram , Snapchat, Tik Tok, whatever social media account, it's like you're being able to look into their room like an extension of themselves. Limiting social media time can be really important as kids can get detached from other activities that are healthy outlets for them in their lives. ***DISCLAIMER***The views, information, or opinions expressed during the Awkward Conversation series are solely those of the individuals, speakers, commentators, experts, and or hosts involved and do not necessarily reflect nor represent those of the production, associates or broadcaster, or any of its employees. Today's awkward conversation is about knowing the signs of possible drug use and what to do. Our host, Jodie Sweetin is joined by Timothy P. McMahon who has been employed by the DEA since 1998 and Amy McCarthy, Clinical Social Worker at Boston Children's Hospital. Special Agent McMahon shares common ways that kids hide drugs in plain sight and what signs to look for with changes to personality, involvement, or money use. They also share tips on how to talk to your child about drugs and how to respond with love rather than anger if you discover your child is using drugs. This topic can be scary and overwhelming to parents but they need to remember the sooner you address it, the better. IN THIS EPISODE: [01:44] How to look for drug use with your children [08:56] How to respond if you discover your child is using drugs [15:45] The magic number of 25 [17:10] What are signs to look for KEY TAKEAWAYS: Teenagers often hide drugs in plain sight. Some places could be behind picture frames on the wall, in a book on their bookshelf, or even in a pop can or tennis ball. If you discover that your kids are using drugs, be sure to not respond in anger. Take a step back and collect your thoughts before approaching your child. Rather than lecture them, ask open ended questions and come at if from a place of wanting to understand what's going on. When you find these drugs you need to address the situation as quickly as possible because the situation will only get worse. And with each time that they use or engage in drug use, it can only lead to that much more danger. Ineffective communication in all humans, will affect how we behave. Children who cannot communicate, do not have the life experience to handle their feelings and situations and that presents in their behavior. Ashley Scott, SLP-BCBA, shares in this episode the ongoing and intentional processes of building expressive language in children. There is a difference between having vocabulary and functional language skills. A child may be able to count, say their ABCs, or identify color, but they may not be able to communicate. So they may know the color orange, but if they want an orange, can they say “mommy I want an orange”. Functional language is not just talking but using words to request, negotiate, and communicate with their parents and peers. It is not cut and dry, “a kid can talk so they start talking”. If you are working on getting a child to talk, there are so many things that need to be in place, so it is important to have less focus on words and more focus on foundational skills as simple as learning to sit. Ashley's advice for parents is to ask fewer questions. Narrating is a key to building language skills and understanding the meaning behind words. Ask less questions and comment and narrate everything as you and your child are doing it. Pair everything you're doing with real words, to build connections between the activity or item and the word. We want to expose kids to a rich vocabulary, but when kids aren't communicating, keep words simple. They don't have to be long sentences, but instead small phrases and keywords. For example, you don't need to say “you're putting on your shoes” instead hold and point to the shoes and say “shoes on” or you don't need to say “let's open the door now” instead say “open” but say it a few times, clear and exaggerated. One of Ashley's big questions for therapists and parents is, “how much are you facilitating?” Wait time is a big piece. It is critical to give children time to process and respond. One thing Ashley said that makes so much sense is working on language is an art form, a unique balance between foundational skills, modeling, narrating, and allowing silent time for processing language. Another key part of therapy is that the skills a child can perform in therapy should be able to be performed, across all of their environments and with all people they interact with. It's important to create opportunities for communication. This differentiates the difference between can't do or won't do. Reinforcement is critical, modeling what it looks like to respond to a request. Repeating a request over and over is not effective. Say it one time, and if they do not comply, physically complete the request with them. For example, you don't need to say come here over and over. If they do not come the first time, show them what coming here looks like. Building expressive language is about building independence. There are so many teaching opportunities that are missed because as adults we meet the child's needs that they can do themselves and we do not give them the opportunity to ask for help or demonstrate their knowledge. The biggest takeaway for parents and professionals here is language and communication is more than just talking. #autism #speechtherapy What's Inside:Getting started with expressive language delays.Real tips and strategies for parents and professionals. The art form of building expressive language.Building language happens in more than just the therapy room. After reading both Reset Your Child's Brain by Victoria L. Dunckley, MD and Glow Kids by Nicholas Kardaras, Ph.D. we discuss the impact of screen time on our own children as well as the concept and the practicality of a 3 week "reset" as recommended by Dr. Dunckley. In our discovery, our kids are being stimulated at a rate unlike any other generation. The gaming industry has put the R&D into keeping our kids hooked on screens. However, gaming isn't the only industry competing for our kids time. Can we pull our kids off? How much time is too much time. A child's dopamine levels are incredibly high when immersed in an active screen. Is this over stimulation sacrificing relationships? Join us as we talk through both books, the over arching concept and perhaps one of the greatest challenges parents have with getting their kids to look up. additional resources are available on finding-moments.com/library
This is a great episode for Dads that face separation from their kids due to work or life situations. Great news - you can successfully parent from a distance and build and/or maintain a secure attachment! In fact any parent will find this episode useful no matter what age your kids are...and great news for any parents that weren't able to establish a secure attachment when your kids were young, it is never too late! I am talking with Catherine who is a Master of Social Work and a Registered Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years experience working with children and families. I have worked with Catherine and she has been a great resource in helping me support and maintain secure attachment with my young son when he transitioned to a new home overseas as well as working with my wife to help our toddler transition to day care which is not always an easy thing for child or parent. Alright, my Revolutionaries, grab your partner and give this episode a listen together. After you birth a child, you realize that your body needs to heal and get stronger to keep up with your kiddo, but what we don't mention is that the non-birthing parent needs to get strong too!The typical “prepare for baby” talk involves car seats and changing diapers. But, were you ever asked, “Are you physically strong enough to carry a 20 lb kettlebell around all the dang time?” Probably not… the physical demands of children are hard. And nobody warns soon-to-be parents of what their body is about to endure. The lifting, the pulling and tugging, the jumping, and more, our body is in the frontline of injury. You wouldn't put your body through a marathon without training, so why is parenting treated any differently?Today, I chatted with Jason Levine, an orthopedic physical therapist and a father of two girls. PT to PT, we discussed the physical demands of children, how you can prevent these child-induced injuries by getting creative with your daily movement and finding the right care based on your individual needs. Here are the links to Jason's amazing resources. (Seriously, join his FB Group for inspiring ways to bring exercise into you and your child's life!) I'm often asked "what's your best advice for new parents". The truth is that there are so many new things happening as a brand new parent, it's hard to digest it all. Sure as a dad, the important parenting advice that you find valuable might be a little different than a mom's. But overall I think these 5 tips will be helpful advice for all new parents. Let's do it. Before we get started I wanted to honestly thank all of you. Your support as a subscriber, comments and feedback, and then the sharing of our videos has really helped us grow....and for that I wanted to say thank you. So back to the video. You're might be getting new parent advice from your family or your friends. Sometimes you get advice even when you aren't asking for it. Being a new parent can often feel overwhelming. Hopefully you will be able to use this advice, and feel better. 1) Your involvement is critical - This may seem obvious for some new parents, but involvement by dads can vary based on your culture, where you live, or how you were brought up. Whatever the excuse, do not leave taking care of the child up to the mom. My advice is to do feedings, bath time, go on walks. Spend one on one time with your child. Not only does your involvement give your spouse a break, it provides great bonding for you and your child. The more you are involved, the greater the benefit to your child. 2) Don't take things personally - When I was a new parent, I thought for sure my first child was really trying to annoy me and test me. But I can I assure you, your baby is not deliberately doing anything other than learning the ways of the world. When they cry, they are trying to communicate. When they defy you, they are trying to understand boundaries. There is not a secret plot to make new parents 3) Enjoy the present - I wish i received this advice when i was a new parent. It wasn't until my second child (2 years later) that I realized I really needed to enjoy the what was happening now. Prior to that I would say things like "I can't wait until he can talk or it will be so much fun when he and i can throw the ball." Not that thinking of the future was wrong, but I think it brought me away from appreciating the present. So my advice for new parents would be to enjoy the present. 4) Learn Patience - Your patience will be tested, I promise you. My advice for new parents is that the more patient you can be, the easier time you will have. I happen to be one of those impatient types. I'm always on time, or early. I need everything right now and most of the time I'm in a hurry. I can tell you this is a recipe for stress and anxiety when you are a new parent. I did a video on how to be more patient. I have used a few different techniques which are explained in the video. My favorite is daily meditation. It helps a lot. 5) You are totally capable - At some point as a new parent, you will doubt your capabilities. You may think you are not cut out for this parenting thing or that you can handle it. I'm here to tell you that you can handle it. Sure being a new parent isn't easy, but it can be the most amazing thing in the world. I would love to hear from you. What is the best advice for new parents that you have received?
