Do you feel like since 2020 your family tech rules have gone out the window? How do you handle tech guidelines if both parents are not on the same page? Do you find it difficult to manage different ages and stages when it comes to screens? Andrea Davis, a mom of five with a degree in secondary education, is here to share a ton of wisdom and guidance on tech and screens for summer and beyond. We discuss the differences between kids earning screens, where often the screens become the entire focus of the long summer days and a family tech plan that creates more balance. Andrea's plan for teens includes the three p's; purpose, plan, and passion. These all create space for your child to get creative and work on skills in their free time. Also, check out her boredom busters in the show notes for the days when mom needs to work, the budget is tight, or the kids are done with all of their daily tasks. This episode is full of practical ideas but more importantly, Andrea reminds us that our kids want time with us and shaping their character and who God created them to be is more important than rules and regulations. My episode description starts with an apology for my poor math. Ironic since this week's guest is a teacher; but not just any teacher - A kindergarten teacher who is entering into her 40th year of teaching. Here is where I show off my poor math skills ... 260 school days (M-F) -61 days (June & July)-21 days for holidays- 10 days misc.Totals 168 days x 40 years = 6,720 days that our guest, Andrea Davis has taught kindergarten. Of course, I don't know the exact numbers, but I do know that Andrea needs some time away from 5-year-olds and she is going to be getting it very soon.
Missoula mayoral candidate Andrea Davis spent the first hour answering questions from callers. Then the Missoula Economic Partnership invited Mallory Ottariano who is the founder and CEO of YOUer and Steve Nelson of Bonner Property Development to the show.

As we head into summer, kids and screen time might be on your mind. And that's exactly why I interviewed Andrea Davis from betterscreentime.com. Andrea's mission is to teach parents how to worry less about technology and connect more with their kids. And what better time to focus on this than during the long days of summer that are around the corner? Because kids' brains are still developing, this is a particularly vulnerable time to place tech in their hands. That's why it's important to take an honest look at what is open and available in the cyberworld when you hand your children a device. Andrea suggests that you take the time to discuss with your kids what they love and don't love about tech; when and where devices will be allowed; and installing passwords, protections, and limits to keep kids from accessing harmful material. She also recommends designing your summer with intention as an alternative to screen time. This includes setting goals, teaching your kids important life skills, and keeping them busy with productive and engaging activities, which is exactly what my Organize Your Summer mini-course helps you to do. Healthy screen habits + Organize Your Summer make the perfect match! Also in this episode, we talked about how technology can be viewed through the lens of the 3 C's: Create, Connect, and Consume. Not all time spent on technology is to be avoided, as it assists you to be creative and also connect with family and friends. The 3rd C – Consume – is the aspect of technology that needs to be managed with time limits and boundaries. And don't you worry – there are plenty of tips for how to help teens with healthy screen use, especially when social media apps like snap chat appear to be a vital way they connect with their friends. Tactics such as installing an app on mom's phone where it can be closely monitored, and choosing an app like Marco Polo that allows teens to connect with fewer true friends in a safe way rather than connecting with endless friends where dangers exist can help you navigate the tech journey with teens. Andrea's parting advice: Foster connection with your kids. Connecting one-on-one promotes strong relationships and good mental health, and also gives your kids a safe place to come when they do access something online that makes them uncomfortable. Isn't it Lovely? Season 8 kicks off with Tracy and Rachel welcoming longtime dream guest and founder of Better Screen Time Andrea Davis to the show! Leaving guilt, shame, and fear at the door, Andrea instead educates and empowers listeners with countless tools, resources, and strategies to create technology habits that optimize enjoyment of screens in healthy ways. Andrea encourages families to establish routines and expectations for technology by creating a family tech plan, understanding the motivation of the three Cs (creating, connecting, and consuming), and having candid conversations about the responsibilities and personal accountability that precede a child having a phone. Andrea celebrates children being smart, curious, and human, recognizing the limitations of a one size fits all mentality and respectfully inviting kids into the reasoning and conversations behind decisions. Andrea and Rachel discuss a reconsideration of using screen time as part of a reward cycle; Tracy and Andrea explore the importance of identity and knowing oneself well enough to counteract social media messaging. Tracy and Rachel swoon over Andrea's multiple book recommendations and mic drop moments, all while attempting to master the art of the mute button. “Be where your feet are.” That's our ultimate goal in ‘balancing' time with our kids and time at work. What does that look like? Well, we are a work in progress figuring it out! What We Do Know: Listen to yourself – notice stress and exhaustion Be open to the help Notice when to say no Connect with child(ren) before work Live your tech life out loud, so your kids know what you're doing Block schedule – then it's not scattered and you can get more done (still room for spontaneity) Episodes Mentioned: Ep. 42 Why to Avoid Kid-Centered Activities with Michaeleen Doucleff: https://kidswhoexplore.com/podcasts/ep-42-why-to-avoid-kid-centered-activities-with-michaeleen-doucleff/ Ep. 78 Outdoor Time Over Screen Time with Andrea Davis: https://kidswhoexplore.com/podcasts/ep-78-outdoor-time-over-screen-time-with-andrea-davis/ The things you want to do: Can you change your expectations of them and do them on a smaller scale with kids around? I am absolutely blown away by the response we've received thus far for dedicating an entire month to this idea of technology! From the standpoint of how we're being targeted and how our kids are being targeted to how to work with tech and not give into the temptation of becoming addicted to our devices - this month is all about helping entrepreneurs be a little less tech dependent and helping entrepreneurial families weave the two and choose a path forward in technology. For this reason, I knew I had to have Andrea Davis on the show. Andrea is a former secondary ed teacher, turned screen time navigator, and she's the founder of Better Screen Time. She shares family tested ideas from the tech trenches as a mother of five and she's on this mission to help parents worry less about technology and connect more with their children, which is a really challenging thing to do in this day and age. She is just a wealth of knowledge in this space and I'm so excited for this conversation, even though I know it might ruffle some feathers. But I invite you to keep an open mind and to take what you need for you, your family, your business and your life. Last year, Alzo Slade took us to Jamaica, where residents are fighting against mining in the most ecologically sensitive part of the island: Cockpit Country. The Maroons who live there, descendants of indigenous people and formerly enslaved Africans who joined together to fight British colonizers, say mining would destroy their way of life. But this year, the government gave the go-ahead to start mining in Cockpit Country. And the Maroons have filed a lawsuit against the Jamaican government, trying not only to stop the mining, but also to finally get recognition of their sovereignty. This week, we're re-airing last year's episode with an update about the latest court battle. This episode was produced by Jen Kinney. Tell me if this sounds familiar? You love your kids, you love technology, but when they're together, you're terrified of both. Ok, terrified might be too strong a word. But, when you stop and think about it, there's just so much that can go wrong with kids and tech. Yet we live in a digital age. We're all on screens—for homework, entertainment, and everything in between. To survive emotionally, while raising kids in this media-saturated world, we gotta figure out how to untangle the tech, and fast! In this episode, I speak with Andrea Davis. Andrea is the mom of five children, aged 17 and younger. She's also the founder of Better Screen Time, an incredible organization helping parents worry less about tech, and connect more with their kids. Today we're focusing on teens.
