Thursday event at Capitol displays, collects blankets and essentials for the homeless

Smart Talk

It's difficult to get an accurate count of the number of homeless people in the U.S. Last January, the federal government took a one-night snapshot and concluded more than 653,000 were unhoused that night. Many say that estimate grossly under counts the number of homeless people. Whatever the real number is, everyone agrees there are more people who are homeless now than before the pandemic. There's a event at the State Capitol in Harrisburg Thursday to provide some essentials like blankets to homeless people, while also displaying blankets that have been contributed. It's called The Homeless Memorial Blanket Project and organizer Pat LaMarche was on The Spark Wednesday,"We've used the longest night of the year to memorialize (homeless) people for a long time. Several years ago, a group of us got together and thought, Well, we could do that, and then also help the ones that are still living. So we wanted to make this massive art installation of handmade blankets. All the blankets are handmade, whether they're knitted, crocheted, quilted, woven. And then at the end of the night, we distribute them to individuals and agencies that can get those out to people in need. So it started out as that. This year, we have morphed a little to highlight, especially children, youth and infants and babies living in homelessness. Is there such an enormous misconception about who the average homeless guy is? You know, this person living under the bridge, which is true. And sometimes those people living under the bridge are children with their families, unaccompanied youth. The difference between you and a person in homelessness is poverty. So poverty can affect people of every age. And unfortunately, does." An explanation for the increased number of homeless is programs to help with rent that were implemented during the pandemic have ended. LaMarche weighed in,"Housing is the single most significant expense. The average household dedicates more than 30% of its budget to housing. The average American renter pays between 13 and 16 hundred dollars a month for an apartment. And if you're a low wage worker, which most of these kids parents are, you can't afford to live anywhere." Rents have increased substanially since the pandemic and are one of the main drivers of higher inflation rates. LaMarche talked about the Homeless Memorial Blanket Project,"(Thousands of ) hours of work on the part of the people who hand-made all the blankets. So, it's a real sign of love. There's a lot of people who thought, I don't think I can do anything about homelessness, but, hey, I can make a blanket. People feel really powerless. And so what this display does is it's a gorgeous exhibit of love and caring. The other thing that we're hoping is if you come and see 700 blankets down the steps of the State Capitol, that's what it would look like, is 700 people were laying there under that blanket. And every single person will have every one of those 700 blankets (they) will go to a person before the week is out. So, they're real numbers and they're real people. Last year we did the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. We had 1200 blankets. They're all gone within a week. There are real people that will be under these blankets."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, Nov. 23  The WV Folklife Apprenticeship Program helps carry on the soul food tradition. Our nation's capital gets a second Christmas tree from the mighty Mon Forest. And California native settles in Hinton and opens Lucky Rivers Cafe…on today's daily304.  #1 – From WV PUBCAST – It's a warm spring afternoon at Manna House Ministries, a Second Baptist Church in Beckley, West Virginia. Xavier Oglesby is singing his favorite hymn as he prepares a macaroni salad in the church's kitchen.  From macaroni salad to biscuits to chitlins, soul food is a cooking style that is intrinsic to Black culture both in the South and Appalachia. More so than the food itself, it's the way a meal comes together that makes soul food, soul food. “When you think of soul food, that's the first thing you think of is Black folks. Because we were able to take nothing and make something out of it for a meal, and that's the way it is even today,” Oglesby said.  Oglesby has been cooking since he was a teenager, having learned from four generations of his family. Now, he is teaching his niece, Brooklyn Oglesby, how to cook soul food and family recipes. He's doing this through the West Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program. Folklife apprenticeship pairs are carrying on community-based traditional art forms and cultural practices — from fiddle instrument repair to mushroom foraging — all with the goal of passing on stories, skill sets and traditional knowledge.  “I'm hoping I can raise two sons that know how to cook,” Brooklynn said. “I'm hoping I can keep that going and teach my kids, and hopefully they'll be better cooks than me one day.” Read more: https://wvpublic.org/w-va-folklife-apprenticeship-pair-passing-on-family-soul-food-traditions/   #2 – From WV PUBCAST – It's going to be a wild and wonderful Christmas in Washington D.C. as West Virginia sends a second Christmas tree to the nation's capital this year. A 40-foot Norway spruce from the Monongahela National Forest is being placed on the Ellipse at the White House. It replaces the previous White House Christmas tree, which had to be removed after developing a fungal disease. The tree joins a 63-foot Norway spruce that will be displayed on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Both trees came from the Monongahela National Natonal Forest.  Read more: https://wvpublic.org/2nd-tree-headed-to-nations-capital-from-mon-national-forest/   #3 – From WV LIVING – After moving to West Virginia for college and deciding she wanted to stay here, California-born Sarah Gleason spent several years working as a volunteer and teacher.  Inspired by Anthony Bourdain's iconic book “No Reservations,” she decided to quit her teaching job and start cooking for a living. She started out working in a small restaurant in Hinton, until it closed during COVID-19, then bounced around a few restaurants in Lewisburg and Beckley—and even did a little catering out of her home. Now she's opened her own restaurant in Hinton, the Lucky Rivers Cafe. The menu features mouth-watering sandwiches like the Prime Rib Gyro and Gail's Pimiento Cheese, as well as the restaurant's signature Buddha Belly Bowl. We'd tell you the ingredients but the list is long and it will make you hungry, so you'll have to see for yourself at www.luckyriverscafe.com. Braving Business: Tales of Entrepreneurial Resilience and Courage in the Face of Adversity

Co-host PJ Benoit interviews his colleague and Braving Business Podcast host, the serial entrepreneur, consultant, activist and keynote speaker Tal Zlotnitsky, about his remarkable life and the motivation for launching the podcast. Born in Israel, where he was a television star as a child, Tal came to the U.S. at the age of 12 and for a time he and his parents were undocumented immigrants. Tal began his entrepreneurial journey with a spectacularly failed painting franchise as a college sophomore, but parlayed that failure into a career where he has built one after another ground-breaking business. He was the co-founder and CEO of mobile parking payment pioneer iControl Mobile, sold to RingGo, and now known as ParkMobile. Tal also Co-founded and was the CEO of iControl Data, a financial technology firm which was an early pioneer of a process called Pay on Scan to speed up and improve the accuracy of transaction settlement between merchants and their vendors. Now backed by Goldman Sachs, which Tal facilitated in 2015, iControl today processes billions of dollars in payments each year for tens of thousands of customers. Tal remains a major shareholder and serves on the board of iControl Data, and has also been an investor and board member of more than a dozen other startups, including of what became one of the world's most highly rated travel pillows, JetComfy, co-created by his brother Ephi Zlotnitsky.Currently, Tal is a senior principal for global tech consulting firm, Infosys, where he is a strategic transformation advisor to Fortune 500 clients. He is also Chairman of his most recent startup, Our Love Company, and founder & CEO of a still-in-stealth-mode generative AI startup, Breez. Beyond his professional career, Tal has been involved in causes he is passionate about, from immigration, to the rights of gays and minorities, to tax reform. He was selected as a member of President Barack Obama's Presidential Partners in 2009, and spoke on behalf of the president on business and tax policies, including to the White House press on the West Lawn of the White House. He was on the policy and steering committee of the presidential campaign of Pete Buttigieg, and he sits on the advisory board of the Muma (Moo-Mah) school of business at the University of South Florida, based in his home town of Tampa. Tal has also spoken at numerous rallies, conferences and events on the topics of equal pay, a higher minimum wage, tax reform, leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, leading with courage and purpose, and overcoming adversity.

We just heard that Classroom guest Peter Boyer is up to some big stuff (go Peter, it’s your birthday…): First, the National Symphony Orchestra – that’s the orchestra in residence at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. – will be playing Peter’s work Rolling River (Sketches on “Shenandoah”) on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on September 3, 2017; And also, on September 9th, in an “It’s a Small Classical Music World After All” moment, Classroom alum Brett Mitchell will be conducting the Colorado Symphony and soloist Renee Fleming in a performance of Peter’s New Beginnings. In honor of this news, we decided to rerun Peter’s episode. Enjoy! Why do composers write symphonies? What goes into writing a symphony? If it has three movements, is it still a symphony? I mean, really: What IS a symphony anyway?! Grammy-nominated composer and conductor Peter Boyer answers all of these questions and more by taking us deep into his Symphony No. 1. From making dots on a page, to recording the piece with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, this is a tell-all of one composer’s creative process. Come along, won’t you? Goood. Goood… Music in this episode: Peter Boyer, Symphony No. 1. Played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Naxos 8.559769. Longenecker says that Anytime Fitness is attractive to clients because it is accessible and affordable. Longenecker tells Zeke that in off-peak hours the gym is unstaffed but members can text trainers with questions at any time. Members have access to the locked facility through an electronic key fob. “My gym is a little bit different from typical gyms,” Longenecker tells Zeke. “Everyday people working to get to a healthier place. I was looking for a facility in line with my philosophy. It’s about taking care of people, a very personal friendly gym. The biggest difference is customer service. The key to success is to surround yourself with good people and being in a comfortable environment. I have three trainers on staff and you also can access classes online -- on demand in the gym.” Anytime Fitness last year was named the No. 1 global franchise for the second straight year by Entrepreneur magazine. Longenecker tells Zeke that the franchise business model dictates a limited staff to allow trainers to get to know the clients on a personal level. As for a training tip, Longenecker shares with Zeke that “strength training and muscle building are equally important as cardio if you want to lose weight. You build muscle and burn calories all day.” Anytime Fitness has other Berks locations in Blandon, Hamburg and Gilbertsville.

The retired health and physical education teacher and athletic director at Wilson also has coached 15 individual state champions. Snyder tells Zeke that "I get more satisfaction from developing a mediocre swimmer into a good swimmer than from developing a naturally gifted swimmer into an outstanding swimmer." He still loves going to the pool every day because he loves working with the kids. He is coaching in his second pool at Wilson, a state-of-the-art facility now in its second season -- a facility that is used heavily by the Wilson community. Swimming is a sport of repetition, but the routine over five decades of coaching never gets old for Snyder. "The kids keep me going, working with the kids," Snyder explains. "Seeing them improve ... taking average or below average kids and making them pretty good. It's all about team. Everybody counts." When Zeke asks Snyder what has changed the most in swimming over his five decades, Snyder responds: "Weight training. Our kids are in the weight room about three times a week."
