Marketing strategies for nonprofits don't have to be complicated or expensive. The key thing is to focus on clarity, consistency, and connection. Make sure your message is strong, use the right tools to amplify your voice, build relationships with media and supporters, and measure what matters. Most importantly, don't get caught up in trying to do everything at once. Choose one or two marketing strategies that align with your nonprofit's goals, and start there. In today's podcast, Leslie Smith from McCormick L.A. Public Relations and Stephen Halasnik from Financing Solutions (https://financingsolutionsnow.com/) discuss no-nonsense marketing strategies and public relations for nonprofits.
Leslie Smith candidly shares her journey from an abusive childhood to college and to a professional career, currently as the leader of the Omaha Municipal Land Bank, a quasi-public nonprofit organization that transforms vacant and abandoned properties into community assets, manifesting Smith's passion for improving the quality of life for all people.Leslie Smith, a native Mississippian, serves as the Executive Director for the Omaha Municipal Land Bank, where she leads the organization's efforts helping to stimulate the local economy by addressing systemic vacancy issues at its core. Before coming to Omaha, Smith worked for Truist Bank developing inclusive lending mortgage strategies. As one of the foundational programs of the Blight Authority Memphis, a quasi-governmental nonprofit, Smith helped launch and lead what became a full-scale operational land bank serving the city of Memphis, energizing her passion for improving all residents' quality of life regardless of their zip code.
The gap of understanding between humans and animals is vast, and building a bridge of communication is a rewarding part of being a pet owner. Leslie Smith brings us this Perspective.

“Consider your patient's diagnosis. What kind of cancer do they have? And ask yourself, ‘Could this patient be in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)? Is there something more that we should be doing or looking at?'” Leslie Smith, RN, APRN-CNS, DNP, BMTCN®, AOCNS®, oncology clinical specialist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BC, AOCNS®, oncology clinical specialist at ONS. So, the next step for the nurse would be to look for the lab or ask for an order—you can order a DIC panel in some institutions—but look at coagulation labs. And really care and support these patients. DIC is not a disease in itself; it is a symptom of a disease, it is a syndrome. And it's indicative of another problem occurring.” Timestamp (TS) 07:09 “In the chronic form, patients who live in a chronic inflammatory state—maybe from arthritis or whatever the process is—their coagulopathy will not be as severe as an acute form. They may have an elevated prothrombin time (PT) or partial thromboplastin time (PTT). Their platelets may be a little bit low and their fibrinogen may be just a little bit low, but it's not life-threatening. And in an acute stage of DIC, it is life-threatening.” TS 08:43 “If we are taking care of patients who have received CAR T cells, for example, nurses know to monitor for cytokine release syndrome, we're watching for fever, we're watching the C-reactive protein levels or the ferritin levels, and we're treating appropriately via tocilizumabs . . . preventing DIC that way. Patients who are at risk for developing sepsis. . . . watching for signs of impeding infection . . . . Those types of things can prevent DIC from occurring.” TS 12:26 “I think it can be a little bit confusing for the nurse because they're vague symptoms. So, if you have a patient that is maybe thrombocytopenic, you could attribute, ‘Well, they have all this petechiae from their thrombocytopenia.' It's difficult. That's why you need to really draw a lab. . . . It is not just one lab or one sign or symptom that will diagnosis DIC. There's no one thing that tells you that the patient has DIC. You need to look at all the lab work to make that determination.” TS 14:15 “Nurses are going to support the patient with transfusions. . . . And this will help in an attempt to normalize the lab or at least get the factors and the platelets back up. And then treating the disease. . . . And then in addition, if the patient is infected or septic, administering the antibiotics.” TS 16:26 “DIC is often thought—especially by patients or family—that once you start that chemotherapy or the antibiotics, that the DIC will go away. That is not true. It can take days to weeks for the DIC to resolve itself. It's not something that is going to happen overnight. The patient will need to continue to be supported.” TS 18:13 “Consider what is the diagnosis of your patient. If they have cancer, what kind of cancer do they have? And ask the question to yourself, ‘Could this patient be in DIC? Is there something more that we should be doing or looking at?'” TS 19:22

Luke Rockhold is an American professional mixed martial artist (MMA). Rockhold is currently signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he competes in the Light Heavyweight division. Rockhold is a former UFC Middleweight Champion. The UFC is notorious for being anti-union. Based on records made available through an ongoing class action lawsuit from numerous ex-UFC fighters, the promotion has approximately paid out 16 to 20 percent of the revenue to the athletes. Most other major sports leagues — including the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball — pay out around 50 percent of the revenue to the athletes. (source) Nearly 80 percent of MMA athletes said they would be in favor of organizing a union (source). Kobe Bryant even suggested the UFC should have a union. In May of 2017 Bryant was invited to speak to UFC fighters at an athlete's retreat and was asked by labor organizer and featherweight contender Leslie Smith about the importance of collective bargaining and labor unions to NBA athletes like him. Kobe answered as follows: “Even us as players, where we have our union meetings and things of that nature, we're normally at each other's throats competing against each other. But we understand completely that a rising tide raises all boats,” Bryant continued. “When you guys have this unity and you guys are operating together on the same page together, it does nothing but simply fortify the sport, make the sport better. Not just for the present, but also for future generations that are coming. So, it's extremely important.” (source). ------------------------------------------- Edited Transcript of Luke Rockhold's Press Conference for UFC 278 on August 17, 2022. (Full video here) (Question) Over the past few weeks you've been very vocal about fighter to pay. Do you worry that maybe the promotion will sort of be rooting against you if you continue to talk out about that subject? Root against me for what? What are they gonna do? I mean, root against me, go for it, do your thing, dude, I'm here to fight. I'm not saying anything that's not real. Everything I'm saying is justified and truthful. Just because like, I should be in a position of power before I say this shit? Fuck off, I got nothing to lose. I don't need this business. I love the fighting and I'm here to fight the best motherfuckers and this happens to be the place where it's done, you know? They need to grow this whole fucking thing needs to grow together. Our lives are on the fucking line. Healthcare needs to be taken care of, our fucking health needs to be taken care of. Mine has not been taken care of, you know what I mean? Like, yeah, this is business, every business is like this, it's about leverage, it's a game of leverage and life. And it's about fucking, always keeping the upper hand. It's it's not just here, it's everywhere. And if you let these motherfuckers think that they have that leverage, it's only gonna grow above you. So it's just people understanding their worth. (Question) And when you say your health hasn't been taken care of, can you elaborate on that? I don't, I don't need to, I mean, it's just, it. things should be easier. You know what I mean? Insurance should be fucking year round. The giant is growing and it's like, there's one thing that should be fucking paramount is these fighters health, you know? It's fucking our lives and our bodies are on the line every fucking time I step into that cage, and if we're not fucking protected, it's like, fuck, come on, wake up. ------------------------------------------- About the Labor Solidarity Podcast The Labor Solidarity Podcast highlights the work of labor leaders while discussing historic struggles and the importance of organizing with the goal of building international labor solidarity. Leslie Smith has shined as part of all the great folk locales, the Newport, Kerrville, and South By Southwest music festivals, and her songs have been done by many folk-greats, like Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Williams, although I think they are best out of Leslie's own mouth and guitar. Along the way to now she did a stint as part of a New York bluegrass band called Arabesque, but then she headed back to Pittsburgh, back to her center.

This week, Memphis Metropolis gets deep into the weeds to understand the causes of blight and how community developers are using innovative tools to eradicate it, one property at a time. First, Leslie Smith, executive director of Blight Authority of Memphis, explains what a land bank authority can do and how BAM's creation brought some new tools to the table in the city's efforts to fight blight. Later in the show, regular commentator (and self-described 'blight nerd') Austin Harrison returns to discuss the economic impact of blight on neighborhoods and the city, and why acknowledging the racist causes of blight - including public policies that supported redlining and predatory lending - are key to developing equitable ways to eradicate it. After the break, the guys preview a sneaky-good Bellator 241 card featuring Patricio Pitbull vs. Pedro Carvalho, Daniel Weichel vs. Emmanuel Sanchez, Paul Daley vs. Sabah Homasi, as well as names like Nick Newell, Anatoly Tokov, Matt Mitrione, Leslie Smith, and Baby Slice. 159 - Listen as UFC fighter Leslie Smith and I talk about Project Spearhead and her efforts to form a union. In short, UFC fighters are treated like employees but are labeled as independent contractors - which means they don't get the benefits and pay an employee would. We also talk about how Strippers and Walmart employees have it better than UFC employees, address Jon Fitch's recent comments about Leslie's unionization efforts, Leslie getting kicked out of MMAFA, fighters not showing up at their contracted fight weight, stand up comedy, and more! What exactly is Project Spearhead? Project Spearhead is a vehicle to give the fighters in the UFC more power in negotiations, payments that are reflective of their worth and comprehensive medical insurance both during and after a fighter's career with the UFC.
