In our season seven premiere, we welcome the managing director of the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy and former mayor of Toronto, David MIller. We discuss the crucial role of cities in “fixing” the climate crisis, what we can learn in building sustainable and equitable urban communities and explore the question of just how prepared Canadian cities are to meet the challenges of this crisis. Reflecting on the key role of cities in dealing with the climate crisis, Miller says: “The international community said, okay, climate change is a problem. And then they took 21 years to come to an agreement. Twenty-one years! … A mayor would be thrown out if she waited 21 years to act on anything. It's just inconceivable. So the nature of city governments lends themselves to action. And because they have responsibilities that significantly impact on whether we're going to have low-impact cities from a planetary perspective, whether we're going to have cities that emphasize equality or produce inequality. Their actions are really important.” About today's guest:  David Miller is the managing director of the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy.  He is the author of “Solved: how the great cities of the world are fixing the climate crisis” (University of Toronto Press) and host of Cities 1.5 podcast. In 2017 and 2018, Giddens appeared in the fifth and sixth seasons of the CMT's  In January 2018, Giddens co-produced Songs of Our Native Daughters for Smithsonian Folkways. in early 2018, the Nashville Ballet announced that Rhiannon Giddens has been commissioned to write the music for Lucy Negro, Redux. With 37 verdicts of more than a million dollars, few lawyers in America can match the track record of success of New York trial lawyer Judy Livingston.  What's more, many of Judy's verdicts came at a time when few women were trial lawyers.  Join Ben and Rahul for their in-depth interview with Judy in which they explore the sources of the courage and fortitude that fueled her success.  Judy shares accounts of her early trial practice, where she literally had to create a new mold as a woman in the courtroom.  Judy discusses her approach to trying complex medical malpractice cases and connecting with a jury.  She talks about juggling life and the demands of raising a family with a husband who, like her, is a renowned trial lawyer.  If you are a trial lawyer or aspire to be, there is no way you can listen to this episode without feeling inspired.  About Judy LivingstonTop Personal Injury Attorneys | Kramer Dillof Livingston & Moore (kdlm.com) Judith A. TALK ART EXCLUSIVE! We meet Sir Antony Gormley OBE RA to discuss his forthcoming solo show 'Aerial' at White Cube New York, USA and his epic new 'Time Horizon' public installation of 100 sculptures which has just opened at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, UK. We explore his entire career across this intimate, highly detailed, feature-length special episode recorded in person at his London studio.Antony Gormley is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. Gormley's work is concerned with the experience of being in the world and an expression of how it feels to be alive. Through a critical engagement with his own physical existence, Gormley identifies art as a place where new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise. For him, art can be a place of becoming where, collectively, we can think about our role as creators of the future: ‘I want it to be about life. I want it to be about potential.'We explore his new works made for ‘Aerial', an exhibition by Antony Gormley in New York, in which the artist considers sculpture as an instrument for proprioception – the body's innate capacity to sense and perceive its position, movements and orientation in relation to itself and the environment. The exhibition features two recent developments in Gormley's practice: one explores physical proximity in mass and scale, where two over-life-size bodies merge as one, while the other endeavours to catalyse space almost without mass.Whilst 'Time Horizon', one of Antony Gormley's most spectacular large-scale installations, is currently being shown across the grounds and through the house at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. Featuring 100 life-size sculptures, the works are distributed across 300 acres of the park, the furthest away being approximately 1.5 miles on the West Avenue. The cast-iron sculptures, each weighing 620kg and standing at an average of 191cm, are installed at the same datum level to create a single horizontal plane across the landscape. Some works are buried, allowing only a part of the head to be visible, while others are buried to the chest or knees according to the topography. Only occasionally do they stand on the existing surface. Around a quarter of the works are placed on concrete columns that vary from a few centimetres high to rising four meters off the ground.Gormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and was made a knight in the New Year's Honours list in 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges, Cambridge. Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003.Antony Gormley's 'Aerial' runs from 30 April – 15 June 2024 at White Cube New York.‘Time Horizon' runs concurrently at Houghton Hall, Norfolk from 21 April – 31 October 2024, the first time the work has been staged in the UK.Follow @WhiteCube and @HoughtonHallVisit: https://www.whitecube.com/gallery-exhibitions/antony-gormley-new-york-2024andhttps://www.houghtonhall.com/antony-gormleys-time-horizon-2/ Hosted on Acast. Following military service and four years at Wittenberg University in Ohio, he studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He received a doctorate in composition (DMA) from Stanford University in 1966, where he studied with Leland Smith. Chowning discovered the frequency modulation synthesis (FM) algorithm in 1967. This breakthrough in the synthesis of timbres allowed a very simple yet elegant way of creating and controlling time-varying spectra. In 1973 Stanford University licensed the FM synthesis patent to Yamaha in Japan, leading to the most successful synthesis engine in the history of electronic musical instruments. He taught computer sound synthesis and composition at Stanford University's Department of Music. In 1974, with John Grey, James (Andy) Moorer, Loren Rush and Leland Smith, he founded the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), which remains one of the leading centres for computer music and related research. Although he retired in 1996, he has remained in contact with CCRMA activities.Chowning was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988 and awarded the Honorary Doctor of Music by Wittenberg University in 1990. The French Ministre de la Culture awarded him the Diplôme d'Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1995. He was given the Doctorat Honoris Causa in 2002 by the Université de la Méditerranée, by Queen's University in 2010, Hamburg University in 2016, and Laureate of the Giga-Hertz-Award in 2013.Dave Bristow BiogDave was born in London and worked as a professional keyboard player recording and touring internationally with a variety of artists including Polyphony, Slender Loris, June Tabor, Tallis and 2nd Vision. Active in synthesizer development, he played a central role in voicing the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and is internationally recognized as one of the important contributors to the development and voicing of FM synthesis, co-authoring a textbook on the subject with Dr John Chowning. He spent three years at IRCAM in Paris, running a MIDI and synthesis studio working with contemporary music composers and artists, then moving to the United States in the 1990's to work for Emu Systems, Inc. on sampling and filter-based synthesizers. In 2002, he began working again with Yamaha developing ringtones and system alert sounds for the SMAF audio chip series used in cell phones and mobile devices. He has been an instructor at Shoreline Community College teaching electronic music production and synthesis for ten years, but still finds plenty of time for composing and playing piano with RedShift jazz quartet and developing his interest in computer arts.Gary Leuenberger BiogGary started in music at a young age and, in 1975, founded G. Leuenberger & Co. in San Francisco. It soon became one of the world's largest retailers of pianos, synthesizers and electronic keyboards. In 1980 he started working with Yamaha as part of their product development team. It was through this that he was recruited, along with the likes of Dave Bristow and Don Lewis, to create the factory presets for the DX7. Gary's most famous, or infamous, patch was the legendary E.Piano 1 which became equally one of the most popular and despised sounds ever! Nevertheless, his association with Yamaha continued until 2000, at which point Gary went back into education, gaining his Bachelors of Music and Masters in Classical Piano Performance from San Francisco State University in 2007.Since then, he has taught electronic music at SFSU and gives private tutoring to budding musicians of all ages. Manny Fernandez BiogDr. Manny Fernandez has been involved in synthesizer programming and development with many manufacturers for over 35 years. Initially self-taught prior to traditional university study of analogue synthesis, in the late 1970's - early 1980's the emerging digital synthesis techniques caught his attention with their expanded timbral possibilities. He acquired a DX7 in the fall of 1983 and using Dr. Chowning's original academic articles as a guide began exploring FM synthesis in depth. In 1987 he began his relationship with Yamaha, programming for a wide range of their synthesizers through the years to the current Montage M. Acknowledged as one of the world's foremost FM synthesists and having extensive experience with physical modelling synthesis as well, his programming approach is to create unique and dynamic timbres with interesting yet useful real-time controller implementations.Rob Puricelli BiogRob Puricelli is a Music Technologist and Instructional Designer who has a healthy obsession with classic synthesizers and their history. In conjunction with former Fairlight Studio Manager, Peter Wielk, he fixes and restores Fairlight CMI's so that they can enjoy prolonged and productive lives with new owners. He also writes reviews and articles for Sound On Sound, his website Failed Muso, and other music-related publications, as well as hosting a weekly livestream on YouTube for the Pro Synth Network and guesting on numerous music technology podcasts and shows. How are we to acknowledge someone with an honorary doctorate? Are there concerns when doctorates are conferred from schools with questionable credentials and accreditation? With the rise of supernatural schools of ministry and diploma mills, there is concern that individuals are potentially being awarded degrees unethically, and such esteemed credentials provide perceived legitimacy and authority. Join me in an interesting discussion with Richard Moore on this subject. Richard Moore and his wife have been missionaries in Germany since 2014. Richard is an evangelist, an experienced youth pastor and preacher. He's been in church ministry for over 25 years. Newest Quark.ai board member has a distinguished background in science, leadership corporate development, Girl Scouts and Head Start “When you think about human development, education is the key,” says Sylvia Acevedo, Quark.ai's newly appointed board member. Acevedo observes that historically, education sees the “sage on the stage” while the students passively learn. “With AI, and generative AI, you turn that and really flip the script. Students can now own the learning process at a speed that is customized to them, and then the teacher's role is really the expert, the mentor, the guide who can really crystalize the learning for the student.” “What really drew me to AI is its incredible potential to make an impact on the world, and my belief that we can navigate its challenges to make sure its benefits are realized.” Acevedo is an experienced independent board member, currently serving on two public boards, Qualcomm Inc, and Credo Technologies, and a privately held company, Ambri Inc. Previously, she served on two private company boards, Dynamic Signal, a SaaS employee communications company, and Synergis Education, a higher education services company. Ms. Acevedo has a proven track record as a CEO and has been highly awarded for her success in a variety of industries, technology, education, federal government, and national non-profits. Quark.ai's potential to change customer service. In this podcast we discuss the immense potential of AI but also the dystopian possibilities. We learn that as Quark.ai's founder, Prosenjit Sen, began to talk to Acevedo about Quark.ai and the potential for great change, the conversation included a thought process that includes encouraging the market to use these new technologies wisely, train people for positions where they a re leveraging AI vs being replaced by AI, along with the nearly revolutionary way the technology might transform industry after industry. “We have built something special,” says Sen. Reflecting on the global discussion on how AI will change industries and employment, Sen reflects on the idea that with proper training, AI has the potential to make employees in, for example major industries such as automotive, more productive. “Regular people will be able to do sophisticated jobs.” An experienced leader Acevedo held executive roles at Apple, Dell, IBM, and Autodesk. Reflecting on her time as Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scouts of the USA from May 2017 to August 2020 and as interim CEO from June 2016 to May 2017, Acevedo discusses how she led the organization to help close the gender gap among young people in STEM. “What I am really proud of is that over one million STEM merit badges were earned and over 180,000 of these were in cybersecurity.” Rocket Scientist A rocket scientist by training, Ms. Acevedo holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from New Mexico State University and a M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University. She has also been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science from Duke University and an Honorary Doctorate from Washington College. “What really drew me to AI is its incredible potential to make an impact on the world, and my belief that we can navigate its challenges to make sure its benefits are realized.” About Quark.ai Quark.ai's Autonomous Support Platform is the industry's first pre-trained, purpose-built Generative AI platform that uses Large Language Models (LLM), classical Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Computer Vision technologies to provide a unique platform for Technical Support, Field Support, and Sale Support. My chat with Siila Watt-Cloutier so moved me, and she made me think differently. For example, she believes that the trauma we are going through as a Planet and Human Species are the same, and so is the path to healing.  If she were sitting down with me today, I would ask:  If everything on this Planet is interconnected, does that mean we all feel the loss when a species goes extinct, or a fire consumes a forest? You will also have many questions as Silla Watt-Cloutier will open your mind to our planet's realities and told through her gift as an observer, storyteller, and someone who can bring together to bring about change. Siila is one of the world's leading thinkers and doers in preserving our planet and humanity, with a particular focus on protecting the way of life of the Inuit. (I have listed a partial list of her acknowledgements and awards and acknowledgements below.) If you are like me, you will mark so many points of the journey she shares as remarkable. Silla's Indigenous values and lessons are worth considering for how we all live and respect Mother Nature. One that stuck with me is to stop thinking about problems and instead feel them. To act, you must be emotionally vested.  So this is Sillia Watt-Cloutier's remarkable story.  Don't just listen to her words....feel them.  And then share them because we are all in this together. Lindsay Patrick, Head of Strategic Initiatives & ESG at RBC Capital Markets, joins the show. Lindsay is passionate about her and her organization's role in preserving our planet and its inhabitants. As part of our series on Geology Tom welcomes Robert Quartermain to the show. Bob explains his early background in computer science, living in the maritime provinces. His experience at Baker Lake, Northern Canada with a survey crew lead him to take up geology in university. He discusses his early career, which gained experience working with various mines. He has helped make discoveries in many locales around the world, including some exciting initial discoveries. Furthermore, he discusses reinvigorating Silver Standard now known as SSR mining thanks to Rick Rule and Jim Blanchard. From 1992, they acquired old projects for pennies on the dollar, creating a large bank of silver properties. He explains how that collaboration lead to several big discoveries which became successes for their shareholders. It's important to keep administrative costs low while putting the money into the ground to make the discoveries. This way, you're attractive to those with the capital. If you have good geology, good potential, then you can always raise capital. He explains the differences between mining silver and gold. Producing silver is more difficult as it usually requires off-site processing. Historically, mining wasn't often unkind to the environment, but today most operations have a minimal impact. Mining can create huge value from a relatively small area of land. ESG is helpful in leveling the playing field and can help insure a return to shareholders. North American mining companies tend to bring better stewardship to development around the world. His preference is to work in British Columbia. You want an area where there is respect for the rule of law. Bob has worked in Russia, Africa, Haiti, Latin American and the Middle East. It's important to have a safe and effective regulatory environment where you can build up a mine with minimal risk. This is also important for investors, who should consider the potential risks. It's nice to be able to work in your own backyard and come home. He focuses on investing in the people behind companies with superior track records. There are optimal times when you may want to invest on dips, and then there are opportune times when you may want to exit a position. Lastly, he provides some tips for what investments to avoid in the mining industry. In this episode of VOICES' Where Ya From? podcast, Dr. A.R. Bernard teaches us that there are no small churches or small impact—just small thinking. Learn how God took A.R.'s four-member, store-front church and expanded it to the Christian Culture Center and understand that we all can make positive change in our communities by being faithful to whatever plan the Lord has in store for us. Guest Bio: A graduate of Alliance Theological Seminary, Dr. A.R. Bernard is a visionary whose teachings have lifted his church, the Christian Cultural Center (CCC), to become New York's largest house of worship. In addition, he has been awarded Honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees from Wagner College and from Nyack College/Alliance Theological Seminary. His wife, Karen, left her career with the Queens County Supreme Court to raise seven sons and copastor with her husband. Together, they have successfully experienced 48 years of marriage and 42 years of ministry. Notes & Quotes: “Essentially, culture is man's attempts to order his society and determine the best ways to live in it. Now contrast that to the kingdom of God, which is the reign and rule of God or the government of God or God's way of doing and being, which [also] means a culture.” “God's presence has to be present within the culture in order to affect change.” “What makes us different? Our Christian identity. What does that mean? Secondly, how far do we adjust to the culture without compromising our Christian convictions? How far do we blend into the culture without losing our Christian identity?” “There are no small churches or small projects. There's only small thinking.” “We live life on levels, we arrive in stages. Begin where you are, and build upon that.” Links Mentioned: Visit our website to sign up for emails: whereyafrom.org Leave us a review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/where-ya-from-podcast/id1581145346 Check out our Voices Collection from Our Daily Bread Ministries Follow Where Ya From? on Instagram: @whereyafrompodcast Extra resource: This Far by Faith reading plan A.R.
