BrownTown continues the "Chinga La Migra" series discussing how ICE ain't shit with Rey Wences of Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and Any Huamani of Brighton Park Neighborhood Council (BPNC). Fast-forwarding from the last conversation in summer 2025 focusing on the criminal-legal battles against ICE, the team reflects on the experiences, strategies, and lessons learned from resisting and building power during Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago in fall 2025. Now that the consistent bombardment of ICE violently kidnapping our neighbors is not as ever-present nor making national headlines, how do hyperlocal and regional resistance cadres of everyday people, community-based organizations, and larger policy networks channel energy and, in some cases, new found awakening into sustainable material change? How do we balance responding to the moment effectively while unapologetically exposing the conditions that got us here in the first place? Here's their take. Originally recorded April 17, 2026.   GUESTS Rey Wences is a longtime community organizer and advocate with over a decade of experience championing immigrant justice. Born in Mexico City and raised in Chicago, Rey co-founded the Immigrant Youth Justice League and later Organized Communities Against Deportations, leading impactful campaigns such as erasing the Chicago and Cook County gang databases. Their work spans grassroots organizing, direct action, and communications at the local and national levels. Before serving as Chicago's First Deputy of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights, Rey was Director of Communications at Organizing Power in Numbers, a national economic justice organization. Rey currently works at Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). Follow ICIRR on Facebook, Instagram, and X. Any Huamani is an organizer in the Southwest Side. Her and her family migrated to Chicago's North Wide from Peru when she was 5. Any grew up in the West Side of Chicago where she saw the disinvestment and an interest grew in her to find out why. Since then, Any volunteered in different non profits and became an organizer the Chicago Hotel Strike in 2018. She is now the Immigration Defense Coordinator at Brighton Park Neighborhood Council (BPNC). She also co-leads Treatment Not Trauma, a city wide mental health campaign calling for the reopening of public mental health centers and a citywide nonpolice crisis response. In her free time, she spends time with her two boys and running. Follow BPNC on Facebook, Instagram, and X.   Mentioned in the episode: Ep. 121 - Chinga La Migra: Understanding Your Rights under a MAGA Regime ft. How Dems Rig the System. Chicago the Next Minneapolis? Non-binary is About Freedom. Trump Sics FBI on Wash Post. US Troops to Iran? RIP John Forte. Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff has an exclusive first media interview with Lindsay Church—Minority Veterans of America founder, disabled post‑9/11 veteran, queer non-binary parent, and now independent candidate for Congress in Illinois' 4th District. This all-new episode dives into what it means to take on ICE in Chicago, confront a rigged Democratic party primary, and run as an independent veteran in the middle of Trump's escalating war on democracy and the free press. Lindsay's campaign is already historic—as they'd be the first non-binary candidate on a federal ballot in American history.  From the streets of Berwyn and Cicero—where ICE raids have become an everyday terror—to the halls of Congress where Lindsay has already helped pass landmark reforms like the PACT Act and the Deborah Sampson Act, this is a raw, unfiltered conversation about power, courage, leadership and accountability. Paul and Lindsay break down the murder of Renee Good in Minneapolis from a combat veteran's perspective, the weaponization of ICE and PTSD, and how this shooting exposes the consequences when discipline and democracy break down. You'll hear why Lindsay believes the corrupt Democratic Party machine in IL‑04 “coronated” a successor behind closed doors, how an independent needs more than 10,000 signatures just to get on the ballot, and why they are running for office in the face of hate and danger—because people deserve a real choice in November and a representative who's earned their vote, not inherited it. The episode zooms out to Trump's broader authoritarian overreach—ICE raids, FBI raiding the home of a Washington Post journalist, threats to NATO, escalation toward Iran, Greenland and Venezuela—while Paul also honors the late musician John Forté, celebrates his wife's new independent film “The Florist,” and reminds listeners that from Tehran to Kyiv to Chicago's Southwest Side, hope and resistance are still alive. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. Populism and working-class nostalgia for the 1950s, with Alan Ehrenhalt

The Vital Center

Donald Trump's most resonant political slogan has always been the one he borrowed from Ronald Reagan: “Make America Great Again.” Trump rarely has been pushed to define when exactly he believes America experienced the greatness he promises to recapture. But many of his followers believe that America's golden age — particularly for its working class — was the 1950s. A 2024 PRRI survey found that some 70 percent of Republicans think that America's culture and way of life has changed for the worse since the 1950s. But what is it that Republicans miss about the 1950s? Alan Ehrenhalt, who has been a longtime writer and editor at Governing magazine, in 1995 explored this question in his classic study, The Lost City: Discovering the Forgotten Virtues of Community in the Chicago of the 1950s. Ehrenhalt investigated three communities in Chicago in that era: St. Nicholas of Tolentine, a working-class Catholic parish on the city's Southwest Side; Bronzeville, the heart of Black Chicago in that era of segregation; and Elmhurst, a split-level suburban community eighteen miles west of downtown, which experienced explosive growth in the 1950s. Ehrenhalt found that Chicago's citizens in the 1950s were subjected to what most Americans now would regard as excessively powerful and intrusive authority — including the authority of the political machine during the regime of Mayor Richard Daley, religion, employers, tradition, and the community itself — but that authority enforced an order that made possible a deep sense of community that has largely vanished from American urban life, for which many Americans remain deeply nostalgic. In this podcast discussion, Alan Ehrenhalt discusses that loss of community and the way it has played into American politics, particularly during the Trump era; the individualism of the baby boom and the way that many young people of that era chafed against the restraints of the 1950s; and the cultural matrix that produced the first American pope, Leo XIV, who (as Robert Prevost) grew up in a community similar to St. Nicholas of Tolentine during the 1950s. He analyzes what both the contemporary political left and right miss about that time, but acknowledges the difficulty of recovering communitarian values in the present era.
