What is it actually like to work in an emergency room? To deal with overcrowded waiting rooms, a shortage of hospital beds, and a constant flow of life-and-death health conditions—while trying to maintain your sanity at the same time? That's the focus of “The Pitt,” a new medical drama on Max from the creators of “ER,” starring one of that show's key actors, all grown up: Noah Wyle. The first season takes place over a single shift, and each episode is one hour of that shift in real time. And medical professionals are praising the show for its accuracy.Joining Host Ira Flatow to talk about the accuracy of the show is one of its medical consultants, Dr. Sylvia Owusu-Ansah, associate professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.Universe of Art is hosted and produced by Dee Peterschmidt, who also wrote the music. Our show art is illustrated by Abelle Hayford. And support for Science Friday's science and arts coverage comes from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.Do you have science-inspired art you'd like to share with us for a future episode? Send us an email or a voice memo to universe@sciencefriday.com.
After 11 seasons on ER, Noah Wyle thought he was finished with medical dramas: "I spent 15 years avoiding — actively avoiding — walking down what I thought was either hallowed ground or traveled road." But then COVID happened, and he felt compelled to tell more of these stories. He spoke with Dave Davies about the making of The Pitt, the medical jargon, and his mom's feedback on the show. Medical dramas on television have been around pretty much since the advent of the picture tube. There was “Dr. Kildare” in the 60's. “Marcus Welby, MD” in the 70's, “St. Elsewhere” was in the 80's… But starting in the 90's there was one team of diligent doctors that stitched their way to critical acclaim and 23 emmy awards. It also propelled its actors to true stardom. There was even a future Batman hidden in the scrubs. This is Still Here Hollywood. I'm Steve Kmetko. We have entered an exciting new TV drama era in which creators are immersing viewers in the gritty, heart wrenching details of real life trauma. We are celebrating this provocative and inspiring new chapter by focusing on two of the most buzz-worthy shows in the stream-os-phere, The Pitt on Max and Adolescence on Netflix - Prepare for a fresh frame of reference on the emerging television landscape! The Netflix show Adolescence is sparking tons of discussion, and we are entering the dialogue via our producer Dina Friedman who watched the limited series with her 13-year-old son, Ryder. As a portrayal of a young man who's accused of murdering a classmate, presented without cuts, Adolescence is a bold, ambitious and unflinching production in both form and content. As a serving middle-schooler, Ryder offers unique insights into social media, bullying and the relationships between middle schoolers, technology and their parents. Ryder shares his opinion on the online “'manosphere” and incel' culture which Adolescence explores and he talks about the forces currently shaping his peers' friendship and romantic interactions, while Dina provides the parental perspective.Lesley Boone is also with us to discuss her role as night shift charge nurse Lena on the Max medical show beloved by audiences, critics and medical insiders, The Pitt. Another unique production, The Pitt, which has been lauded as perhaps the most realistic hospital drama to date, is shot in sequence, with star actors, serving as background extras when a scene requires that perspective shift.Lesley shares behind-the-scenes insights and her views on what makes the show stand out within the medical procedural genre. She tells us how medical professionals and veterans work both on and offscreen, ensuring authenticity. For example: That nurse you see in the background operating a heart monitor or swapping out a fluid bag is an actual nurse!Lesley talks about the impressive professionalism of Noah Wyle, the medical training received by the cast and she shares the trade secret that allowed an actor with a fork stuck up her prosthetic nose break for lunch! In recommendations --Weezy: Netflix documentary Bad Influence: The Dark Side of KidfluencingFritz: The book FIGHT by Jonathan Allen and Amie ParnesPath Points of Interest:Lesley Boone on WikiLesley Boone on IMDBLesley Boone on InstagramThe Pitt on MaxAdolescence on NetflixFIGHT by Jonathan Allen and Amie ParnesBad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing

It's one of our indulgences, and as I always tell you, look for business lessons in your everyday life - so that's where this is coming from. Are you watching The Pitt? It's the new medical show starring Noah Wyle who was Dr. John Carter on ER. It's super fast paced and exciting - well, maybe exciting is the wrong word to describe it, but it is interesting, shocking, sentimental and a whole lot more, all wrapped up in one. If you aren't watching it, you have watched medical dramas before, I'm sure. So you can liken these lessons to the show that you did watch - but if you aren't watching The Pitt, you should check it out- I highly recommend it! I know, you might be thinking, “What does a fast-paced emergency department have to do with running a virtual assistant business?” Well, surprisingly, quite a lot! Just like in the ER, as VAs, we need to be adaptable, focused, and always learning. Okay I do understand that it's not life and death, what we do, but there are still some very important lessons that we can draw on from the two industries. So today I'm going to break down 10 lessons from The Pitt that you can apply to your VA business right now. Let's get into it! Which of these lessons resonates with you the most? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Send me a message or connect with me on social media. And if you're looking for more support in building a confident and profitable VA business, check out my programs and services on my website - the link in in the show notes but you can go to YourVAMentor.com/links for everything I do. Thanks for tuning in to this episode - be sure to share it with a VA colleague if you think they would find it valuable. That's all I've got for you this week - But really, go check out The Pitt. His signature mix of sharp dialogue, brutal violence, and unexpected humor makes his films stand out. Here are five of his most iconic moments:The “Royale with Cheese” Conversation – Pulp Fiction (1994) Before anything even happens, Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) discuss European fast food with absurd detail, setting the tone for Tarantino's unique blend of casual conversation and impending violence. The Tavern Standoff – Inglourious Basterds (2009) What starts as a simple undercover mission turns into a slow-burn, tension-filled masterpiece. The suspense, the performances, and that final explosion of violence make this one of Tarantino's greatest scenes.Mr. Blonde's Dance – Reservoir Dogs (1992) Michael Madsen's sadistic yet strangely charming dance to Stuck in the Middle with You before torturing a cop is pure Tarantino—cool, unsettling, and unforgettable. The Bride vs. The Crazy 88 – Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) Uma Thurman's battle against a seemingly endless wave of sword-wielding assassins is one of the greatest action sequences in modern cinema, complete with Tarantino's love for stylized violence.Candyland Dinner – Django Unchained (2012) Leonardo DiCaprio's chilling performance as Calvin Candie reaches its peak during this tense dinner scene. The reveal of Django's plan and the real-life glass-smashing moment make this unforgettable.Main Feature: ERBefore Tarantino became a household name, he directed an episode of ER in 1995 titled Motherhood. While he didn't get to add any of his trademark bloodbaths, his influence is evident in the episode's fast-paced, chaotic energy, whip-smart dialogue, and stylish camera work.Beyond Tarantino's contribution, ER was one of the defining medical dramas of the ‘90s and early 2000s. It delivered intense, emotionally charged episodes with a cast led by George Clooney, Julianna Margulies, and Noah Wyle. The series set the gold standard for hospital dramas, balancing medical realism with compelling character arcs.Kids Feature: Duck DodgersShifting gears completely, we end this episode on a lighter note with Duck Dodgers, the hilarious sci-fi spin on Daffy Duck's adventures. Originally appearing in the 1953 short Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century, the series expanded in the early 2000s, bringing us more of Daffy's over-the-top antics as an incompetent space hero battling the evil Martian Commander.Final ThoughtsFrom Tarantino's most iconic moments to high-stakes hospital drama and Looney Tunes in space, this episode has something for everyone. The Max hospital drama The Pitt stars ER veteran Noah Wyle. It takes some elements that are common to the medical genre and mixes them with some very contemporary thinking about health care and an inventive structure. Each episode follows one hour in the ER over the course of a very long day – so the layout is less Grey's Anatomy and more 24.
