Phil and Emily are joined by actress Fiona Dourif to launch a brand new mini-series, Richard Kelly Reichardt, with the cult classic that started a thousand dorm-room arguments: Donnie Darko (2001).Richard Kelly's debut premiered at Sundance, opened the same day the Patriot Act was signed into law, and promptly bombed in theaters before Drew Barrymore's Flower Films, a $4.5 million budget, and a generation of video-store rentals turned it into a phenomenon. The gang digs into why it became the movie every college bro swore was a misunderstood masterpiece, and whether it actually holds up a quarter century later. They get into the big stuff: the tall bunny named Frank, the pocket-universe time-loop mechanics, and that gut-punch ending where Donnie chooses to sacrifice himself. Emily, who has seen this more times than almost any movie in her life, untangles Kelly's "ironclad" explanation, why she prefers the simpler emotional read, and why the director's cut overexplains everything. Fiona connects it to American Beauty and Magnolia, the search for God after religion, and her own time-bending turn in Christopher Nolan's Tenet. And the whole table takes on modern film-discussion culture's obsession with mapping every rule instead of just living inside a story that doesn't quite make sense.Plus: baby Noah Wyle, the most unhinged high-school teacher ever written, and a stacked early-2000s cast that keeps making you hit pause. Does Donnie Darko hold up, or did it age like the 25-year-old screenwriter dialogue it's built on? The boys are back! After taking a well-deserved mental health break (and weathering what we're told were hundreds of concerned emails — each one personally answered by Adam, naturally), Daniel and Adam return with fresh energy and a new member of the extended Mix family. Daniel introduces us to Sebastian, his AI personal assistant who helped prep the show, and we quickly learn that saying "Hermes" out loud leads to instant confusion with luxury handbags. The show kicks off with Adam's mysterious butt muscle injury ("I herniated a butt muscle") and some exciting James Corden news, before things take a more serious turn: Adam's mother, over lunch following her doctor's appointment, asked him to remove the word "gay" from his podcast name. Adam handled it with grace and conviction — gay isn't a bad word to people who know it isn't one — and we couldn't be prouder. From there, the show spins into classic Mix territory. Daniel delivers a forensic breakdown of Apple's WWDC keynote videos, convinced the outdoor walking shots were studio-voiced and AI-lip-synced — an audio Uncanny Valley that had the internet buzzing. A fascinating science piece argues that adults who reread the same novels aren't stuck in the past; they're using fiction as a mirror to measure who they've become, which leads to a discussion of Adam's third rewatch of The West Wing (season 5 is a struggle, we hear you) and Daniel's revelation that his local UPN station once followed Mama's Family with "more sci-fi adventure" as the lead-in to Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the Contact segment, Brian writes in about YouNify, a tool for consolidating watch lists across streaming services, and we get a moment of silence for synthesizer pioneer Michael Iceberg. Then Adam tells us the sweetest story about a baby bird in his crepe myrtle tree — which takes a hard left turn into a possible lawnmower incident he insists was pre-existing. The News Game delivers a respectable showing (even if the World Cup final being in New Jersey remains deeply funny), and the 60-second bonus round tests Daniel's trivia mettle on everything from Pixar to moonwalkers. A delightful digression into a 1982 ABC7 consumer report on home computers — complete with cassette tape programs and the immortal advice that "if you could bake a cake, you can write a program" — reminds us all that the home computer market was supposed to fully evolve by 1985. Spoiler: it took until 2000.Adam shows off his latest UV printer project — a custom metal sign for his stepfather featuring ChatGPT-generated art (sorry, artists) — and the Birthday segment brings us Noah Wyle, Anderson Cooper, and Dana Carvey. Then comes the segment Joe Betance probably won't hear: an exasperated PSA that pairing a Bluetooth phone to the RODECaster Pro 2 takes exactly three button presses. Three! The show wraps with the kind of scheduling certainty we've all come to love — they might be here next Friday, or maybe the week after, July's spotty because Daniel has a long vacation, but they'll definitely be back at some point. We hope you enjoy!Email: Contact@MixMinusPodcast.comVoice/SMS: 707-613-3284

Everyone's juggling a lot in The Pitt Season 2, but Isa Briones' storyline as Trinity Santos feels especially full. Not only is being a second-year resident at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center's Emergency Department especially taxing, but on this particular day, she also faces the return of Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), Dr. Robby's (Noah Wyle) pending exit for his sabbatical, and the realization that she might not get precisely what she wants out of her relationship with Dr. Garcia (Alexandra Metz). As is very often the case with The Pitt, the writers do an exceptional job of blending workplace challenges with personal concerns to craft stories about fully realized people giving everything they've got to others, while trying to figure out how to care for themselves in the process. With The Pitt closing in on its Season 2 finale, Briones carved out the time to swing by the Collider Ladies Night studio to discuss everything that's happened through Episode 13, “7:00 PM,” before jetting off to New York City for her run in Just in Time on Broadway. We covered lessons learned from her father, Jon Jon Briones, takeaways from Star Trek: Picard, what it was like joining the cast of The Pitt, and, of course, everything Santos is trying to power through on July 4th. I recently started watching "The Pitt," and I am deeply impressed. The acting, writing, and storylines are exceptional. What especially stayed with me is how human the show feels. Noah Wyle seems to have grown into the perfect role - experienced, compassionate, exhausted, imperfect, and believable. The series manages to be both entertaining and thoughtful, especially in its treatment of mental health, suffering, forgiveness, and end-of-life issues. I also discovered the Hawaiian practice of Ho'oponopono - and realized I have been practicing something very similar for more than 40 years without ever knowing its name. If you are watching The Pitt - or decide to start - I would genuinely love to hear what you think. “One of the reasons The Pitt has been so successful is because it's showing real expertise in a time when everybody thinks they're an expert,” says Dr. Mel Herbert, who brings decades of experience as an emergency medicine specialist to his work as a writer and consultant on the hit HBO Max show. Dr. Herbert, who was also a consultant on the groundbreaking TV drama ER, is one of seven physicians on The Pitt's writing and production team, which explains the high degree of medical accuracy that is a hallmark of the show. But Dr. Herbert is also proud of the emotional accuracy captured on screen. “It's about the emotions. It's about the stress. It's about how it really affects the doctors and the nurses that I've found the most interesting to write about.” In this candid conversation with host Lindsey Smith, Dr. Herbert talks about his own struggles coping with the demands of life in the emergency room and the importance of letting clinicians know that help is available. “You don't have to suffer. We can help you now in ways we couldn't even do ten years ago. That's the story I want to tell.” In addition to his work using TV as an educational vehicle, Lindsey and Dr. Herbert discuss his real world efforts to provide emergency medicine education across the globe through his companies EM:RAP and EM:RAP GO. This week, Monz, Amelia and Stacey explore the ‘performance’ of public parenting, inspired by Elin Strong’s viral article. So, are you actually parenting for the other people at the park? If the answer is yes, you might be a popcorn mum. The swaddling fail by TV’s favourite doctor has ignited a firestorm amongst fans of medical drama The Pitt and we have thoughts. Also, we discuss Schitt’s Creek actor Dan Levy’s controversial take on planes and babies, and why even most parents are onboard. Plus, Prince Harry and Hamish Blake are opening up about men’s mental health postpartum. It has us asking, who’s looking after the dads? Also, Amelia has a new slang term for us that you’ll ‘low-kenuinely’ love. And, Stacey shows us what’s inside her smug ‘analogue bag’.

In this heartfelt and wide‑ranging conversation, I sit down with the legendary Jonathan Frakes—director, actor, advocate, and beloved member of the Star Trek family. Together, we reflect on our shared participation in PurpleStride, the nationwide walk to fight pancreatic cancer, and the powerful community that continues to push research forward. Jonathan shares insights into advances in treatment, the work of PanCAN, and why this cause remains deeply personal to him. From there, we dive into the world of Star Trek: the creative energy behind Starfleet Academy, Jonathan's experience directing the milestone episode “300th Night,” and the emotional weight of the season finale “Rubicon.” We also lament the current pause in new Star Trek productions—a moment of uncertainty for fans and creators alike The conversation expands into Jonathan's admiration for his longtime friend Noah Wyle, including his role as emcee at Noah's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. We also bond over our shared love of For All Mankind, and I take a moment to sing the praises of Star City, celebrating its world‑building and emotional depth. This episode blends advocacy, fandom, friendship, and storytelling into one inspiring journey. I mourn the passing of one of SyFy Sistas, Subrina Wood due to Pancreatic Cancer. Manchester City came out on top in their crucial top-of-the-table clash against Arsenal in the Premier League. Frank and Eddie were impressed by Haaland and Cherki, but just how lucky was Gabriel to avoid being sent off? Elsewhere in Europe, PSG suffered a surprise defeat that puts a bit of pressure on the reigning champions in Ligue 1, and Bayern Munich continued their record-breaking season in the Bundesliga. On the back of success, Eddie thinks that Harry Kane could be a Champions League win away from entering some very exclusive company. In the NFL, the New York Giants traded away star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, but Frank is happy with the move. And which NFL player is the best comparison to Noah Wyle?
From playing Dr. Carter in ER, swearing he'd never do another medical drama, to starring in and exec producing the Emmy Award-winning HBO series The Pitt, Noah Wyle has made one of the great TV comebacks. And this time, it's personal. In this chat with Josh, Noah opens up about why The Pitt feels different: it's a raw, unflinching look at the American healthcare system post-Covid, tackling subjects rarely seen on screen including mass shootings, fentanyl, the border crisis, the nursing shortage, incel culture, and trans rights. He talks about why portraying doctors' mental health playing Doctor Robby on the front line matters, and why he thinks men find it so hard to talk about their own. He's candid about seeking therapy throughout his life and why it's been quietly fundamental to who he is today. Noah also reflects on what it feels like to have found huge success in his twenties with ER, and then rediscovered it all over again in his fifties, with a Golden Globe, Emmy, and an Actor Award for his role in The Pitt. He talks about how George Clooney taught him the value of teamwork, why he felt like an imposter for years until now, why they made the decision to ban phones from the set of The Pitt and how The Pitt brought him and his mum, a former medical professional, so close that they've lobbied together in Washington for healthcare workers. Feeling overwhelmed by nonstop headlines, collective anxiety, and the wild world of pop culture? In this episode of Culture Changers, I dive into the phenomenon that is The Pitt the cult-favorite HBO medical drama that's suddenly become the most patriotic show on TV (according to a New York Times opinion piece by Frank Bruni). If you're obsessed with medical dramas, hosPittal lore, or just want to know why everyone's talking about nepo baby actors, aging double standards (ahem, Noah Wyle), or the enigma of Nurse Dana's accent, you're in the right place. I break down what sets The Pitt apart, including its gritty, real-time storytelling, behind-the-scenes accuracy with real ER consultants, and its wild Reddit fandom. We'll talk about the show's reflection of America's collective grief, the burnout crisis in healthcare, and why this gritty drama mirrors our chaotic news cycles and cultural divisions better than anything else on TV. I gleefully dissect the fan theories, messier character arcs (is Santos a sociopath or just the ultimate survivor?), and the secret sauce behind why this show is unmissable for culture critics and pop culture junkies alike. No guest today. Just you, me, snarky hot takes, and a big reminder that the stories we obsess over are way deeper than just water cooler gossip. I talk about: Collective grief reflected in medical dramas Assumptions and embracing human complexity Empathy vs. lack of empathy in healthcare Pop culture's impact on real-world behaviors Nuance in political and social identity Trauma and resilience in modern society Fan culture and community through entertainment Timestamps: 00:00 The Pitt: Season Two Insights 03:31 Realism and Reflection in Drama 07:09 Navigating Grief and Uncertainty 11:51 Dr. Mel: America's favorite Doc 15:59 Light, Funny, and Profound 18:06 The Halo Effect and Trust 21:50 Santos: Polarizing, Resilient, Badass 26:04 Tragedy, Judgment, and Understanding 31:37 The Pitt: Resilience in Crisis 32:49 Resilience, Joy, and Perspectives 38:26 Togetherness and Finding Your Voice —--------------------------------------------------------- Links and Mentions: Watch HBO's The Pitt: https://play.hbomax.com/show/e6e7bad9-d48d-4434-b334-7c651ffc4bdf Frank Bruni's Opinion Piece in the NYT on the Pitt: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/23/opinion/pitt-america-tv.html Prestige TV's Podcast Episode Breakdown of the Pitt: https://youtu.be/8sB0lR0nKYk?si=nywnnbKi6CfNPk3N To Connect With Me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/allison__hare LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allisonhare/ Website: https://allisonhare.com Book a free podcast clarity call with Allison: https://allisonhare.com/freecall Be sure to rate, review, and follow this podcast on your player and also, connect with me IRL for more goodness and life-changing stuff.Schedule a FREE podcast clarity call with me - Your future audience is out there.
