Heather Chavez thought to herself “would I get out if I was alone?” as she was sitting in the car at her kid’s school when something happened that gave her pause. Should she get out and help, possibly putting herself and her child in danger—or stay safe in the car? That became the inspiration for her debut novel, No Bad Deed. Meet Cassie Larkin. She’s a mother, a wife, and a veterinarian—and her life is about to get turned upside down. Driving home one rainy night, Cassie sees a man and woman fighting on the side of the road. After calling 911, she makes a split-second decision that will throw her sedate suburban life into chaos. Against all reason, she gets out of her minivan and tries to help the woman. When Cassie physically tries to stop the assailant, he turns on her and spits out an ominous threat: “Let her die, and I’ll let you live.” A graduate of UC Berkeley’s English literature program, Heather Chavez has worked as a newspaper reporter and editor. She lives in Santa Rosa, California, with her husband and children. No Bad Deed is her first book. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

When Cassie heard of the ministry called Healing Hearts, she knew she had to share about this ministry with all of you. Today, Cassie is sitting down with one of the Healing Hearts leaders, Carol Clines, who shares about her painful past of sexual abuse that in turn lead her down a heartbreaking path that involved two abortions. If we have learned anything in these episodes, it's that God can use everything, creating such beauty from something so painful. This is how God worked in Carol's life and today she is eager to share his handiwork with all of us!

This week’s discussion in centered on when the universe is pulling you towards something. Before getting into it, Cassie talks about how she gets really clear about things before she will take on a belief or a thought.  When Cassie hears about the universe pulling, her first thought is that the universe is us. Just because we are faced with a decision, the universe isn’t calling us; we’re most often calling ourselves. The universe is not separate from you, so there are no plans that aren’t already a part of you. Ginny and Cassie agree that you can trust yourself when you feel this internal call. When we see the universe as us, there’s no single right answer to that we are presented with. Do you want what feels most loving? Do you want what feels most like your future self? Do you want what feels easiest? You have the power to make choices based on what you want more of.  In terms of the universe delivering us signs, Ginny and Cassie both agree that they’re a reflection of what we’re looking for. We then are given an example of how our brain works based on our energy. Ginny finishes up this episode by saying that literally anything is possible if you have a vibrational match to it. You have the power, and nothing is off limits!

Things You Save In A Fire Book Review Podcast by Book Club Reporter - Laura JayAbout The Author - Katherine Center In addition to her latest book Things You Save in a Fire, Katherine Center is also the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of How to Walk Away which is novel reviewed on my website: BookClubReporter.com. And I will create a podcast for How to Walk Away in the near future.Katherine Center has also written five bittersweet comic novels about love and family, including: The Bright Side of DisasterHappiness for BeginnersAnd, The Lost Husband, which went into production in 2018, as a feature film, unfortunately I was unable to find a release date at this time.Things You Save in a FireA Story About Letting Go and Learning to Begin Again In this "good for the soul" story, fans of How To Walk Away will fall in love with female firefighter, Cassie Hanwell. Cassie is an intelligent and capable young woman following her dream to be successful at what she loves. And what Cassie loves is firefighting. At fire station eleven in Austin, Texas, Cassie can pretty much do everything the men firefighters can do…and sometimes even better. While twenty-six-year-old, Cassie is tough, strong and determined, she is also carrying a couple of gigantic emotional scars. Her mother, Diana, left Cassie and her dad on the evening of Cassie’s sixteenth birthday. In addition, it soon becomes clear, Cassie is suffering the memory of an unspeakable occurrence in her past, the nature of which we have yet to learn. Everyone deals with adversity in their own way. Cassie’s coping mechanism seems to be the development of a stoic and tough exterior. She doesn’t believe in love. And when it comes to her mother, Cassie has no forgiveness in her heart. With Captain Harris, an African-American female, in charge at the progressive Austin fire station, the amount of flack that Cassie might be subjected to from male counterparts, is virtually non-existent. However, that might change as Cassie is faced with moving to Massachusetts, to help out her ailing mother. As fate would have it, Cassie lands a job with an all-male fire station in Lillian, Massachusetts. To make matters even worse, Cassie learns the Lillian fire station doesn’t want a female firefighter. They are only taking her on because they are desperate. Warned by Captain Harris, back in Austin, Cassie has a good idea of what she can expect from the Lillian fire station male crew. When Cassie arrives for her first day at the Lillian fire station, she is welcomed with anything but open arms. She quickly realizes she will need to heed the tough advice of Captain Harris. That advice, in a nutshell, is don’t dress or act like a woman, and whatever a man can do, make sure to do it better. Cassie recognized that she was now a part of a fire station where she would be ignored, excluded and resented; and that no amount of hard work on her part would matter. The first thing Cassie learns on her first day on the new job is that being fifteen minutes early, means you’re half an hour late. The second thing she discovers is, Captain Murphy, of the Lillian fire station, proclaims meetings by announcing: “Attention, please. There’s a stripper at the kitchen table.”As Cassie settles into her new job, she does her best to fit in. She is a pro and an outstanding firefighter. When faced with obstacles, Cassie creates methods and techniques to accomplish the tasks as well as, if not better and faster than the men. Ah, but Cassie is not the only new firefighter in Lillian. A rookie firefighter started work the same day as Cassie. Everyone calls him "The Rookie" and not by his actual name, Owen. Cassie and the fire station male crew.

Mission #46 On Board: Cassie Piasecki Mission: Break the Cycle of Yo-Yo Dieting The Co-Pilot: Today’s guest is the absolutely lovely and inspirational Cassie Piasecki, who incorporates various aspects of real food, fitness, and the power of community to help women lead a WOW Life! If you’re not fully convinced throughout the conversation, just wait until you hear her moving story near the end about a memorable client. As a fitness and nutrition expert, and the founder of the WOW Life Nutrition Program, Cassie knows all too well about the risk of yo-yo dieting. Her mission is to help women avoid this destructive pattern and achieve long-lasting weight loss by forming good habits and incorporating a total mindset shift. Connect With Cassie: The WOW Life@SmartyCassie on Twitter@thewowlife on Facebook@smartycassie on Instagram The Mission Log: [07:07] - Cassie gives some statistics and numbers about weight gain and loss over the holidays, including the scary fact that most people only lose about half of the weight they gain over this time period. [09:36] - The word “restriction” as it relates to dieting doesn’t work for Cassie, and she explains why. In the process, she illuminates the problem with other words with negative connotations that we often use in relation to diets. [11:41] - What language would Cassie use to replace the words that don’t work for her, like “restriction,” “willpower,” and “cheating”? [13:33] - Cassie talks about how she got into the field of health and fitness. We hear about her first attempt to lose weight, which involved learning about portion control. She also discusses how hard it was for her to maintain her weight during the years following her initial success. [16:58] - We hear more about Cassie’s problems with dieting, specifically the issues she had with diet pills. She then discusses her sugar cravings and the related problems. [18:42] - Around the same time, Cassie was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and rheumatoid arthritis. [20:26] - When Cassie was around 40, she started to get more into nutrition to help her mood and her thyroid. [21:36] - Cassie talks about how she cut out sugar in her diet. [25:41] - We hear about all the negative life effects related to eating poorly, and the concepts of wheels of wellness and unwellness that these effects inspired Cassie to create. [27:18] - Orion steps in for a moment to recommend two books to listeners: Sugar Blues, which explains the effects of sugar, and Wheat Belly, which discusses the effects of gluten. [28:12] - Cassie explains that it’s hard for the average person (without a deep background in health and nutrition) to see personal connections between sugar or gluten and inflammation or disease. Instead, it’s easier to approach the subject from an angle related to mood or sleep quality. [31:25] - Orion talks about her experience growing up in Israel and how it compares to typical food choices in the US. [32:23] - How does Cassie convince people to eat more vegetables? Orion chimes in and offers a tip about starting your day with protein and fat instead of protein and carbs, which Cassie supports. [36:20] - Cassie shares her new food addiction: rice tortillas by Food For Life. [36:43] - Orion talks about her previous episode with Dave Asprey. [37:38] - What are the bad fats that we should avoid? In her answer, Cassie emphasizes the importance of eating mindfully. [40:38] - Cassie talks about the step in between eating a standard American diet and eating a completely clean, mindful diet. She recommends doing it one meal at a time. [42:34] - There’s a lot of emotion tied to food and eating, Cassie points out, and weight gain is often a gradual process. [43:20] - What kind of diet would Cassie recommend for a vegetarian? She talks about vegetarian diets (as a vegetarian herself), especially in light of the question of getting enough protein. [46:45] - Cassie has been trying out going dairy-free, which she says is easy. She also says, however, that she hasn’t noticed feeling any different. [49:14] - We learn more about the “wheel of wellness” and the “wheel of unwellness,” with Cassie giving us a way to visualize these wheels. [52:56] - Cassie shifts into talking about the wheel of wellness, after a vivid description of the experience of being on the wheel of unwellness. [55:21] - Orion asks Cassie for an inspirational success story of one of her clients, and the one Cassie shares certainly fits the bill. [59:03] - Cassie shares her three tips for living a stellar life: 1. Do something active first thing in the morning every day. 2. Eat real food. 3. Find something every day that makes you laugh like crazy. [60:42] - Inspired yet? If so, you’ll be glad to know that Stellar Life listeners have access to a special discount for the WOW Life Nutrition Program. Use promo code “stellar” to save $25 (normal price $199.00). Your Pre-Flight Checklist: Make a list of all of the negative terms you use about dieting and food, like “cheating” and “restriction.” For each negative word on your list, come up with two or three positive words. Consciously work on changing your phrasing to these positive terms. Set yourself a challenge of giving up all sugar for three weeks.
