Can you imagine a life where every celebration, every comfort, and every meal is dominated by a substance that's silently damaging your health? That's how Florence Christophers put it as she shared her personal story of sugar addiction, from her first realization of the harmful impact sugar was having on her health, to her discovery of the Sugar Blues book, and finally, her road to overcoming her addiction. Research reveals that sugar's addictive qualities function in our brains similarly to other substances of abuse. Florence neatly categorizes sugar consumers into three groups - users, abusers, and addicts. For those in the spectrum, she discussed the power of whole foods in satisfying cravings and restoring metabolic and mental health, zeroing into the necessity to abstain from sugar and processed carbs. She also emphasized the importance of seeking support, the significance of self-care, and the power that lies in connecting with others. Just like how the Sugar Blues book changed her outlook on sugar, Florence's advocacy aims to help others understand sugar's role and encourage healthier lifestyle choices that can surely transform lives. Get to know our guestFlorence Christophers used to be a sugar addict. She now works as a certified health coach with expertise in sugar addiction recovery and is the founder of the Kick Sugar Summit. “This is a substance, refined carbohydrates, sugar in particular, that shows up in 70, 80 percent of the foods in our grocery stores. This is a substance that we feed children. This is a substance we use to celebrate with each other. This is a substance that we use to comfort ourselves. And this is a substance that has been directly and indirectly linked to every known chronic modern disease. All of them, probably the most inflammatory substance that we could possibly put in our bodies, and most of us are eating it every day, if not at every meal.” - Florence ChristophersConnect with herWebsite: https://www.florencechristophers.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/florence-christophers-7a9a0722/References:Sugar Blues - https://amzn.to/3rGjNeOHacking of the American Mind - https://amzn.to/3Q3HcA3Metabolical - https://amzn.to/46C6effNature Wants Us to Be Fat - https://amzn.to/48Ea35rKickSugarSummit.com - https://www.kicksugarsummit.com/ Chances are, you wouldn't be listening to this podcast if you didn't need to change your life and get healthier. The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast

Ashland, Ky., native Clyde McCoy and his orchestra recorded this song for Columbia in 1933 and then for the next half century he continued to perform it in front of crowds all over the country. In fact, “Tear It Down” was one the trumpeter's two most requested numbers, second only to his signature song, Clarence Williams' “Sugar Blues.” When Clyde moved from Columbia to the new Decca label in 1935, he re-recorded “Tear It Down” as the A side of his band's first release for that company. While millions of copies of the record sold over the years, few listeners ever knew that Clyde's happy, silly swing number was rooted in a dark and desperate neighborhood downriver in Cincinnati. We'll tell that story in a minute. The Clyde McCoy StoryRivers were a big part of Clyde McCoy's life. When he was 9, he moved with his family from Ashland to Portsmouth, Ohio. There, when he was just 14, Clyde found jobs playing on the riverboats, which in those days still worked the waters of the rural Midwest, southern and border states. He performed on the sidewheelers Island Queen and Bernard McSwain. One of the youngest musicians on the river, he already was a stand-out trumpet player. In 1920 McCoy assembled his first band for a two-week engagement at a popular Knoxville, TN, resort. It was quite a trick; though the guys had never performed together, they proved quite popular and their contract was extended to two months. Then for the next decade, the band mates worked from New York to Los Angeles, honing their chops. It was during this period that McCoy also started using a mute on his trumpet, creating the "wah-wah" effect that became his signature sound, a distinctive musical identification.Lightning finally struck when Clyde and the boys landed at Chicago's plush Drake Hotel. When they played their rendition of "Sugar Blues," the crowd went wild. The song hit the radio. A Columbia Records recording contract followed, and the band was on its way. That first record — with “Sugar Blues” on one side and “Tear It Down” on the other — sold millions of copies by early the next year, no small feat in the depths of the depression. Its success fueled a remarkable 68-year career for the Kentuckian. At Clyde's retirement in 1985, total international sales of that original recording were more than 14 million. Meanwhile, McCoy's "Wah-Wah Mute" was so popular that he licensed the King Instrument Co. to market the device to trumpeters around the world. The Wah-Wah PedalClyde's wah-wah-ishness even traveled beyond the trumpet world to guitarists. In 1967, the Vox Clyde McCoy Wah-Wah Pedal, a significant guitar effect of its time, was invented by engineer Brad Plunkett of the Thomas Organ Co. Original versions featured an image of McCoy on the bottom panel. This branding later gave way to just his signature before the name of the pedal was changed to “Cry Baby.”But What About the Song? So, Clyde and his orchestra recorded “Tear It Down” in 1933, but the song seems to have originated at least four years earlier downriver from McCoy's old Portsmouth, Ohio, home. Now our story needs to jump to the red light district of Cincinnati where a pair of young brothers named Bob and Walter Coleman were fixtures in the dives on George Street. With Bob on guitar and Walter on harmonica, the two often teamed up with a Paducah, Ky., multiple instrumentalist named Sam Jones (often called “Stovepipe #1”).In May 1928, Bob Coleman, under the name "Kid Cole," traveled with Jones to Chicago to record four sides for Vocalion Records. When he returned to Chicago in January 1929, Coleman brought with him both Jones and his brother, Walter, to record four more sides for Paramount, two credited to “The Cincinnati Jug Band” and the remainder to Bob Coleman alone. It was in that session that Coleman recorded what seems to have been his own composition, “Tear It Down.” That side — along with the group's "Newport Blues," "George Street Stomp" and "Cincinnati Underworld"— are among the rarest of all jug band recordings and these days remain prized among collectors.Following Coleman's 1929 release, “Tear It Down” became one of the favorite tunes for jug bands. Jack Kelly and the Memphis Jug Band did it in 1930, as did Whistler's Jug Band (though they called it “Foldin' Bed”). Meanwhile, Sam Jones moved to Atlanta, taking the tune with him. When he teamed with guitarist David Crockett, he recorded it for Okeh Records as King David's Jug Band. And today the song still has game. Back in January 2001, for instance, when the guys of Old Crow Medicine Show made their four-minute debut on the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium, they played "Tear It Down" and received a rare first-time-out standing ovation and a call for an encore. Our Take on the TuneJack Nuckols, an old high school buddy of Charlie Bowen's, has played lots of instruments — fiddle, guitar, dulcimer, Autoharp — and as a percussionist he used to jam with The Flood back in the Bowen Bash days.Last week when Jack dropped in to visit with the band, we immediately drew him into the circle. First, we passed him the house bongos to play, but then when a jug band tune came around, we put spoons in his hands. Jack was rocking it hard, we were digging on those rhythmic riffs and, just as we were fixing to turn it over to him for a solo, darned if those spoons didn't break in his hands. Now, Jack was apologetic, but — as you'll hear — we all thought it was a hoot! What better way to end a song called, “Tear It Down”? This is a public episode. Here is a little about Nancy in her own words.  "I was taken to my first meeting of OA January 28, 1975 at Beverly Hills High School more than 45 years Ago.   At that time I weighed approximately 300lbs. I was trying to separate from a man who was beating me up on a daily basis, now called a battered wife.  I had a seven an 9 year old totally out of control from neglect.  I had smuggled dope across border with Heroin Addicts to have friends. I thought if I helped them, I could have a friend.  I was arrested and taken to jail. I was a fat kid and fat my entire life.  Spent a decade on drugs given to me by top physicians in order to lose weight.   My parents had me institutionalized.  They mortgaged their home but I still got bigger. I now am a woman who has dignity.  I put in my mouth what nurtures me and only have friends that are kind to me.  They say beyond your wildest dreams. I had no dreams. This disease took them all away so how do I live now?  ….free of shame and resentment and anger it is called happy, joyous, and free." When he got sober, he started to use sugar instead of drugs and alcohol. Flour and sugar were just the staples of his diet. One day, Michael read a book called Sugar Blues by William Dufty. You can check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Sugar-Blues-William-Dufty/dp/0446343129/benazadi-20 Eventually, he started putting out his own information about sugar addiction on the internet. [12:00] Why People Don't Recognize Sugar As An Addiction People are going blind and losing limbs because of sugar addiction. Some people biochemically cannot ingest sugar. 95% of all people that lose any amount of weight gain it all back and then some in the first year. The word addiction is still stigmatized. So many people are not willing to consider sugar addiction a real thing. [24:00] What Exactly Is Happening In The Brain When We Eat Sugar All of the brain reward chemicals are affected by sugar. In fact, they are manually manipulated by sugar. When you stop eating sugar, your dopamine receptors will be thinned out. If you have a sweet tooth craving, you are looking for a dopamine hit. You can give sugar to a one-year-old, and there are no ethical worries. If you have high-stress events in your day-to-day, maybe you eat sugar as a response. Then it's time to remove the stressful situation so you can ditch the sugar. [37:15] Caffeine Use Disorder Is Accepted By The Medical Community Caffeine use disorder is actually in the DSM. The medical establishment has seen what happens when people overuse caffeine. So, we still have to fight for people who have sugar use disorder. Science is catching up around sugar addiction, and hopefully, people can get the help they need from the medical community. [41:20] Tips For Making The Transition To Keto In 2022 Keto is going to be hard for about seven to ten days. Most likely, you are not going to feel well. If you have a sugar addiction, you are going to be lethargic, and you are going to be depressed. This is normal because your dopamine is finally getting a rest. However, in the long run, you will have a better mood, you'll sleep better, and you'll be able to focus more. [50:15] All About The Quit Sugar Summit 2022 The 8th Annual Quit Sugar Summit is coming up in 2022. It goes through January 24 – 30, 2022. Sugar Blues by William DuftyIt's a prime ingredient in countless substances from cereal to soup, from cola to coffee. Consumed at the rate of one hundred pounds for every American every year, it's as addictive as nicotine -- and as poisonous. It's sugar. And "Sugar Blues", inspired by the crusade of Hollywood legend Gloria Swanson, is the classic, bestselling expose that unmasks our generation's greatest medical killer and shows how a revitalizing, sugar-free diet can not only change lives, but quite possibly save them.=====MEET JASON BARLOW, RMT=====I specialize in helping busy parents feel healthy, happy and energized. My accomplishments include:Highest Rated and Most Reviewed Massage Therapist in the Foothills (Alberta)Author of the 15-Step Playbook for Pain ReliefCreator of the First Aid for Pain Relief ProgramRegistered Massage TherapistCHEK Exercise CoachCHEK Nutrition & Lifestyle CoachCertified PosturologistBuddhist Meditation Teacher=====FREE, INSTANT ACCESS TO THE 15-STEP PLAYBOOK FOR PAIN RELIEF EBOOK=====Visit www.jasonbarlowrmt.com (digital) or purchase a paperback or Kindle edition on Amazon.First Aid for Pain Relief Rx ProgramsDownload and instantly access a more extensive program for your stress, tension and pain at - www.jasonbarlowrmt.com/shop=====HANG WITH ME ON THE SOCIALS:=====www.playbookforpainrelief.comwww.Instagram.com/jasonbarlowrmtwww.Facebook.com/jasonbarlowrmtwww.Twitter.com/jasonbarlowrmtwww.LinkedIn.com/company/jasonbarlowrmtwww.jasonbarlowrmt.com/blog#family #healthy #relax #healthylifestyle #yyc #massage #stressrelief #okotoks

Sugar "Blues”: How Blood Sugar Fluctuations Affect Our Emotions Blood sugar changes affect a person’s feelings since its levels in the blood affects the body and brain. Moreover, emotions have an effect on the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar. This is why when you get or feel emotional, your cravings are heightened. It is very alarming for a person to have a consistent low or high blood sugar. You will need to consult a doctor on what to do about your situation and be analyzed to figure out what the source of the issue is. Regulation of Blood Sugar Very many factors affect the level of sugar in your blood. Every time you consume a meal, your blood sugar rises for about an hour or two afterwards then it drops to a healthy level. This is for people who consume regulated and healthy amounts of carbohydrates on a daily basis. Thus, some of the common factors affecting the level of sugar in the blood include medication, physical activity, and food, among others. The Link between Blood Sugar and Emotions Blood sugar directly affects your emotions. If it is unusually low, this state is known as hypoglycemia and it leads to confusion and anxiety-related feelings. It makes the person behave abnormally and makes it extremely difficult to go about their normal routine. When the level of sugar in the blood is extremely high, this state is known as hyperglycemia and can make the person feel exhausted or fatigued. It can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes. When a person fails to treat their diabetes effectively, he or she may increase the risk of developing depression. If this situation goes on for a long period, the depression might become permanent. Stress is also a key factor in the regulation of blood sugar. This applies to all forms of stress, which is physical and emotional. Stress is responsible for the release of two key hormones, namely epinephrine and cortisol. These two are responsible for raising the glucose levels in the blood. People who are living with diabetes have a tough time when it comes to regulating the level of sugar in their blood. Thus, when such a person goes through stress then it could lead to severely high levels of sugar in the blood.  Monitoring your blood sugar in these situations is critical. A person who suffers from either hyper or hypoglycemia should seek medical assistance and guidance when it comes to making their lifestyle change decisions. He or she should probably be thinking about maintaining a stress journal. This journal tracks their blood sugar levels and identifies the key stressors. This will help him or her combat the source without having to turn to medication at the first instance. This is advised for people who are living with diabetes since they are at higher risk of experiencing mood changes. This is because the brain requires glucose to perform tis functions. If the glucose is either extremely low or high then the brain functions are altered. The emotions are a physical sign and response to the body’s situation.

Mission #46 On Board: Cassie Piasecki Mission: Break the Cycle of Yo-Yo Dieting The Co-Pilot: Today’s guest is the absolutely lovely and inspirational Cassie Piasecki, who incorporates various aspects of real food, fitness, and the power of community to help women lead a WOW Life! If you’re not fully convinced throughout the conversation, just wait until you hear her moving story near the end about a memorable client. As a fitness and nutrition expert, and the founder of the WOW Life Nutrition Program, Cassie knows all too well about the risk of yo-yo dieting. Her mission is to help women avoid this destructive pattern and achieve long-lasting weight loss by forming good habits and incorporating a total mindset shift. Connect With Cassie: The WOW Life@SmartyCassie on Twitter@thewowlife on Facebook@smartycassie on Instagram The Mission Log: [07:07] - Cassie gives some statistics and numbers about weight gain and loss over the holidays, including the scary fact that most people only lose about half of the weight they gain over this time period. [09:36] - The word “restriction” as it relates to dieting doesn’t work for Cassie, and she explains why. In the process, she illuminates the problem with other words with negative connotations that we often use in relation to diets. [11:41] - What language would Cassie use to replace the words that don’t work for her, like “restriction,” “willpower,” and “cheating”? [13:33] - Cassie talks about how she got into the field of health and fitness. We hear about her first attempt to lose weight, which involved learning about portion control. She also discusses how hard it was for her to maintain her weight during the years following her initial success. [16:58] - We hear more about Cassie’s problems with dieting, specifically the issues she had with diet pills. She then discusses her sugar cravings and the related problems. [18:42] - Around the same time, Cassie was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and rheumatoid arthritis. [20:26] - When Cassie was around 40, she started to get more into nutrition to help her mood and her thyroid. [21:36] - Cassie talks about how she cut out sugar in her diet. [25:41] - We hear about all the negative life effects related to eating poorly, and the concepts of wheels of wellness and unwellness that these effects inspired Cassie to create. [27:18] - Orion steps in for a moment to recommend two books to listeners: Sugar Blues, which explains the effects of sugar, and Wheat Belly, which discusses the effects of gluten. [28:12] - Cassie explains that it’s hard for the average person (without a deep background in health and nutrition) to see personal connections between sugar or gluten and inflammation or disease. Instead, it’s easier to approach the subject from an angle related to mood or sleep quality. [31:25] - Orion talks about her experience growing up in Israel and how it compares to typical food choices in the US. [32:23] - How does Cassie convince people to eat more vegetables? Orion chimes in and offers a tip about starting your day with protein and fat instead of protein and carbs, which Cassie supports. [36:20] - Cassie shares her new food addiction: rice tortillas by Food For Life. [36:43] - Orion talks about her previous episode with Dave Asprey. [37:38] - What are the bad fats that we should avoid? In her answer, Cassie emphasizes the importance of eating mindfully. [40:38] - Cassie talks about the step in between eating a standard American diet and eating a completely clean, mindful diet. She recommends doing it one meal at a time. [42:34] - There’s a lot of emotion tied to food and eating, Cassie points out, and weight gain is often a gradual process. [43:20] - What kind of diet would Cassie recommend for a vegetarian? She talks about vegetarian diets (as a vegetarian herself), especially in light of the question of getting enough protein. [46:45] - Cassie has been trying out going dairy-free, which she says is easy. She also says, however, that she hasn’t noticed feeling any different. [49:14] - We learn more about the “wheel of wellness” and the “wheel of unwellness,” with Cassie giving us a way to visualize these wheels. [52:56] - Cassie shifts into talking about the wheel of wellness, after a vivid description of the experience of being on the wheel of unwellness. [55:21] - Orion asks Cassie for an inspirational success story of one of her clients, and the one Cassie shares certainly fits the bill. [59:03] - Cassie shares her three tips for living a stellar life: 1. Do something active first thing in the morning every day. 2. Eat real food. 3. Find something every day that makes you laugh like crazy. [60:42] - Inspired yet? If so, you’ll be glad to know that Stellar Life listeners have access to a special discount for the WOW Life Nutrition Program. Use promo code “stellar” to save $25 (normal price $199.00). For more information about the program, check out this link. Your Pre-Flight Checklist: Make a list of all of the negative terms you use about dieting and food, like “cheating” and “restriction.” For each negative word on your list, come up with two or three positive words. Consciously work on changing your phrasing to these positive terms. Set yourself a challenge of giving up all sugar for three weeks. During this time, observe your body and moods closely to see what a difference this makes. M'Bwebe Ishangi returns to The Context of White Supremacy. An "infopreneur," writer, artist, graphic and web designer, videographer, orator, and creator and publisher of Da Ghetto Tymz magazine, Mr. Ishangi works to reveal truth about the System of Racism. And just like Gus T., he's a recovering sugar junky. Because of our problems with white sugar, we'll devote this installment to dissecting William Dufty's Sugar Blues. Originally, published in 1975, Dufty's work is widely regarded as a nutritional classic and boasts well over a million copies sold. The crux of the book is that processed, White sugar disrupts the healthy state of the body and causes a variety of health problems if consumed on a regular basis. Gus and Mr. Ishangi will detail our childhood consumption of candy, and tips on transitioning away from high fructose corn syrup and other sugars. #TheCOWS INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE 564943#
