A few weeks ago, today's guest set the internet ablaze with her considered and articulate column on women's watches. Cara Barrett has been part of the Hodinkee team since 2015, and her perspective on everything from Patek Philippe to pop culture is both considered and insightful. Today we chat to Cara about her column, the feedback from it and what she would like to see change in the world of women's watches. We also talk about what it's like to work at Hodinkee as the business scales up, as well as the specifics of her role, creating limited editions and collaborative pieces. Unfortunately, she's too good at her job and managed not to tell us anything about Hodinkee's upcoming limited editions, but still, this long interview with Cara is practically required listening. This week's episode is brought to you by TAG Heuer. Listen in to hear Felix and Andy chat about the brand's partnership with Porsche and the relationship between car people and watch people. Welcome to our fifth episode where we finish what we started in our last episode by unpacking how the Patriarchy affects women's views on, and relationships with, other women. The writer and poet Michael Rosen joins Aasmah Mir and Suzy Klein. He shares his discoveries of a lost family found, the importance of play, and tells us how to eat a bagel. Back by popular demand: the cook Julia Georgallis, gives advice on ‘How to eat your Christmas tree’. Incurable romantic, William Cash, explains why he has a treasure trove of more than a thousand love letters, archived in a pig shed, and how restoring his family home helped him deal with heartbreak. Inspired by her experience of suddenly losing her mother, who ‘took her precious memories with her’, Bryher Scudamore set up an online template – autodotbiography. She describes how inheriting a wallet containing letters written by her great-grandfather, led to discovering surprising stories of his life just after the American Civil War. And Frank Skinner shares his Inheritance Tracks - Winter Wonderland, performed by Dean Martin and George Formby singing Why Women Don’t Like Me. Producer: Louise Corley Editor: Eleanor Garland

Ever since Google fired James Damore for “advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace,” those of us working in tech have been trying to figure out what we can and cannot say on the subject of diversity. You might imagine that a university would be more open to discussing his ideas, but my experience suggests otherwise. For the last ten months I have been discussing this issue at the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering where I work. I have tried to understand why Damore’s opinions generated such anger and have struggled to decide what I want to do in response. As a result of my attempts to discuss this, our mailing list known as ‘diversity-allies’ is now a moderated list to prevent “nuanced, and potentially hurtful, discussion.” Instead, I have been encouraged to participate in face-to-face meetings that have often been tense, but which have helped me to understand where others are coming from.
