This week, we're focused on modern watches that will command respect in the coming decades. As you'll see, we have some caveats. We chose relatively affordable pieces instead of haute horlogerie models. And we both chose three, for a total of six watches. We hope you enjoy the show!HandgelenkskontrolleWe kick off our show with a bit of travel talk, but we quickly shift to the screen. Shows including I Will Find You, Lanterns, DTF St. Louis, and Half Man get mentions. Then, Balazs brings up an upcoming auction for the 1998 Game 3 NBA Finals jersey from Michael Jordan. It's listed on Joopiter and will be up for auction with an estimate of $10 to $15 million! We end our banter with a mention of Instagram user @dewesyy, who is filming the cobbling together of a Porsche 911 Targa from two rough beaters. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing his trusty Rolex Submariner 14060M from 2011. Balazs is sporting his Ming 22.01 GMT Kyoto.The modern watches we'll still be talking about in 20 yearsWe kick off our main topic by mentioning the one and only Bvlgari Octo Finissimo. While this watch may not fit every wrist, it's a stunning object. Perhaps Bvlgari will never take this watch out of production, or maybe it will evolve into something different. Still, there's no denying that the current watches are arresting. We think they'll still be grabbing attention in the long run.For Mike's first pick, the original 42mm Tudor Pelagos in black, blue, or LHD still stands out as a landmark watch. More than the Black Bay, these were non-retro releases and were the first titanium "Rolex." Aside from moving to an in-house caliber, the watch has barely changed since its 2012 debut in 2012. We'd be surprised if the model doesn't change soon, but the original will always be special.Next up, we mention the Ming 17-series. It's hard to believe, but Mike first reviewed a 17.06 Slate back in 2019. This started his love affair with the brand, and it was ultimately contagious. Now, Balazs is hooked too! The 17.09 was a watershed moment for both of us, as we each own one.Technical powerhousesFrom a technical perspective, it's hard to fault the Sinn EZM collection. These pieces are the brand's most focused and hardcore tool watches, made for specific jobs. Models like the EZM 1 are the most famous, but all of them are worth owning. Due to the innovation and design, we're confident that all of these editions will be discussed in the future.Balazs brings up the Grand Seiko SLGH005 White Birch from 2021, a watch that created a craze for the upscale Japanese brand. People went nuts for the White Birch when it came out, and any time GS releases another silvery-white dial, there's a similar fervor. The 40mm steel reference comes equipped with the brand's satisfying and mesmerizing 9SA5 Hi-Beat automatic movement. Yes, Grand Seiko makes a lot of watches, but there will only be one original White Birch.Finally, Mike suggests that the Nomos Club Sport Neomatik Worldtimer is one of the modern watches that will be a future classic. Honestly, we forget how impressive Nomos is with its in-house movements and escapements. The latest Worldtimer is a cool watch available in several flavors. Para investigar el incidente se recurrió a un modelo chino de pesos abiertos, después de que diferentes sistemas estadounidenses no pudieran colaborar por sus restricciones de seguridad. Al mismo tiempo, AMD ha acordado invertir hasta 5.000 millones de dólares en Anthropic; Google prepara un gasto anual en infraestructura de hasta 205.000 millones; y OpenAI ha presentado Presence, una plataforma de agentes capaces de atender clientes, consultar sistemas corporativos y ejecutar determinadas acciones. Im Jahr 2021 erklärte das Bundesverfassungsgericht in einem historischen Beschluss das Klimaschutzgesetz für teilweise verfassungswidrig. Die Entscheidung machte weltweit Schlagzeilen und etablierte einen neuen Gedanken: Klimaschutz ist kein abstraktes politisches Ziel, sondern dient auch dem Schutz der durch das Grundgesetz geschützten Freiheitsrechte der Menschen und Bürger. Der Klima-Beschluss und seine Begründung Doch was genau hat das BVerfG entschieden, und welche Auswirkungen hatte der Beschluss am Ende? Darüber sprechen wir mit Prof. Dr. Dr. Felix Ekardt, dessen Ansichten in seiner Habilitationsschrift die Entscheidung des BVerfG maßgeblich prägten. Mit Prof. Ekardt sprechen wir u.a. darüber, wie die Verfassungsbeschwerde zustande kam und welche Rolle der im Grundgesetz verankerte Schutz natürlicher Lebensgrundlagen gem. Art. 20a GG spielte (Spoiler: erstaunlich wenig). Doppelte Freiheitsgefährdung durch die Klimarkrise Entscheidend war vielmehr ein Gedanke, den Prof. Ekardt maßgeblich entwickelt hat, die sogenannte doppelte Freiheitsgefährdung. Die Idee dahinter ist, dass unsere Freiheitsrechte, also das Recht, selbstbestimmt zu leben, durch den menschengemachte Klimakatastrophe gleich auf zwei Wegen bedroht werden. Erstens direkt, weil die Zerstörung unserer natürlichen Lebensgrundlagen unsere Entfaltungsmöglichkeiten einschränkt. Und zweitens indirekt, weil ein zu langes Abwarten dazu führt, dass der Staat irgendwann drastische Maßnahmen ergreifen muss – mit dem Risiko, dass dabei autoritäre Strukturen entstehen. Unser Gast: Prof. Dr. Dr. Felix Ekardt, LL.M., M.A. ist apl. Professor für Öffentliches Recht und Rechtsphilosophie an der Universität Rostock sowie Gründer und Leiter der Forschungsstelle Nachhaltigkeit und Klimapolitik in Leipzig und Berlin. Seit 2013 ist er zudem ehrenamtlicher Landesvorsitzender des BUND Sachsen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Recht, Ethik, Politik und Transformationsbedingungen der Nachhaltigkeit. Er war maßgeblich an der erfolgreichen Klimaklage vor dem BVerfG 2021 beteiligt, in der das Klimaschutzgesetz für teilweise verfassungswidrig erklärt und die 1,5-Grad-Grenze als verfassungsrechtlich bindend eingestuft wurde. 2024 folgte eine weitere Klimaklage sowie, weltweit erstmalig, eine Biodiversitätsklage gegen Bundesregierung und Bundestag. Zu seinen wichtigsten Publikationen zählen „Theorie der Nachhaltigkeit“ (4. Aufl., Nomos), „Sustainability“ (2. Aufl., Springer) und „Postfossile Freiheit: Warum Demokratie, Umweltschutz, Wohlstand und Frieden nur gemeinsam gelingen“ (Bonifatius). Darüber hinaus diskutieren wir, wie sich der Klimawandel als Ursache künftiger Schäden rechtlich nachweisen lässt, welche internationalen Auswirkungen der Klimabeschluss bis hin zu EGMR und IGH entfaltet hat und warum der Klimawandel nicht das einzige Umweltproblem ist, das verfassungsrechtlich eingeklagt wird. Schließlich stellen wir die Frage, ob man direkt gegen die fossile Industrie klagen kann und ob die Natur selbst eigene Rechte haben sollte, die sie vor Gericht geltend machen könnte. Fishkin explains that law and politics are inseparable: while law operates as a specialized language with its own norms, it is always shaped by political context. Recent trends at the Supreme Court of the United States suggest courts may uphold controversial outcomes through strained reasoning, raising questions about whether legal norms can meaningfully constrain political power. Fishkin highlights an unprecedented recent federal strategy of using research funding as leverage, where grant cancellations and civil rights settlements are used to pressure universities to change hiring, admissions, and faculty decisions. Because universities fear retaliation, many hesitate to sue, though institutions like Harvard University and faculty-led groups have challenged these actions, with courts sometimes blocking grant cancellations, especially when First Amendment claims are involved.Fishkin also discusses the aftermath of the 2024 pro-Palestinian encampment protests at UCLA, where a lawsuit alleged that Jewish students were excluded from campus spaces. UCLA quickly settled, likely to reduce conflict, but Fishkin argues the decision backfired by inviting further federal scrutiny and financial penalties while forfeiting the chance to build a stronger factual defense. As a Jewish faculty member who passed the encampment daily, Fishkin observed disruption but did not witness antisemitic exclusion, emphasizing a significant gap between lived reality and media-driven narratives. Viral videos and political rhetoric helped shape public perception, fueling lawsuits and federal intervention despite incomplete or misleading evidence. He concludes by reflecting on a broader crisis of truth in American politics, where false or exaggerated claims can influence public policy.Joseph Fishkin is a Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law, where he teaches and researches a wide range of topics, including employment discrimination law, election law, constitutional law, education law, fair housing law, poverty and inequality, and distributive justice. Before joining the UCLA faculty he taught for a decade at the University of Texas School of Law, where he was the Marrs McLean Professor in Law; he was also a visiting professor at Yale Law School. Fishkin received his B.A. in Ethics, Politics, and Economics, summa cum laude, at Yale, his J.D. at Yale Law School, and his D. Phil. In Politics at Oxford, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. Fishkin's latest book, The Anti-Oligarchy Constitution: Reconstructing the Economic Foundations of American Democracy (with Willy Forbath), was recently published by Harvard University Press. His first book, Bottlenecks: A New Theory of Equal Opportunity, winner of the North American Society for Social Philosophy Book Award, was published by Oxford University Press.
