In this episode, we look back at a week containing a migraine, the end (finally!) of Kristyna's sickness, a hectic Thursday, and Lauren's dad's book event. And: The beginning of the most stressful part of the semester. Slowly but surely, all of the deadlines are getting closer and closer and stress-levels are starting to increase. It's very exciting... For the main part, we decided to talk about a topic that is outside of what we usually focus on. We talk about our relationship with our bodies, food, and sports, what we've struggled with, what we've learned, and where we're at now. Insecurities regarding your body and a complicated relationship with food and sports is something that most people deal with at some point in their lives and in some shape or form. That why we figured it would be an interesting topic to discuss and we wanted share our experience with it. This episode ends with our bookclub, as always. Lauren made pretty much zero progress with her book. But Kristyna finished reading the book 'Subtweet' and really enjoyed it. We also talk about 'Love is Blind' and, of course, share our songs of the week! We hope you enjoy listening to this episode. Tag Paid Go - EP 55: SubTweet I've decided to start a new show segment on a pretty big hot topic. This week I'm gonna give you my take on a recent Netflix animated series that's all the buzz right now. My featured song is called The Final One. Listen to past episodes and songs at: www.tagpaidgo.com Sign up for the newsletter - news.tagpaidgo.com ----more---- TRANSCRIPT Have you ever wanted to record a podcast like a pro? Sometimes it takes more than professional mics like the hi pro 3023 gain master Omni directional Microphonic condenser. Before I was a professional podcaster I struggled with everything from recording to the internet. But then I found Ranken Mulberry's 15 Steps to Effective thinking and Power. With Mulberry's 24 tape series I was able to learn to overcome some of my biggest life challenges - everything from podcast recording to my new love of dry ramen. 5 yrs ago I was nobody. And with Ranken mulberry's 15 steps to effective thinking and power, I'm now a podcast writer/producer and host. I also LOVE dry ramen. Welcome to another episode of tag paid go. In this episode I'm gonna launch my NEW Series where I'll review a bunch of shows I think I'll hate. Full disclosure: my reviews are based ONLY on my opinion and I probably won't watch most of the shows I'm reviewing beforehand. I'm gonna base MY reviews on what other internet reviewers are saying and just amplify the most common viewpoints. This way I can be amongst the elite in terms of movie reviewers. And quite honestly it surely won't hurt my streams. I'll break that Weekly Influencer top 10 for sure! Stay tuned cause my first topic will be the classic cartoon series EVERYONE is talking about right now - Lego City Adventures. Some are saying it isn't true to the classic lego brick mentality. Others are saying they don't even show a real city even though it was advertised in the trailer. My favorite is that they don't even focus on the heroic Sgt Duke even though he's one of the main characters. I'll give you MY full take on this show by reading a long list of opinions on why other adults hate this show made for kids. But before we get to this hot button topic I wanna thank our sponsor Big Country's Homestyle Dry Ramen - the only ramen you can eat dry and still enjoy the moist flavor of home cooked ramen on a stove. Our dry ramen comes in individually sealed packages that contain flavor packs already included. Just open up the package, pour in the seasoning and enjoy it right out the bag. Big Country's Homestyle Dry ramen is instant and perfect for your on the go lifestyle. Try big country's Homestyle dry ramen today! Al that dry pasta talk has made me thirsty for a song. Sit back with a warm cup of Imperial Silver Needles White Tea sweetened with orange blossom honey and enjoy. This songs called the final one Well that does it for this weeks episode of tag paid go. I'd like to thank my sponsor Big Country's Homestyle dry ramen. Our ramen NOW comes in bite sized pieces. No more noodle bricks like those other guys. Try Big Country's Homestyle Dry Ramen Today! I'd like to also thank all of you who have returned for another adventure. Be sure to follow @tagpaidgo on Instagram,Twitter and NOW tik tok. It's episode 14! Kris's favourite number 14! We made it, friends! This week, Kris regales us with stories of P-Town and Tara stirs the pot by asking which is gayer: P-Town or Palm Springs, and talking about an article with the best way to cook a cicada. It's a strange adolescence we're having. You know, trying new things, new experiences...but cicadas? For official recommendations, Kris brings us Life in Death by M. Ullrich (Bold Strokes Books) and Tara cheats by saying she's recommending one book (Laziness Does Not Exist by Devon Price), only to sneak in two more (F*ck No! by Sarah Knight and Burnout by Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski). The girls discuss #TheSubtweet, our first novel by a trans author - #VivekShraya (@vivekshraya – follow her for fierceness, hair goals, and playsuit game that has forced us to face our preconceptions of femininity. Throw in a good dose of white privilege marginalizing talented af brown women, world-building songs that exist in real life and a touch of feminist theory and you've got yourself quite the immersive book my friends. Each of the 333 chapters is dropped on the exact minute of every single new moon and full moon until September 1, 2031. 3 Books is an Apple "Best Of" award-winning show and 100% ad-free, commercial-free, sponsor-free, and interruption-free. For more info check out: https://www.3books.co/ Chapter Description: I was browsing through a book store a few years ago when I stumbled on a small purple book called I’m Afraid of Men written by Vivek Shraya. Hadn’t heard of the book! Hadn’t heard of Vivek Shraya! But the provocative title grabbed me so I flipped it over. What was on the back? A simple big solo statement: “And men are afraid of me.” I opened and kept reading the jacket. Here’s what it said: “A trans artist explores how masculinity was imposed on her as a boy and continues to haunt her as a girl, and how we might reimagine gender for the twenty-first century. Vivek Shraya has good reason to be afraid. Throughout her life she has endured acts of cruelty and aggression for being too feminine as a boy and for not being feminine enough as a girl. In order to survive her childhood she had to learn how to convincingly perform masculinity. As an adult she makes daily compromises to steel herself against everything from verbal attacks to heartbreak. Now, with raw honesty, Shraya delivers an important record of the cumulative damage caused by misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia, releasing trauma from a body that has always refused to assimilate.” Needless to say, I was intrigued. I picked up this small book and it transfixed me. It showed me a view and a lens and a perspective that I had no familiarity with and was opening my mind to a culture and people living with so much oppression. I ended up buying more of Vivek’s books, including her wonderful children's book A Boy & The Bindi. And when her traveling live memoiry stageshow How To Fail As A Pop Star visited Toronto my wife Leslie and I bought tickets and joined the giant standing ovation. Vivek Shraya is an artist whose body of work crosses the boundaries of music, literature, visual art, theatre, and film. That bestselling book I’m Afraid of Men was heralded by Vanity Fair as “cultural rocket fuel,” and her album with Queer Songbook Orchestra, Part‑Time Woman, was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. She is one half of the music duo Too Attached and the founder of the publishing imprint VS. Books. A six-time (!) Lambda Literary Award finalist, Vivek was a Pride Toronto Grand Marshal, was featured on The Globe and Mail’s Best Dressed list, and has received honours from The Writers’ Trust of Canada and The Publishing Triangle. And, as if that’s not enough, she’s also Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Calgary! And now, right in the throes of her book launch for her fiction debut (!) The Subtweet, I had the pleasure of chatting with Vivek from Calgary about a slew of topics I think you’ll enjoy such as how parents can avoid snuffing out their children’s gender creativity and how we might think about using pronouns. Vivek is able to navigate many complex topics—topics that most people are not even willing to discuss—with a comfort and clarity that shows a deep level of thinking and which is the partial product of the hardships she’s endured and navigated throughout her life. I find her and her work incredibly brave, vulnerable, and important. I loved talking to her and hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. And now … let’s go! What You'll Learn: How do you conduct a virtual book tour? How can parents avoid snuffing out the gender creativity in their children? How did colonization induce transphobia? What are the pros and cons of using labels? How might we think about using pronouns? What are some issues with the most common trans narratives? How do we learn to see cultural lenses that we have lived with our whole lives? What is an artist’s real job? And, of course, what are the incredible Vivek Shraya’s 3 most formative books? "So much of my work, especially as I move forward, has been thinking about lateral violence or how we buy into white supremacy in the ways that we don't know how to support each other." — Vivek ShrayaSeason finale chat with Vivek Shraya, a writer and multi-disciplinary artist from Edmonton who spent a number of years in Toronto and recently returned to Alberta to teach at the University of Calgary. I caught Vivek when she was in Toronto to premiere her recent solo stage show, How To Fail As A Pop Star, a deeply honest account of the dream that didn't come true. Vivek's best-known book might be 2018's I'm Afraid Of Men, but she also has a new book out called The Subtweet, that's about a fierce and ~very online~ friendship between two brown girls who love music. It's funny — we ran out of time talking about the play and failure and Vivek's shift from Toronto to Calgary life, so we didn't explicitly talk about the book but I think our chat ends up riffing on the themes and dynamics that play out in The Subtweet. A frank conversation from a Canlit darling, with just enough sweetness that I hope will hold you over until we meet again.Vivek: vivekshraya.comTheme song: "Dark Beings" by LALOriginal music provided by Jahmal PadmoreSupport this work
