In this episode: it's not easy it's simple, the flywheel, being consistent, skilling up, the gift of time, and what money can provide. This week we are joined by founder and creator of ConvertKit, Nathan Barry to discuss his entrepreneurial journey and how the fundamentals of FI helped drive him to create and build a successful business. We often discuss the importance of skill stacking when on the journey to FI, but we sometimes forget to touch on the trial and error that comes with learning and creating something new for yourself. While you can't expect to start something new and be faced with little to no challenges, this leaves more opportunities for personal growth and important lessons! So whether it's learning a new side hustle or starting a business, it's important to remember that you may not always know how to do something perfect when you begin. You should not count yourself out or give up when you don't see instant results, but rather reach out to new communities and take the lessons in stride! Stay tuned to the end of the interview where I'll give you some actionable insights that I learned from my guest. These insights are also in the show notes. As always, thanks for listening. Now on to my guest for today, Josh Adler, a serial entrepreneur and founder of Convrtx. Convrtx offers help to startups in four ways: through strategic support, help in raising capital, product development, and launch strategy.  Josh comes from a family of successful entrepreneurs in Canada. He started out as young as eleven in accounting and worked his way through various aspects of business, which has given him unique insights into how to build and run a company. He attended the University of Toronto for business and MIT, where he earned a certificate in cybersecurity. He has launched several other businesses, including Open Advisor, a support network to help startups globally and in particular in developing countries.  In our talk, Josh shares insights into the ways in which Dubai, where he now lives, contributes to a flourishing culture of entrepreneurship. The government offers financial support for people who go from working for the government to launching a startup. When COVID hit, providing free, regular testing along with tight restrictions around people who tested positive helped the area, which relies heavily on tourism, to stay resilient.   Now, let's get better together. Actionable Insights While Josh had the privilege of starting early by working for his family company, he stresses that ultimately it's about putting in the work and continuing to do so until you see results. Though it might not seem like a great time to try to raise money for a business, Josh says it's actually a good time to do so, especially for startups in the early stages. There's a lot of investment to be had for founders in this stage.  While not previously an avid reader, Josh now reads two books a week, saying it's important to learn from others as much as possible. Below are the four books Josh recommends for all entrepreneurs, noting that these cover the important areas that entrepreneurs should focus on: The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation To Create Radically Successful Businesses, by Eric Ries The Titanic Effect: Successfully Navigating the Uncertainties That Sink Most Startups, by Tood Saxton, M. Kim Saxton, and Michael Cloran The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future, by Chris Guillebeau Secrets of Sand Hill Road: Venture Capital and How To Get It, by Scott Kupor  Links to Explore Further Convrtx Convrtx on LinkedIn Josh Adler on LinkedIn Convrtx on Facebook Keep In Touch Book or Blog or Twitter or LinkedIn or JSYPR Learn more about your ad choices. How can you tell if you're in lust or in love? Is "love at first sight" real? When is the right time to say "I love you" in a relationship? And how do you keep love alive long-term? Today's episode is all about the science of love, and we're going to talk about so many important and fascinating questions! My guest is none other than "The Love Doctor" herself, Dr. Terri Orbuch. Terri is a distinguished professor at Oakland University and a research scientist at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. She has been studying the science of love and relationships for more than three decades and her latest book is called Secrets to Surviving Your Children's Love Relationships. We cover a lot of ground in this show, including: The four signs that distinguish love from lust. How to get the lust back in your relationship after the initial passion starts to decline. The truth about the "5 love languages" (is there any actually any science behind this idea?). Tips for maintaining happy, healthy, loving relationships for the long haul. When it's the right time to make your relationship "official" and to say "I love you" to a partner. When too much closeness becomes a problem, and how to maintain your individuality in a relationship. Tips for dialing down the pressure on Valentine's Day and enjoying a stress-free holiday. How parents can help their kids to cultivate healthy relationships. This is such an important (and fun!) episode! I am so excited to introduce you to my guest for today's episode. Hannah Spilva is the co-founder of the gorgeous flower delivery company, LVLY and together with her co-founder Verity Tuck, they are changing the shape of the gifting industry in Australia.Y'all know that I don't align myself with many brands. I get sent a lot of requests to review products, try services and talk about them on my Instagram, but I'm really intentional with who I align myself with.LVLY flowers are definitely a company that I am so proud to have as our first official sponsor of The Queen Of Confidence. I have loved working with them and today on the podcast I wanted to pick Hannah's brains about how she created such a well known brand in what is a relatively short amount of time.Hannah and Verity have been so intentional with how they have built the LVLY brand since the beginning and when COVID threw a curveball, they were able to adapt quickly and have seen incredible growth over the last 18 months. We all know that growth is fantastic, but is also brings with it a huge set of challenges. Keeping up with demand, hiring the right people, courier issues due to restrictions...it's a lot! Hannah and I talk through how LVLY flowers was born and why this business is so important to her. She talks about those normal feelings we all have around self-doubt and how she's been able to build resilience to achieve amazing things.I'm so honoured to have Hannah on the show today and for all you business ladies out there, you are going to learn so much from this conversation!

Derek gives us unique perspectives on wealth and success. He has a cool and unique background as a musician, successful entrepreneur, and happy minimalist. Episode 142: Author and entrepreneur, Derek Sivers describes his approach to living wealthy and happily whether earning a little or a lot. Guest Biography Derek Sivers is an American writer, musician, programmer and entrepreneur best known for being the founder and former president of CD Baby. More than anything, he wants to make lots of stuff. Derek enjoys working alone for 12 hours a day/6 days a week in his pursuit of making articles, books, websites, music, companies, systems, apps, and especially new ideas. He is known for saying no to almost everything so he can have lots of time for making. At the age of 14, Derek decided to be a successful musician. He was single-focused obsessed on this from the age of 14 to 29, waking up early to practice, staying up late to write, saying no to all distractions, and reading whatever he could to improve. At age 29, Derek "accidentally" started the company CD Baby that helped his musician friends sell CDs online which eventually became the largest seller of independent music on the Internet. In 2008, he sold the company; and as 100 percent owner, he utilized a strategy to donate the proceeds of $22 million to charity. Derek continues to learn lots of stuff, especially different approaches to thinking and living. He finds inspiration in reading non-fiction, living in many places around the world, and cutting out most things that most normal people do — like hanging out, watching TV, and partying. His writing, thoughts, and book notes can be found at www.sivers.org. In this episode, you'll learn: The difference between living a highly focused life vs making time to ponder and think. Interesting thoughts on money, wealth, and defining what's enough. Great book recommendations on the topic of money. Author and entrepreneur, Derek Sivers describes his approach to living wealthy and happily whether earning a little or a lot. Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcasting platform — and while you’re there, please leave us a like or a review!Next week, we’re releasing a little stocking stuffer for our Christmas Day episode, but we’re back in business on January 1, with the seasonally appropriate (at least in title) Born in Ice, by none other than the queen herself, Nora Roberts. Read Born in Ice at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo or your local indie.Question 1: Beth from Milwaukee asked, "I'm going to Iceland in December for my 10th wedding anniversary! I obviously need a book that has snow/cold and using body heat and -ahem- other activities for warmth. Bonus points if a volcano or other geological feature is a part of the story! Sub genre is not important, and yes I'm aware of the Ice Planet Barbarians."Our recommendations: From the deep recesses of Jen's brain, the only romance she can think of with a volcano, Eden Burning by Elizabeth Lowell. And that's from the 80s, so fair warning that it's likely to have problematic elements. When it comes to snuggly, warm, only one bed romances, you just need to use the internet! But Jen did write a piece about Only One Bed for Kirkus, which you should read. In the meantime, go watch Joe versus the Volcano, and then talking about Hawaii reminded Sarah of some bananas sounding book by Anne Stuart called Tangled Lies. But a few snowy romances: Beary Christmas Baby by Sasha Devlin or How the Dukes Stole Christmas.Question 2: Emily from Washington D.C. want our opinion aobut "the BEST star crossed lovers trope (it always gets me so good)."Our Recommendations: The reason Sarah thinks that star-crossed lovers have to end up unhappy is Romeo and Juliet, of course. But Jen thinks you should try Luck of the Draw by Kate Clayborn and Sarah recommends Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan, but comes with a whole suitcase of content warnings for domestic violence. In the interim, Jen read and recommends Forbidden Promises by Synithia Williams, the heroine falls in love with her sister's ex-husband! And of course, coming in the summer of 2020 comes Daring and the Duke by Sarah, which will also work. But you have to wait!Question 3: Megumi from San Antonio, TX is looking for "a contemporary of someone not Scottish going to Scotland and finding love. (Maybe England but mostly Scotland)"Our Recommendations: Jen lost her mind and said Unfixable by Tessa Bailey, but Willa is a heroine who goes to Ireland. She thinks it still counts. Sarah recommends a novella by Sophie Jordan called "In a Stranger's Bed" which was a Goldilocks retelling published in the Glamour anthology but which is currently unavailable so come on Sophie, get it together and put your stories up because they are ON FIRE. A few others you can try: A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole, the Under the Kilt series by Melissa Blue, Getting Hot with the Scot by Melonie Johnson, and Ten Days With the Highlander by Hayson Manning. Also, we didn't know what Adriana Herrera had up her sleeve when we recorded, but Mangos & Misteltoe is ADORABLE, and features to delicious Dominican heroines falling in love on a Scottish Baking Show. It's also a perfect holiday romance!Question 4: Becca wants "a funny contemporary, a true romcom, minimal trauma."Our recommendations: Jen thinks it doesn't exist. Sarah recommends going old school to Jennifer Crusie or Susan Elizabeth Phillips. If it helps, you should know that later this season, we'll be talking about Bet Me and Nobody's Baby But Mine. After we recorded, Sarah realized she should have recommended Christina Lauren, who she adores, and who she believes is one of the few authors writing real RomCom. If you haven't read Josh & Hazel's Guide to Not Dating, it's a very funny, very romantic friends-to-lovers romance! "What happened to romantic comedy" is an existential question for our time.Question 5: Laurel from NC wants a book that "Has marriage of convenience, preferably historical."Our recommendations: Sarah says Sherry Thomas better than everyone and recommends Ravishing the Heiress. Jen thinks The Duke Buys a Bride by Sophie Jordan might work. Sarah points out that in order to qualify, the marriage has to happen pretty early in the story. The marriage has to be part of the plot the whole time. Once again, there are so many of these we had trouble thinking of them on the spot, but in hindsight, Sarah would like you not to miss Amalie Howard's The Beast of Beswick or Scarlet Peckham's The Duke I Tempted. Bonus story from Jen about a Sherry Thomas YA book about Mulan called The Magnolia Sword.Question 6: Cara from Finland wants a book that "Has chosen families strongly included in the plot. Extra points if it's enemies-to-lovers with the heroine's family ready to kick the pining-but-unfortunately-dumbass hero's butt."Our recommendations: Whoa! That's a lot of asks all at once. Just reread IAD, Cara! This is the plot of Sarah's book A Scot in the Dark, so that's a good place to start. Lots of rock star romances have chosen family, try Kristen Callihan's series, and Managed will be a book that blooded Jen later this season. It's not linked via heroines, but Elle Kennedy's Hotter than Ever is bonkers sexy, a MMF menage, and has lots of found Navy SEAL family. In historicals, there are lots of sisterhood/brotherhood books. Try the Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas, or Lorraine Heath's Scoundrels of St. James!Question 7: Krystal from New Jersey is looking for "Childhood friends to lovers - historical! Where the Male is titled and the woman is not!"Our recommendations: There are so many that will work here. Sarah recommends Tessa Dare's first series, the Wanton Dairymaids (!!!) should work, try Godess of the Hunt. After recording, of course, a bunch of books came to mind! Try Kelly Bowen's You're the Earl That I Want, Vanessa Riley's The Butterfly Bride, and Loretta Chase's Last Night's Scandal.Question 8: Rosalie from the Chicago suburbs wants books she "can recommend to my 15 year old son. Have thought about Sarina Bowen’s Ivy Years. Although LJ Shen “Sinner of Saints” series is high school, seems too dark/gritty and I think he would not be able to suspend reality for some of the story lines given he is the same age."Our Recommendations: Sarah thinks the Sarina Bowen series you mentioned should work just fine. Adult romances that are adventure stories might work are the Hidden Legacy seriesby Ilona Andrews and Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik. Some actual YA Romance that Jen likes are The Way You Make me Feel and I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which are both by Maurene Goo. One of Jen's favorite YA books of all time is called The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks. She also recommneds Not if I Save You First by Ally Carter. Some sports romances we recommend are the WAGS series by Naima Simone, especially Scoring Off the Field. Finally, The Deal by Elle Kennedy might be a good choice.Question 9: Jemma from Texas is looking for "Found family. Also with lots of good food descriptions. Not necessarily a chef romance though (they stress me out because chefs stay up so late at night; ugh, who does that?)"Our recommendations: This is such a perfect question for Sarah. She recommends the Recipe for Love series by Louisa Edwards. Another series by the same author is called the Rising Star Chefs. The Opposite of You by Rachel Higginson will work. Finally, American Dreamer by Adriana Herrera, and a series by Sabrina Sol. In hindsight, Sarah basically only recommended books with chefs in them. She's sorry. She has a problem.Question 10: Sara from Albuquerque wants a "Bodyguard trope where the person being guarded does NOT spend the whole book trying to escape the bodyguard because he/she doesn't think there is any danger even though it's incredibly obvious to everyone else. Bonus if the bodyguard character is female."Our recommendations: Jen recommends Sexy/Dangerous (female bodyguard) by Beverly Jenkins, which is fabulous. Nana Malone has a few, one in her royals seris, and another is Bodyguard to the Billionaire (female bodyguard) -- also, listen to Nana talk about Royal Romance on an interstitial last season!. And! Try HelenKay Dimon's Leave Me Breathless(female bodyguard), Katee Robert's Thalanian Dynasty series (male bodyguard/MMF menage) and Anna Zabo's Reverb (trans male bodyguard).Question 11: Molly from Washington has an AMA question about how to organize her Kindle books. She is also looking for a book that "Features a Grumpy/terse older brother’s friend (or older brother of friend) with smart mouth heroine, bonus points for SUPER HOT, some sort of road trip, or problem they have to solve much to their reluctance (trapped on a desert island?) basically Bowen and Mari

Music fuels a lot of episodes around here. Today's show is no different. It was sparked by a song that Drew and Ellie Holcomb recorded on their last record, Dragons (August 2019). Track 3, "But I'll Never Forget The Way You Make Me Feel." Drew and Ellie met in college. They're both 37. They've been married for about 13 years. I don't know much more than that, except what we can discern from the music they create together. I rather think that after 13 years they're still in love with each other and their music. It's a pretty sweet gig they've got going. I've got my own sweet gig going. And today I'm going to tell you all about it. Okay, maybe I'm not going to tell you ALL about it, but I'm going to tell you enough about it to spark your own reflections into your own life. Especially the most important people in your life. I intended this show - today's show - to be something different. I even teased it over at the private Facebook group. Love, Laughter and Levity. The more I worked on it the worse things got. I kept getting stuck. And it's not because those topics don't have a heavy influence in my life. I'm not really sure why it was so hard. I started noodling around with the last topic, levity. Maybe that was a poor strategy. It's a pretty easy subject for me really because in spite of my sober demeanor I rather enjoy snarkiness, sarcasm, and levity. And I laugh pretty regularly. I was walking, as I am wont to do in the wee hours and listening to tunes. At some point, I activated Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors latest record, Dragons. First up, a tune called, "Family." It's a short little lively song. 2 minutes 20 seconds. It's a great video featuring many of Nashville's musicians and their family. Well, that's all she wrote. I was stuck now on a different course for this episode. I instantly went to the first L word of the proposed title, LOVE. I'm a hopeless romantic. And very sentimental. Always have been. There is no cure. Warning this episode is going to lean into all this so if that's not your thing, I get it. It's a shame 'cause you're really missing out on some of life's most terrific elements in my opinion. But that's okay. If you want to hit STOP and catch the next episode, I'll try to understand even though it won't be easy! :D By the time track 3 launched into my earbuds, a song I'd listened to many, many times before...I was a mess. "But I'll Never Forget The Way You Make Me Feel." Here's a 37-year-old couple singing about growing old together. Him, unable to remember specific details perhaps, but always able to remember the way she makes him feel. We're 62 now. Me and Rhonda. We are growing older together. We're pushing hard on entering year 42 of our marriage. Year 45 of being a couple. Being 17 or 18 and in love is pretty terrific. Being 62 and just as in love is even better. It was likely a Saturday, but I don't remember that detail. Guess I'm a lot like Drew's song. But that's about the only thing I don't remember. We were out at a park at the far end southern end of Highland Road in Baton Rouge. Flying kites. At the northern end of Highland Road is the entrance to LSU. I lived somewhere between LSU and the park off Highland Road. Rhonda had come down from Ft. Worth to visit. We were already a couple. I was mad about her and getting more so by the day. Attending classes at LSU was drudgery except for handwriting daily letters to take by the Student Union to drop into the mail. And checking my mailbox daily for her letters. It was a habit we maintained for over 2 years. Such was life in the 70's when you don't have Internet, cell phones or social media. The music that weekend was a heavy rotation of Poco's album, Crazy Eyes. I was a bigtime Richie Furay fan, the leader of Poco. He had the talent to pull off a 10-minute title track song in what we then called progressive country music. My eyes were crazy for this Texas girl.

In this episode we look at the ripple effect of the young Waffle House hero here in Nashville. It seems that good deeds lead to good coming your way. How can we plug in that principle in our own lives? Episode #612 May 18, 2018 Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: 1. I've never liked a job I've had. 2.  My only dream is to become a housewife and have a side business 3. I'm in a situation and need out asap. My hands are swollen, achy and my thumb and index fingers are tender and bruised on the tips. 4. I lost a part of my soul just over 2 years ago when I was told I wasn't needed anymore after 30 years at the same place of employment.  More questions Quotation:   Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. Luke 6:38 (NLT) Click To Tweet Call to Action:   How could you give a bucketful away today – that just might open the door to a truckload of benefits to come back to you? Meet Tara Swiger, marketing expert, author and host of Explore Your Enthusiasm podcast. Tara works with makers and artists to create a sustainable, lovable businesses. She does this through her books, the weekly podcast, online classes, and her in-person workshops. She leads adventures for makers who want to explore your own definition of success! In this episode, Tara shares tips and strategies from her new book, Map Your Business a workbook of exercises designed to help you create your own personal blueprint to reach goals that are important to you, and how you can use it to define success, set goals and make a plan that you can stick with!  In this book, Tara takes an integrative approach, encouraging you to align your life and business, and she invites you to take a look at your progress each quarter to make sure you’re on track.  Episode highlights Tara created her own job instead of "a business." Don't just talk about it ... do it if that's what you want to do!  How there's a big difference between the planning stage and actually having started a business After you start, what's next. Now where do you go?  In 2009 Tara left her day job and made it known publicly. She shares why it's important to let the world know Her first class was a marketing path to help creative business owners How the Map Your Business book is not only for business, but how to "draw your universe" The map-making process that Tara shares can be applied to any part of your life The difference between a task and a project - and why understanding this difference is crucial to your success Why making a mindmap helps to understand things visually and in a linear way Why Map Your Business was created like a map and how it came from a series of pdf workbooks that she created for her students How the book helps you to assess your goals monthly and quarterly, and how to pivot if you need to Tara gives Kara advice about how to do a monthly review in her new business-- and explains that this is advice everyone can follow There isn't a "right way" to start a creative business, you need to find what's right for you Tara shares her biggest struggle - a combination of having unrealistic expectations and not getting derailed when things don't go right. Tara explains that there is a way to systematize the overwhelm - make a check list out of it  The power or making a daily list even if it feels redundant Why it's OK to give yourself permission to say NO to getting certain things done Why being a maker contributes to the quality of Tara's daily life and how knitting socks helps her to stay sane during car rides! English Paper Piecing #epp is another passion of Tara's. She loves it so much because this craft is portable much like knitting How replying to a tweet, led to her being featured in the book bestselling book, Crush It! by Gary Vaynerchuk  Before you think about the Etsy shop or marketing - you FIRST need to to create your product and spend time "practicing." Chris Guillebeau is a writer, traveler, and entrepreneur. In 2013 he completed a 10-year quest to visit every country in the world before his 35th birthday. Every summer in Portland, Oregon he hosts the World Domination Summit, a gathering of creative, remarkable people. His new book, “Born for This,” will help you find the work you were meant to do. In this episode, Chris and Stacy discuss building a business that truly fits the life you want to lead and some of the options that you have. You don’t need your business to reflect anyone’s ideals but your own! Some highlights include: “I was 19, and I didn’t want to work for anyone else.” At minute 1:00, Chris talks about jumping into entrepreneurship because he wanted to work but didn’t want a boss. He also talks about how his career has evolved since that time. People have different learning styles. At minute 8:00, Chris talks about why a formal mentorship might not be the best strategy for every person starting a business. Have a healthy life and do work you love doing. At minute 10:00, Chris talks about why work-life balance is a great thing to strive for but might not exist in exactly the ways we think of because the term has been co-opted by corporations. “I don’t have any desire to have a lot of employees.” At minute 15:00, Chris talks about why he keeps his team small and how they are able to put on World Domination Summit by adding a team for that event only. Forge your own destiny. At minute 20:00, Chris talks about why he loves being an entrepreneur and the challenges that come along with it. Welcome to episode #315 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Julien Smith (co-author of Trust Agents with Chris Brogan and the author of The Flinch) was downright mad at me. We have lunch on a frequent basis and we're constantly slamming ideas and names at one another. It makes for a lively conversation. The other week, he was downright disgusted with me because I had never met Chris Guillebeau. Chris is the author of The Art Of Non-Conformity - Set Your Own Rules, Live The Life You Want And Change The World and the recently published, The $100 Startup - Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future, which became an instant bestseller. Along with that, he's the co-organizer of what is quickly becoming one of the "go to" events for those trying to create a remarkable life in a very conventional world called, World Domination Summit (which took place at the beginning of this month in Portland, Oregon). This idea of non-conformity and unconventionalism is a theme that binds Chris' life. He's about to turn 35 and complete his personal journey of visiting every country on earth (out of close to 200, he has a mere 8 to go). While he's never had a "day job," he seems to be doing just fine owning, operating and executing on many micro-businesses. He explains that his entrepreneurial history has ranged from importing coffee from Jamaica, search engine optimization in its early days, Google Adwords and Adsense arbitrage, to building a small publishing company while volunteering in Africa. He now writes and sells a product he calls, Unconventional Guides. Simply put, he's a fascinating individuals with many business lessons that we could all learn from. Enjoy the conversation...
