Today's episode begins with the story of my friend, Heather. Heather had never planned to go to grad school, but that all changed with a “tap.” This week I talk about the power of the "tap on the shoulder,” a nudge or a bit of encouragement, especially for women. This tap can encourage positive transformational moments like going back to school, pursuing a graduate degree, asking for a promotion, or running for political office. This is a brief, but impactful episode on our capacity to influence other's lives for good simply by recognizing other's strengths and encouraging them forward. Challenge: Think of five people (particularly women) you can give this “tap on the shoulder” to in the coming days and weeks. Remember, this is important for you and them! You've heard the "stat" before: men tend to apply for jobs when they meet only 60% of the qualifications and women only once they reach 100% of them. We're supposed to conclude that women simply need more confidence to stretch outside their comfort zone, right? Wrong. In today's episode, I'm diving into the details and breaking down why perpetuating this myth is so harmful. Welcome to our inaugural episode where we discuss the impact that COVID-19 is having on the lives of working women and what that means in a global and corporate sense. We touch upon 5 key ways in which governments and individual companies can overcome what is a potentially disastrous loss of women from the corporate space. - Base article material taken from the Wall Street Journal's September 2020 article entitled "Sheryl Sandberg: Companies and Women are at a Crossroads"- McKinsey Statistics taken from their July 2020 article entitled "Covid-19 and Gender Equality: Countering the Regressive Effects" - Shoosmiths statistics taken from their 2020 article entitled "Covid-19 and its Impact on Women at Work" - Harvard Business Review's article entitled "Why Women Don't Apply for Jobs Unless They're 100% Qualified" includes the statistic from a report by HP about men typically applying for jobs when they're only 60% qualified - Caroline Criado-Perez: Invisible Women (READ IT!!)- David Sedaris: Holidays on Ice (Also a must read though we cannot confirm if either sugar cookies or the word 'zeitgeist' still piss him off)
Tired of being told your career is stalling out because you need to lean in, raise your hand, change your personality and hire a career coach? Ever wondered where that thing about women only apply for jobs when they meet 100% of the qualification requirements whereas men will apply with just 60%? #075 — Transitioning Back to Work After a Career Break If you’ve taken a career break to raise children, reentering the workforce can be a challenge. Though motherhood is arguably the most difficult—and important—job on the planet, it isn’t a paid position. And the gap it leaves on your resume often seems to erase the experience you had before becoming a mom. How do you rebuild your confidence as a competent and capable career woman? And how do you prepare yourself emotionally for the transition back to work? Rita Kakati Shah is on a mission to support women in returning to the workforce through Uma, a startup that gives mothers the tools to rediscover themselves and find jobs that match their credentials—and their lifestyle commitments. Today, Rita joins me to explain how her own frustration around going back to work served as the inspiration for Uma. She shares Uma’s mission to empower women with the confidence and emotional readiness to reenter the workforce, offering advice around developing your swagger and scenario planning for childcare. Listen in for Rita’s insight on how entrepreneurship is just a different kind of motherhood and learn how society benefits when moms are supported in returning to the workforce! How can we improve diversity in design leadership? Access. Access to resources, education, other designers … access to the knowledge that design is even a career to pursue in the first place. We chat with Microsoft’s Product Design & Culture Lead Timothy Bardlavens about the lack diversity in the design industry and in leadership, in particular. We discuss the challenges of “diversity programs” that don’t actually deliver what people need, and how genuine leadership is needed for even grass-roots efforts to find success. He shares how basic access and radical transparency can be the start of change, but also reflects on the reality that change still seems to lie on the shoulders of the people who need it most. < Download MP3 > < Listen on ctrlclickcast.com > Show Notes: Dear AIGA, Goodbye.
