Consumption-Based AI Shifts MSP Role from Access to Governance and Cost Control

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2026 12:42

The episode highlights a structural shift from traditional software licensing towards consumption-based AI billing, transforming AI adoption into a source of direct financial exposure and accountability. This mechanism is illustrated by Microsoft's new administrative controls for Copilot in Windows 11 and platform-wide integration efforts from vendors such as Apple and Amazon. The primary concern is no longer simply enabling access to AI tools, but managing their consumption, controlling costs, and clarifying responsibility for both outputs and consequences. The most consequential development centers around rapidly escalating AI costs and the difficulty organizations face in quantifying usage. According to reporting from The Information, companies such as Uber exhausted their 2026 AI budgets within months, with some daily usage costs reaching approximately $1,000 per user. Simultaneously, The Register cites a survey indicating that a majority of U.S. employees are skeptical about their employers adopting Microsoft's AI bundles, and many believe alternative tools suffice. Additionally, Apple's acceptance of a $250 million settlement regarding misleading AI claims signifies a shift from reputational to monetary accountability. Supporting developments further expose operational and governance challenges. Microsoft's 2026 Work Trend Index, cited by CNET and GeekWire, identifies a disconnect between employee pressure to use AI and leadership's lack of defined, standardized practices. Apple's movement toward a third-party extensions model and Amazon's integration of managed agents into Bedrock are designed to address platform coherence, yet they introduce dynamic complexity in model choice and cost accountability. Gartner's projections of rising IT spend tied to data center investments further reinforce the infrastructure burden associated with widespread AI adoption. For MSPs and IT service providers, these developments underscore the risks of treating AI as a standard application rather than a managed operational layer. Legacy service agreements rarely specify how AI-driven costs, data exposure, or automation errors are governed. Providers now face new expectations to separate access and licensing from governance, usage auditing, and policy enforcement. Those who adapt by offering discrete AI management services—covering monitoring, cost controls, workflow approvals, and incident review—can align compensation with responsibility, while others risk absorbing escalating vendor complexity and unreimbursed accountability within flat-rate agreements. 00:00 AI Bill Due  03:31 Culture Blocks AI 05:49 AI Accountability Gap 09:16 Why Do We Care?  Supported by:  Moovila HaloPSA

The tough new realities for startups, Amazon's next big strategic bets, and Allbirds' crazy AI pivot

This week on the GeekWire Podcast, a week of Seattle-area startup news shows how the AI era is reshaping the regional tech scene. Q1 venture numbers reveal bigger checks going to fewer companies, with Seattle slipping behind the likes of Austin and Miami on deal volume. And yet the distributed nature of modern startups is complicating what it even means to be a regional tech hub. (Does a mailbox in Pioneer Square really count as a Seattle headquarters?) Founders and CEOs are navigating the shakeout in different ways. Those with enough cash in the bank are eyeing strategic acquisitions, including opportunities to absorb startups caught up in the AI shakeout. Meanwhile, many startup leaders are completely rethinking how they hire and expand. More than a third of the GeekWire 200, our ranking of the top Pacific Northwest startups, saw year-over-year employment declines, as agents boost individual productivity and start to reshape the workforce. Plus: Andy Jassy's shareholder letter signals Amazon is making bets again, in areas including chips and robotics. Driving home the point, the tech giant's ambitious Globalstar acquisition effectively means it's inheriting Apple's satellite roadmap. And of course we have to talk about Allbirds. The sustainable shoe brand, which once challenged Amazon over knock-off sneakers, pivoted to AI infrastructure and saw its stock soar. AI Deployment Exposes Workflow Gaps—MSPs Face Increased Liability and Coordination Demands

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2026 13:06

Automation and AI are shifting the pricing and accountability models for managed service providers, with risk increasingly centered on governance, workflow coherence, and outcome measurement rather than tool deployment. Evidence from studies like Fixify, reports from ChannelLive, and real-world cases such as the City of Seattle's pause on Microsoft Copilot rollout highlight that technology adoption is now gated less by access to solutions and more by readiness to govern, coordinate, and prove outcomes across fragmented processes. Automation exposes underlying coordination debt, moving the client focus from paying for labor time to demanding measurable outcomes and managed exceptions. Fixify's analysis of more than 50,000 support tickets from 30+ organizations showed tickets with at least 75% automation saw average resolution in 4.4 hours versus roughly three days for non-automated tickets. Data cited from OpenAI found that 93% of London SMBs use AI tools, but readiness and uptake are highly uneven within the UK. In Seattle, more than 450 labor hours per week were reported saved during the Copilot pilot, yet adoption was paused due to concerns over data governance and accountability for errors, not tool capability. According to coverage in GeekWire and IT Pro, these dynamics are shifting buyer expectations and vendor liabilities. Supporting developments include security concerns outlined by Kaseya's INKY report, which highlights the normalization of AI-generated phishing and changes in attack formats, forcing defenders to rethink detection and response. The operational surface of automation—where AI reshapes data, not just moves it—means standard controls and classic alerts are increasingly bypassed. Reports from Information Week and experts such as Dan Lorman emphasize that accountability for exceptions, shadow AI usage, and data exposure is shifting by default onto providers, whether or not contracts address these risks. These trends mean MSPs face direct operational and contract exposure: clients and auditors are demanding proof of how AI touches data, how exceptions are handled, and where logs and controls exist. Pricing based on seats or tickets is becoming harder to defend as automation compresses labor and raises expectations for accountability. Providers must reconsider SLAs, explicitly define automation boundaries, charge for governance activities, and move toward outcome-based pricing models if they want to avoid absorbing unpriced liability and operational complexity. 00:00 Automation Divide 04:27 Coordination Debt 06:01 Automation Liability 09:18 Why Do We Care?  Supported by:  JumpCloud HaloPSA

Today we have two guests from two different companies who have one shared conviction: AI works best when it amplifies people, not replaces them. Today we're joined by Rachana Rele, VP of Product Design for AI-native products at Adobe, and David Shim, co-founder and CEO of Read AI. Together, they're building very different products — but they share a vision of AI that removes the drudgery from creative work and makes room for the thinking that actually matters. In this conversation, we dig into some ideas that could genuinely change how you think about your work. David talks about this concept of “storage of intelligence” — the idea that your knowledge, your meeting history, your working style could all be captured and made available as a kind of digital twin that keeps working even when you're not in the room. And Rachana shares how Adobe is thinking about AI not as a one-shot creative output machine, but as a collaborative partner that helps teams break out of their own blind spots. We also push them on the harder questions — the job anxiety that's real right now in tech, the surveillance concerns that come with recording your work life, and where they each personally draw the line. Bios David Shim is Co-Founder and CEO of Read AI, an AI productivity platform focused on helping knowledge workers leverage the power of AI to improve how they collaborate, communicate, and get work done. The platform provides meeting insights, search, chat, and proactive recommendations for millions of professionals, integrating seamlessly with the tools teams already use. Read AI is pioneering the concept of the Digital Twin—AI that serves as a true extension of you, built on deep contextual understanding of how you work. Today, Read AI is trusted by teams at 90% of the Fortune 500 and in the past year, was recognized as a Top 10 AI Vendor for Enterprises by Brex, a Top 50 AI App by a16z and Mercury, and named one of Inc.'s Top 16 Companies to Watch Before founding Read AI, David served as CEO of Foursquare and previously founded Placed, which was acquired by Snap in 2017. In 2025, he was named CEO of the Year by Geekwire. Rachana Rele Rachana has spent 20+ years at the intersection of technology and human experience — figuring out not just what to build, but why it matters. At Adobe, she shapes the direction of new products, nurtures ideas from zero to something real, and helps early-stage businesses find their footing and grow. She's also a perpetual student — currently finishing an MBA at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, with an M.Eng. in HCI from Clemson and a B.E. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Mumbai.

Brice Budke (President) and Zeek Earl (Executive Creative Director) run two Seattle studios: Shep, a video agency that works with tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft, and Packrat, a creative studio that specializes in miniature worlds, handmade sets, and retro creative projects. You might know Packrat's work from the epic and widely watched 2025 Seahawks schedule release video, which won a Gold Clio. They also made Prospect, an indie sci-fi film that premiered at SXSW in 2018 with Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher. GeekWire met them last fall on the set of a stop-motion shoot for Kiro, an AI-powered agentic software development tool from Amazon Web Services. Check out the video they made from that shoot here. On this episode, Brice and Zeek discuss how AI is transforming their work — from photorealistic storyboarding to stop-motion animation filled in by AI-generated frames — and what still requires human creativity, taste, and intuition. Plus: the psychology of working with "infinite tools," why AI doesn't always save money, and the GeekWire Trivia Challenge. This week on Geekwire, we dig into some big movement in the hard rock and metal world as Skid Row teams up with Sweetwater for a worldwide search for a brand-new singer — and yes, anyone with the pipes can throw their hat in the ring. We also hit comments from Slash, who explains how the Guns N' Roses recording process has always worked as a democracy behind the scenes, plus tour news as W.A.S.P. announces the “1984 to Headless” North American run with special guests KK's Priest. We discuss a tough update from the metal world as Twisted Sister cancels all 2026 reunion shows due to Dee Snider's health challenges, and the reaction across the scene. Also in the mix: Manowar shares emotional words following news about Ross “The Boss,” Accept guitarist Philip Shouse unveils his debut EP, and Blaze Bayley explains why he's stepping away from meet-and-greets at future shows. We check out a funny story from Chris Jericho involving Ozzy Osbourne, along with new music news from Donnie Vie signing to Steven Van Zandt's label. KISS-related headlines dominate part of the show as Gene Simmons joins an all-star tribute to the Bon Scott era of AC/DC, the sons of Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons release the first Stanley Simmons video, and the classic “I Was Made For Lovin' You” video crosses the one-billion-view mark on YouTube. Plus: Brett Carlisle's run on American Idol, the bizarre Chattanooga KISS memorabilia theft story (by popular demand), and renewed discussion around the Kurt Cobain investigation as claims resurface while Seattle police stand by the original ruling.
