On today's episode, I talk to musicians Kathryn Calder and Mark Andrew Hamilton. Kathryn and Mark have been making music in different bands for years. Kathryn is a member of The New Pornographers, has released three albums under her own name and was in the indie pop group Immaculate Machine from 2003 to 2011. Similarly, Mark's primary band since the mid-aughts has been Woodpigeon, who have released over two dozen albums and EPs since their formation. After a chance meeting in the hallway of a recording studio, the two vowed to form a band together one day, and in the late 20-teens, they did just that! Their first self-titled album was released in 2018, and their latest Parade was just released last week on Oscar St. Records! Her solo work is a stirring blend of swirling indie rock and dreamy, sonorous pop that’s filled with wisdom, grace and resolve. Her voice is hypnotic and arresting and her textured arrangements are as ravishing as they are riveting. But woodpigeons make fantastic parents, and like all pigeons and doves produce a kind of 'milk' to feed their young. Quivver in fear as superficial characteristics are utilised to tar swathes of society with reductive, pernicious reputations, degrading their perceived humanity and associated rights. Cower in despair as they realise that selfishness and lies are utilised to maintain the comfort of an increasingly deluded and increasingly small number of people! Fuck me, sorry, I seem to have managed to not do one of these for about two months. That totally took me aback, I have to confess. Ah well, I suppose it was inevitable. Due to slightly ambitious scheduling we ended up with four or five releases all being live at the same time in the late Winter/early Spring period and I was kind of overwhelmed with all the work which needed doing for all of them I am afraid, which kind of accounts for how overwhelmed I ended up getting. It's been sunny and gorgeous here in Edinburgh, and we've been doing that classic thing you do in Northern cities, and sitting outside and drinking too much absolutely every available sunny second, and sometimes persisting way after it's become far too cold to reasonably sit outside. It's just such a joyous relief to feel the warmth and the sunshine, much of a Winter fetish as I do have. 01.
