On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of New Zealanders who've forged incredible careers in music and comedy and comedic music: Jemaine Clement and Ruban Nielson. I'm guessing Clement is best known to our listeners as half of Flight of the Conchords, his musical and acting duo with Bret McKenzie. They haven't put out a record or toured much in the last decade or so, but their albums and HBO series definitely endure with their subtle hilarity. Clement has of course been plenty busy post-Conchords as both an actor and director. His 2014 mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, co-directed with his old friend Taika Watiti, spun off into one of the funniest shows on TV, and you've also heard or seen him in everything from Despicable Me to the latest Avatar movie. In the awful event that you're not familiar with Flight of the Conchords, here's their David Bowie tribute, simply called “Bowie,” which is discussed a bit in this episode. Clement seemed excited—and well prepared!—to speak with Ruban Nielson, the singer-guitarist behind Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Though both of these guys are, as I said, from New Zealand and fans of each other's work, they had never met before. UMO, as Nielson's band is known for short, has been making a sort of uncategorizable music since 2010; they most often get pegged as psychedelic rock, which isn't wrong, but also doesn't tell the whole story. There are also elements of lo-fi indie rock, a bit of funk, and some garage rock. But the fact that it's tough to name is part of what makes UMO's music so appealing. Check out a little their song “The Garden,” which opens the latest UMO album, V. These guys have a fantastic conversation that spans everything from the history of New Zealand and their shared Maori heritage to an in-depth examination of the Jagstang, a guitar designed by Kurt Cobain and favored by Nielson. They talk about bombing on stage—and getting bombed before getting on stage—and they share stories about coming up in a shared place. Also, you'll hear the phrase “sad funky ghost,” perhaps for the first and last time in your life. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jemaine Clement and Ruban Nielson for chatting. “Gear is meant to be destroyed in the line of duty,” laughs Ruban Nielson. “I realize I prefer to see my equipment all dinged up rather than sitting perfect in my basement—that's a dorky thing to do.”That doesn't mean Nielson doesn't care about his sound. He noted in a 2015 interview with PG that he spends countless hours in his basement tinkering on breadboard circuits and swapping out components, trying to maximize a pedal for his needs. “I like the idea that instead of buying your sound, you're building your sound,” he said.Over the course of 14 years, five albums, and thousands of touring miles, Nielsen has been custom-fabricating his guitar voice. But as we all know, the quest is never-ending, like trying to catch the horizon. After all, isn't it the journey, not the destination, that matters?“I used to be too much of a savage to care about a clean boost or headroom,” says Nielson. “‘Just give me a distortion pedal already!' But now I'm exploring the intricacies, subtleties, and nuances of guitar.”Ahead of Unknown Mortal Orchestra's headlining performance at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl, Ruban Nielson welcomed PG's Chris Kies onstage to explore his current sonic lab. Nielson covers his two space-age guitars (and what inspired them), explains how he convinced Benson to put a Monarch inside a vintage solid-state Yamaha, and details the pedals—including a few of his own designs—that extract a kaleidoscope of moods.Brought to you by D'Addario.

She sings of her catharsis and the pain she encountered along the way. She takes time to admire the beauty of her surroundings. ”The new album is the counterpoint to her previous project, Walking Away From The Dream. Both were produced by Riley Geare, a drummer known for his contributions to the music of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Caroline Rose. While she contemplated letting go on Walking Away From The Dream, the new albumbrings forth a bright return, acknowledging the power and weight of music in her life. The writing and development of Waking Up To Tomorrow, along with her recent return toLos Angeles, has manifested a creative reawakening for Hannah whose expression fillsthis album. The album is about hope, she said, about “realizing that old dreams that you thoughtwere dead and gone actually have a chance to be revived.
Fresh off a tour opening for Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Dion shares his takes on musical exploration, genre development, and collaboration. Dion Kerr is a forward-thinking, multi-dimensional artist (multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, songwriter, photographer, and videographer) born and raised in South Florida. Kerr's work reflects a broad range of influences and mediums. He has toured and recorded worldwide as a leader and a sideman to various groups spanning multiple genres. Dion Kerr displays his unwavering talent as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and conceptual artist. Utilizing acoustic and electric elements, he blends a wide range of influences and styles into a cohesive sound that expands the limitations of genre-bound music. There are hints of Dion's eclectic taste in his records' melodic groove-based instrumentals. Experimentation is essential in Dion's process and is always represented in vivid fluidity. Dion can be seen at some of the most renowned festivals, venues, studios, and galleries with many great young and upcoming artists of all art forms. Kerr has shared the stage with Ignacio Berroa, Nicholas Payton, Lillias White, Godwin Louis, Jean Caze, Emmet Cohen, Immanuel Wilkins, Justin Brown, Tivon Pennicott, and most recently Marcus Strickland coming off of their European tour of festivals and venues such as Ronnies Scott's in London. Dion co-founded the band The Smoogies, who released their debut album Planet Smoogies with trumpeter Nicholas Payton and People Music; they are set to release their next record, a live album, in 2024. Dion was the lead engineer and co-producer of Seafoam Walls record XVI; he also played guitar (formerly bass) in the live incarnation, released on Thurston Moore and Eva Printz's label Ecstatic Peace Library, which was recorded and produced in his home studio. They recently got off tour, opening up for Unknown Mortal Orchestra for their US tour dates, and have secured a sponsorship with Fender. He is also a key member in many other highly sought-after bands in South Florida and New York art scenes. His musical career began early on by being billed with the Dave Leibman quartet while he was still in High School, leading them to reconnect at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in NY, where he attended school on scholarship. He has been seen at venues and festivals such as The Blue Note, Sevilla Jazz Festival, Martinique Jazz Festival, Ground Up Festival, Guatemala Jazz Festival, Quebec City Jazz Festival, Young Jazz Festival, Casa Del Jazz, and Adrienne Arsht Center. He has toured North America and Europe extensively with different bands. Dion has scored music for films featured at SXSW, New Orleans Film, and Miami Film Festivals. Dion Kerr's new solo record, set to be released in 2023, follows up his latest releases, Ivy, which also features Jeff Parker, Bubby Lewis, Adam O'Farrill, Reptile Ground, Echoes of Lost Time, and Ruby. His new record showcases his expansive musical knowledge and arranging abilities, featuring himself on bass, vocals, recording, production, and mixing. His YouTube series Dialogues has been his most recent outlet, which features a wide variety of musical artists that he performs together in an intimate duo setting, which showcases the individuality of each featured artist and how a musical conversation can take place in hopes of bringing people more together. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got the frontman for a band that recently made a welcome return after a long absence, and the producer who helped him find the sounds and songs to do it: John Gourley and Jeff Bhasker. Gourley is the singer for Portugal. The Man, which started making music in their home state of Alaska back in the early 2000s before finding success and relocating to Portland, Oregon. The band has an impressive catalog that runs the pop gamut, and weirdly they hit it huge pretty deep into their career, with the 2017 song “Feel It Still,” which is still on pop radio six years later. Just this year, PTM finally released a new album, called Chris Black Changed My Life, which both mourns and celebrates the band's close friend, for whom it's also named. The album was also partly inspired by the daughter of Gourley and his bandmate Zoe Manville; Frances Gourley has a rare genetic disorder that's touched on in this chat. But the album and Gourley's story is by no means grim: He's all about celebrating life, as you'll hear on this track, “Summer of Luv,” which features some assistance from another recent Talkhouse guest, Unknown Mortal Orchestra. You'll also hear the fingerprints of producer Jeff Bhasker on that track. Bhasker is best known for co-writing and co-producing smash hits like Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Mark Ronson's “Uptown Funk.” He's one of several names that Portugal. The Man brought in to help realize Chris Black Changed My Life. The two talk about how that process worked, and in particular how Gourley is—unlike some songwriters—always happy to have more creative voices in the room. They also chat about which of them is a better singer, about playing at the Hollywood Bowl, about Gourley's life-changing jaw injury, and about Gourley's daughter Frances and the challenges they face. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to John Gourley and Jeff Bhasker for chatting. Unknown Mortal Orchestra are one of my favourite bands. Ever since when I first heard Ffunny Friends, I was hooked. And also intrigued… their music is often a beautiful mystery, layered with hidden meanings and textures you unpick with every listen. I remember listening to Multi-Love, then reading about the poly relationship that had inspired it, and the songs just cracked open. It's a bit the same with their latest record. Cos while “V” sounds like a sprawling, nostalgic, and at times laidback album the story of it's making is much denser. Through a pandemic, lockdowns, burnout, and family illness, Ruban Nielson found his way back home. In more ways than one. And in asking him to Take 5 with the songs that shaped this new record, he helped us unpick his stories once more. From gorgeous Hawaiian slack-key guitar to Christopher Cross hits, this is a heartfelt insight into a songwriter's heart. Kalama's Quartet - ‘Iniki Mālie Bruddah Waltah - Hawaiian Lands George Helm - Waikiki Christopher Cross - Ride Like the Wind Toto - Georgy Porgy

As broadcast March 21, 2023 with lots of regret. Tonight we mark 20 years since the US invaded Iraq in what was dubbed "Operation Iraqi Freedom." Obviously, it wasn't that, it was just another dumb war. Moving onto the present, we had a lot of new tunes to get through today, with new albums out from Yves Tumor and Unknown Mortal Orchestra along with a slew of other new singles and announcements from the likes of Tash Sultana, Bedroom, and Phoenix. Part 3 we got into the big pop stuff just out but then finished with the main event and our Fresh K Cuts Korean indie dossier, with a new album out from SE SO NEON's Hwang So-yoon, and tunes from Korean expat artists hanbee and Peach Luffe to check out as well.Tracklist (st:rt)Part 1 (00:00)War – Slippin' Into DarknessPhoenix feat Clairo – After MidnightSalt Cathedral – Strong EmotionsLeith Ross – GutsYves Tumor – ParodyUnknown Mortal Orchestra – Meshuggah Part 2 (32:09)Gretel Hanlyn – Easy PeelerFeist – Borrow TroubleJohn Mark Nelson feat James McAllister & CARM – Do It AgainBedroom – Better FriendsTash Sultana – James DeanSpanish Harlem Orchestra – Escucha El RitmoSpanish Harlem Orchestra – La BandaPart 3 (59:41)Lana Del Rey – The GrantsMelanie Martinez – DEATHTaylor Swift – All Of The Girls You Loved BeforeHozier – Eat Your YoungSabrina Carpenter – FeatherNijah feat Childish Gambino & KIRBY – StickyManuel Turizo – Triste Part 4 (89:44)hanbee – number ownChamsom – Cue SignPeach Luffe – Notice Me109 – First LoveSuitz feat Kim Yu-jin – 우리 올해가 지나기 전에So!Yoon! feat RM – Smoke SpriteSo!Yoon! – OUT (to be continued :)

In April, Chaz Bear dropped the seventh studio album from his constantly evolving project Toro y Moi titled Mahal. One of his jammier records, Mahal veers heavily towards psych-funk and features a hefty list of contributors including Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Ruban Neilson, Neon Indian's Alan Palomo, visual artist and musician Sofie Royer, and jazz duo the Mattson 2. Our Song of the Day is the breezy track and early single “The Loop.” Led by a funky bassline and a meandering guitar, the song slowly ambles while Bear mellowly muses on the trappings of modern life in the digital age where it's imperative to stay up to date. “East Coast friends fill me in, I know you get the early scoop,” Bear croons. “Online trends that border cringe start to feel overused." The video for the song follows Bear and his friends over the course of a pretty incredible day in San Francisco where the squad skateboards, rolls through the streets in go-carts and jeepneys, and has one heck of a meal at FOB Kitchen in Oakland. Watch the video below and catch Toro y Moi on Saturday, July 23rd at Capitol Hill Block Party. Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Toro y Moi sits down for a chat with Kyle Meredith about Mahal, an album that touches on his Filipino heritage while also commenting on the world at large. The artist also known as Chaz Bundick talks about the repurposed WWII-era Jeep that he bought and how it ties into the record, landing on a '70s psychedelic soul and funk sound for the LP, and how he sees this as a sister album to 2015's What For?. He also tells us why he wrote a thank you to the postal service, comments on the digital era and how we consume content, having Ruban Nielson from Unknown Mortal Orchestra back as a guest, and his plans to release instrumental versions of all of his albums on their 10th anniversaries. Listen to Toro y Moi's interview about Mahal, his psychedelic influences, and more above, or watch the conversation via Consequence.
