Inflation doesn't always show up loudly, and for many federal employees and retirees, the biggest danger is assuming COLA will protect their retirement income. In this episode of the Plan Your Federal Retirement podcast, Micah Shilanski, Managing Partner, Wealth Advisor, and Luke Eberly, Wealth Advisor, break down the "COLA mirage": why cost-of-living adjustments often fail to keep pace with real inflation, rising FEHB premiums, and increasing expenses. They explain how COLA works differently for federal employees, FERS retirees, Social Security, and special provision employees, and why many retirees see their buying power shrink year after year, even after an increase. Listen in to find out what practical steps you can take before and during retirement to guard against inflation, help protect your cash flow, and avoid spending down your retirement savings too quickly. https://zurl.co/RFWJd

In this episode of The Winston Marshall Show, I sit down with Israeli journalist and geopolitical analyst Haviv Rettig Gur to unpack the deeper forces behind the Iran war, the growing confrontation between the United States and China, and the shifting alliances across the Middle East.We begin by addressing a claim circulating in American politics: that Israel “dragged” the United States into the conflict with Iran. Haviv explains why that narrative misunderstands the strategic reality, arguing that Iran had become a key component of China's long-term geopolitical strategy against American power. Our conversation explores how Iranian negotiations over its nuclear programme may have been used to buy time while missile capabilities and military infrastructure were expanded underground with Chinese assistance. We examine the intelligence operation that allegedly led to the attempted strike on Ali Khamenei, the strategic timing of American forces entering the region, and why the conflict escalated when it did. From there, we widen the lens to the global chessboard: China's dependence on Middle Eastern oil, the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, and how Iran's partnership with Beijing may have given China leverage over global energy routes in the event of a confrontation over Taiwan. We also examine the unexpected alignment emerging across the Arab world, where several Gulf states increasingly view Iran as a destabilising revolutionary power rather than a partner against Israel. The discussion turns to what the Middle East might look like if the Iranian regime weakens or collapses, and whether regional power could shift toward countries like Turkey or Saudi Arabia. Finally, we discuss the role of international law, the limits of global institutions, and whether the world is entering a new era of great-power politics defined less by legal frameworks and more by raw strategic power.A wide-ranging conversation about war, geopolitics, and the emerging global order.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------WATCH THE EXTENDED CONVERSATION HERE: https://open.substack.com/pub/winstonmarshall/p/the-secret-plan-behind-trumps-iran?r=18lfab&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapters00:00 Introduction01:51 The “America First” Conservative Split on Israel05:00 Why This War Is Bigger Than Israel06:25 Iran as a Strategic Asset for China07:32 How the War Actually Began09:18 The Strike on Khamenei and the Start of the War11:10 Why Iran Was Never Negotiating in Good Faith13:09 Iran's Nuclear Program: Weapons, Not Energy15:00 How Obama's Deal Changed Iran's Calculus18:16 The Lessons of the 12-Day War20:08 Why This Is America's War Too23:18 The China–Iran Strategic Alliance25:39 Oil, Sea Lanes and Global Power27:30 Why Iran Became a Target in America's China Strategy34:15 China, Trade Routes and Global Hegemony37:11 The Arab World's Quiet Alignment Against Iran43:09 Who Fills the Power Vacuum if Iran Falls?48:57 The West, China and the Future Global Order54:12 Is International Law a Mirage? When in Las Vegas, most magicians plan to see shows by other magicians like Mike Hammer, Mac King, David Copperfield, and others. But there are other attractions not to be missed whilst visiting Sin City. One major attraction (in terms of both scope and physical size) is the Neon Museum. Just a few blocks from the downtown Fremont Street Experience lies one of the best kept secrets of the city. As casinos, hotels, motels, coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants turn out their lights for their last time, the glitz lives on at this outdoor museum. It is a feast for the eyes whether you go during the day or night. Both deliver extraordinary visual awe as you view the past to see some of these iconic signs that don't just live in history but now reside in their own “boneyard.” This week, Johann Rucker, one of the museum's curators tells us about the history of the museum and, perhaps why it is of historical importance to magicians. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize Among the many signs and lights in the museum lies the statue of Siegfried and Roy. When the Mirage was torn down along with the Secret Garden, that left the statue of the legendary duo standing alone on the Strip. To preserve it from seeing the wrecking ball or local dump (or going in someone's private museum), the Neon Museum decided to preserve and display it in their outdoor exhibit. Though it has no neon lights adorning or shining on it, it stands now preserved among the rest of the historical landmarks as Siegfried and Roy take their spot in history for the world to see and remember how they changed the face of Las Vegas forever. The official unveiling of the statue is expected to take place on April 25, 2026. Download this podcast in an MP3 file by Clicking Here and then right click to save the file. This month, We kick off the next chapter of our Mirage-era journey as we begin Volume 4 of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, covering the first four issues in our ongoing monthly deep dive. Written and illustrated by Peter Laird with finishes by Jim Lawson (and additional work by Eric Talbot later in the arc), this era marks a return to Mirage continuity following the Volume 2 fork in the road — and right from the opening cover by Michael Dooney, the Turtles feel grounded, compact, and classic again. We also set the stage in the early 2000s, when these issues first appeared between September 2001 and mid-2002. Pop culture was stacked: films like Spider-Man, Star Wars: Episode II, Blade II, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding filled theaters, Nickelback and Ashanti ruled the charts, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City dominated gaming, and Family Guy was canceled (for now). Against that backdrop, Volume 4 begins a slower-burn, sci-fi-tinged saga that blends grounded family moments with looming cosmic stakes.Issue #1 mirrors the Turtles' very first alley fight as they clash with the Madhattan Maulitia, while revealing a major shift: the brothers are now in their 30s, feeling every mile of the fight. A rooftop snowmobile chase leaves Michelangelo critically injured and discovered by the imposing alien warrior Magnrok, while Donatello uncovers an abandoned armored truck that feels destined to matter later. Meanwhile, April and Casey attend a fertility appointment, Shadow senses something world-changing on the horizon, and the Fugitoid and Utroms quietly prepare a massive interstellar operation.Issue #2 finds Michelangelo surviving an airborne ambulance mishap and waking inside Kurtzburg Memorial Hospital — a facility that treats superheroes, aliens, and the otherwise unusual. Back in the lair, Donatello and Casey investigate the mysterious armored truck while Raphael contemplates being left alone with skeletonized robbers and his life choices. Shadow navigates teenage secrecy, and the Utrom plan continues to unfold beyond Earth.Issue #3 expands the scope dramatically: a research expedition in Venezuela encounters a wooden, weaponized creature, U.S. Air Defense scrambles as an Utrom craft departs the moon, and Michelangelo receives a scenic flight home courtesy of his rescuer Raptarr. As aliens descend toward New York Harbor, panic spreads, missiles fail spectacularly, and humanity greets first contact with static, confusion, and ineffective gunfire.Issue #4 delivers the payoff: the alien craft peacefully returns the long-lost spacecraft Defiant to Earth and introduces the Utroms to the world — with one clumsy stumble instantly easing global tension. Karai observes events from the shadows, revealing Foot Clan interest in the alien arrival, while a quiet rooftop moment gives way to yet another escalation: a giant robot rising from the sewers.Volume 4 opens with introspection, humor, and domestic calm colliding with cosmic inevitability. The Turtles are older, the world is bigger, and something enormous is clearly on its way.

In an age of growing wealth disparities, politicians on both sides of the aisle are sounding the alarm about the fading American Dream. Yet despite all evidence to the contrary, many still view the United States as the land of opportunity. The American Mirage addresses this puzzle by exposing the stark reality of today's media landscape, revealing how popular entertainment media shapes politics and public opinion in an increasingly news-avoiding nation. Drawing on an eclectic array of original data, Dr. Eunji Kim demonstrates how, amid a dazzling array of media choices, many Americans simply are not consuming the news. Instead, millions flock to entertainment programs that showcase real-life success stories, such as American Idol, Shark Tank, and MasterChef. Dr. Kim examines how shows like these leave viewers confoundingly optimistic about the prospects of upward mobility, promoting a false narrative of rugged individualism and meritocracy that contradicts what is being reported in the news. By taking seriously what people casually watch every day, The American Mirage shows how rags-to-riches programs perpetuate the myth of the American Dream, glorifying the economic winners, fostering tolerance for income inequality, and dampening support for redistributive policies that could improve people's lives. Our guest is: Dr. Eunji Kim, who is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Columbia University. As a political communication scholar, she primarily studies the impact of media content on mass attitudes and political behavior. She is the author of The American Mirage: How Reality TV Upholds the Myth of Meritocracy. The Derek Carr rumor cycle takes a hard turn as new comments force Evan to rethink everything he thought he heard in December. Is Carr actually open to coming back, or is he quietly ruling the Jets out unless they magically become contenders overnight? The guys break down what Carr really means by “the perfect situation,” which teams actually fit that description, and why the Jets may already be on the outside looking in. The quarterback discussion spirals into full Jets chaos, from Malik Willis to Kyler Murray, Tua, Cousins, Rodgers rumors, draft options, and the reality that there is no clean answer. Evan announces an upcoming Jets QB Big Board, callers argue over upside vs. desperation, and the debate over winning now versus setting up 2027 heats up. Plus, Tom Brady somehow narrates a 49ers documentary and still finds a way to take a cheap shot at Jets fans, sparking a classic Evan rant. The hour also introduces the idea of a weekly “worst take of the week” segment, with more than a few WFAN personalities already lobbying their case.

In this episode, we listen to a pointed question put to another, as portrayed in Sangam Literary work, Aganaanooru 179, penned by Koadimangalathu Vaathuli Narchenthanaar, Set in the ‘Paalai’ or ‘Drylands landscape’, the verse etches the dreariness of this domain. In this trip to the drylands, we get to hear the confidante say these words to the man, when he conveys his intention to part away from the lady and go in search of wealth: “Adjoining those majestic mountains with sky-soaring peaks, in the scorched, stony spaces, filled with mirages, running away from the wide and formidable scrub jungle, where fire spreads rapidly, a small-eyed elephant extends its long arm and opens its wide mouth. Without receiving the satisfying gush of water, it leaves with dejection from there. In those wide spreading spaces, glory of men with curving bows and red-tipped, speeding arrows is etched on hero stones. If you wish to traverse such paths, where there is no one to end the uproarious deeds of the wicked, do you think you are capable of departing from this place and living apart, leaving the lady with a sweet smile, sharp teeth, akin to the eye of a peacock's feather, red mouth, kohl-streaked eyes, akin to freshly blossomed flowers of the blue-lily, and moon-like, shining forehead, to lament?” Time to experience the familiar heat of this land! The confidante starts with a vivid description of the place, talking first about the adjoining ranges, telling us this drylands region could be the transformation of a ‘Kurinji’ domain in the heat of summer. Here, she talks about how the heat paints mirages on the land, and fooled, an elephant comes rushing to quench its thirst and leaves in much disappointment, even as wild fires streak around. She points to the many hero stones that echo the glory and death of great warriors, detailing how these are abandoned spaces, away from the protecting hand of law, and there’s no one to quell the mischief of the wicked. After that long description, the confidante talks about the beauty of the lady, her smile, perfect teeth, red mouth, dark eyes, shining forehead, and ends by asking the man how he could even think of staying away from the lady, leaving her in suffering! To put it in a nutshell, the confidante tells the man, ‘The wealth you are searching for, is nothing but a mirage. What is real is the beauty of the lady, right next to you, and that’s all the wealth you need!’. Whether the man accepts her perspective or not, it sure echoes a timeless philosophical debate about the nature of wealth and its conflict with love!

In this episode, we explore the strange signals people use to interpret global events, from Pentagon pizza orders and satellite data to the Big Mac Index and other unconventional measures of economic reality. We examine the decline of Google search, the rise of AI-powered alternatives, and why new tools are changing how people actually find information. For the “foolishness of the week”, we detail an unfortunate incident involving a piece of World War I artillery, before turning to a broader cultural debate about nostalgia for the 1950s. With guest Andrew Heaton, we unpack myths about work, gender roles, housing, healthcare, and prosperity, comparing mid-century life to modern standards of living. Along the way, we discuss food abundance, technological progress, wage compensation, inequality, and whether people genuinely want to return to the past or simply romanticize it from a distance. 00:00 Introduction and Overview 00:28 Pentagon Pizza Orders and “Pizza Intelligence” 02:51 Proxy Signals, Satellite Data, and the Waffle House Index 04:25 The Big Mac Index and Measuring Cost of Living 05:00 The Decline of Google Search and Sponsored Results 07:19 Switching Search Engines and the Myth of Google Monopoly 09:54 AI Search Tools and Why They Actually Work 11:28 Foolishness of the Week: World War I Artillery Incident 13:43 How Bad Ideas Escalate at Parties 15:51 Introducing Andrew Heaton 16:39 Was the 1950s a Time or a Place? 18:43 Economic Reality vs 1950s Nostalgia 20:58 Women's Work, Household Labor, and Misleading Myths 23:56 Food Costs, Eating Out, and Modern Abundance 25:46 Medicine, Lifespan, and Why 50s Healthcare Was Worse 27:57 Housing Size, Zoning, and the Cost of Homes 30:01 Cars, Air Conditioning, and Quality of Life Improvements 31:17 Mortgage Rates and Why Housing Feels Unaffordable Now 34:02 Manufacturing, Exports, and the “We Don't Make Anything” Myth 35:35 Agricultural Productivity and Modern Farming 37:19 Food Waste as a Measure of Prosperity 37:42 Great Depression Scarcity and Generational Habits 39:59 Transportation Costs and Higher Quality Modern Vehicles 42:50 Car Safety, Seatbelts, and Survival Rates 43:42 Wages, Benefits, and What “Compensation” Really Means 45:29 What the 1950s Actually Did Better 47:52 Inequality, Community, and Social Capital in the 50s 49:44 Technology, Isolation, and Choosing Modern Life 52:05 Longing for Silence from Technology 53:18 The Mythology of Happy Days Learn more about your ad choices. As dust settles after the deadly protests in Iran, the Anchormen debate Iranian political analyst Ali Alizadeh.  He argues sanctions crippled Iran's economy, which fueled unrest. Over 3,000 people were killed… yet the sanctions remain.  So what happens next? Do Iranians really want American intervention? Will the U.S. engage in yet another failed Middle East regime change war? Can the uprising be Iran's Tiananmen Square moment? Or is real change in Iran just a desert mirage?
