Jeremy Zakis, Part Two: Zakis reports on springtime in New South Wales, beginning with magpie breeding and swooping season—the start of nesting and defensive "dive-bombing" behavior, contrasted with the birds' remarkable memory and facial recognition that allow them to remember friendly locals. He notes the arrival of docile currawongs peacefully sharing garden space and pet biscuits with local magpies and dogs. The conversation turns to protecting ecosystems amid housing demands: addressing Australia's housing shortage by re-zoning and building dense apartment blocks in existing suburbs rather than clearing native bushlands and koala habitats. Finally, Zakis examines the Ashescricket re-evaluation—how England's tactical victory over Pakistan under new captain Joe Root signals a return to conservative cricket, forcing Australia to rethink its youthful Ashes strategy. Stephen Moss, author of Ten Birds That Changed the World, Part One: Moss discusses how birds shaped human history, starting with the Wild Turkey, which nearly became America's national bird and was essential to pilgrim survival. The naming of the Turkey stems from 16th-century confusion regarding Turkish merchants and African Guinea Fowl. Moss contrasts the Turkey with the Bald Eagle, a symbol of predatory power adopted from Roman traditions and later by Napoleon and the Nazis. The segment explores the Pigeon, the "great communicator" crucial for military messaging during D-Day and World War I, including the heroic pigeon Cher Ami. A significant portion debunks the myth of Darwin's Finches, noting that Charles Darwin initially misidentified them and failed to label their specific islands. The discussion touches on the intelligence and convergent evolution of Australian species like the Magpie and Willie Wagtail. Finally, the Dodo is introduced as the "icon of extinction." This flightless bird's demise on Mauritius, caused by human-introduced predators like monkeys and rats, forced humanity to confront the reality that species could vanish forever. Moss notes that while the Dodo is gone, its story inspired modern conservation efforts to save birds like the Pink Pigeon and Mauritius Kestrel. (1)

Christopher Cantwell joins Jace during San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to discuss an ambitious slate of upcoming work spanning Gotham City, the Green Lantern universe and the final frontier. Cantwell begins by discussing his role on the second season of Lanterns. A longtime Green Lantern reader who previously wrote Hal Jordan in Challengers of the Unknown, Cantwell describes the project as the television assignment he would have selected for himself and praises the distinctive approach established by the first season. The conversation then turns to Cantwell's two-issue Gotham Central story within the Bad Seeds event. Gotham's police department has been compromised under Commissioner Vandal Savage, leaving Jim Gordon, Espinosa and a small collection of honest officers attempting to solve a murder while carrying out orders issued by the city's corrupt leadership. That storyline establishes the foundation for Gangs of Gotham. Anarky is placed in Gotham's East End and ordered to unify its gangs before the district is bulldozed. Although he continues to consider himself an opponent of corrupt institutions, the promise of influence forces him to confront whether he still believes his own revolutionary rhetoric or has become another person willing to compromise everything for power. Stephanie Brown is simultaneously operating undercover inside the Street Demons biker gang. She has risen to become the gang's second-in-command, but Batman is the only member of the Bat-family who knows where she is. Cantwell describes a Steph who remains highly capable but is becoming increasingly isolated and resentful as her messages to Bruce go unanswered. Cantwell also explains how the series incorporates established characters including Jim Gordon, Arnold Flass, Harvey Bullock, Holly Robinson, Magpie and the Ten-Eyed Man while creating an entire ecosystem of gangs built around food, fuel, shelter, information and protection. Instead of treating the East End as interchangeable scenery, the series examines how abandoned institutions and limited resources force communities to develop their own hierarchies and systems of survival. The discussion concludes with Cantwell's upcoming Star Trek series, which examines exploration, colonization and the psychological pressure created when a crew enters genuinely uncharted territory. A slow, lyrical audio meditation that follows a magpie as it gathers small glints of light and leads the listener through vivid sensory images. The episode uses rich, intimate details—the taste of petrol-light, the sound of water in a well, the weight of a hidden coin—to guide you into a brief, grounding moment of stillness and reflection. It ends by inviting you to hold the feeling for a second longer and then open your eyes, returning from the quiet web of imagination.

The Origins Awards are an annual award that recognizes excellence in the tabletop gaming industry, including board games, card games, miniatures and roleplaying games. First presented in 1975 at the inaugural Origins Game Fair in Baltimore, the awards are currently managed by the Game Manufacturers Association or GAMA.The winner of the Roleplaying Game of the Year is the Land of Eem Deluxe Box Set by Exalted Funeral. Notably, Land of Eem is a rules-light TTRPG created by authors Ben Costa and James Parks (and based on their Rickety Stitch and the Gelatinous Goo graphic novels). It's described as a lighthearted blend of Lord of the Rings and The Muppets, with a dash of Adventure Time thrown in for good measure. The Winner of the Roleplaying Supplement of the Year is Call of Cthulhu: The Sutra of Pale Leaves – Twin Suns Rising from Chaosium. The Sutra of Pale Leaves – Twin Suns Rising is a campaign supplement for the Call of Cthulhu RPG, set in 1980s Japan. It reimagines the iconic King in Yellow mythos by having a lost, ancient scroll resurface with ties to a sinister entity. The book features three interconnected scenarios and, in addition to featuring many of the familiar Lovecraftian tropes, also explores the unique cultural and historical setting (which is a radical departure from the traditional 1920s setting of New England). But before we dive into the winners and the long list of nominees, Dr. Christina attended Origins this year. Yellow-billed Magpies are clever, colorful birds — and they're only found in central California. Their hefty bodies are boldly patterned in black, white, and iridescent blue. Like their crow and jay cousins, these corvids are adventurous eaters that often forage on the ground in noisy groups. In California's oak-dominated woods and grasslands, you'll find them feasting on acorns, insects, grains, and anything else they can get their beaks on. Sadly, Yellow-billed Magpie populations have declined drastically in recent years. Now it's up to us to step up and protect the remaining woodlands and savannas they need to thrive. Talk the Talk - a podcast about linguistics, the science of language.
Australian magpies are even cleverer birds than we thought. New research from Dr Stephanie Mason shows that they do two language-like things we used to think only humans could do: learn their calls socially, and combine their calls in a way that looks a lot like syntax. So are we calling this language? If so, how are the linguists taking it? Stephanie joins us to talk about magpies, media, and the territoriality of linguists. RAVENS BEFRIEND DALLAS AND DISPLACE THE COCKATOOS Colleague Jeremy Zakis. Zakis updates the backyard wildlife saga, noting the arrival of intelligent Ravens that have befriended his dog, Dallas. Unlike the aggressive Cockatoos that damaged a neighbor's roof, the Ravens displayed strategic dominance by organizedly displacing the Cockatoos from a pine tree. Zakis describes the Ravens' "surgical" approach, using vocal harassment and gradual escalation rather than brute force to claim the territory. He observes that while the Cockatoos still lurk, the Ravens have established control. Additionally, he counts at least five Magpie families in the area, with several actively visiting his property to interact with Dallas.
3/8. Darwin's Finches: The Evolution Myth and the Speed of Adaptation — Steven Moss — Moss corrects widespread misconceptions regarding Darwin's Finches, noting that Charles Darwin collected the specimens but failed to properly label their specific island origins, and subsequently employed pigeons rather than finches to explain evolutionary mechanisms. Moss discusses researchers Peter and Rosemary Grant, who demonstrated that evolutionary adaptation can occur with extraordinary rapidity, occurring within single El Niño weather events. Moss explores Australian birds, including the Magpie, as examples of misnamed convergent evolution. Moss emphasizes that all bird species, including the frequently underestimated pigeon, possess sophisticated cognitive and intelligence capabilities. 1862
Wildlife Intelligence: Magpie Alliances and Cockatoo Defense — Jeremy Zakis — Zakis discussed his dog Dallas, who has become a skilled magpie whisperer, having cultivated alliances with five distinct magpie families throughout the neighborhood. Dallas demonstrates affection and respect toward the birds through deliberate head-bowing behavior, effectively communicating non-threatening intent. Dallas also actively protects the property from destructive Australiancockatoos seeking food and nesting sites. As summer approaches, other wildlife including kangaroos and wombats are increasingly emerging from natural habitat areas into residential neighborhoods.
Tragic Magpie Attack Blinds Girl; Massive Eastern Brown Snake Invades Home. Jeremy Zakis reports that a massive five-foot-long great eastern brown snake was found rearing up outside a woman's bathroom in Veil View, Queensland, necessitating a snake catcher. This highly venomous species requires prompt antivenom administration within the "golden hour." Separately, a 12-year-old girl in Australind, Western Australia, was tragically attacked by an aggressive magpie, which targeted her eye, causing severe damage and potential sight loss. Dallas the Dog Fosters Trust with Magpie Family, Enhancing Their Intelligence. Jeremy Zakis chronicles how Dallas the dog has adopted a magpie family, leading to a comfortable second generation residing nearby. Dallas's kind, placid demeanor fosters trust, allowing the smart magpies to grow up around him and even play with his toys. A study suggests these positive social interactions enhance magpie intelligence, while vandal cockatoos continue stripping local trees. Guest: Jeremy Zakis.
