Be Snakes 2. Be Dove 3. Be Sheep. Please join us in Pastor Bill's challenge to read through the entire sermon, Matthew 5-7, at least once per week. In Matthew 10, Jesus sends his disciples "as sheep among wolves" and tells them to be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” But what does this actually mean?Being "wise as serpents" means:✓ Having "street smarts" and understanding how the world really works✓ Recognizing the cruelty and dangers of a broken world✓ Knowing when to speak up and when to remain silent✓ Being prepared for persecution when you stand for your faithBut Jesus balances this with "innocent as doves," which means:☑️ Maintaining your integrity even in difficult situations☑️ Acting with kindness, gentleness, and vulnerability☑️ Remembering your identity in Christ first and foremost☑️ Not becoming the very thing you're fighting againstThis isn't permission to lie or manipulate others "for a good cause." Instead, it's wisdom to navigate a fallen world while holding onto who you truly are in Christ. In practice, this might mean:→ Speaking truth with kindness rather than harshness→ Waiting for the right moment to address difficult situations→ Putting the best construction on others' words and actions (8th Commandment)→ Being self-aware of both your surroundings and your own sinful tendenciesRemember: The world can be harsh and unfair, but you don't have to play by its rules. In Christ, we have the wisdom to see clearly and the grace to remain gentle in a world that often rewards neither.Your baptismal identity is stronger than the world's games of power, money, and status. You're forgiven. You're in Christ. You have the truth.Contributor Matt Richard is Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minot, ND.Contributor Rev. In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar chats with Saint Leonard—the visionary artist formerly known as Kieran Leonard—about the extraordinary journey that led to his third and most ambitious album, The Golden Hour. From recording his debut, Good Luck Everybody, at Stanley Kubrick's historic home to headlining sold-out shows at London's The Windmill and Third Man Records and supporting The Libertines on tour, Saint Leonard has built a reputation for fearless reinvention. In this fascinating conversation, Leonard shares the wild and deeply personal story behind The Golden Hour—an album shaped by Wild nights in Berlin's underbelly, Spiritual awakenings in India, Isolation in a GDR-era apartment during the pandemic, and Collaborations with Brian Eno and members of Fat White Family. Recorded at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin and Paul Epworth's Church Studios in London, The Golden Hour blends electronic textures, techno pulses, and Weimar cabaret flair—all woven together with Leonard's surreal storytelling and dark wit. Highlights include: Meeting Fat White Family by chance in Berlin and forming a band overnight Collaborating with Brian Eno and how it reshaped his sonic vision Wrestling with identity, paranoia, and rebirth during lockdown Using music to capture the absurdity of existence—with a wink The Golden Hour is not just an album—it's a full-blown experience: cinematic, unhinged, and unforgettable. Doves have yet to have a big 'moment', but in the music business of 2025, those moments no longer even exist. Instead, bands of ‘modest success' must crack on, do their best work, put it out in the world and hope people take some notice. If, as a result, they can reconnect with fans, get out on the road, and make another record, then that is what counts as success. Carrying on regardless. But, Doves have also had success by any hard industry measure. Hit singles (two UK top 10), sold out tours and no less than a trio of number one albums (The Last Broadcast, Some Cities, The Universal Want). “Apparently we are [successful]. Apparently we are the most underrated band ever. I do have gratitude. Even though we've been dealt some pretty bad cards, we're also appreciated, so that levels that one up”. And so Doves soldier on, more resilient than most bands would be in the face of such a constant stream of setbacks. That's partly due to adaptability (which other bands could sell out a tour, sans frontperson?), positive attitude and, importantly, being self-reliant. The fine new album Constellations For The Lonely is a full-scale DIY job, self-produced and released under their own label Doves Music Limited. In a world where ‘independent artists' seem more dependent than ever on industry gatekeepers, Doves can get it done on their own. Well, almost - Constellations is distributed through the new distribution arm EMI North. Better still, the whole project is influenced by the 1982 classic sci-fi noir Blade Runner - as fine a cultural reference point as you need for escaping from the pressures of the outside world, while letting them become part of the bigger story. “When we made the album, it was 4-5 hours away from reality each day, a safe space away from all the shit. That's what got us through it”. It's another creative high for a band that is definitely, somehow, underrated. Yet at the heart of the band is a creative power that they can rely on, even when they operate as three or two. That's something Jez is both confident but humble about. “I tell you who is there for us…the music. I know it sounds cheesy, but it has always been there as a constant, and a guiding light. I know that's a cliche but cliches do have a tendency to be true”. Let's not call Constellations For The Lonely a comeback then, but perhaps this is the start of Doves being free to go where they want, knowing that their fans will follow, that they will get some radio support, and that the recognition and critical acclaim will keep on coming. «Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory» ist unser brandneues Sounds! Album der Woche. Acts 16:35-39 – Wise as Serpents, Gentle as Doves
In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer welcomes back Dr. May Young, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Biblical Studies at Taylor University, to discuss her newly published book, Walking with God Through the Valley: Rediscovering the Purpose of Biblical Lament. Together, they explore the ancient Near Eastern context of lament, its unique role in Scripture, and its relevance for modern Christians. Discover how biblical lament contrasts with the practices of Israel’s neighbors, emphasizing a direct and intimate relationship with God. Learn why lament is essential for cultivating hope and resilience and how neglecting it can subtly erode our faith. Dr. Young also shares practical insights on engaging with lament personally and communally, and how this spiritual practice can deepen our intimacy with God—even in life’s mundane and difficult moments. Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation about rediscovering lament as a vital part of the Christian life. It's a tight episode, content-wise with just Black Doves, Severance and Reservation Dogs officially on the docket, but we are joined this week, once again, by Salony, so you know there's a touch of class in this one! The show kicks off with Andrew peer pressuring Salony into talking about Black Doves on Netflix. It's a solid modern spy show, led by the excellent Kiera Knightley, and lacking the campiness that a lot of modern spy shows do. It's a cool take, with Kiera's character dealing with a little of that work/life balance we all hear about. Go check it out! After that, the show kicks into high gear with the intended content of the week, and the whole reason Salony showed up, Severance. The first episode of season 2 dropped this week and it's off to a great start. If you missed this show when it dropped a couple years back on Apple TV+, so watch it now! It's a very smart and trippy show with a lot to say about humanity. The gang even gets a little deep talking about it, so don't miss our convo, after you watch the show, of course! With the Severance talk over, Salony excuses herself to her night chambers, leaving the two fools to ramble on their own. Kevin starts on track with Reservation Dogs, a show that just dropped it's 3rd and final season on Hulu/FX. It's a show created, directed, staffed, and acted by a Native American crew. Technically Taika Waititi is a co-creator and he is Maori, but the sentiment is there. It's simply the story of 4 teenagers surviving modern life on a reservation. While often hilarious, it is also a superb drama that does a great job of enlightening folks of what life is really like for folks living on "the res." With all of the real content out of the way, Kevin and Andrew spend a little time waxing poetic about what is coming in entertainment this year and some hints about some cool things in the pipeline, potentially, for the podcast. So stay tuned!! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Find out more about CH Ministries here Click here to get a 25% discount on the Dwell Bible App. Today's conversation on Back Porch Theology in our on-going series on the theology of worship is a continuation of last week because we had such an awesome time leaning into all that Scripture reveals Jesus to be, learning from each other's stories – especially the difficult chapters - and laughing that we simply had to have a part two of this conversation! Aren't you grateful that being serious about our faith and being serious about ourselves aren't synonymous? I thoroughly enjoy getting to spend time with people who are fully devoted to Jesus Christ but aren't full of themselves! And saints who feel free enough to laugh at themselves are my absolute favorite kind of people. Which aptly describes the girl gang we're hanging out with again today. Hope Darst, Tasha Layton, Hillary Scott and Rita Springer are too young to be called legends, but they have written and sung a multitude of songs that have shaped the musical landscape of worship. Between them they've won multiple Grammys and CMA's and Doves and KLove Fan Awards, and yet this foursome reeks humility. They are much like the Skinhorse in the story of the Velveteen Rabbit…life has worn them thin enough to recognize that whether they have a number one song or fall completely off the charts, Jesus is the only Hero of humanity's story and commercial success apart from intimacy with our Creator Redeemer is devoid of any real meaning. Mind you, as we continue to emphasize in this series, music is only one facet of how we worship as Christ followers – in fact, the Bible describes worship more as the posture of our hearts than the melody that falls out of our mouths. Which is why the theme of today's conversation is less about melodic tunes than it is about biblical truths. What does worship look like when we aren't singing or listening to Christian music? How do we maintain the posture of worshipping God when we're dealing with deep disappointment, disillusionment, or debilitating depression. Is it possible to have a broken heart and hands raised in praise at the same time? It's going to get raw and real today y'all, so please grab your Bible, a notebook, and some yummy snacks – I always find chocolate to be an excellent companion when taking raw and real adventures – and come give that great big, beautiful heart God placed in your chest some time and space to exhale on the porch with us. We're really, really glad you're here. Save on Dwell here Learn More about Upward Sports here

Review and recommendations of Netflix's 6-part series, 'Black Doves', and the Caroline Lindy's indie film, "Your Monster". Keira Knightly morphs into a super spy with impressive fighting skills and a comedic relief spy best friend in a series that I thought rivaled any action movie in recent years. Then, Melissa Bererra gives an outstanding performance as a young woman dealing with a pile of disappointments and challenges amidst a backdrop of musical theater and fantasy. BONUS: Jax Taylor's silent Cameo and the recent luxury handbag upset by the "Wirkin" All opinions are personal and not representative of any outside company, person, or agenda.
