Emerging in the mid-1980s, womanist theology is the work of African-American women theologians, church historians, ethicists, sociologists of religion, and biblical scholars. The term draws on poet, novelist, and activist Alice Walker's four-part definition of womanism, which calls for “radical subjectivity, traditional communalism, redemptive self-love, and critical engagement.” Womanist thought helps to describe oppression and empower the oppressed in order to create change. Bishop Yvette Flunder has served her call through prophetic action and ministry for justice for more than 30 years. This call to blend proclamation, worship, service, and advocacy on behalf of those most marginalized in church and in society led to the founding of City of Refuge United Church of Christ in 1991, uniting a gospel ministry with a social justice ministry.

“If we realized that we have the power as the people, to decide to take back our own decisions and abilities and our own power; to make good and right decisions for the good of the whole, we will leave room and space. There are many different flowers in the Garden of God. And there are many different ways in which those flowers cross pollinate. There's room and space for all of us to grow and be healthy and we can make room.” - Bishop Yvette FlunderWhen society does not accept you for who you are, it takes radical self love and potent community to experience real freedom. Bishop Yvette Flunder found herself in this position when she realized that traditional religious frameworks weren't designed with her in mind.Bishop Yvette Flunder is my guest this week on Find Your Fierce & Loving. This week, rather than airing a new episode of Yass Jesus, we have decided to use our platform to lift voices from members of the black Christian community. It’s our duty as allies AND Christians to support our brothers and sisters however can, and for us, that means taking this moment to listen. Our friends at the Podcast of the Sacred Inclusion were kind enough to let us air this episode from 2018. It’s a great conversation between Bishop Yvette Flunder and Angelo John Lewis. Please stick around and God bless. The Podcast of the Sacred Inclusion About Bishop Yvette Flunder The Sacred Inclusion Network About this Episode It was a gradual process that led the young Yvette Flunder to question the tenets of the United Church of Christ in which she was born and raised. She couldn't reconcile her emerging beliefs with her church's patriarchal orientation and its emphasis on preparing adherents for the next world rather than addressing the injustices and inadequacies of this one. She also realized she never again could call herself a member of a church that completely rejected same-gender-loving people such as herself. Bishop Flunder here traces the path that led her to become a visionary religious leader with a mission of tending to the spiritual needs of marginalized people around the world, particularly those of African-American descent. She speaks of her vision of radical inclusion, which she believes requires an equally radical social ministry reaching to the furthest margins of society to serve all in need without prejudice or discrimination. "The greatest mistake at the Christian church has ever made was to put a back cover on the book, to somehow suggest that we could make a manual out of the living word of God," she said. Reverend Flunder is the founder and senior pastor of the City of Refugee United Church of Christ in Oakland, California. In 2003, she was appointed Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, a multi-denominational coalition of over 56 churches and faith-based organizations from all over the world. She’s also the author of Where the Edge Gathers: A Theology of Homiletic Radical Inclusion. ____________________________ Yass, Jesus! is hosted by Danny Franzese and Azariah Southworth. The Rev. Dr. Yvette A. Flunder is an unapologetic disciple and proponent of the radically inclusive love of Jesus, who has raised her voice for justice from the church house to the White House and steps of the Supreme Court. During the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 80s, Bishop Flunder worked on the ground providing life-saving care, and today continues her work for intersectional justice around the world. In this episode, she shares about being a justice warrior, how she has sustained her work for many years, and about the heretical nature of Jesus.

Divine Cinema - Progressive Christian Movie Reviews & Analysis
Come Sunday is a film that finally tells the story of the journey into a type of Christianity that Divine Cinema and it’s hosts abide in. However, is it a good film? Does the filmmaking bring to life the struggle in challenging a tenant of Evangelical theology and all the loss that comes with that, or does it just make you wish hell actually exists? Listen to find out what Jeff, Dylan and Adam think. And of course to hear where they stand on its theological merits as measured by the tried and true pieces of silver rating system. Divine Cinema Review of Come Sunday (04:42) Ratings and Redeemed Perspectives (45:54) PLOT SUMMARY After a series of tragic events, Bishop Carlton Pearson begins to question his long standing belief in hell. Eventually he expresses this doubt in the most public way a pastor could, through a sermon. The sermon has a ripple effect, not just through his congregation, but in his family and American Christianity. The film follows Bishop Pearsons journey as he is labeled a heretic by many of his congregants, colleagues and even friends.
